CG didn't belive in integration between reserves and regulars back then. Spent 13 weeks including forming company week. Company CO was BMC Bookout. First Company to be restricted to the base graduation weekend. Seems there were comments made out of the barracks windows to a couple of assistant company CO's about what they could do with their .....! SA's didn't hold much water compared to a couple of E-5's. Ens O'Donnel was a mustang and served as a duty officer. He was responsible for saving the life of one of our members that 'lost it' in our third week. LCDR Jurgens was the Battalion Commander and Ltjg Fernald (SP?) was the assistant. After Boot Camp the Company was split into two groups. FA's went aboard the Dexter for a cruise to Honno and back. SA's went aborad the Gresham and went out to Ocean Station November for about 30 days. I was given the opportunity to be 'Head Man' for the First Class Head. BMC Raybuck was our Company Commander, his assistant was QM1 Earl Edenfield. I remember double timing with an M-1 at high port for an hour every evening for two weeks trying to keep time with a JOOD strolling through his evening rounds. I remember both of the CC's well, also a CS2 who was as wide as he was tall, and twice as tough. He was trying to change his rate to BM, and was our rowing instructor. The man was merciless with a sweep oar in his hands. I don't see anyone yet in this Reunion table mentioning anything about rowing in Boot Camp. I see comments about the grinder and PT, but nothing about rowing early in the morning on the canal, or boat races every week with special liberty to the winners. I also remember a kid from Texas who could break an oar by stroking hard. We were told if you could break an oar by stroking you would get extra privileges. The privilege turned out to be the opportunity to clean up the boat docks in the evening. There were only half a dozen or so USCG recruits in my company, as most were 6 X 6 USCGR. I think I am the only one to stay in for a career. I still have some photographs from Boot Camp, and the black and white company photographs at graduation time. I would be happy to share them with anyone from G-35. Jim Johnson, Bigfork, Montana On 08/22/99 Richard Bigelow (dickjune@qwestinternet.net) said: Foxtrot 36 in 1958. Due to a shortage of Coasties to man the OS cutters, special reserve enlistments had been in effect until the Korean war started. Other branches USMC etc., lent their excess enlistees to the USCG Special Temporary Reserve until an opening occurred. My first cutter assignment was the HUMBOLDT WAVP-372.
