(bburch@totcon.com) said: I was hoping to see something posted from any STORIS crewmembers from her pre-Alaska days. I was assigned to her as a S1/C in 1947 at Constitution Wharf, Boston. She was still wearing her WWII gray hull paint at that time. We made two patrols to Greenland, supplying the Coast Guard manned LORAN Station at Fredericksdahl and several Danish-manned LORAN Stations. Also stopped at the Naval Station at Gronnedal and at the Island's capital town of Godthaab. It wasn't the Bering Sea, but as I recall, the Davis Straits in wintertime weren't exactly a millpond. The STORIS was commanded on the first patrol by Commander Searcy J. Lowery and on the second by Commander Kurt Kurcheski. The Exec was Lt . Robert Goehring ( later a RADM) CBM Walter Olson made both patrols. He later became the first BMCM in the Coast Guard following establishment of that rating. Between patrols, I recall being moored at Constitution Wharf across the dock when the Cutter Bibb docked with the 69 survivors of the flying boat Bermuda Sky Queen rescued off the Grand Banks. At the end of the second Greenland patrol, we tied her up at Curtis Bay, Md., and a crew was sent from Seattle to take her to the West Coast. Only a skeleton crew of the Greenland Patrol crew remained aboard for the trip around. The rest of us were re-assigned to First District Units. I think it was that experience aboard STORIS that made me decide to try for the CG Academy. And from day one as a cadet, I decided I wanted STORIS for my first assignment. STORIS moored to the west side, CONFIDENCE was on the east. Light snow the night before, light winds, calm seas. Sudently a snowball lands on STORIS Quaterdeck. WEEEEll, this insult must be avenged, so one snowball,is answered by two, and two is answered by four and four by eight and so on and so on and so on until is seems both ship's companies are involved. Then this Navy officer leaves the CONFIDENCE, the snowball fight stops. HE leaves the brow and proceeds down the Pier. (You know where we are going with this, Don't you?) HE gets about half way down the pier, and his hat flies off. Suddenly, he disappears into a snowball bank that just appears out of nowhere. For a few seconds, nothing. Then he shakes himself off and turns back towards the cutters. There is no one on deck, just the two poor QMOWs who now have their heads buried in the logbooks. He mutters something, and then storms off down the Fuel Pier. As he passes the Stern and Bow of the Cutters, He turns and flips both the Flying Fickle Finger Award. Turns again and continues off. On 03/14/97 Jim Johnson (jjohnson@cyberport.net) said: A ship as old as STORIS that has been through as much as she has must have a treasury of sea stories to tell. I think all the STORIS people should have a story or two. I recall my first time underway on STORIS was a few days after I relieved the outgoing EO. Our mission was a burial at sea. An Air Force Reserve Sargeant from Anchorage had passed away, and had requested burial at sea. STORIS got to do the honors. We had a firing squad from the Kodiak Marine Barracks, the Navy Chaplain, the widow, two surviving daughters and ship's company all at quarters on the fantail. A few miles off Kodiak, in decent weather for January, we held the service. Decent weather in January in the Gulf of Alaska is 5 to 10 degree rolls. Everyone was doing fine until the remains refuled to sink. Those body bags were pretty airtight. About that time, the family members had been through enough, the Marines started to get seasick, and the whole thing was starting to unravel. The remains had the courtesy to finally sink and solve a tough problem for us. That would have been in January, 1967. Maybe it was early February, what's the difference, winter in Alaska is all the same. STORIS was a great tour of duty, I never had another close to it. If anyone can top that story, I'll tell another. Jim Johnson On 03/12/97 Bill Jones (jkuw94a@prodigy.com) said: Was on the mighty WAG-38 from 6/62 to 1/64.
