Hey Michael Shapiro, you are the closest to my time at Cape May. You must have gone into a Co. the week or 2 before we did. I was in Victor 6, Jan. 69 to March 69, our mother company was Uniform 6. They did the kitchen and we did day work the last week.

Steve, good to hear from you. life has been great. took early retirement from IBM Corp two years ago for bad back. Wish more guys would look at these pages. the coast guard was almost like a 'forming company for life'. Had some great times while I was in and, of course, some bad ones. Had lots of close calls while flying. the crash of the h52 out of Chicago was the deciding factor for me. I would have been on it if Johnson wouldn't have volunteered to take the flight for me. Hope you have been well and happy all these years.

Rich, I read down further and it looks like the Lonely Bull was popular in boot camp Ken Forest may have been who you remembered as his dates are closer to when you were at boot camp than mine but I too did play it. I should have done the math. I must have been the next camp buglar after Ken. When I was on the Burton Island EN1 Tom Longfellow my boss used to make me play Hey Jude sometimes. Funny what we remember.

On 02/16/08 Steve Schlansky said:
In reply to Rich McGowens post, Even though we were not in the same company in Boot Camp I was Bravo 65. Aug 1968 at Alameda. I used to play the Lonely Bull by Herb Alpert &Tijuana Brass but don’t remember doing it for color. However I remember playing it because I was ordered to one time I think during assembly. I also remember getting clicks when I return to barracks after playing taps. I was offered permanent detail at Alameda in the CG Band but turned it down. Wish I hadn’t though. Gave the horn up many, many years ago. Hope life has been good to you. Steve

Retired from L/E in 2001 and have been stationed here in Tampa since. The new kids can't believe what it was like in the 'OLD' days. Cape May isn't like it was when we went through. I regret not stopping in for more than just to say 'hi'...I'm sure there were a lot of stories to be told. I read or heard somewhere that he passed away not too long after that in the 70's I think. I think he was the nicest CC there...by nice, fair and reasonable but expected the best and if you deserved it, you got your butt kicked.

I just received an email from one of Chief Clem Meredith's sons. He had read some comments on Fred's place and wanted to let everyone know how much he enjoyed reading what was being said about his son. Probably only those that went through boot camp at Alameda in the 60's can appreciate the 'fear and respect' one felt as soon as Chief Meredith came on deck. Here's his son's email 'Hello all: I ran across your comments regarding my dad on the Reunion Hall website. I am Chief Meredith’s oldest son. I was named after him and I remember visiting Government Island in Alameda. I was very excited to read your comments about my dad. It lets me know that all of the things that I remember hearing about him were true. His greatness continued after he left the Coast Guard. He entered the military with an 8th grade education. However, when he left the service, he went back to school and eventually earned a Master’s Degree from UC Berkeley. Unfortunately he died at the age of 51. We miss him a lot, but he gave us a legacy of greatness. Thank you so much for the wonderful comments and memories! Clem Meredith, Jr.

Following John West idea; I wrote to the Commandant, suggesting a Company Commanders award, named for Chief Meredith. I pointed out that even the other C/Cs looked up to 'Big Clem'. Also mentioned that a glance at this 'reunion table' would show the esteem in which Chief Meredith was held. Got a reply back, from the four stripper at Cape May. He told me, that all of us C/Cs were just wonderful people; and that his Senior C/C had once been 'petty officer of the year'. My conclusion was, that there is no one currently involved in Coast Guard recruit training, that has a clue as to how it should be done. The present leadership can not fathom the impact that a man like Clem Meredith made. He taught me a lot; and I was a BM1 when I met him.

Had to go to Cherry Point MCAS to see the range 18 months later. I remember PaPa was a 100 man company and my friend Bill McCoy was in Quabec which was a 50 man company and they were in one of the old buildings. After BOOT went to Southport, NC and the Cape Upright USCGC 95-303 for a couple of years, then to Loran Sta San Sal and finally to NMG New Orleans. If anyone out there remembers e-mail me...

Chief Meridith is one man I know I will never forget! I was in Bravo 49 - in 1965 at Alameda and one day had a dental appointment. I had to run from our classroom to the dentist - running full bore, came around the corner of a barracks and almost ran smack dab into Mr Meridith! I pulled up short about a foot and a half from him and knew my life had ended right there! 'Where you goin boy!?' 'Sir, to the dentist sir!!!' 'Then get the hell out of my site!!' 'Sir! Yes Sir'!! I will NEVER forget that! LOL Aw, the good ol' days!

Then on to the Ceremonial Honor Guard, FT-A School in Great Lakes and finally ended up on the CGC Glacier (WAGB-4). Sailed with many good men and got out in 1969. Attended the Icebreaker Muster this summer and renewed friendships with a few shipmates from those days. I'd sure like to know if anyone has any pictures from the Alameda days.

Out of all the folks that I remember from those boot camp days - Mr. Meridith stands out most clear. I'll never forget him - even in my advanced years. Back in 1960, Mr. Meridith was a 1st Class Petty Officer (BM, I think). He sure was impressive. I bet lots of folks who Mr. Meridith didn't approve of sure thought he was a 1st Class somethin else, that's for sure. He sure did alot of good work for the Coast Guard. Maybe a DI award should be named after him or somethin.

Jon, I was on the Taney from 1-64 to 9-66 and don't remember anyone like the 2 you mention. Our only big doofus was a guy named Heglin that was locked up, after a Captians Mast at sea, in the 'brig' ( the linen locker) for sleeping on watch on Ocean Station November. Had to have a petty officer escort him everywhere when he wasn't locked up. Like he was going to go anywhere a thousand miles at sea!!! Heglin also was caught in San Diego climbing across the mooring lines trying to sneak ashore when he was restricted to the ship. Dumb twit fell into the brink when the quartermaster yelled at him !! The only other screw up I remember was an FA with 18 years in that was transferred on just before underway training in San Diego. The last we saw of him was on liberty in Tiajuana fighting 3 Tiajuana cops. We left for Alameda 2 weeks later and was told the State Department was still trying to get him returned to the US.

I was F-51 at Alameda, May-june 1966. I think it was week 7 we had to work in the galley, there were 2 guys there that were in the process of being cashiered. I never knew their real names .. the bald one was called Popeye, and the one with hair went by Scumbag. They had done an armed robbery and were being thrown out of the CG. They were famous for their drunken shit-eating contest in the head abord the Taney .. I swear this is not made up! Anyway, years later I'm a tribal official at Fort Hall, I move into a house in Pocatello. The woman across the street is living with this biker who's got a game leg and a leaky hawg. We were talkin, he says, 'You were in the Coast Guard at Alameda? My dad was in the Coast Guard, same place, he got thrown out.' I said I probably knew his dad and asked him if his dad was bald or had hair. 'He was bald as an egg.' I told him, well at least you aren't Scumbag's kid. It's a small world, baby!

Alameda, June '62 I may have you all beat! Did the recruit Hat Trick - was in Mike 37, Alpha 38, Bravo 38, Charlie 38, X Co, Y Co, & Z Co. -- 5, that's right, FIVE months in boot camp!! Mr. Meridith (Capt. Midnight to some of us if he was nowhere around) is the prominent figure in the first 4 chapters of my book. Mr. M is the one who changed the name I grew up with to Bruce 344-(etc). After 6 years I dropped the numbers. My last 2 years in the Guard were some of the best of my life, I was sent on vacation to So. Italy. Discharged over there, spent 4 1/2 years in the wilds of Europe. Oh, the stories there are to tell, (thus the book [yet in progress]), but the Guard was very nice to me in those years, considering that I was a young screwup. Does anyone remember the bell rope on the bell in the recruit area starting in the fall of '62? Last time I saw it it was painted an ugly yellow. Why would Mr. M give a screwup who couldn't pass off knot tying class the job of making that bell rope? It was one of the last things I did before he booted me over to X Co. So that's why they call it boot camp?... With Mr. M it wasn't just recruit training, if you weren't helping win honor Co. you were jetsam, and I was in the last batch of 3 to get tossed from Mike-37. Recruit Retraining & Disciplinary Action (X Co.) with the sawed off runt Hunter in charge though anal, was so much better than life with Merideth. Too bad recruits usually didn't get to know what a good guy that BIG BLACK MEAN S.O.B. really was. You were lucky/fortunate if he was your friend. If there's a 'Show Deck' in heaven I would bet he's in charge of it.

Re: Mr. Meredith who was a Company Commander at Alameda Training Center in the very early 60's. It sure is amazing how everyone who ever ran into that man or ever saw him in action can never forget him. He was good for the Coast Guard and the young men who he trained (although nobody thought so at the time). He lives on, that's for sure.

Regarding CC Meredith, BM1 that was a CC at Alameda. A James Meredith, BM2 served aboard the CGC Winona in 1954-547 He is listed on our ship's roster as passing away in southern California on 14 Febuary 1989. We think this is the same person that was one of the most outstanding CC's at Alameda Trng Center. My Company Charlie 35 shared a Head with one of his Companys in 1961. his people claimed their side of the Head leaked water onto the the Head below and offered to share our side and assist us with cleanup on our side. We fell for it! thus their side was ALWAYS ready for inspection and they only had to do half the work on our side! We tried the same ploy on the next Company to occupy that space, but CC Meredith was their CC and our trick was refused!

Cape May, MIKE 47, 9/61-12/61: It's sad to note that there is not a soul yet registered in this hall from Mighty Mike 47 (mostly a 6 X 8 company). Mike 47 won Honor Company every week from 3rd week onward (technically not eligible in 3rd week, but Little Clark got us the official win), That was eight weeks in a row, except for Galley, Range, and Service weeks. There was seldom any money in the company---we were almost always broke from weekly trips to New York. I recall that the best weekends were when I was broke and working for free as a short order cook at the USO club. Plenty of young ladies, plenty of food. Little Clark got me the job---Steven C. Clark, BM1, a guy worth remembering, with a 'golden' left sleeve! I recall my last night at Cape May: it was bitterly cold and windy and Mike Kenniff and I walked a punishment tour with sea bags and all, courtesy of Little Clark---and me! Kenniff never forgave me for this 'disgrace'---he even dated my sister when he got out in '65! But I have always thought it was a hoot: two squared-away guys from a top company, walking a punishment tour their last night in boot camp. Can anyone beat that? Charles Hill, ET1, '65

Went to Cape May Jan.'69 was in Bm1 Thaxtons company, Tango-6. Finished in March of '69 went to RM School at Gvoernors Island. I actually had a great time in Boot Camp I know that it must soundcrazy. I still remember the night we got on the bus at the 'Jester' on our true initiation into man-hood. That was a long time ago but I can still remember it like yesterday!!!!! Like having to dolaps(50) around the quarterdeck with my seabag at Hi-port!!! Right before graduation day for smoking in the smoking area without permission. I was the right-guide for our company!!!
