Served on the Sedge from 12/77 to 06/79. Worked on 'E' gang for MKC Trumblee, then MKC Moon...haven't heard from Moon since I left. Haven't heard from Pete Thysell or Tim Riggs in awhile. Glad to hear Cliver retired and is living in Tok. This year is my 20th year in the Sacramento Fire Dept...retirement is just a few years away. Now working in Homeland Security (in Sacramento) and been working with an ex shipmate who works in port security for the Calif. Maritme Academy. Our fire chief just retired and has been in the reserves for over 30 yrs...he's now the reserve district master chief...seems like I've been surrounded by coasties all my life. Haven't been back to Homer since 1989, but would like to plan a fishing trip there...there's an retired fireman I worked with who has a place in Anchor Point and says the fishing is awesome. Thanks for hosting Mike...anymore updates on our former shipmates? I ran into Troy Graves is Sacramento in the early 90's...he was one of the deckies who worked with Garza and 'Baby Boats'

Came to the Sedge from the Sycamore (river tender in Memphis) in 1967-1968. Its ironic the new Sycamore is now in Cordova. Saw the huge fife start at the commercial dock from the QM shack from a spark and turned in the alarm. Found myself and others in the water with a P 500 fighting the fire with huge explosions overhead. Always wanted to get some photos of us fighting the fire. Will never forget innocently firing a huge snowball off the starboard side of the bridge just as a lieutenant walked into view and took a direct hit in the back of the head. I ducked into the bridge and disappeared undetected. If I had wanted to hit him, I couldn't have done it in a Million shots aiming. I think his name was Lt. Ard if I remember. Now you know Lt. I remember the Cordova hotel and bar. We used to forget to go home from the bar at night in the summer since there wasn't one. Would like to hear from old shipmates from the period. visit me at www.greatrivertours.com

Woody, What's up.. Yes, I'm in these pictures (Page 1- Pic 7). Thanks so much for the pics. I lost all my pics that I had taken on a divorce and never reclaimed them so it's very nice to have some pics during this period of my life. It was a great time on the Sedge. It's so hard to beleive this was 19 years ago. Are you still in the culinary arts field? I believe you were a SS3 at the time.. I hope all is well with you and thanks for the pics again. It was great to see some old friends.

I served on the CGC Sedge from Nov. 1988 - Oct. 1990 and had a great time and made some great friends even though I have lost contact with them. The CO at the time was LTCDR Cappacci and don't remember who the XO was... I went to Cape May 9/26/88 and reported to the Sedge thereafter. The Sedge was underway when i was to report and met the cutter in Kodiak. A huge change from Houston, Tx. I remember reporting to CG air station Kodiak waiting on the Sedge and they had beer machines and saying to myself, I like this place. Worked the Exxon Valdez disaster in 3/89 and was on watch when we came about to the Valdez. Theoritically, I was first to see the distressed super tanker. I missed the Honolulu trip by just a couple weeks which sucked. Spent several months in Bellingham, Wa. while in dry dock. It was a great experience on the Sedge. I think about the USCG everyday and would be retiring in 11 months if I would of stayed in. I now live in San Antonio, Tx working for a vacation resort. BM3 Martinez, BM3 Steve Miller, SN Cambell (CO) and SN Kelley (FL) BM3 Gilliken (AK) GMC Marion BM2 Sundeen MKC Sherouse QM2 Dixon BMC Ball SS1 Crawley CWO Edwards. I miss you guys and enjoyed sailing with you. I am saddened to hear that the Sedge was decommissioned but it will always be in my heart.

Jim, Cant swear to it but I heard second hand several years ago that Salty was a Conservation Officer and still lived in AK someplace. Cecil A. Kephart (rimway@yahoo.com) Just finished reading all the comments and only found one entry from the mid '50's . I served aboard the Sedge l8 months, from January '54 to June '55. I started as a SA on deck and one cold morning we were chipping ice and cleaning the bouy deck when The LCDR Robert A. Moss , better known as 'The Ram' yelled down from the bridge 'Kephart, can you type' I told him I could and he says , your the new Yeoman. Best deal that ever happened to me in that cold winter. Ended the deck work and night watches. Loved the time spent there, the crew and the officers. Had a ball fishing but got knocked out of a bear hunt on the Afognak Islands due to a storm and they cancelled my leave to rush out to the Alutians for a rescue. Have many more sea stories I would like to share with anyone from that period. Would like to locate 'The Ram' too, if he is still alive and kicking, and thank him or making us keep the cleanest bouy tender in Alaskan waters. Hope to hear from anyone from those years, probably the best of my service years. Mike Carr, thanks for hosting this page, glad I found it even if I don't hear form anyone I've enjoyed reading all the comments.

It may not be to late Dye. The 'sedge' will be in San Pedro, Ca for two or three weeks. They will strip her down and train the Ethiopian's. The USCGC Hickory will replace the 'sedge' when ever they get thru building her. The 'sedge' crew will fly to Merrit, Wisconsin were the 'hickory' is beign built. Pretty fair turn out mostly locals and the Coast Guard Auxilary. 20 - 30 former sedgeites and most of them from them 70's and Alaska. I think the EM3 was there he had an eskimo wife. No one knew of Soltis. Teedrick sent in the Sandeen sea story about losing his leg. I in handed the GM story about trying to ring the ships bell with an M16 and for some reason that one didn't get read. I thought 'herm' might show or maybe Rhodes. sniff sniff oh well. Homer is just another tourist trap these days with all kinds of artsy fartsy shops. In fact there are more art shops than there are bars. 'THE CLUB' is now known as 'Alice's Champagne Palace' and the coasties still hang out there. The 'Lands End' is open year around with a bar and fancy restaurant along with three times more rooms. The sad story is that crab ain't king no more and believe it or not I had hard time finding any and when I did it cost $37 for a plate of the stuff.

On11/14/02 Jim Dye said:
DP: Glad someone made it to Homer. I read about the transfer. Guess that's better than ending up as razor blades. Safe bet she won't be breaking ice in her new life. The article I read said it's easier to give her away than to clean her up enough to be broken into scrap - EPA regs and all. BG: I thought it was Storis that we rammed, not Connie. One of my favorite stories from my time on board. Glad no one was hurt but it was kind of funny: OK check the throttle linkage. WHAM! Guess it works. Well, I'm sorry I couldn't get there. I had some frequent flier miles and wanted to bring my daughter but stuff happens. Couldn't break away. Happy to hear the Salty Dog is still there. I have my old Spit Rat jacket in the back of the closet, still. Dunk: while you're there, fall in the small boat harbor once for me.

It burned down as well. They like to burn things down around here, so that they can collect the insurance. Other than that not much else has changed in 25 years. They still have the right number of bars in Homer in proportion to the population and I'll keep you girls up to date, about the Sedge and not the bars. I hope I wasn't the only fool to show up for this thing. Otherwise it will be real lonely in the Salty Dawg. They will be reading the story about Sandeen losing his leg.

Anyone who served aboard Sedge 1962-64 when my father LCDR Dan Jones commanded, please contact me. Am gathering info for my deceased father's grandchildren, so that they may learn more about him. Also have several slides and about 30 mins of 8mm film on CDROM I am willing to share. As a boy I heard of your activities putting out the fire in May 1963 (we evacuated our house on Second St) and your deeds immediately following the earthquake 38 years ago today, but I saw them through the eyes of a young boy. My brother tells me Frank Reed, who died on Cape St. Elias during the quake, was at our house, but regrettably I cannot recall his face. Does anyone know if there is any kind of plaque there or at HQ or SOMEWHERE in remembrance of his loss? He was on temp duty off Sedge. I can only guess how you all must have felt when radio traffic (read it at jacksjoint.com) came across telling you of his loss. Please contact me, whether your memories of my father are positive or negative. Thanks.

Sherm Acord, CWO4 (RET). Went all the way from Kodiak to Homer to be EO in 1977. Lots of great memories, and some I'd rather forget (housing officer!)

Sedge, then homeported in Kodiak, was my first assignment after OCS, from November 1955 to June 1957. Summer 1956 participated in Arctic DEWLINE construction taskforce. Great memories.

I have been looking for my brother Arthur David MacCornac aka Arthur "Red" Beers. He served on the Sedge as far as I can tell in 1949, this is base on an old photo. Any one who served or knows anyone that served on the Sedge during this time please respond. Any information that would assistin my search would be appreciated thank you, Susan MacCornac Zeigler at this time

Stationed on the Sedge 83-85 as a JO (Ens/Ltjg). Had a great time in Homer but spent way too much time underway. Lots of good memories buoy tending, REFTRA in Hawaii, and hauling buoys to the SE AK. Ran into one of the cooks (can't remember his name) that was stationed then a couple of years ago in Vero Beach, Fl. He is now a flight instructor in helicopters. Amazing!
