Golf-87 at Alameda from September to November 1972. Remember getting off the bus and being yelled at, called names I wasn't even sure what they meant, and doing my first '25 cranks' because I had red hair. Been in the Coast Guard only a few hours and I was ready to swim that channel. But I did become RBC, grew up a lot in nine weeks, and looking back it was something this hippie needed. Man, has it really been 35 years?

Sat in a squad bay for 4 days before we became XRAY 12 only took one day to know I wanted to be the Guidon. No Watches and no M 1 to hold at arms length or lug around even had right guide to carry my books to classes. CC Qm1 Fair granted my wish and the rest is history. Will never forget ' My name is Chief Quartermaster Hermann at the end of this class you will have learned everything you will need to know about' before every class he instructed, funny thing was he was right. Joined to stay out of Nam and ended up there in 71, USCGC Castlerock then to the USCGC Point Turner, Station Point Judith RI, Station Block Island RI, Sta Charlevoix MI , USCGC Mesquite. Made BMC in 10. It was a time I will always remember and cherish. Must have been something good about the 70's recruits as I see most of the people here continued on after the first 4 years. I am proud to be one of you and would enjoy hearing from any that was at beutifull Cape May during the summer of 1970

Alpha 101, April-May 1975. Great memories, would never stoop so low as to exaggerate them, heh. Our CC was a runty former Marine named Hickerson. The runty part was good luck, as he had a fondness for walking across our stomaches begging 'Please Mr. Cockroach, don't die!' BM1 Hickerson, if you are still alive, I remember one piece of advice from you that changed my life. I remember you with respect. You Cape May dandies, well, we formed with 75, graduated with 15 + 10 fallbacks. Bill Ethier, I remember you well; we met years later at Yorktown and I asked you to roast an OCS candidate who d*mned well deserved it. We were both DC1 by then. You others, I still have the graduation picture; would be glad to send copies if you need one. Life is good, shipmates and we're still here.

Alameda, Company Alpha 122 - 10/78-12/78. GM1 Meade - We were informally known as 'seabag company', because we spent more time carrying around our gear than not. Who was that guy who left his locker unlocked? I think he still needs a blanket party 30 years later! My favorite memory involved 4 of us guys. Since we had to tote our seabags everywhere, it was easier to form small groups, and march back from chow, instead of running. One day, in about our 6th or 7th week, we were starting to feel a bit cocky, as we were only a couple weeks from graduation. With 4 of us in formation, I initiated a 'goose-stepping' march back to the barracks. BIG mistake! We got stopped by Chief 'Dogface' Jones,...who made us highport the compound a few laps. That almost killed me! To you other 3 guys, I don't remember who you were, I apologize for the needless 'exercise'. To the guys whose names I remember, Berman, Kerr, De los Santos, Hartzler, Luna, Sorgani, Fricks, and all the rest, god bless you guys!

It is hard to believe it was 32 years ago today that X-24 (NJ Company) met BMC Craddock, on a Saturday morning, endure the ceremony, my mother still has the video of us 'marching' out that morning, and us marching out in December, then took the CGC Cape Star to the CGC Alert to RTC Cape May and there we met Chief Craddok again; he changed, a lot. It is harder to believe I have been retired from the USCG for 10 years. It was an incredible 22 year trip from a SR at RTC Cape May to a LT at NESU Seattle Icebreaker Support, via so many memories I bore my congregation on a regular basis, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I would do it all over again. Well, not everything; some things I would do twice.

Was in Cape May TRACEN in February 1971 with graduation in May. For the life of me, I can't remember that far back anymore. Tango 14 sticks in my head. I came down with pneumonia and was in sick bay for 4 weeks and then Yankee something pops up. Was in Honor Guard entire time and never made Red Belts. Only remember Rich Tisdale and Lonnie the tap dancer. Never have heard or seen anyone from boot camp since we graduated. My nickname in BC was 'Miami'. Could that have been because I came from there? In my 8 years in the Guard, I never was stationed anywhere near there. Went airdale at AR&SC for AD A school but, got kicked out because I wouldn't go up in a bird after installing a rebuilt engine. I was only 17 and a wise guy. I remember we were the last company to use the drafty old pool in the winter and were the first company to use the new pool. Also, taking driver training on the pad and wrecking a couple of the motor pool cars. We all still passed....We also had a chief from one of the other companies go nuts at CPO club and punch out all the windows at the Honor Guard. He just came back from the Nam and didn't like the red stars on the windows. Thought the NVA were in Cape May. Everyone remember Max the Axe in the barber shop?

I reported to Alameda in September, 1970. Had the privelege of joining with my best friend, as luck would have it his brother was RM2 at Humbolt Bay. He picked us up at the airport and the first place he took us was to the EM club. We stayed until 2345 since we had to report by 2400. I would not recommend reporting to bootcamp with a buzz. I was in Charlie 77, we had a good company and survived the 9 week ordeal. BM1 Cooper was our CC. Now after 36 years my daughter is planning on joining in August. I have tried to get her ready since I didn't know anything about the Coast Guard when I joined. Her recruiter has been very upfront with her in what to expect. I guess the main thing I have tried to impress on her that it could be a great career. How many of us have looked back and thought we would be retired had we stayed for the 20. Oh well...things have worked out and life goes on. I am looking forward to going to her graduation. She has been guaranteed the 17th. May as well enjoy it since she may never get back there. I know I have not been back there since serving on the STORIS.

In reply to the 11/18/04 posting. Jeff Leighty! This is Sam Mason here. Hotel '93 - Nov '73 to Jan '74. What a trip to see your name here. You had the bunk above mine and the last time I saw you was in '78 in Arcata, CA while I was attending Humboldt State. Our son (1st child) had recently come into our lives and was only a few weeks old. You stopped by while on business and after that visit our paths hadn't crossed again until now. I replied to the email you have posted but in the event things have changed since your last posting and you read this shoot me a reply. Mr. Duncan was our CC and Solis was our RCC. There were a few characters...i.e., Watts and McGinty to name a couple (plus I can't remember anyone else!) There was that one guy (Rojas?) I made the flying tackle on as he was running across our parade floor drunk as a skunk after liberty in SF. He was sent to X-Ray and I was sent to high-port...I wasn't drunk but burped in the CC's face upon questioning (I wasn't drunk but.....). Over 30 years now. Wow, hope the next 30 slow down!! I did my entire time after boot, and YN school, at the District Office in Honolulu ('74 to '77). Tough duty!! Returned to Governors Island for an early discharge in August '77 to make the fall semester at Humboldt. Nice to work as the District Commanders YN. I had my final orders over a year before my actual transfer. He made a call and the rest was history.

I still tell guys about the 'Earthquake!-Flood!' game that he used to get us to lighten up. What a hoot! Chuck Rainy, Bill Reynolds, Ron Denman, Charlie P., etc. Remember Kurt? How badly he wanted to stay in the Guard; He had such heart! Great memories, great mission, great service, great people. I've been an aviator (H-3s & '60s) since the beginning, lost some dear friends along the way, took a 10 year break in the reserves, then returned to active duty in '89 (all of which makes for a somewhat elderly Chief!) The Jood's office made us play a joke on him to which we dearly paid a price. We figured better to piss one man off than the whole bunch. Many a push-up later we were forgiven. While Marching on the first day with Smith, he ordered us to left, we all then broke ranks and ran back to the barrecks and sat down on the ground. The people in the JOOD's office was rolling, Smith Killed us. I spent 12 years in the CG, Declined chief promotion while on the Gulf Strike Team to pursue Environmental Work. Was in Charlie 13, Cape May, in the summer of 71. I remember BMC Birch (one of the better CC's) giving us his indoctrination speach telling us that before boot camp was over, he'd know us better than our parents did. On the eighth week of boot camp, I approached him with a question. He looked at me and said 'what's your name'? After I told him, he asked if I was in his company. After answering yes to his question , he asked me how long I'd been in his company. After replying 'sir from the beginning sir', he just shook his head and walked away. Does anyone know if a vaccine has been developed for the Cape May Crud? I swear it still visits me occasionally! Is Al's still there? It was the only place you could catch some shut-eye during the day on weekends.

I arrived at boot camp in Alameda, CA on June 11, 1973. After a week in forming company, I was assigned to Oscar Company (Oscar-Charlie). I played the E flat Alto Horn in the Marching Band. Oscar Company's Company Commander was PO1 Raymer. Chief Hastings was the Band Leader. The band and honor guard appeared in many parades on the west coast including trips to the Seattle boat races(Seafair), and to Hawaii for an armed services parade. I remember fellow Oscar Co. members Randy Beamer and Lambert. What ever happened to the base tailor Gus F**k. In September 1973, I received orders to attend the FT'A' school at the Great Lakes Navel Training Center in North Chicago. After school, I was assigned to the USCGC Morganthau #722 out of Governors Island, New York City for the remainder of my enlistment 3/1974 - 8/1977. I was separated from the Coast Guard as an FT2 at Long Beach, California. I currently live and work in Los Angeles. I hope to hear from those with shared memories.

Arrived Cape May March 12, 1972. Stayed in forming company for a week since there were too many to be in Echo-85. Served in the galley and then joined Foxtrot-85. CC was BMC Smith. Seems like there were 4 of us in forming company. When it was time for us to serve in the galley I and the others in forming company at the start were sent to Al's, I've never made so many milkshakes. In the mornings we had to clean the place and would plug in the jukebox. It had been pumped so full of quarters that it would play for hours. Honor Company was in charge of Al's as I recall and one guy was the biggest SOB I ever saw. He scared the hell out of me and was always passing through looking for something to eat. After graduation I had to wait for my class at EN-A school and was placed in permanent party and assigned base mailman for 2 weeks. I spent a total of 13 weeks at Cape May. Oh, about the guy above, Big Foot, I worked ATON with him in Charleston a couple of years later, Jim Breazelle if I recall. One hell of a nice guy. Ron Jones

QM1...lord, I can't remember my CC's name, but he was a sad alcoholic who ended up being transferred to a WLB on Adak. The day we graduated, Lynette 'Squeaky' Fromme tried to shoot President Ford in San Francisco, and we had to stand on that grinder in scorching heat, sweating out a long speech my the CO about 'the heinous attempt on the life of our commander in chief' and all I was thinking was how good a beer would taste over at the Porpoise Club! Ah yes, good ol' Alpha Company circa March 1975 under the reins of BM1 Hickerson (ice water in his veins, even when it was 105 in the shade on the Grinder!) We wuz Cock-o'-the-Walk, though. Some memories include standing at attention in a hail storm and all the bloody ears. Some poor schmuck running head down in the hail and hitting the chain at full stride and flying into the bell. I remember coming back from our 1st liberty and walking into HELL. Everyone was running or cranking, and BM1 Hickerson said some numbskull had been caught with some Sea Scout on the obstacle course. He invited me to join in or go back out to continue liberty..I beat feet outside the gate! I remember graduating in 108 degree heat, and we were dropping like flies.Several us had just double- timed down for our overseas shots, and double-timed back to get ready for the ceremony. I recall the swimmers, and also one poor guy who puked on the Grinder and had to run to the mess and get a spoon and remove the vomit to the grass because his CC liked a tidy grinder! Nice to see GMC Chamberlain on here, one of the few fond memories of Alameda I have! He was a helluva great instructor. Ahoy, Chief!

I taught;UCMJ,CG History,Survival at sea,Iwas also a Career Counselor. I watched you grow and become great sailors that I would have been proud to sail with. I do remember the pranks played on me but I know that those were used as stress relief. I was JOOD the night of the swimmers. They climbed out of the estuary onto a retired Coasties dock, bad choice of landing. DC1 Gray was my roommate on base when I first got there,Itoo wonder where he might be.
