On 10/28/97 Jim Meehan (Bourree@aol.com) said: Halloween!! Twenty-eight years have passed since the first Halloween Party that was celebrated within the bulkheads of the Good Ship Morgenthau. The outpouring of participation was remarkable. It was thought that it would be a basic party with a handful of costumed sailors showing up, but it was much more than that. I can remember the Ops Rec Deck being a beehive of activity as we tried to come up with costumes to outdo each other, and it was not confined to the Ops section. There were participants from every area on the ship. There was a prize for the best costume (I think I should have won, but I remember the prize going to DCC Al Hebert) (I think the selection was political, but who am I) What was the prize? A superb dining experience at HECTOR'S HASH HOUSE, hosted by none other than our leader, James Hector (see his remarks at the table). The highlight of the evening for me was when Lt. Jim Woodle (M.C. for the evening because he was the only one on board who could operate a microphone) made the announcement that the Great Pumpkin had made a visit to the ship. He was tipped off that a handful of enlisted men (with some officer participation) stole into officer country with weather balloon and air hose in trail and proceeded to blow up that balloon in LTJG Hank Post's stateroom. Mr. Post had to pop the balloon in order to gain entrance into the room, and as I recall, there was a bit of a mess to be cleaned up afterwards. That was one of a few thousand practical jokes that were played out on the ship during its first year. The good natured fun was some of the stuff that solidified the crew. I'd be interested in hearing about some of the jokes/pranks pulled throughout the years. On 10/13/97 Stuart W. I've got a great picture of the Morg at the fule dock in Kodiak. There used to be a copy outside the CO's cabin before whe was FRAMED. I guess there's a lot of new rates now. I came on board as an SNRD and left as an RD 3 with a second major in Electronic Warfare . . . me and Point Loma are old friends. Is Morg still out of Alameda CA? I was far from perfect but did my job well -- very well. I'm proud to have served on her. Oh, by the way, does the near collision story with the USS Germantown still float around? It's very true and let no bridge hand forget and let no RD ever say "I wasn't the Watch Sup." We just got back on Christmas day from a WESTPAC deployment with the Navy to the Arabian gulf, a rather long deployment and a first for a cutter to that part of the world. I'm the 1STLT on there so STC's niece works for me, she's a good worker. I tried recalling the article on the Morgenthau's deployment to Viet Nam but was unable to, as AOL keeps telling me they don't recognize the URL. Can anyone help me get this? We have a brass plate in the wardroom that was made from the prop that was broken after Morgenthau ran aground, and everyone onboard is curious as to what "the rest of the story" is. My neice Sunshine is a SN on it now striking cook. She couldn't even microwave water so I know the food won't change. I always had plenty of PB&J in my locker. Did a shit load of ASW (back when the CG did ASW), played fisheries with Fred Poppowell (certified PSYCHO). On 01/04/97 Anthony M. I have put together and placed on the Internet a rather detailed account of the Morgenthau's Vietnam deployment. The article I submitted is a melding of two official Coast Guard "blurbs" about the Morgenthau with a little of me put in for good measure. The photo came into my possession after the Plank Owner Reunion. Lou (Ret. CWO4) and Cora Jensen are the proud owners of the photo, and graciously sent me negatives they had made along with a couple of prints. I had a friend of mine scan the photo for me, and I forwarded the file to Jerry Lentz to have it downsized, who in turn sent it on to Fred (our hero), who placed it in our Table. Thanks to Lou, Cora, Pete (my friend/co-worker), Jerry and finally, Fred. I'd also like to thank the photographer, but I don't know who he or she is. If anyone knows the person who took the photo let him/her know that I have taken the liberty to share the "masterpiece" with all who visit our "Table". Best memory; 1st ALPAT, rebuilt both mains, and lost both boilers. Did the whole patrol in January with no heat or water. What fun we had. came on as Mk3 left as Mk2. Came aboard as an ET3 and left as an ET2. Many fond memories of the ship and our crew. We had our first reunion this past July and had a great time "Living in the Past". Looking forward to our next reunion in 1999. On 12/01/96 Raymond L. Wingo (rwingo@concentric.net) said: Stationed aboard Morgenthau when homeported in New York. Came aboard as FNDC and left as DC3.
