commemoration of Pearl Harbor, on the return trip from a long ALPAT? I do believe more than a few
were out on deck painting over salt and rust on the trip down from Kodiak to Honolulu to make it
look nice and white for the festivities. Or the “nation building” trip to Majuro and Kosrae. The
things we do…glad to be retired out, but good memories. Stay safe!

We had a couple crazy times in those port calls. Most guys were lucky to get back to the ship in

first mid-patrol break after coming round from Baltimore--a new boot, fresh out of Alameda. Stayed
aboard for a couple of years (1/80-5/82) as a boatswain's mate striker. Back then the deck force
featured Chief Morris and Howard Cooley, Cliff Kaldor, 'Bos'n Bob' Lenzi, Paolo Shere, Kurt Lootens
and Rod Smith. Dave 'Commando' Capps came in from SP duty at Petaluma. And the deck apes: Steve
Hatcher, Scott Hellige, Don Lasswell, Paul Nichols, Roland Levesque, Mark (Got a cigarette?')
Nichman, Scott Hellige, James Stewart, Mike Nevin, Dan Middlebrook, Doug Butcher, Mike and Ray
Johnson, Mark Coffman, Chris Cordellos, Jim Severn, Lew Brooks, Marc Connell, Vavricka, Tate, and
that joker with the Fender Stratocaster who thought he was Jeff Beck....Howard Cooley shipped out
and Wayne Amedy came in as our new first class--a fireplug of a man with the most anarchic sense of
humor...Bruce Hibbs came in as our new chief after Chief Morris left...B.J. Spano relieved Del Terry
as our 1st L.T. I also remember Doc Ottman, Ensign 'Jolly Jack' Gunther ('When I'm done with my
hitch, I'm going to become a pirate'), Ensign Michael Nerino (Poster Boy for the Academy), and of
course, Johnson & Johnson. ...I was the deck ape who dumped a beer over Ensign Davin Cilley's head
at the Red Dog in Juneau (he reciprocated by dumping a bucket of ice down my pants)...I remember the
Great Pollywog Rebellion of 1980...the Waterless Patrol of 1981...the Pizza Night when the captain
and the officers were flunked by the CMAA and had to cook the pizzas...midrats...endless rounds as
BMOW...many haircuts from Chief Harrold...Larry Phillip, the second class sonarman who moved into
the deck thirty-man to be with his buddies...the 'Kill Marks' on the balloon shelter for all the
helicopters that left the ship by crane rather than flying away...16mm movies on the
messdeck...drydock at the yard in Hunter's Point...I achieved a small notoriety in 1982 when I
started dating an ensign from the Morgenthau (we later married and later still, divorced). At that
time women were still a novelty in the service (we had none aboard the Sherm, and the Morg had
become known as 'The Love Boat'), and those dates ashore were a loosely kept secret, but a secret
all the same. If anyone remembers my sorry ass and wants to say hello, by all means feel free...Bob

importantly, just got back from Party Vallarty!!! How many remember the SOUTHPAT in 91??? Well,
needless to say I didn't whoop it up like I did back then (drinking & puking everywhere) but it was
still really cool to be there and toss back a few. I was driving my fiance crazy because I
wouldn't shut up with the, 'me and my buddies went to this place, that bar and drank sooo much
over at this place called.' He, he...she would just roll her eyes and pretend to give two cr*ps.

that!!!

to ASM school. I see a lot of familiar names like Sean Stuckey, Miguel Beltran and Steve Bailing my
old roommates from the Rm's quarters. Steve Bailing brought up some stories of Jamaica and Mexico.
We had a couple crazy times in those port calls. Most guys were lucky to get back to the ship in
time for morning quarters. I remember Miguel Beltran almost got washed over board in Bering Sea
while the decks were secure because of heavy weather, I think he quit smoking on the spot!!! That
scared the smoking addiction right out of him!!!. I live in florida now and I am a reservist at
station sand key in clearwater, fl. I would love to hear from some of you.

first mid-patrol break after coming round from Baltimore--a new boot, fresh out of Alameda. Stayed
aboard for a couple of years (1/80-5/82) as a boatswain's mate striker.

Tasty, wasn't it? I'm sure everyone remembers the motley batch of FT's we had. Willie, Alden, Oz,
Braz, Stokes, Reed and Zim. Running that shop certainly was a leadership challenge. Southpat '91 was
a great trip. ALPATS weren't; except for the occasional fights that broke out. ENS Burke vs. ENS
Flynn, Alden vs. Walker. Jim, that was excellent dental repair work by the way. Marc, who would ever
have imagined you'd make it to LTjg? Hey, if any of you are tuning in, drop me a line. I'd love to
