On 12/06/00 Tim Donaldson (timpdonaldson@cox.net) said: Mr Wasserman...Neil. I agree with you completly! I was at the Mighty 'I' in the mid 90's and I am sad to say that not much has seemed to change. At the time, I assumed that they were in the process of fixing her up. When I was visiting there was a hugh hole around the scuttle to the laundry room and it was covered by a sheet of plywood. if it is still the same, Lord held her. It seems that they have continued to allow her to slip to join her sisters. WE MUST DO SOMETHING! Maybe if we hold all our reunions at the ship it would help... I urge you all to call the number Mr. Wasserman provided and demand more be done. And I hope you get a better response than I did. V/R, Tim On 12/03/00 Neil Wasserman (uscgcbibb whec31@aol.com) said: Hi everyone and happy Holidays to you all. It was a sad day for me on Nov 25 heading home to Fla I stopped at Patriots Point S.C. to show my to boys the sister ship of the Bibb ( that I was onboard from 1976-1979). Well guys let me tell you this the Ingham looks like crap they are not taking care of her at all, she is rusting away and taking on water. I was real sad looking at her not believing what i was seeing! Patriots Point is a maritime museum they get 11.00 for adults and 6.00 dollars for children over the age of 6yrs old .I tried to get in touch with mr burnette but he has not called me at all . WE NEED TO PUT THE HEAT ON HIM . Hopefully we can get the Ingham to look like the proud ship she once was.Mr Burnette's tel # is 1-843-884-2727 I will always be proud to be a 327FT secratary class sailor, as well as the Cutter Bibb the Cutter Ingham has alot of history and we should not see her be neglected .. On 11/19/00 Gene Kiss (EKiss1@aol.com) said: In 1940 after completing training on Ellis Island our group proceeded to Boston. We were split up. Some of us went on the Ingham, Duane, and Bibb. I was on the Ingham untill end of 1943. Did weather patroll, relieved the Cambell in Lisbon Portugal. Does anyone remember when all hands including officers were ordered to paint the ship gray.Enjoyed painting all that shiny brass. We left Portugal for Boston were they redone the cutter adding armement camaflauging the Ingham and we started Convoying to England not flying the American Flag? I mentioned this to Historian of Goast Guard Scott Price and he said he hadn't heard that and is interested to hear from more shipmates about this and will keep the Ingham file open. I have been trying to locate shipmates who served with me at that time. So far Walter Jacoby e-mailed me some interesting data backing me up. We were on our 3rd. or 4th. convoy when we were watching a movie and the lights went on and we were told that Pearl Harbor was bombed and it was not a drill. If anyone remembers this please e-mail me EKiss1@aol.com Reading the comments I read Al Klunders message on Conrad Lips.He was on the Ingham during my time and we have e-mailed each other. Also Al Klunder was on the 3inc. Anti Aircraft gun and I have pictures of him at the gun. I would like to hear from any shipmate who sailed with me. Frank Toubek has e-mailed me and has helpted me many times. He gave me the Freds Place Web and I think it is great. I am looking foward to meeting him In Jan.when he comes to Vero Beach Fl.I Live 40 min.from Vero in Melbourn Fl. Thanks for reading my message and hope to hear from old shipmates On 11/03/00 Ron Tulppo (rtulppo@aol.com) said: I was on the Ingham as a SKC & SKCS from 69-71. On 08/27/00 Greg Mete (gmete@aol.com) said: Just wanted to say hi to all my old Igham shipmates. I served onboard 80 & 81. Reading the remarks about other Mighty I sailors makes me proud. I just retired on July 1st. Left after 20 years...time to go, I guess. The Igham and Legare are the only things I miss. On 08/21/00 Richard Fritz (peppersnasco@sbcglobal.net) said: I served aboard the Ingham from '78 to '79 in the Radio shack. Had loads of fun and a bunch of chipping and painting. Radio, at that time, was a definite 'Rumor Control'. Especially during the Cuban refugee crisis. Or, was it a crisis? Anyway, my best shot was when I received my transfer orders not quite serving a 1 1/2' on the Ingham. The XO said, 'I don't who you know, but I don't think it's right'.My good friend, RM1, Dave Evans, had the ear of the commander at MSO Hampton Roads, and --- you guessed it -- cherry duty till I left. Definitely a great 4 years. Drop a line, Coasties! I'd like to hear from you. Take care! On 07/22/00 George Fewell (gfewell@worldnet.att.net) said: I arrived on Ingham just after she returned from the Europe trip in 81. I had the orders before the trip and tried to get transferred before the trip, but the command I was at would not let me go. I was an RM1 then and a year later, when Charile Pugh made RM1, one of us had to go and I got orders. I had to walk over to the other pier and take over the radio room on Taney. It was kind of fun to have served on 2 327's back to back. They were good old ships. On 06/11/00 Keys Rhodes (keysr@earthlink.net) said: Wow! I'm amazed to find a comment I put up in December 1996 in the archive! The remarks are still good, but my e-mail address has changed, so use this one. Would be great to see some other Inghamits! On 04/22/00 Bill Wester (wawhome@aol.com) said: I read the history under statistics and the CIC fire was reported by me while on fire watch that night. I was really scared, because it was above the captains cabin and I thought he was on board and set off the alarm. I'll never forget that night, beause my fire station was the recipocating water pump and it wouldn't pump because the boilers weren't fired up yet. I really thought we were going to loose the ship. Anybody else remember that night? We ended up missing a patrol to ocean station charlie due to the fire. Instead we moved to Hampton Rhodes for repairs which took a month. This is Rick Carraway....I was a SN in the Gunnery section on the Ingham during the 68-69 Viet-Nam deployment. Before the deployment, I was on deck force with BM3 Besecker and BM3 Delph . During the Viet Deployment, I worked as a Gunners Mate under Master Chief Casalez, GM1 Willie Burchett, GM3 Dave Gardener, GM3 D.D. Moore, and with SN Fred Davis, and SN J.R. Williams. I also worked with the 'FT' crew.....FT1 Larry Miner, FT2 Mike Klekovic, SNFT Bill Sirman, and FT3 Cecil Swain. I'm sure you remember the 'North Carolina Navy'...we all ran around together and hung out on the mess deck or wherever we could hide. Even flew the NC State Flag as a 'Battle Jack'. FT3 Cecil Swain, SN Ricky West, SN Tommy Morrow, MMC Herb Morris, LCDR Doug Johnson, and myself were all from Carteret County. Cecil was living in Hawaii the last I heard. Ricky West married his high school sweetheart and I think they still live in Wilmington. Tommy owns several surf shops here and in other towns. CDR Johnson is enjoying retirement at Harkers Island, N.C. And I went to school and came back to live in Morehead City. You should remember the rides we made up US 13 and US 17 trying to get back to Norfolk from Beaufort at 3:00 AM! Screeching up into the parking lot at two minutes to six! Cecil would try to come to Beaufort if he had over three hours off! I remember hanging out in the galley when I was on Deck watch and everybody else was asleep! I also remember the sandwiches and milk and coffee when General Quarters ran all night. 'H and I Fire'.......Harassment and Interdiction! Harass US and Interdict OUR SLEEP! Would be good to hear from more of the guys......Charlie Besecker, Rob Dunaway, and so many others. Get in touch and let me know how you've been! On 07/11/99 Doug Ramsay (dramsay@submarinesystems.com) said: I just remembered something that other Ingham sailors might find amusing. In the crew's head, forward, there was a commode stall that had been stenciled 'MEDICAL USE ONLY'. I never knew what it referred to, just assumed it was a GQ battle dressing station or whatever. So I just used that facility as necesary for about 18 months. I happend to mention it to Barry Cates or Rob Hultgren, as an unusual location for a battle dressing station, when they advised me that it was reserved for those with crabs!!! Fortunately I never contracted anything from the seat. On 07/11/99 Doug Ramsay (dramsay@submarinesystems.com) said: Great to see so many people I remember from CGC Ingham, '79-'80. Mr. Johnson was my Ops Boss, went to RD 'A' school with Chuck Stayrook. (I have a photo of myself, Chuck Stayrook and Don Whitman taken at CDR Moynihan - CDR Sidall change of command.) RM Fergy played lots of poker with RD1 'Caveman' Calvert. I saw Kevin Shaw about 4 years ago at AT&T in Oakton, VA. Last time I spoke to Don Whitman he was an Air Traffic Controller in Miami. I have some photos of the crew, one was of Mark Jani with the Bos'ns pipe at colors that I should have won an award for! I do remember the Palmer incident at Key West. I had better cut this off now, but I have many great memories of my time aboard CGC Ingham. I am still at sea, working as an ocean cable splicer. On 06/25/99 Frank Tubeck (frank2bec@prodigy.net) said: The following is quoted from 'Gob's Gab', the CGC INGHAM Association newsletter of June, 1999: 'The in-house paint crew began a project about three weeks ago(whenever weather permitted)to paint INGHAM's hull and superstructure. Most of the paint required has been procured, and her starboard side is currently a patchwork of primer and rust encapsulation. On her superstructure, work had already been in progress for several months to replace wasted handrails. 'Since the new marina is in place, the wakes of pleasure boats have presented a challenge in mooring INGHAM and LAFFEY securely up forward. As a result, Mr. Burnette is in the process of contracting a consultant to come up with the cost effective alternatives to better secure the bows of the two ships. He has budgeted a significant amount of money for the next fiscal year to execute the project' The foregoing is presented so those who are interested will know that their Association is actively working with the management of Patriot's Point regarding the care and preservation of our ship. To keep abreast of the ship progress and other related events, join the Associatiion! E-mail me your snail mail address, and I will send you a copy of Gob's Gab and an application blank. On 06/14/99 Robert Hubeli (former coastie) (hubeli@mindspring.com) said: I recently visited Charleston SC and while there visited Patriots Point. I was primarily interested in going aboard Ingham although I did go aboard Yorktown,Laffey and the Sub. Quite a display, but I was saddened to see Ingham in such a bad state of disrepair on her exterior. It looks as though she takes a back seat to the Navy's vessels. She wasn't too bad on the inside but she looked like a teenager with a bad case of Acne due to the grey primer and rust spots all over her. Even the CG insignia on her bow was very faded. Does anyone know who is in charge of maintaining her and how is the maintenance funded? I think we need to put a bug in someones ear because visitors get a wrong idea about the CG when they see her. Pulled quite a few Ocean Station Hotel's with her and two trips to Guantanamo Bay. The first we got E's all around and the second one was not so 'fun'. I am now retired (CWO3) with only memories of 'riding the rag cans' back and forth across in front of the boilers on those calm 'hotel' seas in the north Atlantic! Of more interest is that Don Balsly is organizing a reunion of the INGHAM Association for October, 1999 to coincide with the 'Tall Stacks' steamboat festival. We will be headquartered at the Drawbridge Estates in Kentucky, just across the Ohio River from Cincinatti. It will be a great time. The summer 1981 Europe Cadet Cruise was the best -- you'd pay a fortune to travel to France, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, and England with any travel agency -- what a deal we had!
