Phila. / Gloucester reunion update. Plans are firming up for the open house and reunion scheduled for this summer so its time for an update. At this point it appears that a change of command will not be taking place at the base. This gives the planning committee a little more flexibility in putting the program together. The date for the gathering will be Friday June 13th 2008. This reunion is open to all who have served at the bases in Philadelphia and Gloucester City. The gathering during the day will include a lunch bar-b-q, a visit from a USCG drill team from the Virginia area with Civil War equipment and an operating 12lb. Dahlgren Signal Gun. We have a promise of the forty-foot utility boat, the 40450, making the trip down from New York for the day. This, of course, depends on weather conditions and the cooperation of a boat that is getting a little old. Base personnel will be conducting tours of the equipment that is available that day. There will be an all hands gathering with a brief history of Sector Delaware Bay and welcoming speeches in the morning. The base multi-purpose room will be open all day, to all visitors with memorabilia on display. This event will start at 1000 hours and be open all day until about 1630 hrs. There will be a nominal charge of about $10.00 for us to attend the daytime event to offset the costs. The planning committee is asking for digital images of pictures you may have of the either base for a continuous video display they are putting together. If you have any pictures that you can share let me know and I’ll provide an email address for you to forward them to. The idea of the evening formal dinner has been canceled due to the high costs involved. These costs would exclude many of the junior officers and enlisted people from attending. This celebration is more about them than us so we have to fend for ourselves if other activities are to be planned. I am working on an idea of a dinner cruise on The Spirit of Philadelphia, but those who attend can certainly make their own arrangements if they wish to extend the day. This cruise can be viewed at the below link. http://www.spiritofphiladelphia.com/ph/dinnerearly.jsp I will contact you after your commitment to attend with costs or any other, less expensive alternatives we may come up with. The cruise is in the range of $80.00 per person. Parking for the open house will be available in the Sheet Metal Worker’s Local 19 school parking lot located just south of the base. The dress code will be casual for the day. This is obvious but has to be mentioned anyway. We will be entering an active military base for the open house. All appropriate security measures will be in effect. Photo identification may be required for admittance. This will also be an alcohol free event. I need a commitment for the open house as soon as possible with a cut off date of March 31st to allow for planning of the meal and space requirements. Please get back to me with any questions and for a registration form. This notice is going out in both electronic and printed format. If you have email and received this by USPS and have not contacted me, please do so. Jack L. Eppert jlebpe@ verizon.net (215) 379-8732

I came to the base as an FA right out of boot camp in January 1983. I worked in the DC shop and left as a DC2 in January 1986. Someone posted a video on youtube.com using pictures taken on the base during the mid-eighties. It’s a collection of still photographs and it’s nicely done.

Len Aulett and I attended the monthly update meeting for the open house and reunion next year at the Philadelphia base. It appears that the formal dinner will be at the Sheet Metal Workers Local 19 union hall next door to the base. This will make it very convenient to attend both. This may be confirmed as soon as next month. Along with other festivities there is the possibility of having a 40' utility boat at the station. Frank Moran is currently restoring the CG40450, a boat from Gloucester NJ, and is hoping to bring her down to her last active duty home for the gathering. Details are being worked out between Frank and the base staff. Unfortunately the definite date of the open house cannot be determined until late December. There is a pending activity at the base that may be occurring that must be confirmed. I'll get the date and pass the word ASAP. We will need to commit to the base shortly after the date is picked so that preparations can continue in a timely manner. Please, if you know of anyone else who served at either base pass this information to them. We want to include as many people as we can find. The notice has been posted on every web site I can locate that Coastie's might frequent.

Coast Guard in Philadelphia 20th Anniversary Gala Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay is planning a 20th anniversary open house and formal dinner. This event will take place next summer (June/July 2008) at the Coast Guard Base in Philadelphia. Any veterans who have served at MIO Philadelphia, Base Gloucester City, New Jersey, or MSO/Group Philadelphia are invited to attend the events. Plans for the day’s activities are still being finalized, but could include a display of memorabilia and performance of the Coast Guard Band. Tours of the facility and meeting areas will be provided for guests to meet and reminisce. You may attend either the Open House or the formal dinner or both events, if so desired. The cost for the formal dinner (which will be held at a local site) is yet to be determined. Formal registration will be done through Sector Delaware Bay, but they are asking for me as the veteran’s liaison to give them an idea of how many people will be attending now. Please email or phone to let me know if you are coming and if you are bringing a guest. Official pamphlets will be available near the end of 2007, from the Sector, with a deadline of February 2008 for final registration. If you know of any other area veterans who served at Philadelphia or Gloucester, please let them know of this event. If you have any memorabilia from your time in the Philadelphia/Gloucester area, please let me know and it will be displayed (as mentioned above) during the event. Additional information will be forwarded, as it becomes available, to anyone who contacts me with his or her interest. Jack Eppert Ph: (215)379-8732 e-mail: jlebpe@verizon.net

I was stationed at Base Gloucester from 1973 to 1975 as EN3. Remember those cold inner harbor patrols on 40412. Worked with Kim Lee, Chief Raytan & cold beer in the fridge in the engine shop. Played on the softball team with a crazy Texan BM1 Akin, Kim Lee and others, good times by all. Is Capt. Goodwin still around?? Drop me an email if you were stationed there (73 thru 75) . Possible reunion in the future?

I was transferred to the Lilac from the Campbell the summer of 58. I was a machinist mate 1/c. I left the Lilac and the coast guard in Jan. 59. The day I arrived for duty on the Lilac I had my girlfriend now my wife of 48 years with me. I throw a butt out the car window as we went through the gate and unknown to the two of us it lands on the back seat of my car. By the time we got to the ship the guy on watch was pointing to a fire in the back seat. A great way to start my tour. I enjoyed my time on the Lilac.

I have been working in Philadelphia for a few years now. I pass by the new base at Delaware (Columbus Blvd) and Washington Aves quite often. Every once and a while I'll see people playing volleyball or working at the base. It reminds me of Gloucester. The other day I had to go into the Navy Yard. It's like a ghost town now, epecially the exchange area. Some of the buildings are occupied by businesses, but you still get an eerie feeling. I only see Gloucester from the Philly side. There is not much of that left, only the main building. The Navy Hospital has been demolished and now the Eagles practice field is there. The Base housing next to the hospital was also torn down and replaced with $350,000 homes. The whole area has changed. The only thing left of the old Gloucester days at the new base is the Cleat. The Catenary was replaced with the Capstan and the Red Oak was replaced with the William Tate. There are new 41 footers but not the 94 or 95. I think I saw one of the old 32 footers on the Camden side. They are using it for a city fire boat. I was at Gloucester from 81 to 86.

I was Stationed at USCG Base Gloucester city from August 1965 till June 1969, my nick name was Buck Buck. I was an Engineman in E Division on 40 & 30 footers, I was also a qualified coxswain & operated 30 & 40 footers from time to time. My nick name was given to me by my Boatswain’s Mate Hank Snider. I was also in captain of the port division for one year and inspected cargo ships for dangerous cargo placement. This was before the days of containerized cargo. I still work along the Delaware River from time to time and boy has it changed, most of the industry is gone, and almost all of the piers just are not there anymore. I took a night cruise around the port of Philadelphia a couple years ago and the port is dead compared to what it was in the late 60's.

If I am correct Bill Monagle wanted to go to the Cleat. Since he was much more dedicated than I was I can't believe they didn't let him. I have already been contacted by Joe Rider and am looking forward to seeing some of you when you get together again. Lt. Lutz never did give me a shipping over talk. Joe, got your email. Your remark certainly opens up some interesting and potentially indictment producing sea stories. Hmmm, waterskiing. I seem to remember a story about a crew that patrolled under the 'Jolly Roger'. During one of their usually eventful patrols they picked up some poor dead chap. The deceased I heard was very athletic and able to ski as well as sit on the transom and drink beer. Fortunately I don't recall any names or dates. Also, who was the guy whose car rolled off the pier? And before I should forget, remember the night we had the raw egg eating contest on the Red Oak after a night of beer and broads.

Was there from March 71 to March 73 when I 'got out'. Came from isolated duty in the Aleutians. Gloucester was real close to home. Bill Ferrary talks of crazy times there. Bill didn't tell you that he received a medal for filling a chief AND warrant officer billet on isolated duty for an extended period. Six or seven of us from those years get together at one of our homes every couple of years to get up to speed on our lives and, yes, to talk about official CG regulation waterskiing, our friends visiting us in the ET shop (hiding actually), Grandma Hoagie, naturally the babes across the street, etc., etc., etc.

Base Gloucester 3/71 - 2/73. I remember lots of crazy times. I can't tell some of them until I'm sure the statute of limitations has expired. I was an ET2 with Tom Theriault, Joe Rider, JJ Lavelle, and Glenn Wright. Although we did some goofy stuff like sleeping on matresses behind our false wall, I don't think it compared to the electrician's stunts. I forgot the EM2's name, he was a real nice guy. It seems he ordered about a 1000 sheets of sandpaper so he could refinish his motorcycle. What he got was literally a truckload, something like 1000 cases of sandpaper, all the same grit. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. The boxes were stacked high and filled the office. All the EM's had was this narrow trail to a desk. I think they returned the load. And who could forget the babes across the street, the ones to whom Rasmussen showed his honeymoon movies. I wonder what happened to Commander Wentworth? Then there was the Friday beer days. After we all got loaded, for some dumb reason we all wound up drinking beer out of EN3 Locke's greasy boot.

Lets not forget the reserves. I was a reservist on duty the second weekend of every month at Gloucester from 1971 to 1978. I was on the SAR Team, first,or second ready boat. Now I know we weren't exactly loved by the REGULARS, but you have to remember we did let you guys have weekend liberty. I have some good memories of that base, and the crews that manned her. Barge fires on Easter Saturday, tanker explosion at Marcus Hook that I heard in my home in northeast Phila. and the phone call that followed for two week active duty. Also the not quite regulation beer busts that DIDN'T happen on the base. Would love to hear from my old shipmates. Chief Danley, Captain Kunkel, LT Kern, Tom Livocz, Jim Sherrod, and names I can't remember. Drop me a line.

I had the same job as Ed Brusstar in 1960. The ET shop was in the basement. I took an overnight cruise on the Lilac once while I puzzled over a non-functioning piece of equipment; caught a ride back to the base early in the morning in the dark on one of the forty footers. I remember that at that time, the Navy started sewing their ship's names on their shoulders. We knew why the CG didn't follow suit - can you imagine walking into a bar full of sailors with the name ZINNIA or LILAC on your jumper?!

Must be showing my age - was at Base Gloucester from 1964 to 1967, then again from 1970 to 1971. Initially worked in the War Plans Office, then Personnel Office. Second trip was in the COTP Office, working for LCDR R. E. DASH. Base sure changed alot from the first tour - can't imagine what it was like when they finally decommissioned it.
