I haven't been on Fred's in a while. I retired in 2002. We live in Palmer, Alaska and I work for the Dept. of Corrections. I was on the Dew from Jan. 1976 to July 1977. Man was that a long time ago. To Jim Dupree, I think I remember QM2 Trout. Was he still there in 76?

I served on the Sundew in Charlevoix, Michigan back in 1974 and 1975. I might stand out a bit because I was the only black Quartermaster to serve aboard her at the time, and I am 6'6' tall, so they had to lengthen my rack so I could sleep better! QM1 Jim Smith was on board during that time, and both Bill Clark and QM2 Trout served with me on the bridge. I rented a room at Ida Wolsheimer's house with QM2 Trout and Joe Schrank... Many wonderful memories and great shipmates. (Irish, Edwards, Doc Fenner, Max, Telez, Swansinger, Bill Clark and many more)... Anyone serving on her during this time - or anyone inclined to write for that matter - please drop me a line... THANKS!

It's nice to hear all the compliments about the SUNDEW, thank you. I was the last 'Doc' onboard and I was also the last guy to 'run the boom and set the last buoy'. All of the guys who qual'd on the boom scratched their name into a piece of leather that covers the arm rest in front of the controls in the boom shack, check it out if you get a chance. I'm now stationed at Marine Safety Unit Wilmington, NC as its Independent Corpsman. Lots of great memories. As part of the Decom crew we took pride in handing her over to the city. I've been up to Duluth a few times since then (family lives there) but haven't stopped by the boat. Next time though I'll stop by.

I just came upon this older message after posting mine. Does anyone know where Paul Atkinson is? He would have been one that I helped off of the lighthouse, onto our lifeboat, and brought back to the ship. On04/08/05 Tom Lease said:
I just came upon this 'Fredsplace.org' when I was trying to get some pictures of the Sundew for my kids to see, yes, I am one of those who liked kids so much I remarried after a divorce to a younger women and started another whole family again! I also was in hopes of finding someone who still had a picture or newscopy of a rescue on a lighthouse where I was one of three (I was the ship diver) in the lifeboat doing a rollercoaster on 20' + waves to get the guys of the lighthouse with a cracked seawall. The picture was on the front of the Charlevoix newspaper when it occured, in 1970. I was the guy that broke the rules on Bravo 50 that weekend, figuring nothing ever really happened while we were on alert! I went to visit friends in Detroit, had a weekend of heavy partying and drinking, even was drinking Southern Comfort on the bus to Petoskey. Upon getting a hitched ride to the ship and arriving at the wee hours of the morning, instead of finding a little bit of light by the guard shack to get on the ship and slip quietly into bed, all lights were on, the lines were being pulled in, and if I were five minutes later, I would have missed ship! Talk about a quick sober up. I was on the bridge with Quartermaster Cranston, couldn't remember other names. Over half the ship became seasick, amazing I wasn't due to the weekend I had. If you were there, you had to remember that day! The Sundew could only get so close to the lighthouse. As a diver, I had to put on my wetsuit, then myself, an engineman, and I couldn't remember the other guy, were lowered into the water to make our way to the lighthouse. The waves were over 20 feet and the water came completely over the lifeboat as we were thrown into a dive with each wave into the water, myself holding onto a bow line while standing up, kind of feeling like a bull rider on a big wet steer! Anyway, when we reached the lighthouse the occupants were very happy indeed to have us get there and get them off of a place that they were sure was going to be gobbled up by the Great Lake! Anyway, that probably was my most memorable experience in the Guard, and that front page picture somehow disappeared over the years. It was a classic, it showed us just as we were having our bow hit the water and getting covered. Anyway, hopefully this message will reach someone who was on the ship at the same time I was, and might have this keepsake in their collection. The crew was great. I often speak about how we always had Sesame Street on during breakfast, man we really needed a life, didn't we? Anyway, get back to me, I'd love to find someone I knew, and hopefully the picture/article! Tom Lease

I quess I was lucky, I was given an invitation by Mr Wolfe the day prior to the Decom. If you were there, I was the oldish Auxilarist in the front row of the back section with the Video Camera. I have a suggetion. Other Retired Cutters have associations, why not Sundew? At least we would have her to visit and hold reunions, unlike Sedge, Westwind and Northwind which were disposed of. Is anybody interested? The ideal folks to head this up would be the former shipmates who live in or near Duluth. Another question, does the DECC have plans to fill out the spaces with uniforms and artifacts? I have a few I would be willing to donate. In my era my 'Sickbay' was under the ladder to the cabin the space now occupied by the extra DC Gear. I have the old (Pre 1974) uniforms, old books, pictures, charts etc that I am willing to send if they would be used.

On06/13/04 Ed Keppers said:
just a note to all who were at the decom. I came back later in the day and talked to a couple of the guys from the DECC who were standing around on the bouy deck waiting for the tug to come and move her, which ultimately didnt show, told them I was stationed on board from 89-91 and asked if I could come aboard, to my suprise they said sure we should be allowed 'one last look', couldnt go below deck but it was still nice to walk the decks one more time, will be back after the fourth to tour below deck. hats off the the fellas from the DECC, a real class act in my book. I think it was they just didnt want to many people milling around after the ceremony but still a shame none the less that most people didnt get to see her as we remember her from the inside out. God speed to all and perhaps we'll run into each other again.

What a great Decom., wish I could have gone aboard one last time but I live here in Duluth so am looking foward to going aboard when she is opened to the public. I'll take the Grandkids while they are still young, when they get older they won't want to go with Grandpa to see a 'old Boat', it's just not 'cool'... Wish I could have met some of you old timers at the Decom., I was on the Sundew as a DC/1 in 71 / 73, enjoyed the tour.

On06/03/04 Ex-seaman Crowley said:
I was there, in Duluth as well, for the Decom. Was glad to see some old 'sea-legs' from my time on her, 1980-1982. H-man, Stormin Norman, Mr. Northrup, Mr. Peel, Capt's Lundberg and Romo. For John Conner, you should have looked up one of the Officers of the Sundew crew. That's how I got hold of an invitation. It was kind of, well, anal for them not to allow the members of the 'old crews', to go aboard. Had I known, I had let one of my shipmates, use mine to go aboard. Towards the end of the visitation, it seems they were letting almost anyone on. At least one of the officers I was stationed with, talked his way onboard. I did not see that he had an invite, anyway. Overall, a good time. Went to some of the old haunts, Grandma's, bars. Park Point. Fair winds and following seas, Arrrr.

John Conner, I sailed on Sundew as an MK2/MK1 from august 1985 to june 1988 and as an MKC from august 1996- october 1997 when I retired I just attended the decommisioning ceremony and It was bittersweet to see and hear the Dew's orders read, the really sad part was they wouldn't let us on her for a last look around, (by invitation only) I am fortunate enough to live here so when I feel the need I can go and visit her. I had some seriously memorable times aboard Sundew those people and their influences on me will be forever etched in my mind. The lessons I learned on her I took with me for the rest of a very rewarding career. Anyone I served with during my years on Sundew, I would love to hear from you so please drop me a line at mkccgret@aol.com

Just got home from Duluth and the decom, what a sad event, the old gal never looked more beautiful than she did sitting there yesterday, the last crew really did a great job at making her look her best. Thanks guys you did a fine job. Talked to a couple of guys from the DECC, the Dew is going to be moved over beside the Irvin and they are planning on having her opened for the fourth of July and is possibly going to be staffed by the Aux from there in town for tours. They also informed me that they would be looking for volunteers to help with maintenance, tours and the such. They will be posting information about the Dew on there website @ DECC.org in the near future. Was nice to see a few familiar faces and remember the good 'ol days, maybe some day we'll all meet again on the deck of the Dew. Would it be a good idea if old Dew crewmembers could get togethr every year on 27 May 'Sundew day' for a reunion, unless somebody else has a better day in mind. Oh by the way, the battery on my camcorder went dead before the decom was finished and I missed all the good stuff at the end, if anybody was there and has a copy I would eternally be in your debt. thanks again and God bless.

And for those who are involved with the USCG, National Facility Security Plan Review Center Customer Help Desk. I actually made the recording for the Msgs, once you dial into that phone number. Any one remember when the Sundew was breaking ice is Lake Mich. around 1963-64 and the Due hit a Wind row so hard that the main bolt broke off and fell on the armature in the Main motor and we were dead in the water for many hours untill the Mackinaw came and tow us to Wisconsin and were in the Yords for about three month. After the armature was removed and sent to Pittsburgh Pa it returned and the dock crew hosted by the packing and it broke and had to be return to Pittsburgh for inspection. A sad day for anyone who knew Mr. Tim Slattery. Always there for any Coastie that needed a hand. I don't think there was anyone ever stationed in Dultuh that didn't know him. 24 Oct 2003 - Search ends for Duluth area photographer DULUTH, Minn.-- The Coast Guard has ended its search for a local Duluth a man who fell off a 14-foot aluminum boat this afternoon. The body of Tim Slattery a photographer from Duluth was recovered by divers from the St. Louis County Sheriffs Department not far from where his motorboat was found. Coast Guard Group Sault Ste. Marie received a call from the motor vessel COLUMBIA STAR at 4:30 p.m. stating that they saw a man fall overboard from his boat in Duluth Harbor. A rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Duluth arrived on scene within 10 minutes of receiving the call. Once on scene, they found the 14-foot boat running in circles and immediately began searching for the missing man. The other agencies that assisted the Coast Guard are the St. Louis County Sheriffs Department, Minnesota State Police and Civil Air Patrol.

It was the 'DEW' Mike. I remember being awakened by several 'pipes' well after taps. Back in those days I could sleep through almost anything, but I could hear the mains absoloutly screamin' and no sound of 'crunch crunch'. I wondered what in the heck was going on. Seems the ice field sort of 'snuck up' on the bridge watch. The wind was blowin' a gale. As the ship was working to free itself the sea water intake for the Stbd. MDE came out of the water or was full of ice, not sure which. I know we were 'rolled over' pretty good for a while . Had they over heated the engine we would heve been in deep doo doo. I remember asking the bridge what the problem was. Frank Lynch says, why don't you come up and find out!!! As I was heading for the bridge crewmen kept asking me if we were going to abandon ship.. I said 'in this weather'. Nah I'll stick with the old girl. I'll leave when I can walk off the bridge wing. I did manage to calm a couple people down. There must have been 15 people in the wheel house, and yes the whole off watch crew was on the mess deck . The ice sheet to port was very heavy and fixed to shore. The ice sheet to starboard was about 2 miles wide but not fixed to shore. The watch had missed it closing on us and did not get U/W in time to swing the bow into the oncoming field (which we could have broken easily enough). It was pretty tense for a while. I remember telling Capt. Lundberg to go easy on the engines or else we were going to have to walk, and this old Bosn don't walk on water, frozen or not! He told me If I had an idea 'go for it' Dave Gaines was just happy to have somebody get the Captain off his back. I went back to the fantail where I could see the ice around the stern and also feel the wind, took the conn of the ship from there. Took me three tries but I finally got he right combination of backing about 2/3rds and going forward hard as I could with full left rudder. I caught a break from the wind on the third try and the stern swung just a little off the port ice field (I admit I was 'cheating' by having 'rudder on' while backing, but I had a little patch of open water. I put the rudder admidship and backed her hard. The stern took a bite into the moving ice sheet and we were free from the lateral push. Backed about 50 yards and then drove straight ahead into the 'fixed ice' and we continued on into Thunder Bay. As usual it was a combination of luck and hard work. Nights like that are what made it 'fun'. Looking back later on I am still not sure how much danger we were in. I dont think the ice was heavy enough to crush the 180's hull plate, but it might have 'popped' us out on the hard sheet and we could have rolled over sideways. Hard to realize it was 20 some years ago!!! I guess the SUNDEW is on the chopping block this year or next. I hope it works out to keep her in Duluth as a museum or something. One of the 180's should be there permanantly. Good to hear from you. Stay out of trouble!!!

Does anyone remember the night in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Running from the ice flow. Hove to on the solid ice. Wind shifted and the ice started piling up. Actually tilted us. Ice was moving over the gunwhales sliding across the bouy deck. Had everyone up, sitting on the Mess Deck. Thought we were all gonna hafta hoof it across the ice. They thought The ship might be crushed by the ice. Now,that i think about it, don't recall whether it was Sundew or Mesquite, Duluth. 1980 - 1982

On the great side I have to include BM1 Joe Minter (thanks for everything), BM1 Wayne Frank (hard but good), CWO Shogren (who I later worked for as a BM1 and made Chief under, I consider this guy MY MENTOR and thank him for making my career). Well if anyone out there recognizes my name and wants to talk, drop me a line.

Hello old shipmates. I served on the Sundew from 4 July 83 to 1 Sept 85. I came right from boot camp to the best unit I have served so far. The skipper was Dave Jones and the XO was Mr Lorzell. My EO was Larry Peel and since I was a fireman, I worked in main prop. I escaped main prop in early 85 to strike DC under DC1 Ben Massey. I pinned on my 3rd class crows in the summer of 85 and since have led a very interesting career. I'm currently stationed at the Gulf Strike Team in Mobile, Al. Hope to see some of you in the future. Happy Holidays

I was on board from 93'through 97'.I had ALOT of good times and yes SOME bad times but all in all it was probably the best experiences I have ever had. Too many times port calls turned into some really good nights. Four years on the 'DEW' turned out to be great, good friends, good times, and good experiences. If you remember me I would like to chat.

Went to the old Dew out of Boot Camp in Dec 1973. First thing I remember was breaking ice, which we seemed to do until I left her a BM2 in May 1976. Some of my best memorys came from that tour. Worked for BMC Ross and BM1 Curtis. We saw alot of the Great Lakes breaking ice every winter. Wouldn't trade those days for anything. Let me hear from some of you old guys.

I have been stationed on the Sundew from June 95 to present. She is in great shape and has a lot of years of service left. Since stationed on board, we have navigated all Great Lakes. We visited Lake Ontario to clean up Galloo Island in the summer of 95. We pulled into Toledo for training, Cleveland for the ATON confrence, and Put-in-Bay for a lot of fun. We visited Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. We sailed through the turbulant Lake Huron and some of us couldn't keep lunch down. We stopped in Cheboygan, Michigan and Mackinac Island. We sailed to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin (home away from home for D9 cutters). We pulled into the Soo several times (although we have yet to stay the night). And we have hit all of the usual Lake Superior ports: Houghton, Marquette, Isle Royale, Washburn, Two Harbors, and Thunder Bay. Where next? Who knows! QM2 Parks.

I was on the USCGC Sundew in 67-68 and we had a rescue of our own crewmembers off of White Shoals lighthouse. The small boat's bow line parted while four of the crew members were aboard, in heavy seas, and it swung around into an iceberg. The water was so cold that they almost immediately cramped into the fetal position, and by the time we could recover them, their body temps had dropped to a dangerous level. All recovered, and we had a reporter from the Charlevoix newspaper who got pictures and wrote the story which went world-wide. Exciting times!

To any of the crewmembers that were on the C.G.C. Sundew in the spring of 1970 when you had to rescue the crewmembers off Lansing Shoals Lightstation when we were destroyed by a freak storm. I just want to thank-you guys for saving my butt just never had the time to thank you . and who ever gave me some dry cloths -- thanks

Hi John: Glad to see you've still got that laconic humor after these 30 years! I came aboard as OPS in Feb 67, stayed 'till Jul 68 when I left for RONONE. I relieved Harry Immer, Dale Foster was CO, Jon Uithol XO, Charley Dean EO and Frank Risley was 1st Lt. I'm sure you well remember Chief Sixberry and BM1 Dilly--actually I'm pretty shocked that all those names/faces came rolling so easily from my memory! I check on the ol girl a couple times a year when I pass thru Duluth--she's looking a lot better at 53 than I am.

Hi! My name is John Stemmons, formerly BM2AN-1 Stemmons. I served aboard the USCGC Sundew for about 1 1/2 years between December 1965 and September 1967. We were stationed at Charlevoix, MI then and it was nine months of winter and 3 months of poor skiing. We worked the Mackinaw bridge buoys among other things, and we also broke a lot of ice in Michigan, Huron, and Whitefish Bay, Superior. We performed logistics to the lighthouses and got in on some SAR also. As hard as it was, I sure miss those days, and would like to hear from anyone who served on the Sundew, especially anyone who was aboard then.
