From aprox. 6/56 to 7/57 James Yeary USN SO3, spent a year at the Naval base on San Salvador, BWI. Although I wasn't a Coasty, they would come up to our base for movies, chow, cause trouble, etc. Couldn't believe the setup they had there. Like a vacation spot with a little work thrown in. Our place wasn't much better except for accomidations. Those guys had a ball, and heard lots of crazy stories about things they did and survived, don't know how in some cases, but I always heard Coasty's were tough, and these guys sure as hell were! Best to all.

On 03/24/06 Dave Schlitz (southjerseydave@comcast.net) said: Was in Echo 41 Sep/Dec 1959. After almost winning the weekly company competition - lost by less than a point - and not getting some Wildwood liberty, we became Easy-going Echo and never did win the competition, although our pulling boat crew did win a match race and got us a few extra hours later on. I remember the Chief's big poker night at the barracks during our galley week, our getting caught singing Jingle Bells during morning colors while marching out to the rifle range, and the number we did on the mess hall at breakfast to get back at India 41 (the galley week company) for waking us - a senior commpany - up at 03:00 over some perceived slight. I would like to hear from any of you old Easy-going Echo 41 guys. just drop me an e-mail if you get a chance.

I was in Company Roger 8 from Feb. to Aug. 1957. Our CPO was Don Landis and the BM1 was a guy named Ettinger, I think. We were on the Unimak in July and I found a photo of the Unimak on the internet taken in July 1957 off Wildwood NJ. We used to go to Philadelphia for liberty. We were selected to go to Washington DC in May of 1957 to march in the Armed Forces Day parade in Washington DC. We were to fly to DC on a C47 with web seats but it had engine problems so we flew on an Admirals C47 with plush seats. We learned later that the frist C47 took off with no passengers to a maintenance base and crashed enroute killing the pilot and co pilot. We were at Quantico and had some liberty in Washington. Chief Landis was tough but fair. When we graduated he brought his young family to the feastivities. I seem to remember that the boot camp was tougher than I thought it would be, but we had some good times too. Anybody from that era? I went back to Cape MAy in the mid 80's, my sister married a CG officer and he was stationed at Cape May and we toured the facility. It sure has changed. The CO's office had photos fromt the fifties and I could spot my old barracks, 170.

On 04/21/05 J.T. Chapin said:
Don: Could be the same guy who was DI of Echo 32 when I was there July-Oct. '57 (Roger 15). He was a Hispanic from San Antonio named Fernandez, I think. He was short, wiry and vocal, and we called him The Screaming Eagle. He hated reserves, and whenever he was barracks MA for the night, we knew we would get rolled out about 2:00 am in dungarees, seabags and rifles and do an hour of close-order drill on the 'Grinder,' the old ex-Navy runway. Our DI was a short, redfaced Boatswain's Mate Chief named Clyde V. Wilkins. Every morning he would come flying through the gate in his brown Cadillac in just enough time to park at the Chief's Quarters and get to formation in time for Colors. He was a helluva guy, and we were the first reserve company to win one of the weekly boat races (I rowed #4 starboard) and by the time we passed the stern of the Unimak, I was almost too shot to 'Toss Oars.' Cape May CO at the time was a captain named Steinmetz, and he had three gorgeous daughters who always seemed to be at the beach, in the Permanent Party section (off limits to recruits) whenenver we had Swim Call. We also were the first reserve company to win weekly 'Honor Company' and drew a 36 right after Captain's Inspection on Saturday Morning. I went to NY City and saw a friend from high school, who was in the Radio City Rockettes. Vernita took us backstage, and we stared out through the huge movie screen and looked at people watching the movie. They couldn't see us. I've been a writer most of my life, and I have a bunch of stuff (most unpublished) about my Coast Guard days both during and long after boot camp. One's a piece about Cape May called 'We Knew It Was Gonna Be A Weird Trip When They Told Us The Guy On The Roof Was Captain Marvel.' Another's Called 'Crash Dive By A Goosed Moose,' about an incident under the Lake Ponchetrain bridge, when I threw the CO of our reserve unit (from Houston) over the bow while practice-docking a 40-boat. My home address is 17,311 Double Horn, Helotes, TX 78023-3406, and phone # is 210/695-8258. P.S.: Do You remmber the sailing schooner at Cape May , the 'Curlew?' Right now I'm working on an update on her to send to 'Sea Classics' Magazine, in hopes they'll use it. She's a charter boat, with a web page that has specs, updated rebuilds, etc.,, but no address at all to get in touch with Curlew Charters, Inc. I wrote the first draft 30 years ago, right after I saw her at Marina del Rey, all sleek and shiny in civilian get-up, and have submitted to several places with no success. Sorry for having so much wind in my sails!! J.T. Chapin 20 April '05

Mike 19 retaliated by waiting for them to open their windows one morning for their daily assault and promptly returned fire into their second story windows from the balcony on our barracks. Worked out well as they were due for barracks inspection shortly. That senior company thing didn't carry much weight with Mike 19... After graduation, I went to Ellis Island.
