With Attack Squadron 164, made 3 West Pac Cruises to Viet Nam, sure didn't take long to grow up! First cruise on the USS Oriskany, which had a big fire on Oct 26,1966, killing 44 shipmates. After making repairs, made another cruise on the Big O, then made my last cruise on the USS Hancock. I was in Rosy Roads first part of 75. then cross rated over to AMH. I was in VA-72 from 75-78. ended up in VT-7 in Meridian MS. Married an AMS3 Donna Berberich. The detailer wanted to send me back to a bird farm, I chickened out and ran to the CG in 81. Ended up at CGAS Brooklyn from 81-86, Houston Air Station 86-89, back to Brooklyn until 93. Went right into the Coast Guard and was sent to the USCGC Duane, than Group Portland, ME. Four years later I was I did a tour on USCGC Tamaroa, (former USS Zuni (ATF-95), sister ship to the USS Abnaki). After three years on Tamaroa I made Chief and was sent to MSO Corpus Christi and was there 5 years. Was transfererd to the First District Armory which had been moved to Cape Cod, MA. I retired out of the armory up on the Cape. Had some great times in the Navy, saw a lot of the world. My wife and I visited the old NTC San Deigo back in Dec 97 and found out that it's all been changed. Not even a boot camp any longer. My old barraks building, across from the galley, has been torn down. Some of the old wooden barraks buildings still stand though. Worm Island, where they use to send the new boots, is some kind of correctional facility. There is a chain link fence that runs right through the center of the grinder in front of the galley. I was kinda disappointed when I saw it. The Navy sold it to the city. Progress I guess. The old main gate, where my father went through back in 1945, still stands though. The old graduation grinder with the gunmounts in front of it is also still there. Yeah, had some great times in the Coast Guard too, but still have those good ol' Navy memories. Thanks for listening. Schlaffman was the CC. San Diego is nice in the fall. Started out in Camp Nimitz then moved mainside and became acquainted with USS Recruit. After Boot, I went to Fleet Sonar School, Key West for 6 months, then to USS Sierra (AD-18) and on to USS Damato (DDE-871), USS Biddle (DDG-5)later renamed Ricketts, and back to Key West as in Instructor. Part of the time I instructed with SOC Day and SO1's Kollar, Crabb and Hill, CG types. I contemplated jumping to the CG then. From there I went on to USS Fletcher (DD-445) and USS Radford (DD-446, both at Pearl Harbor. After 11 2/3 years I got out as STC. 2 years later I was enlisted in the CG as ST1 by MKC Terrell in Spokane and sent to FleTraGru, Pearl Harbor. I worked there with STC Chris Pylate, and LTs Chris Bonner and Winston Churchill. From there I went to SQS-38 school and on to USCGC Rush in Sep '74 as STC and to USCGC Midgett in June 76 as the Bosun.I finished up as Asst. Branch Chief, RTSB, TraCen Alameda, and retired with 11 1/3 yrs as W-3 from Support Center, Alameda Sep '82. After a year in seminary, I moved to Wisconsin and joined the Wisconsin State Patrol. After 19 wks in the State Patrol Academy(boot camp has nothing on that experience, especially at age 44)I graduated as a Trooper and switched to Motor Carrier Inspector (Diesel Bear). I guess I can't get away from Dept.s of Transportation. This past July I retired from the State Patrol with 15 years as an Inspector and Compliance Review Officer. I figure this should be my last retirement, barrng any unforseen opportunities. I wouldn't trade a minute of any of it.
