I was just browsing and noticed a good deal of my fellow shipmates had left a post or two. I retired after 22 plus years on 1 Nov. '07. Ended my time in at R/O Bronx (stand down), I told all of my recruits that if they ever get a chance go to the Sea. It was the best unit by far. Hope to hear from any of the wolfpack gang.

Hello Jim and everyone. My name is Charles Key. I was a Petty Officer (RD3) on the Polar Sea from Aug. 77 to Jan 78. As you all know the old gril was having problems with the variable pitch props. Spent a lot of time @ Todd Shipyard, but never got a chance to get underway. I still live in the Seattle area, and would love to hear from anyone, especially if you were on the Polar Sea during that time. Thank you all and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hysterical to read the comments about my husband, BMC Gary E. Van Aller. He hasn't changed much from when you all knew him. Yes, Jim, we headed to the small boat station in Eureka, CA ('91-94), then Gary was tranferred to the CGC Key Biscayne, in Corpus Christi ('95-98), then to the Point Bridge in Marina del Rey, CA ('98-00), and we've been in the Houston/Galveston, TX, area since 2000). Gary doesn't get online much, but I'd be happy to pass on any messages.

They were in Honolulu a couple of weeks ago and had a chance to get on 'the big red' and they were headed for Sydney and I would imagine they are there now headed to McMurdo. Remembering the last time leaving the ice and it was like leaving a friend. Sounds strange but true. Did get a tour of the ship and it is slightly bigger than the 'Wind' to say the least. Did buy a Polar Sea hat but don't tell my group. They will throw me overboard.

Hi guys. Hal here again checking in. I've been writing to some of the guys and checking this site on and off. 25 years. Doesn't seem possible does it? I'm still in the oil patch in the Gulf of Mexico, Commercial Diver for around 16 years, then Diving supervisor / Superintendent, now one of the senior vessel superintendents for Oceaneering International. Having fun swinging heavy iron over board in the deep water and helping to make the oil and gas flow. I live in East Texas in the Lake Country, on 26 acres with my wife and son. Spend my off time working on the property, Duck hunting, fishing, and training my bird dog. I'll always remember our time on the Polar Sea as some of the best times of my life. 25 years....... wow.

I sailed on the Northwind between '75 and '77 ....... For a number of years I've been thinking of going back to visit these great places. I just found a terrific deal on cruises to the Arctic and Antarctica. Celebrity Cruises has a polar class Russian icebreaker on a 13 day cruise to the Arctic (on 9/4) and 11 day cruises to Antarctica (on 10/25 and 11/6). I've shopped prices and these cruises look like a great deal. Since the cruises take place soon it looks like Celebrity is offering last minute deals. The price is roughly $5,000 per person (includes all food, drinks, excursions, etc.). Similar cruises with other companies go for about twice that amout. The icebreaker has zodiacs for exploring and even two helicopters that take passengers out to view the area. I got this information from Celebrity's website (www.celebrity.com). I called the number they show (866-973-8466) to get the price information. Anyway, I'm seriously considering taking one of these cruises and thought I'd pass the information on to those of you who may be interested too.

hello every one. Hal Roemer here, I just found this site. Sorry for not checking in before. I remember my time on the Sea as some of the best years of my life, even the rough times. Was on board from '78 to '81. got stuck up north on what would come to be called the 'Polar Sea Drift Project'. it was cool being an essential personnel for about the first .... week.... then reality set in.... busted rudder and two wheels that rotated the same direction, means a lot of right turns. Have been in the Commercial Diving buisness for the last 20 + years in the Gulf of Mexico. Decided after getting out, I was qualified to chip and paint or dive.....

Deep Freeze 82 seemes like along time ago, yet I remember it like it was yesterday. I just came upon a picture of the bandaid that we painted over the gash we received from the tanker we were escorting in to McMurdo. How about the roll we took during the hurricane off Cape Adair? The week in Wellington and in Sidney, made it all worth while. The North trips afterwards wern't as much fun, but were times that will never be forgotten!

Also a proud plank owner and first occupant of 2-57-1-l. When I reported to CG Base Seattle to join the crew only BMC Eaton and Capt. Cueroni had also reported. Soon we grew too big for Base Seattle (now closed) and moved to Sandpoint (also closed-but a nice park). It was a great life experience seeing it all come together. I have often thought there is someone on watch onboard as there has been since 1977 when we reported aboard. I have loosely followed the ship over the years and see Ens. Powers and BM2 McGonigal made second tours onboard. I have some pictures, a list of those who reported aboard before the commissioning that I would make available to those interested. I know where BM1 Rogers is but that's it.

Proud Plankowner and denizen of the barracks at Sand Point beginning in September 1976, and transferring to Group Seattle in June of 1978. Wish I knew where that board-mounted CW key was that had the names of the original RM crew engraved on it! RMC Stone, RM1 Davis, RM1 Schimelpfenig, RM1 Tigilau, RM2 Brahm...uh oh, I'm getting old, the other two RM2's slip my mind...and the sole RM3, me, the passageway waxer. I was so proud of being in that ship, and it was a beautiful and powerful thing in spite of being ridiculed by the 'sandpeebs' at Pier 36. If I'd known what fun icebreaker duty was I'd have stayed longer. I see a few familiar names here (Brahm, Monty Compton, Nelson Lorezca); hope you guys drop me a line.

I still have on my office wall a helo picture of us stuck near a 50-foot thick ice floe 'way off Point Barrow - talk about a bad day at the office! I am trying to remember some details of that time: didn't we also have a bum rudder as well as one bad screw? And the hangar door froze open, I remember...anyway, my best to all - drop me a note

Hello all fellow WAGB 11 shipmates. Ron Lee here, proud Plank Owner. I served on building 11 during her precommision and commission special years of 76-77. Did my time at Sand Point sitting in classes. We were all so glad when the day finally came that it was time to go to the warehouse to prepare her supplies. I believe the SK3's name that I worked with was Davoli. Anybody remember him? I will never forget the first time I saw the SEA. She was as beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside. Man did she shine!!! She should have, because her brand new SA's from boot camp kept her painted and swabbed daily. We didn't have anything else to do but paint her, clean her and train for her. The Boatswain's gang made sure we did it right; BMCS Eaton, BMC Rogers, BM2 Mike McGonigal and BM2 Terry Roe. I'll always remember the amazement I felt when we finally took her to dry dock for her screws. Standing beneath her huge girth certainly put you in perspective. Does anyone remember SS1 Ed Lively's galley food? Or Captain (Admiral) Curoni cutting the cake at the precommision ceremony. I sure enjoyed my days in Seattle and on Pier 36. Don't remember any 7.0 earthquakes though. I sure was glad when we finally left on the first shakedown to San Fran. That is until I learned how deathly sea sick I got. I guess that's why I spent the next 22 years in Aviation. But I will never forget my start in the Coast Guard and what a great time we all had on board the Polar Sea. Would enjoy hearing from any of you that I served with.

I am living in Charlottesville, VA now working at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory as an Electrical Engineering Technologist. Ahhh... nice R&D job.... Sure beats proping your matress up with your foul weather gear in 20+ foot seas so you don't roll out! GI bill sure paid off... used ever dime of it for 4.5 years of college. If you remember me, send me an email sometime.

To T. Richardson...I believe the POLAR SEA was stuck during the winter of 80-81, as it was on Deep Freeze '80 during the winter of 79-80. Also, the CO was John Dirschell, who, I believe has passed away. You'll note his name on the Memorial Board. To Todd Minnick, I was on POLAR SEA from 78-80 and didn't remember your father's name. A check of the list of crew in the Deep Freeze '80 cruise book didn't show his name either. Sorry.

On 06/01/00 T. Richardson said:
Wow, great to find this site! I was on POLAR SEA WAGB-11 when we broke both outboard screws above Point Barrow, Alaska in the dead of winter back in 79-80. We were buzzed by Russian Mig's and most of the crew was flown off to Anchorage. We were stuck and had to limp back using ice flows and the center screw. Capt William Dirschell was Commanding and I remember a few guys like Hal Romer. Dang how names fade but faces are remembered forever. Anyone on then? Please drop me a line.

Now finishing my BS (4.0gpa) ..trying to get into Law School. Like most retirees, you don't realize how good you had it till its over. Nelson, I've got to go dig in my pictures of days gone by, but I know I've got a picture of you and I sitting at sand point, half in the bag playing harmonicas. First visit to the site! Good to see how current and past sailors of this cutter remember the good times. I served 06-93 thru 06-95 made BM3 learned a lot from Capt. Boyer and the junior enlisted that I worked with. Wish I could turn the hands of time and serve once again with the crew. My most memorable time aboard was when we went to the Geographical North Pole 90N. That was an amaizing trip. One missing blade of our starboard side propeller. Matt Dini had great footage on our weekly NROU news! The dive team seem to enjoy the dip in the freezing water. Send my best to all who served aboard her. God bless.

All sailors of the coldest regions, glad to see such participation. I served aboard the Sea from 3/93 - 10/94. As for MKC West, he was my new MKC at STA HUMBAY. As for Gary Van Aller, he was the BM1 at STA HUMBAY when I got there. Gregg Meader was there too. If that is not enough, Jeff Siron is there at HUMBAY now. At first I hated the Coast Guard lifestyle, now I can't stop remembering. Funny how time allows people to grow. Now, I'm an Engineering student with hopes of coming back after graduation. I told you MKC West, I really was going to school when I got out. Just wanna' say hi to everyone who has sailed aboard the finest ship afloat. Thanks for the memories. Hi Paul, Matt, Justin, Brett, Gary, Josh, Coby, and all others who I have seen here!! :)
