Hello... I have spent the last few years living in the Solomons aboard a private marine research vessel, much of it over iron bottom sound. I am currently finishing writing a book about an experience I had there (I survived being lost at sea) -- as part of my book I want to include information on WWII, specifically about Guadalcanal and Henderson field. My ultimate goal would be to include as specific information about my grandfather's ship, the USS Hunter Liggett and it's history there. His name was William Sink, Chief Boatsman mate, by any miracle, maybe someone rememvers him? Or... if anyone has any recommendations as to where I can find information on the ship and her history in the Solomons, that would be fantastic and much appreciated.

This is a wonderful site. My dad was in the Navy and was a cook on a Merchant Marine ship...the ship was sunk and my dad as well as only one other sailor lived but taken as prisoners. Dad didn't like to talk about what happened but I did find out he was givin some type of experimental treatment on his arm that left a scar in exchange for his freedom. Is there any imformation that I can be given about my dad and the other sailor ? Daddy died three years ago from the exposer of the asbestos, sorry my spelling isn't the greatest. He was only 16 yrs. old when he signed up and I think he served 1941-1943. He came out of the sevice and went to study for the Priesthood in Upstate N.Y. His parents owned a resturant and motel called the Yorkshire in Claverack N.Y. area. Dad also went to Georgetown University in Washington DC where he graduated with honors as a law student. Our family moved to Manassas Va. where he started his law practice. His last address was in Callao Va. there he was the Commonwealths Atty. for two terms, he passed away on Nov. 23, 2003, I didn't get to the hospital in time...our stepmother had him creamated so he wasn't even given the proper burrial for a Catholic Sailor. Dad did own a sailboat durring the last ten years of his life and I joined him on it a few times...he loved the water and sailing. The memorial that was given when he passed didn't recognise any of his time served as a sailor in the war...what he went through...my daughter Cecelia, is a 2nd.Lt. in the J.R.O.T.C. in high school, she is persuing a career in the military and I would love to be able to share with her the wonderful story of her grandpa. His name is William Joseph LoPorto the nicnames he may have had were Sonny or Billy. Thankyou so much for allowing me to write this, and give a little hope for some answers. Thank you and God Bless You and all you do. Sincerely, Terese

My name is Gail Westcott. I am searching for anyone who has information of my father Harry Goldsborough. He was in the Navy in WWII. He may have been using his brothers name of James. He was from lower Michigan and went in at the age of 17, born 8-3-22, telling us his mother signed for him. We have no discharge papers for him but I do have James' discharge card. The government says that my father was only in the Navy for a few months. I have some pictures and the story from my dad about his ship being blownup. He said that he worked in the engineroom and also kept a ship mascot, a small monkey. I hope someone can shed some light on this. My father passed some years ago and the government will not put his purple hearts on his marker because they have no record of him. Please help me find something about Harry or James Goldsborough. If you have different avenues for me to take to find things I would appreciate the help. Thank you.

Hello, I'm an historian and the son of a WWII Pacific LST officer. I'm currently researching the typhoon that Third Fleet encountered off the Philippines on 18 December 1944 (which subsequently became known as typhoon COBRA.) I'd be interested in corresponding with or interviewing anyone who would care to share memories of steaming through that particular storm. While my main focus is on COBRA, I’d also be interested in hearing experiences of typhoon VIPER (June 1945) or any details of operations around the Philippines in late ’44 or early ’45 (from Leyte Gulf onward). If anyone reading this happens to know of someone who remembers these events who might be interested in talking to me about these things, please do let him know. I can be reached at ruefulscribe@bellsouth.net . My thanks to all veterans of whatever era for your service to our country.

In a letter dated July 14, 1945 to my father, Lt. Saegmuller wrote: 'In February Mr. Daniels was sent to explosive school in New London, Conn. And I was made permanent C.O. here. From school Mr. Daniels was sent to the West Coast for duty and I was there until the end of June when he was brought back to Washington. The other day I heard that he was getting out on the 21st of July. The Navy took over the front part of the station last spring and all we have is the back wing and half of the galley wing now but that is plenty as we only have about 35 men here now. Most of the old gang is gone, Baily and Schiro from the Meeting St. office as well as Johnson and Barnes are still here. Some of the other old timers are Petrie – Parnell – Zahler – Jack Saurlock – Winston – Schaeffer – Winters – Haraka – Dowling – Starke – Hauseal – Ries – Corbett – Wynens – Ford – “PJ” Morrison.' I'm looking for anyone who served on the USS Caribou with my grandfather, Clarence G. Trosvig. He was nicknamed 'pops' by his shipmates because he was older than most of them. He was a quiet and gentle man who spoke with a heavy Norwegian accent. Younger sailers trusted him to hold their money for them before the played poker so that they wouldn't 'gamble away' all of their money. He died in 1993, and I would love to learn a little about his experiences because he didn't talk about them much.

I am the grandson of a sailor from a Coast Guard ship, the USS Samuel Chase, APA-26. My Grandfathers name is Thomas Coleman Smith, he served in the Pacific theater and often tells the story that on the way to the P.I. the ship had to be left behind from the convoy, because the engine gave out. That he and a couple others got inside the 'stack' and repaired that beast to get it going again. He is up in years now and I need help. Any information on the medals and awards he should have I need to know. I myself served in the U.S. Navy, HM3, and I know how hard it is just to get my own material. Also, if there any shipmates, that remembers my grandfather, he said he served during the run to the P.I. and was aboard when Japan surrendered. He vivdly talks about the Japanese cars running off of coal, because there was no oil or gas to be found. Any information on the route, vague or not, or internet links that I can use would be most helpful. Thank you for any information.

I'm hoping one of you Vets can help me. My mom has two photos of her father and no other info other than that he was in the Coast Guard circa 1941-42. He's wearing his uniform in the photos which the C.G. historian tells me is that of a Carpenter's Mate. We know he was in the San Francisco area sometime between mid-December 1941 and mid-January 1942 as that's when my grandmother would have gotten pregnant. The photo was taken when my mom was about a year old, so that puts him in the S.F. area again, sometime around 9/43. I'm trying to find out if there is organization, government or non, that can tell me what Coast Guard ports may have been used in the S.F./Alameda area at that time, what ships would have been in port during the timeframes I mentioned, and where I can find crew photos so that we might be able to play 'Match the Faces'. Grandmother is deceased, so no new info will be forthcoming from her. She left these photos in an envelope with my mom's name on it. I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone might be able to offer. We're not interested in disrupting lives, just want to put a name with the face. Thank you in advance for both your assistance and for your service to our country - both are greatly appreciated. I'll be posting the two photos in the Fred's Place Photo Album in the personnel section, titled 'Mystery Man 1' and 'Mystery Man 2'. If you think you can identify the man, please let me know.
