Looks like another decommissioning for all you old West Coast breaker sailors out there...I was up in Seattle today--the Whitestones (which hasn't been Whitestones for years) is closed and up for sale. They'll probably tear it down before long. The Flame was turned into a pool hall 16 or 17 years ago, but it has long since been torn down and turned into storage units---I'm startin' to not like Seattle. By the way you old ones that know me--I'm a new grandpa this week-- gettin' to where I'd just as soon skip some of these Line Crossings.

My dad sailed on Westwind from '70 to '73 , his name is Don Jacobs and was a Mk in the hole. I remember as a kid looking at the wind class ships there in Curtis Bay and thought they were the biggest ships afloat! I know better now, but I am searching for anyone that was staioned with him there or in Matratin, Libya '64 to '65 . Looking for history, photos, etc... He is still working as a port engineer, retired a CWO3 Mk , and still kicking. I went Merchant Marine, did a brief stint in the U.S.C.G. in boot camp in '86, got boooted for a medical? Went back to merchant ships. Anyway, if anyone could help, I would appreciate it. Steve Jacobs

Small world syndrome here. I was on the Northwind in 72' & 73' with Venske as the C.O. and Smith as the X.O. At a young age my dad made me learn how to play the bagpipes (as his dad did and his dad's dad......etc.) So I always had my pipes with me everywhere I went. Now, years later my wife and I run a scottish import shop on Whidbey Island in Washington state (we are both pipers) and we also teach. One of our early students and a truely great friend is a gentleman by the name of....Bob Moss! ret. C.O. of the Staten Island. Who would of thunk! All the way back in the early 70's we shared the same dock on seperate boats together? Even though I went on to become a 'brown shoe', I'll always be an IceBreakerman at heart. Cheers!

On 08/31/01 Mark Williams said:
Well, Palmer is larger than it was in '86. The survival tent hasn't been kept up there for 10 years now... but the rest is correct, elephant seals that SMELL so damn bad, Pisco, glacier. :) It's oh so very different here in the summer and the winter though, simply NOT the same place then :) We even have satellite telephone/Internet access 5 hours a day now; be it at the speed of a 1200 buad modem, but it's there :)

On 08/31/01 Mike Dooley said:
Mark Williams at Palmer. Palmer hasn't changed. I was there in 86', and Palmer is still the same. Only thing is, is that you don't have that kick butt boat call the 'Hero' dumping lumber at your pier from Punta Arenas. Same Sea Slugs, same fuel hoses laying about, same glacier up behind the station with the same yellow survival tent on it. And possibly a bottle of Pisco buried in the snow somewhere. Enjoy Palmer. I did.

If I remember correctly the charts showed the ledge, we *did* screw up, no un intended.

I would like to add my name to the Icebreaker sailors list. I served on the Eastwind for 4 1/2 years. I made 4 south trips, and 1 north trip. I think we all agree that icebreaker sailors are a special group of Coasties. Does anyone know where I could purchase a special license plate that was sold on the Eastwind, it had a penguin on it, and the words 'Anttartica, the worlds last frontier' I am going to check with some icebreakers, if I get a chance. The plate i had got lost in a move at one time. I hope I hear from some of you, if only to tell each other how special we are.

Regretfully, the All Icebreaker Sailor Reunion, scheduled for August 2000 in Vallejo, must be postponed. We will however, be working on plans for a reunion next spring or summer. Please keep an eye on the Glacier Association Web site for details. Also, please contact us if you're interested in helping to plan the next reunion. Thanks. Thanks Fred for the opportunity to contact former shipmates. It's great to see comments from friends from decades ago. I was on the Glacier from 68 to 70 with 2 trips to the Antarctic. I didn't consider it the greatest duty at the time, but I'm sure glad for the experience now. I was an RD3 and one of the ship's divers. That probably has a lot to do with why I live in Florida now.

O my gosh, Steve Lindsey is it really you? I still remember those little socio-politico- religious quips exchanged between you and Tim Cervantez way back during AES-AWS90 and DF90-91. And to top it all off, we had our 'fundamentalist' bible study right in your MST Dry Lab! Three attendees at the beginning of the North trip, up to eighteen regulars at the end of the South trip...CWO Lloyd Ford got 'saved' at our visit to Valdez, AK and is now doing kick-the-alcohol counselling somewhere in the Seattle area. SN 'Francis' Cappola went from the Al Cairns far-left group straight into our far-right association and attended Tim's church for awhile after the trips. MKC Wayne Rowland is some kind of church leader over in the Port Orchard area and his son plays in a Christian rock band. And where am I? Out of churches, through synagogues, and returning to my own ancestral roots and thinking of the Spirits like the true Lakota (Teton Sioux) that I am!

Westwind artifacts To all breaker sailors, Do we have a national museum for polar expeditiona and work? I heard years ago there was a organization in Oregon which had plans for the Glacier and the National Science Foundation's Hero, but that this came to naught. Anyway, if there is any effort to commemorate this nation's Arctic and Antarctic exploration and scientific work, (And commemorate the Northwind, Westwind, Eastwind, Glacier, Polar Sea and Star, Storis, Bear, Corwin, Nautilius, Hero, Ernestina, Bowdoin, Roosevelt, Ellena Bolling, etc) please let me know. As the Westwind was being decommissioned, I rescued several artifacts from the dumpster, including an MST log book for 1982 to 87, a clamshell dipper sediment dredge, two black and white photographs of scientific eqiupment on deck, and a ring buoy. I would like to donate these items to a museum or polar heritage society. If anyone has any ideas, please E-mail me.

I'm trying to gather as much information on the ol' gal and write her history, from the shipyards in San Pedro to her final port. Any stories, letters, envelopes, etc. (copies okay) would be greatly appreciated. Great ship with a great history, it'd be a shame to have her forgotten.

Okay....Where's the listing for the CGC Storis?? She is indeed an Ice Breaker and has earned a historical reputation in numerous books and National Geographic magazine. She is very capeable of handling the chores of most icebreakers and ton for ton, she'd be there with the best of them. I served on her 1957-58 while on the Northwest Passage voyage. I sincerely hope to see here added to this esteemed list of vessels.
