Hello Shipmates,Good to see some old names on here from the 78-80 years of Big Red. Lots of memories flood back with names like MKCM Tribeck, Gus Gustafson, BMC Sherlock and others (that clown Digiovanni riding his unicycle on the ice). It was a great tour for me, got Big Jim's size 14 boondocker in the butt more than once, but made me a better Coastie. Remember the SAR case coming out of the Panama Canal? Still hanging around till I figure out what I want to do when I grow up.

I happily served on Big Red from 9-78 until 2-81 as SA,SN,SNBM,Diver and friend. Nothing else has compared to those times. I have recently started going through the many slides I took on our journeys which have been boxed for almost 18 years, and am excited at the chance to hear from fellow shipmates, a few of which I have located here. After Arctic West, Deepfreeze, and two Arctic East deployments, and the Baltimore Yards, I sometimes wonder why I left at all! Underway was the only way, but I also loved the great times in Wilmington,NC. I am still looking for the person who pumped rosie during a dive op!!!

Hello, shipmates. I joined the 'wind in September, '66. Took the underway training cruise, with a salty captain and a willing crew, to San Diego in early '67, this was a blast! The gunners knocked down a drone with the 5' mount, we won an 'E' for excellence and most of us got in trouble in Tijuana. Went north the summer of '67 and again in the winter of '67-'68. I struck Photographer's mate on both cruises. The winter cruise, I was up before 'Shiny assed' Phair so often they should've awarded me a plaque. There're some photos at the link below. http://pcez.com/~oteral/default.htm/cg/cgframe.html

Hello fellow breaker sailors, I served two tours on the'OLD LADY'. I went aboard the first time as a fresh DC3 out of a school. I reported to Wilmington and started my first tour working for Bill Randell. This tour was around 1977-80. I spent a good deal of time working with the MST's, (any one seen Jeff Peters). I married and moved out to kure Beach, Jeff @ I rebuilt a beach house. I drove a bright yellow 1966 Ford Van. Fond memories of all the work leading up to DeepFreeze 80. Does anyone remember the BREAKER SAILOR SONG? The deck force sang it to the POLAR SEA as we sailed up along her port side, just before the lemons were thrown! I was the Fire-Marshall during the Braswell period. MK1 Dave Pierce kept me alive! Anyone remember the B2 fire on or about thanksgiving of 79 or the MSB fire in cuba! or any of the hundreds of charlie fires? I remember the BIG MKCM Tribeck! and his crew, including 'Grape-Ape'. On my second tour, 1983-85 I was the guy with the sailboard who sailed in the Artic and would love to have any pictures anyone might have of me sailing. Well enough, I retire in Feb of 99 as a DCC at the Atlantic Strike Team in Ft. Dix NJ. Hope to hear from any of those who remember me and wish to say hi. Would really like to hear from Jeff Peters, Dave Pierce(an Air Hog)and, Hank Conners,. I recently saw the Old Lady in VA. she hasn't made it to the scrap yard yet! I was ex-Navy after three years aboard USS AMERICA and a Vietnam tour. Got out of the Navy and jumped into the Coast Guard, reporting to NORTHWIND around January 1975. She was being re-engined and re-commissioned at Curtis Bay. Served as a YN2 in the Ship's Office with XO R. E. Phelps and YNC Johnson until summer of 1977 when I transferred to CGHQ. The first CO was Captain V. W. Driggers who was later relieved by Captain Joe Wubbold. I knew NORTHWIND was decommissioned in 1989 but recently learned with sadness the she is being broken up in Brownsvlle, Texas. I had hoped some use could be found for her. The NORTHWIND experience was the highlight of my years in military service. Whether in good times, bad times, or daily routine, NORTHWIND made a lasting impression on all who served. Godspeed NORTHWIND. Tally Ho Hut Point.

9-69 to 6-71 I was better known as FOX on the deck force. Worst time, but most memorable, was being stuck for 2 weeks in the Arctic. On the way back we were crippled- one prop shorn off, the other shaft bent and the forward berthing flooded. Hey those were the days!

Northwind was my first duty station after graduating from USCGA in '68. CAPT Phair was CO when I reported aboard; he was relieved by DJ McCann; CDR Gordon Hall was XO (both 4.0 sailors). We made several Arctic patrols, including the nearly 6-month Manhattan project over the top and back in '69. While in Thule waiting for the Manhattan to arrive, we went on a mercy mission to help the Westwind who had run aground on an uncharted pinnacle and flooded several compartments...including dry stores. When we arrived on scene, all they wanted (and needed!) was dry toilet paper! Also had a band on board...Don Miller, Lynn Cox, Bill Colvin, and myself...we played at the Top O' the World Club while docked in Thule. After I replaced LT(jg) Johnnie Erickson as First Lieutenant, one of the deck gang (I think he was from Wyoming) broke out his cowboy boots, hat, and lariat (while we were hove to in the ice somewhere north of Barrow) and decided he was going to lasso a polar bear that was foraging around in the garbage we had dumped on the ice the night before. I don't remember who stopped him from becoming bear appetizer...but it was probably BMC Carlson (one of the all-time great steamers!)...or BM1 Halsey or BM1 Hisle. We had some pretty good Saturday beer parties on the ice, and even played tackle football while stuck in the ice for two weeks somewhere WNW of Kotzebue. Were we having fun then?? Does anyone out there know whatever became of Don Miller?

Enjoyed it when Storm'n Norman got us stuck off Halett Station on our way down to McMurdo Station. Enjoyed an extra week and a half in ChirstChurch NZ as the Japanese Icebreaker FUJI got stuck for the third year in a row. We even got to sail in the Indian Ocean and missed Sidney and Hobart Austrialia. Have you ever heard of Latoka, Fiji Islands? Don't remember to much except the CDR in charge of the AIRDET ran an orange beatle (VW) in the side of the ship. Uncle Don made LCDR and a zoomie jg made LT. What a wet down party they had there. Visited the Ship in 76 or 77 when it pulled into Hono - it was painted red by then.

I was also on board when Ensign "Bingo" Bingham busted Eagle Three in the Carribean to give WAGB her first leaf on the stack. I lived in forward berthing, top rack (with an I beam running its length) port side next to the ladder leading down. Our ports of call included Gitmo, Curacao Netherland Antillies, Cartagena Columbia. I left her much less a snot nosed kid than when I arrived.
