Speck (jsx2tn@bellsouth.net) said: I came across an Eastwind (WAGB-279) reunion notice on a military website recently and the name Eastwind brought back great memories of a detachment I completed in 1967. In 1967, I was with a U.S. Navy Helicopter Squadron, HC-4, stationed in Lakehurst, NJ, that provided a helo detachment to the U.S. Coast Guard to assist with a difficult Arctic circumnavigation that later had to be aborted because of the Russians. We were teamed up with the Edisto. I am now retired, from the U.S. Navy and a civilian aviaiton career with Federal Express Corp, and living in East Tennessee in Maryville, TN, a small city south of Knoxville, TN. At the time of the detachment I was a Navy ADJ1. We departed Boston in July of 1967 and crossed the Arctic Circle at 10°32’ E. We returned back to Boston in October 1967. The exact wording of the operation was attempting to circumnavigate the North Pole via Arctic Basin. I remember the XO’s name was E.L. Samuel. If I remember the skipper’s nickname was “Bull” or something like that. Shipmates, I will say it was one of the most interesting and difficult cruises but I enjoyed every minute of it and would do it again in a flash. My wife and I are hoping to make the reunion next May. He will arrive at my home from Florida to do this chore for me. He being the last skipper of the Mighty `E' is the man who rewrote and edited the Navigational Manual when he was stationed at HQs. Who better to spell check and fact check my work of the last 3+ years? If there is anyone else who wants to be included in their own 'honor page(s), e-mail me now, PDQ. I will answer with a Q-form all who are in the book have filled out and signed and mailed to me. Thanks again to all you wonderful folks who have assisted me in writing the bio on a 'Great Lady of the Seas'! If Capt' Bill doesn't find too much for me to correct or verify, I hope to have the original manuscript delivered to the USCC Museum New London, Ct and the USCG History Dept. WDC before long. I have wanted to for years, to write book on great memories of the ship and its crew. The first 100 chapters would not be boaring. Guess I could not name names, places, incidents, etc. I look forward to the next reunion. The first 'mutiny' and the news paper was the Navy Times (topic was mutual Exchnage of station request from the Eastwind and not related to the second mutiny. The second 'mutiny' was actual fact/incident that never made it into the newspaper. The 2nd incident was resolved to the satisfaction of the crew before we arrived in NZ... TRYING TO LOCATE : James Grayson (EN2,Chicago), Ken Murry (EM2, Baltimore, MY), Blackburn (EN2, Kansas) On 08/21/00 Harold Allen (handjallen@monmouth.com) said: The 'Mutiny' came from a navy sailor in McMurdo sound using a radio freq. almost the same as the Eastwind. He complained about conditions etc. and almost immediatly thereafter the Eastwind transmitted it's call sign and someone in the states picked the end of his transmission and the beginning of ours and called newspapers with the story causing all sorts of problems as you can remember. I wonder if that penguin ever sobered up at Anvers shore party. On 08/21/00 Jerry Murdock (jerry41@eastex.net) said: I served on the Eastwind from the fall of 1962 until the spring of 1965 (ET3 - ET2) - 2 McMurdos & 1 Antarctic peninsula (shore party at Anvers Island) & survived shore patrol duty in Valpo. I see that several of my old shipmates have posted since the last time I looked here. Just goes to show that some breaker sailors do (eventually) return to normal. I, for one remember the 'mutiny', but I never found out where the story originated. I wonder if anyone kept a copy of the newspaper with the story? I recall several 'O' division people harassing LCDR 'Z' by standing around in groups quietly chanting 'mumble, mumble, mumble, mutiny, mutiny, mutiny' - all in fun, of course. I had called Howard's phone number in Illinois and received no answer untill last Monday, when a lady answered. She knew of any Howard Strauss so I wrote a letter to him as he travled a lot to all reunions. His son wrote back and said his 'father passed away 9-19-99 heart attack and stroke' very little pain as it was quick. I have compiled 26 pages 'Howard Strauss Honor Pages' for mailing to his family for grandchildren as requested. Howard was one of the engineering section to board the German trawler Externstein, and de-boobie-trap the ship. He and Mueller renamed the valves, lines, and controls from German to English, and was part of the rechristening the ship the 'EASTBREEZE' and took her to Iceland first, then to Constitution Pier for display in Boston, Ma.
