I’m looking to interview Coasties who were involved with several rescues that took place during a surprise storm off the New England Coast in November of 1980. Several Coast Guard boats and stations were involved and the cutter that had the most rescues was the Active. There were several fatalities that day: the F/V Fairwind pitchpoled and only one crewman was rescued at Georges Bank, the F/V Sea Fever lost a crew member when the pilot house windows were smashed, the F/V Determined sank, and many more. If you know anyone that was stationed in New England during that time, including at Cape Cod Air Station please forward this note. I am the author of several books and working on one about this freak storm. (The National Weather service was sued because if failed to tell the F/V that the Georges Bank weather buoy was malfunctioning.) Thank you, Michael Tougias 508-520-8843

Was stationed at PSU 1960 to 1962. Was OIC of 40386. I was BM2 then and thought this was the biggest thrill of my life (being a country boy from Nebraska) being an OIC. Always had a great crew working with me and that is really what made the job so special, as these guys worked as hard as I did in keeping the boat in tip top shape. Cdr. Hoover was CO most of the time I was there. The 40 ers were probably the best boat to operate there was at that time. You could make them do about whatever you wanted. Good luck to all small boat operators and their crews.

A few days ago i went for a ride on the detroit river for the fireworks. I must say when i saw the 41306, and 479...i felt sick to my stomach. They have basterdized the 41's with 'rub rails' that make them look like bumper boats. Has the budget gone so far doen that the cox'n no longer needs to learn boat handeling! All the other small boats are blow up boats. I remember the day when boat handeling was a must..you ding it, you sand it, you paint it. I have now vented. Hello to all my old friends at belle isle. Started running 30 & 40 footers as a SN at Santa Rosa Life Boat Station, Pensacola, FL in 1970. Just kept pestering the BMs to 'Let me drive, let me drive', until they did. 40447 was a good boat. That plastic 30574 was a dog. Loved jumping from it in to sea gull crap to fix bouys lights. For fun, we would run across Pensacola bay in the fog (no radar)just to see if we could follow a compass bearing. Had to quit when we nearly hid a barge. The 40 boat was so old you could see every rib from the out side. I hated the safety patrols on weekends. We had to stay out all day and the beer would be hot before we could get back in. Also had a 19' TICWAN boat to work A/N. It would fly but sure was ugly. Most of the SAR was sail boats, shacked up husbands and a boat fires. BM3 Mike Kennedy - where are you?

Ran a neat plastic 40600 on loan from Y.B.I. while at PSS Concord. My last year I taught reserves at Base Alameda small boat operations, wood and plastic 30's and 40's plus a hulky 56 wood tug type, anyone remember that boat ( boot camp 1969). Anyway lots of fun on SAR cases and surfing the 30 boats in big waves under Golden Gate Bridge. You tend to only remember the good times, which is good. Nov. 1965--April 1967 was at Lifeboat Station Port Isabel, Tx. Cox'n as SN and BM3 on 40502 and 40504 (plastic). Enjoyed the Gulf immensely. Great suntans. Most SAR's involved shrimp boats out of Port Isabel or Brownsville. What a treat they were. April 1967-June 1968 served at Group Eaton's Neck, L.I., NY. as BM3 and BM2. Spent June to Sept. 1967 at Stratford, Conn. SAR sub- unit. Crew of 4. Ran the 30501 (plastic) out of Stratford. Back to The Neck in Sept. 67 and also ran the 30515, 40542, and mostly the 44302. First time breaking ice, with the 44302 (whatever happened to her?). Coldest winter in 30 years there. But would do it all over again. Great times. Great crews.

I was interested in reading some comments. After some time at Alameda I was stationed at Pt. Reyes Lifeboat Station in '58-'59. Now deactivated. Then transfered to W385 Dexter for my remaining time. That ship is now sitting on the bottom of the sea after being used for bombing practice. But would love to hear from anyone from those places. The boat at Pt Reyes was 36389.

I was stationed at Station Islamorada from 1985 to 1988 as a coxswain. We were assigned the 43' Tempest Fast Coastal Interceptor which we referred to as the Fast Cash Incineraters. The Tempest program was a complete failure, but at least someone was trying to get a boat with some speed and endurance. I have been a Marine Enforcement Officer with U.S. Customs in Key Largo since leaving the Coast Guard in '88. We have used vessels ranging from the 35' cigarettes to the 47' Fountain. Obviously these are set up for L/E only but what I don't understand is why the CG can't use something like a 29' Scarab instead of these rediculous Boston Whalers. Having been a Cox'n I can say that speed isn't only needed for L/E but is vital for SAR. The whaler played an large role in my current knee problems. I remember climbing out of the 252505 and was barely able to walk. If the Coast Guard can trust the Cox'n with a 41' to seize drugs, rescue people and protect Presidents, why can't they trust them with boats that have some speed to them? I see the local stations constantly blowing their 150 hp and 175 hp engines and just keep replacing them with the same crap. Can't someone figure out that they need stronger and better engines. Maybe it's not management's fault. I am aware of the budget cuts. It's a very disturbing time under the Clintonomics. Hopefully someone up in D.C. can give the Guard some funding to get better small boats, replace aging cutters and modify the aging C-130's. Let's hope for the best.

Worked on the prototype 42' UTs. The 41's would have done what they were advertised to do had the brass listened to the test boat crews. The boats were tested all up and down the East Coast. The recommendation was to go with the 8V71 Detroit diesels and certain other engineering pieces and parts. The ETs recommended various types of equipment from the test gear etc. To the best of my knowledge most of this test result data was ignored. They cut the boat short by a foot and went with the German built Cat engines which we trashed in our evals.

Best trip was bringing four 41's from the yard to Mayport. Took two weeks, every body else took three days but this was under the command of a W-3 Snipe. Well, some body had to show them BM's how to have a good time. Blew one engine up and dropped it at Base Charleston bet they loved that. Two of the BM's got mad and hitchhiked home. As small boats sailors they had never been gone from home that long and missed their wifes? Took movies of some of it, pretty sight 41's jumping wakes at full bore but they never would do what the books said they would do. Believe me they were fully tested, drunk and sober

Mike, Plenty of us old 40 boat sailors left. We had 40375 (first steel 40) 40495, 40519(?) (plastic with the castrated turbo engine) single screw and useless. We also had the 30415 an old steel 30' UT that leaked so bad we needed assistance.

BM2 stationed at Gloucester 1964-1968. The 44317 was brand new right out of Curtis Bay. We also had the 40518 and the steel 40s were GREAT boats. The plastic 30496 had been assigned to President Kennedy's protection until he was killed and then came to Gloucester with a turbocharged 671 Detroit and would that boat get up and go. Blew the engine at the America's cup in 1965(?) and came back on the buoy deck of the Cactus to boston where the base yanked the engine and replaced it with a large rubber band and the boat was useless after that. We also had a steel 30 either the 30420 or the 30421 for a while after Hampton Beach closed. Gloucester was a great place for a coxswain since we were kept busy towing the fishing fleet winter and summer. That was back when the coast guard assisted boaters and didn't refer them to a private towing and salvage outfit.

..Was staioned at Brant Point, Nantucket from '87 to '90 as a wee Bosun'. We had the 44398 (Bismarck) and the 41362 plus a RHIB and 25' Whaler. Will never forget the hellaciously long tows from the Rose&Crown shoals to inner harbor on the 44 in the dead of winter in near gale conditions. Or the gut sinking feeling of the 44398 rolling 90+ degrees, in icy winter gale waters -in Nantucket Sound! And the look of the fisherman we had just pulled aboard and stowed in the forward cabin... Or the L/E patrol when the then OinC spotted on radar, a 'moving contact' when we were 25 miles offshore. The moving 'contact' would disappear and reappear periodically and drive the BMCS nuts while manuvering to intercept. None of us had the heart to tell him he was intercepting Codfish Park shoals until he saw a footbal field sized sandbar being periodically washed by swells. Great stories from there!

Stationed with Ft. Point Group San Francisco at Pt. Reyes MLB Station 1964-66; deck seaman on the two pig boats, 36491 and 36542 (Dead Man's boat). 542 wasn't used much because of a bad rep. The 36's were slow (8 knots with a tailwind and following seas), but you felt very confident in bad seas. As I recall the boat weighed as much in tonnage is in length, 36 tons. Open sea big water momentum was very smooth. 1966 Stationed at PSU Alameda, ran as boat crew some of the twin plywood 40's before getting shipped out to Concord PSU for explosive loading detail. Would have stayed in the Guard if could have stayed in small boats, no striker positions for BM though. Best coxswain I ever served with was Ozzie Osborne with St. George Reef experience. Where are you these days Ozzie? One old 36 footer is tied up at Rock Harbor, Orleans, Cape Cod. All rehabed and outfitted in pre- stripe standard deck colors and rigging. Open to the public for visits.

Also ran the 40's (which are still the best boats the Coast Guard ever had) we had 1 30 footer (aids boat) and the 52 ( I believe it was the 52312) I was involved in naming it the Invincible and I painted the name on it for the first time. BM1 Gates and Riley and Chief Woods BM2 Larry Hicks and BM1 Hickman were all involved. From there I went to COTP Seattle and ran the 40455 then the Admirals Barge 40592 turbo's that blew oil when opened up. The 592 was a good boat but a single screw. (prefer the twin screw 40's ) still love the 455... Also ran the 40422 which was sunk by Bill Muncey at one of the Hydro races. A Coasty was killed in that. The C.G. brought it to the surface and patched it up and it served many more years.

Does the CG still use these things? I remember many a blistering trip at 6 knots, a 100 mile trip took days with something in tow. Everyone seasick (smokesick) because they would not outrun the smell of their own exhaust (which was expelled right below the Coxwans flat as I remember). We used to draw lots to see who had to go inside to use the old thumbwheel Loran. Do remember swearing in the BMC (he was nuts) while backing through the surf on the beach at Pacific Shores! They sure were an improvement over the old 40s and that is saying something. They also sent us a 36' UT that looked like a Boston Whaler. It had a square bow. Can't remember the names but if any of you guys are still around I would love to hear from you. Would have stayed for 20 if I could have remained aboard that boat, loved the life, loved the duty.

I was stationed at Boothbay Hbr, Maine, from June 63 to June 64. We had a 7 man station. Our boats were 30457 and 36537, both were wood. I was a boat engineer, when underway. would match the 36 footer with any boat in rough seas.Made a lot of trips out to the light stations, and SAR calls. It was a great year for me, since I had been on the Eastwind. Both were good duty. When I look back now it was all good duty.

Started as crewmember, SN, on the smallboats at Yerba Buena Island, San Francisco Bay in early 1970. Crewed on 44347 at (then) decomissioned Fort Point at the Golden Gate bridge (retreived a few jumpers, including one that lived). Shortage of BM's and coxswains at the time opened up the opportunity to be coxswain of 40 boats at YBI as SN. Particularly loved my time with the 40593, single screw. Took Indians off Alcatraz. Put out fire on the Patomic while she was in transit on the bay. Put out fire in a boat underway with no POB in the Oakland estuary. Great memories with the 'ol 40's. Mike (Zoomer) Zenone BMC, ret.
