No single memorial exists at the Punchbowl honoring Coast Guard veterans and we're correcting this oversight. Please visit the website www.cgpacificveteransmemorial.org for more details. I went to Cape May Nov. 1958, sent to 'Forming Company' that taught us how to pick up sea shells off of a field, put them all into a bushel basket to be thrown back out onto that same field to be picked up the following day. We then began a regular company, Hotel-38. Now we were in a real recruit company and were real U.S.Coast Guard recruits. Then Christmas time came and all recruits were allowed to take their leave and go home for Christmas with the exception of just a handful of us, like myself that decided to take leave after boot camp and go home with at least a shadow of hair on my head. During this period of time we were almost like permanent party, no legons and were allowed to go into town to the USO once where we could see a pretty girl or two to look at. Christmas time over and back to recruit training where as after the first month, I came down with the measles and was sent back a company, Foxtrot-38, after a week in the 'sick bay'. One cold ass morning in late January, about three A.M. we were rousted from our racks and ordered out on the b 'back 40' for a long distant haul by way of some damn thing called the 'Chicken Walk'. At least there was a very pretty girl that worked in our PX on the base and the rumor was floating around that if you asked her for all pennies in change for a five dollar bill, she would go on a date with you. The sounds of all those pennies jingling around in the uniform pockets of a few recruits became quite anoying, especially prior to morning chow, when doing push ups, sit ups, and jumping jacks, the ground was always covered with pennies. After four or five trips to the Px, those damn pennies became quite heavy, never did get a damn date. My memories of boot camp. From there, two years on the CGC Coos Bay, year and a half at C.O.T.P. Boston, 6 months Hyanis Port, President Kennedy detail. All in all, Coast guard was not bad duty, of course we don't remember the tough times as well as the fine times

Looking for anyone who served on the USS Caribou during WWII with my grandfather, Clarence G. Trosvig. Since he was older than many of his shipmates, he was nicknamed 'pops'. He was a quiet and gentle man with a heavy Norwegian accent. Younger sailers trusted him to hold their money before they played poker so that they wouldn't gamble away all of their money. He died in 1993. I'd really love to hear from anyone who knew him or at least served on the same ship at the same time as he did.

The only picture I have of my Dad is his Wedding Picture taken on 11-27-1954. The only way my mom could leave Germany was if she was Married. He was in the Navy from 7-22-1950 to 1-28-1955. He was on the USS Macon 132-CA. I don't know how many of his Navy Buddies are still around. I just wanted to tell them that my Dad Passed Away April 4,2001 from Pancreatic Cancer. All of his surviving children and one of his Grandchildren were at his side. We all held his hand as he Passed Away. I will say this, I don't ever want to go through that again, it was an extremely hard thing to do. In 2 days it will be 1 year that he has been gone and I miss him VERY MUCH!

I had the pleasure of serving on the Taney from February 5th, 1952 to April 30, 1954. I went aboard directly out of bootcamp, Company Mike 3, Alameda, California to the Taney, no leave, no liberty, 'she sails today!' Had the honor of striking under BM1 Lew Bard or 'Black Bard' as we affectionately called him. Sorry to learn he passed away, he was 'one of a kind', a true sailor. He was the MAA when he was on the Taney and I'm sure that wherever he is now he is the MAA and hitting someone's rack with a dogging iron at reveille. I still hear that ring to this day! My wife and I will be at the reunion and am looking forward to seeing everyone. Hope LT Britt is there so I can confess to him that it was me that brought the case of beer aboard in Honolulu and dropped it on the quarterdeck when he had the OOD. I hid it in the damage control locker aft, but a couple of bottles broke and he followed the trail. I worked in the laundry at the time so I scooted below and quickly changed my beer soaked blouse and reappeared on deck ready to go ashore. He asked to smell my breath and then said 'go ashore sober and come back sober', I just have to tell him it was me to set things right. See you all at the reunion.

Some of you may remember(1955-1958) the officer that conducted the interviews to determine what school you would go to after boot camp. Lt or Ltcdr Eugene Delaney was the person who interviewed me in 1956 and helped me change my mind from engineman school to firecontrol technician school. As I look back that decision really changed my life. He died earlier this month at age 72 in Reston, Virginia. He was a career officer and retired as a Capt in 1980. His last assignment was as Cuief of the Office of Boating Safety ai Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC. I wonder how many other lives he changed during that critical 'choice of schools' event. I served 1956-1960 and was an FT1-P1 at discharge.

I spent two years on the Chautauqua from Oct 1955 till Oct 1957. I'd like to hear from anyone that served during that time. I remember a few of the people but need help with most of the others. I'm trying to put names to pictures that I have.
