The last time I visited Taney in Baltimore, that ship's log was posted on the wall out side the ships office. Made Chief on Taney while underway. We pulled into Jacksonville a few days later and the Navy chief's club there was nice enough to let us use their club. I visited most of the Navy ships in the 'uniform of the day' and invited the Navy chiefs to my initation. I think the ALL showed up!! On 07/13/00 OTTO V. PETERSON (joe@sur-net.com) said: OOPs. Peterson (joe@sur-net.com) said: I am putting this on for my Dad, Otto. He's 80 now and not 'hip to the web' but very interested. Dad went to 'boot' at Port Townsend in '40/41 then to the Taney February of '41. He has a fantastic leather bound 14' x 9' 'logalbum' from the Taney with a hand color emobossed picture of the Taney on it in a South Pacific Island motif, in which he has many photos, signatures of shipsmates, etc. and very detailed notes of the ships activities, especially the Dec. 7, 1941 'event'. 5/43 he was transfered to CGD13 and served in several 13th stations including Port Orford and Seattle (he was an SK) and the commissioning of the USN AP142 General Muir in Portland, a Navy troop ship manned by the Coast Guard on which he went all over the world including 6 trips through the Suez Canal, 3 the Panama Canal, to India, England, Europe, NYC, Seattle and all over the Pacific. He is espeically eager to hear from coasties onboard the Muir at that time. Dad was also the Pacific fleet boxing champ, too. In '45 he was involed in the 'evolution' of CGC17 out of the 13th, aboard the Storis to '49. Then CGD9 Cleveland and was discharged in CGD1 Boston in '52 (mom had enough moving around). My Dad lives for the Guard and attends any function he can find that he can physically get to. He especially loves to hear from shipmates. His home phone in Imperial, CA is (760) 355-1756 or you can email him at my place. I'll check in from time to time. After all that Coast Guard exposure in my young life, you should know my CG services sites are Yaquina Bay and WMEC 194 Modoc. Thanks for thinking of Dad! Joe V.
