said: The TANEY was my 'Boot Camp'. Don't know if the if the Treasury was broke or they were just
moving basic training from Cape May, NJ to Mayport, Fla. or what, but SHE was it. Inducted Dec. 2,
1948,a green kid from Concord, Ca., barely 17 yrs. old. Had my shots, issued my sea bag, boarded the
Taney and left for Sta. Able in the Gulf of Alaska on Dec. 5th. Spent the next three days at the
port side slop shoot. Finally an older sailor convinced me to go to mess and eat a greasy pork chop.
Wasn't sick a day after that and we had some pretty rough seas in the Gulf. Wish I knew who that
guy was-- he saved my life! There was someone sicker than I was. I believe his name was Allioto of
the fisherman's wharf familly of all people. He was so bad off they had to rig a hammock for him.
Thank God I got over it when I did. Learned my first lesson -- always eat before going to sea.
Imagine 'Pappy' Haynes as your Co. commander, '----bird'. No close order drills; learned cadence at
the end of a holy stone stick, '----bird'. Spent alot of bilge time recovering lucky bag items also.
Seemed to always catch the mid watch, which was okay, except for mid watch rations of saltines and
sardines. What the hay, they kept my stomach on an even keel. Never stood a wheel watch before and
had to learn fast, because I remember lots of 'watch your helm', 'watch your helm' ! As I said we
had some pretty rough seas. Gentlemen --- that was my boot camp. But I hated to leave her after
just getting the hang of things. We returned to Government Island about Jan. 5, 1949 and after a few
days was transferred to the Escanaba, and wouldn't you know --- we left for Sta. Baker or Fox, I'm
not sure what it was called then. Spent most of my first 2-1/2 mos. at sea. Welcome to the Coast
Guard!! Wouldn't trade any of it -- things got better.

first shot from the Taney that morning. He also served on the USN (CG manned) Gen. Muir (a 'plank

duty in Paris after WW-II. Dad was on the Storis just after it came around from Greenland (he helped

around the world. He was also Pacific Fleet heavy weight boxing champ during WW-II (6'4' and 250
lbs). He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Assoc., CG Combat Vets., and the Bering Sea
Patrol and the VFW. He remained active in those organizations, giving his last Pearl Harbor/Taney
interview on KIRO radio Seattle at the request of D-13 on 12-7-01. CG Headquarters web site

quickly made the following announcement 'Now, all third class petty officers lay to the mess deck.'
I now qualified for this and went on inside to see what was going on, and quickly realized the
