I was stationed on the Northwind in 1954 when it was the first ship to cross the top of the world. Are there any alums out there that would like to share some memories? I have many photos and a complete log of the trip. I now live at Port Luldow, WA and recently purchased a 42 foot power boat. I have named the boat 'Northwind' in memory of a great ship.

Hello to all...my father skippered the Northwind in the late 60s and early 70s. While he spent his entire career in the USCG, there is no question where the highlight of his time was, and it was with you who served with him on the Northwind. Today, 12-8-00, marks the third anniversary of my father's death, and I want to thank you all for this page, and the warmth and comfort I have taken in reviewing it today. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all, and should you remember, raise a glass to the memory of my father, Captain Donald J. McCann.

Howdy shipmates, I served aboard the Northwind from July '67 to April '70. I was an ET-2. I had some great times. Anyone on the Manhatten escort trip. We ended up in Thule, Greenland with a bad engine. I remember a polar bear trying to climb onboard on a previous trip. Anyone remember seeing the sign pole with numerous cities listed with their mileage drifting on an ice flow?

Oh, my! I guess I was never the sharpest knief in the box. I just realized the Northwind was recently scrapped, not, as I had assumed, scrapped in 1989 after the Battleship North Carolina museum rejected her. If I had known the Northwind was in the ready reserve fleet, I would have raised a hubbub--as I did when the Tamaroa was decommissioned in 1995 in Portsmouth, NH. In that battle, as a columnist for local papers, I fought to keep the Tam in Ports. The Inteprid Museum took the Tam followed by the Hudson River Park Trust. Now a group of us are looking at three more suitors so the battle for this ship as a museum goes on. If I had only known one of my ships--the Northwind was at risk, I would have tried to save her as the museum she deserve to be. Like the Tam she might still be around. I feel so bad about this, both as a Northwind sailor, free lance writer and a maritime preservationist. I really dropped the ball.

I served onboard in 61-62 made one and part of a Bearing Sea Patrol. Have a lot of good memories and a few bad ones. I remember the bear and caibou hunt. That was a big old bear he got. Don't remember the guys name that had the license.I remember the nite all our guys went to the Marine Club on Adak and had a good time then came back and had a big fight amonst themselves on the mess deck. I remember the nite we clipped the ice shelve and it threw everybody on the mess deck out of their seats. What a mess. I was an EM1 during that time and my worst memory is when we were getting ready to get underway and when we rocked the shafts the motor rooms lite up like a christmas tree. When we pulled the inspection covers we found all that scrap metal in both motors. I've often wondered what that investigation revealed.

My Dad, Frederick Folger, was navigations officer aboard the Northwind in the early '60's. He served under then-Captain Russell R. Waesche (son of the man after whom Waesche Hall is named at USCGA). Although it was a 'hardship' duty for Dad (keeping him away from his young family), we all remember it well and fondly. Dad died April 3rd this year. It seems fitting they 'broke the mold' on the Northwind as well. Regards, Cathy

I still remember Buford humping the Ol' Man's leg during the Hump Day festivities in the hanger. Gibbons is out on the coast somewhere. Anyone track down MST Jeff Peters? Back now in good ol' NC now as a computer geek. Check out my email if you are ever in Greensboro.

Served aboard from 1/82 to 5/83. I had some of the best and worst times of my life on the 'Big Red One.' (GITMO '82 and AES '82). I was called 'Cunningham,' 'Doc' (after Larry Washburn went to HM school, I worked in sickbay with Chief Browning), and by a few 'Boat-Doc' (I stood BMOW watches underway). I went to HS school in '83 and then to 'the Rock' (Governor's Island) for the rest of my stay in the Guard. I got out in '86 and went to college. Despite all the years, I remember many people and events like it was yesterday. I remember losing the anchor during the naval minesweeping exercise (I was standing anchor watch when the anchor chain parted), the Sondestrom float test -'jeeps don't float even above the arctic circle,' Ski polishing the bell for the 'drop your socks and grab your c...s.' reveille pipe, 'steel beach' (getting some color back between Iceland and home) to name a few a events. A few of the people: Carl Lallerstedt and Espinoza who went to bootcamp with me and endured the 'hey boot, fresh meat' chants as we first walked aboard, John Feorenzo my guitar pal, Mac Shelton, Larry Washburn, Pete Rose, Ken Pederson (sp?) for turning me on to Jimmy Buffett and his cool tweety bird/sparks tattoo, Chief Browning who taught me a lot of things that made HS school easier, Chief Styron who made the lives of those in deckforce hell, Lou Ribble, Mark Remy, George Keaney, Tony Persico, Mr. Wray the 'coolest' bridge officer, and many others. As echoed by all: From North to South, Red Ones Rule, Breaker Sailor, Back and Ram.

Served aboard from 8/81-12/82 and from 9/83-4/84. Yes Roy i remeber the STREAK also, and the nice hole in the ship. Sitting in a port list was not fun for several days as the DC2 fixed it. Loved playing football on the ice was great. It was the only time we could assault the officers(Finley Brothers) and get away with it. I also remember several guys missing or almost missing underway times in foreign ports. The guys who decided to go glacier climbing in trucks that were not their own, that was hilarious. I have good memories of alot of the guys I served with. Sandman, Eason, Owen,Lou, Rybarski, and most of the guys in Engineering. I was honored to be selected to be a part of the decommissioning crew, but I had to turn the opportunity down because I had already been hired as a Law Enforcement Officer in Florida prior to my end of active service. I had recieved a call from LCDR Turek asking, but circumstances of money prevailed. The guys in 'A-Gang' were wonderful to work with. I wish I could see those guys and talk about old times. If any body knows where the other guys are, please feel free to E-mail me. Remember always, Breaker sailors rule, Back and Ram.

I am sad to read of the demise of the Grand Old Lady of the North. When I left her after AES 87, I was given to believe that she would be preserved as part of the Battleship North Carolina Museum. Can someone tell me what happened? Like the Westwind(in Mobile, Al before her, the Northwind was passed up, and the ship went to the breakers. The Northwind might have become our nation's museum honoring its contribution to polar exploration. It might have ranked up along side Nanson's Fram, Amundunson's Gjoa, Scott and Shackleton's Discovery, and Larson's St. Roche. Instead, she joins other legendary ships--the Bear, Cowin, orginal Northland, and Perry's Roosvelt in a list of forgotten ships. Of consolation is the on-going effort to save the Glacier, something we breaker sailors should support.
