Hi All: I've just posted some pictures of the Northwind on the Northwind Yahoo Group. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USCGCNorthwind/ These were pictures Mark Gibbons sent home to friends and family while he was out on the Northwind with you guys. I have hi-res versions if anyone would like them. I am particularly interested in help if anyone can identify the fellow who's mooning the camera in the second of two shots..... :-) Thanks for the kind notes some of you have sent. I sure miss Mark, and it helps to know that his friends will remember him for a long long time. Best regards, Karen

I had the honor to be aboard the Grand Old Lady of the North for her final cruise, AES-88, in support of the CEAREX scientific mission. I was the bottom topography guy for the Naval Research Lab. Northwind performed marvelously, was able to cut a hole for the RV Polarbjorn to get into, waited until she began freezing in tightly before heading back to Tromso in October 1988. She dropped the civilians in Tromso, then headed back to Wilmington to be decommissioned by Capt Ken Morris a couple of months later. For a while, we thought she might become a museum ship in Wilmington, but alas, the Coast Guard sold her for scrap and she was discombobulated in 1999--a sad way to go out. My hat's off to the Coasties for always being able to get the hard jobs done, and done right (most of the time). I still have my cruise book.

Thanks Guys - for those of you that have reached out to me and Mark's family. I thought you might want to read his citation for the Coast Guard Medal. He received this for the rescue in 1991 when he was on the Tamaroa later featured in 'The Perfect Storm' . It is posted on the Coast Guard web site: http://www.uscg.mil/history/awards/CGMedal_Citations_G_J.html According to others that served with Mark that night - contrary to Hollywood and modern myth, the CO of the Tamaroa did not order the cargo nets to be deployed over the side of the vessel as depicted in the Movie. In real life this was Mark's idea and it resulted in the Tamaroa being able to save 4 lives. He'll forever be my hero.

For those of you that might have served with him - I am sad to confirm news of the death of Mark Gibbons. If you have stories to share his family and I would be very interested to hear from you. Best regards, Karen Burns////////// Mark Paul Gibbons, 52, of 3534 Hodges Road, Scranton, died early Saturday [Dec. 1, 2007] at his home after a battle with cancer. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, August 15, 1955, he was the son of Kenneth Gibbons and Judith Gibbons who both survive. He retired from the United States Coast Guard as a Boatswains Mate First Class and was the recipient of the Extraordinary Heroism Medal and Award presented for heroic service while serving on the Coast Guard Cutter Tamaroa off the coast of Gloucester, Mass. After retiring from the service, he worked with the N. C. Department of Transportation for ten years at the Swan Quarter yard. He participated in the men’s league recreation program in Belhaven during the summer seasons. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Bryan Funeral Service. The Reverend Mark Morgan, Pastor of Swan Quarter Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. Surviving are his father, Kenneth Gibbons of Frederick, Maryland; his mother, Judith Gibbons of McLean, Virginia; three sisters, Patty Walsh of Frisco, Colorado, Susan Cohen of Centennial, Colorado and Judy Biltcliffe of Oakdale, Connecticut. I served in the Coast Guard from 1952 to 1956. I served as an ET on the USCGC's Bering Strait and Wachusett, but spent the most time on the Northwind, making one winter cruise off Nome, and the Beaufort Sea Expedition in 1954. I scanned the list of names in the link, but didn't recognize any names I knew except Capt. Malloney, who was skipper when I was aboard, and I think I remember Jerry Ferrell. She was a great ship and my memories of time aboard her are the best of my Coast Guard service

I thought I posted something some years back- guess not! I served onboard 1-53 to 6-55. SN(RM) thence to RM2 at age 19! Ha! One memorable trip was summer '54 (I think) when we took a Navy sub into the Arctic for under-ice tests, and also did a lot of surveying (along with USS BURTON ISLAND and Canadian icebreaker LABRADOR. We did a lot of the preparations for nuclear sub NAUTILUS transit of the Arctic. On that trip we built a temporary electronic nav. station on Banks Island - erected a Quonset hut and 100' tower, as I recall, done mostly by volunteers working 'round-the- clock for maybe 2 1/2 days. Project leader was a gent named Dr. Waldo K Lyon who was head of Navy's 'NEL' - Navy Eletronic Laboratory - a prestigious organization in those days. Our CO's during my tour were CAPT Richard E. Morrell, a wonderful gent, and CAPT. William 'Wild Bill' Maloney - a different kinda guy, for sure! I learned a lot on that ship - 5 Arctic patrols - stayed in the Coast Guard - OCS in '57 and retired in 1986. Had the privilege of commanding two cutters - CONFIDENCE homeport Kodiak, and CAMPBELL, homeport Port Angeles. I suppose I have more time in the Arctic and North Pacific than most Coasties! Any '53-'55 NORTHWIND sailors still on their feet out there? Regards, Richard 'Dick' Wight

I served on Northwind from 1977 to 1979. What an experience it was for a green 18 year old kid to fall in with a bunch of breaker sailors! I haven't been the same since. In Halifax I made the mistake of trying to outdrink the entire Canadian Navy and woke up with an extremely stupid tattoo. For reason's unknown to me, they called me 'Kamikaze Ozzie.'

She was very special for sure! Riding from Dive school in Pearl Harbor Hi on the Polar Sea to rejoin my mates in Wellington Nz on Deepfreeze 80, the difference was comprable to motel 6 and the Ritz. I couldnt wait to get off the Polar Sea and back to home, the loveable motel 6!! The overall feeling and general attitude between the two did not compare. Northwind brought out the best in all, even under those lesser conditions. I cherish the memory of her and the special personal memories that could not have been gotten elsewhere.

CWO4 Dale Kendrick (who was SKC on NORTHWIND's final deployment) and I got together recently in Surf City, NC for a brief visit. Dale had the original of the crew photo that had been presented to Willmington Mayor Don Betz on January 20, 1989, during NORTHWIND's decommissioing ceremony. Long story how he got it , but it will be presented to the Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington soon.We do not ever intend to allow Wilmington, NC to forget this magnificent ship and the contributions she made to this community. As time marches on, NORTHWIND's spirit means more and more to us all. She was such a stalwart haven for us in the worst environmental conditions on earth. She brought us home from all of that, time and time again, for over 43 years. I'll always treasure her memory; she was a very, very special ship.

I was QM3/QM2 from Sep '75 until May '78, when I was piped over the side (with QM3 Terry Hill leading the sideboys - honest, it happened) into OCS in Curtis Bay. I'm the guy who went on annual leave on our way back out of the Great Lakes in April of '78...they put the gangway over for me while we were transiting the Massena Locks in the St. Lawrence Seaway. We were on water hours, no laundry permitted until Baltimore, I had no clean skivvies and I didn't feel like hand-washing any more, and I had lotsa leave, so I figured, why not? Lt. Dick White signed off on it. Anyone know the whereabouts of Terry Hill, Stan Gwizdak (RM2), or Steve Ryan (BM3), and Drew Marsh (QM2) Also looking for photos of those years and cruises. I have great memories.

I just wanted to pay tribute to this site. As part of my husbands Valentines Gift, I've pieced together a piece of history of his father's duties with the USCG and the ship Northwind during the years 1955 - 1959 or 1960. The letters stopped so I could not track anymore. What a journey I've been on though. His father (James Riley Jordan) from Portland, Oregon left many items in GREAT condition. I found a full diary of letters that his mom must have kept and they are all in a safe laminated case now and it will be presented to him for V-Day. I feel like I sailed the seas with you all !! Blessings to you all.

They got really close to its edge and like in slow motion a giant slab of ice started to giveway, they hauled ass back, as the gaint ice wall let go and slid into the water. The waves tosed that little boat dam good, the Northwind also rocked a bit. SPOOK

Life here in Vermont is nice and slow. Great to hear from all the rest of you breaker sailors. Nice to know that there are survivors. I am currently playing on the best over 35 baseball team in the state and haven't slowed too much. Not quite as fun as playing for the Pony Express coed softball team, right Mark. Rock, I am alive and well. I still have that 'Zest' for life but have slowed down some. I see that grey hair on you in the photo (next to your lovely wife). Which brings me to my next question to Capt. Morris. Cap, will you be supplying a special daycare facility with special events for the wives? Maybe provide a special support group for the weekend. I'm afraid they may not understand. Or are we supposed to bring our wives at all? I believe I have some photos of Bob Snyder as the 'Dick-Tater'. If you all remember, Bob received 2nd place to my 1st place finish for the Halloween costume party (AES-82). I do think Bob should have received 1st place because he stuffed his entire 'package' into that Russet. That was very original. I will try to find the pics and scan/post on my web site later this week. And finally, re: Peterson. Pete was Ken.

We can toss a few cold ones back when we get to Shell Island, (oh yeah, count me in). Still need to round up Joey Hildebran, Joe Henderson, Chris Judd, Mark Remy, Jim Myers, Vann Hinton, Bill Camoe, Peterson (the radioman, did he have a first name, other than Pete?), Bob Snyder (but he can't wear his Dictator costume, once was enough), John Aylor (bring your axe or I'll bring one for ya, we're strikin' up the band, CAPT Morris can sing Rocky Top (we wouldn't want it any other way)). As I have said to CAPT Morris in the past, my cruise aboard the Northwind still stands as the greatest experience of my 25+ years so far. Ski! I remember you mentioning those pictures in one of your emails – I saw ‘em for the first time tonight !!! Jeee-zus, that was 22 years ago!!! I can’t tell you how happy those pictures made me feel; for a moment, I was back on the fantail, with my buds, having the time of my life. Remember the time I burned a hole in Peterson’s pants with a butane lighter while we were waiting in the chow line? Remember how I used to climb partway into the wardroom pantry porthole from the weatherdeck and use my long arms to grab as many Nutty Buddy’s from the freezer as I could? I’d pass ‘em out to the ETs, RMs and RDs! The O’s never figured out why they could never seem to keep enough of those things in stock! I saw Roy Snipes’ entry just below – Roy, how you doin? Anybody know the whereabouts of “Buford the Wonder Dog”? What about Capt. Skoad and his Skoad-men? Famous 1-MC announcements: Lou Ribble -- “There is a large and mysterious iceberg off the the port side…” Tom Rybarski: “Reville-Reville-Reville: Drop your co.ks and grab your socks.” Note: Tom ended up polishing the ship’s bell for that one. How appropriate, given that his announcment was basically advising everyone to stop polishing their own bells! I’m halfway thru my MBA program. If all goes as planned, I’ll graduate in May of ’06. Once that’s done, I’ll be making plans to be at the next reunion. You guys – ALL of you – are the greatest! I miss you all, and can’t wait to see you again soon. Tom, thanks again for shaking loose some great memories. I owe you one, bud…

Hey all y'all: I rode Big Red from fall of 76 thru fall 0f 80. The most fun I ever had with a non stop good crew. Remember the party in the armory with jack billings and his striker with the juice we made from the rotten fruit Ralph Perez was throwing overboard. How bout Jethro Burden riding the wrecker down the ice-way in McMurdo. Any one see Keith (Butch ) Prater YN2 or Young ensign Jerry Amend, Mike Kushla, Joe Daniels or Doug Pierce/Bob Haas. I have a farm in Maine. Icelandic sheep and lots of baled hay, no boats. Joe Wubbold (Wubbolds wobble but they don't fall down) is alive and well on an island off Washington state, Jack Wilson DF 76 is in the preppy sports clothing sales division in Connecticut and Skip Page QM 2 is close by. Great to hear of you guys. Looking for the whereabouts of Ops Boss Dick White DF 76. Best wishes to all. Great job on the web site to Jack Howe. RM2?

A thought crossed my mind. Though this was some years ago (5-6) In Pensecola Air muesumn was the Hanger section from the Northwind of the various patrols. I know everyone rmembers how each Avaition group painted a section with the theme of that patrol. I rounded a corner and almost fell out seeing it in the muesum. It was part of a Coats Guard Avaition exhibit. Justthought I would mention it. Later

I sailed on the Northwind between '75 and '77 ....... For a number of years I've been thinking of going back to visit these great places. I just found a terrific deal on cruises to the Arctic and Antarctica. Celebrity Cruises has a polar class Russian icebreaker on a 13 day cruise to the Arctic (on 9/4) and 11 day cruises to Antarctica (on 10/25 and 11/6). I've shopped prices and these cruises look like a great deal. Since the cruises take place soon it looks like Celebrity is offering last minute deals. The price is roughly $5,000 per person (includes all food, drinks, excursions, etc.). Similar cruises with other companies go for about twice that amout. The icebreaker has zodiacs for exploring and even two helicopters that take passengers out to view the area. I got this information from Celebrity's website (www.celebrity.com). I called the number they show (866-973-8466) to get the price information. Anyway, I'm seriously considering taking one of these cruises and thought I'd pass the information on to those of you who may be interested too.

And how about that extra week of libo in Wellington due to an emergency yard period... we took a 53 degree roll coming back from the ice. Pounding seas had us taking on water in the paint locker. Hand to hand bucket brigade with Doc Rippert handing out little (airplane) bottles of booze. Good times and fond memories.

It's A Small World January 2001 found my wife Joyce and myself in an RV park at Kingman, AZ. This was our first year of trying the full time living in a 34 ft. 5th wheel and traveling about the country, mostly this year in the South West. I had been retired from the Coast Guard since 1979 and had tried my hand at running a charter boat out of the Columbia river for the first couple of years and then came 6 month's of running a jet boat out of Laughlin, NV. 50 miles down river to Lake Havasue and back on a daily basis. This was all great fun until May rolled around and you could fry an egg on the aluminum boat and then it was time to leave. I then worked for the next 14 years as the Boatswain on the Army Corps of Enginneers Dredge Yaquina. It was after these 14 years that I decided that it was time to completely retire and the consideration to the RV life came into being. During the years after my Coast Guard career I developed High blood pressure for which the doctor prescribed medication. While in Kingman, AZ. I was running low on the medication and we decided to go to Nellis Air Force base outside of Las Vegas and pick up a refill at the pharmacy. It had been some time since I had been at a military installation and the 1st as a civilian in all these years. As a retiree I was treated very well and the process of getting my new refill was going quite well. There were many seats available in the waiting room and my wife and I took a couple several seats away from everyone else there. While sitting there I watched this man walking back and forth in front of us reading some literature on the bulkhead. A few minutes went by and he walked over and sat right next to me. Understand that there was at least eight seats between us and the next person and we were at a US Air Force base. We exchanged hello's and started a short conversation. We talked about why we were there and it was basically the same. He stated that he was retired from the Coast Guard and I informed him that I was also. This seemed to surprise the both of us considering where we were and that two Coasties should run into each other. The real surprise would come shortly. My first duty out of Boot camp in 1958 was the CGC Northwind out of Seattle. It seemed that we talked quite a bit and had not even asked each other our names. Finally my wife leaned over and asked him what his name was. He said Tom Bascio. Instantly I recongnized that name as that of a Seaman I had served with on the Northwind. Before I told him my name I just looked at him and said USCGC Northwind 1958-59. Now if Tom had false teeth he had to have some good stickum to hold them in from the way his jaw dropped! He looked at me and said, 'Who are You'? I told him Gary Hudson and he then recognized my name. Don't think any of us could say after 40+ years we look the same:) We talked some about old times and how strange it was that two Coasties would sit next to each other and at an Air Force base let alone having been stationed together so long ago. Tom lives with his wife Marian in Las Vegas and is retired from the Banking system as a Vice President. He retired from the Coast Guard around the same time as I had. We both exchanged e-mail address and have been in contact but it has been a while.

On the Northwind right out of boot camp 1958-59. Far cry from that recruiting poster I saw in Spokane with the sailor on the bow of this speeding boat with a life ring in his hand. Went South and North trip. Big storm off Wash. OR. going south, spent 2 days with many others on the flight deck next to the engine room exhaust. Engineers replaced the crank shaft while U/W south in one of the mains, cut hole into mess deck from weather deck and all the way down into engine room. Got it back running great. Watching movies on the mess deck and leaning against the cork installation, cock roaches coming and crawling on you. Leaking forward hatch above deck bearthing with a foot of water going back and forth. Crossing equator initiation, weeks worth of garbage inside a canvas tunnel on stb. focsle, us polywogs getting halfway through and from the other end they unleashed a 2-1/2 inch fire hose:) The hair cut (scalping)of the little hair I had that had grown back after boot camp. Did not take my hat off in New Zealand:) One stormy day while sitting on the mess deck the ship was pitching and rolling only as an ice breaker did. We had spegettie that day, no one could eat and it all went into the garbage can outside of scullery. As I watched the ship took a rol l to port and the garbage can somehow came out of its container into the passageway, the ship then piched sharpley forward and the can slid down the deck and hit the combing going into engineers berthing and tipped in. There must have been 2o gallons of spegettie and other crap in it. Felt so sorry for the snipes:) On liberty in Spokane, I used to ride with Larry Phelps in his52 Chev back and forth to Seattle. He had a Corvette engine in her and we made the trip in 4-1/2 hours one night. This was beforefreeways:) Larry is still in Spokane and runs a plumbing shop, still into hot rods, Remember BM3 Larry Haydon. I was stationed with him two more times at Point Adams and Cape D. during my career. He retired a Master Chief, lives in Creston, WN, has been the Mayor there for years and also drives school bus. Remember RD Whimpy Terwilliger, he retired from the CG and then worked for years with the State of Oregon ending up retired as thier Director of Boating Safety, Brookshire I hear was or is an autorney in Spokane:) Remember sitting in the VP alongside the ship after unloading a bunch of indians in Alaska to have their teeth worked on, (Right) We had 2 Public Health Dentists on board and they had a bet who could pull the most teeth! The Indians would go in through the mess deck to sick bay, be in there a few minutes, come out the focsle door and spit blood over the side and it would run down the white hull, with the diesel smoke and sloppy seas I just about lost it. Remember one time while bringing a VP on board the ship was rolling and several of us were manning the lines. The crane had her at deck level and she started to bang against the ship. Someone yelled make it fast and the stern line was secured around a deck cleat. The ship rolled to port and the VP went out minus the Sampson post the stern line was attatched to. We finally got it secured. Larry Haydon was bringing the VP alongside and got hit in the head with the crane ball. Never saw a man go down so fast, thought it killed him. A second later he was up shaking his head. The docs took him to sick bay and checked him out, couldn't believe his head wasnt crushed, maybe that where he got the nickname (Bullit Head:) I remember SN Dikeman, God he was big. Also the best CO and XO anyone could have! Capt. Midling and Cmd. Chiswell. They were good people. The Capt just loved to get all over the new Ensigns. Never forget Valpariso. Remember the list of Off limit places they posted, if you wanted to find someone on Libo thats where you went. Remember SN Chrisman, he thought he was a real ladys man. There was a bunch of us upstairs at one of the houses of ill repute, you know, the ones with the dance floor, bar and resturant and doors all around the dance floor that went into the ladies room. Here comes SN Chisman up the stairs with his buddies, he grabs the first lady he can, (the one that had just had a very close encounter with one of us) and gave her a big lip lock:) UGH! It was really a good crew and a fun ship with so many stories but I was glad to finally get a set of orders to shoreside. I am really sorry to hear about the scraping of the lady. If anyone remembers me please drop me a line at my e-mail . Hope I havent taken up too much room here or bored any of you. Seapup59@aol.com

I served on 'Northwind' 1978-79. Used to be known as that crazy DC3 that did voice impressions -- presidents, cartoons, actors. I participated in Arctic West 78 with DC3 Roger Lowery and ET3 John Deega and remember DC3 Greg Shepard later. I remember the time Greg and Roger duct taped up my rack. I still have that great picture of them flipping off the camera and pretending to be asleep. lol Greg use to say he had 'Flintstone feet' and Roger used to run around the boat with a broom singing 'Rock-sand, turn on the red light' all the time. lol We used to do a radio show form the ET Shack underway to supplement the 16mm movies on the mess decks. After many life's adventures, college, various careers and scuba diving trips around the world, I ended up back in the military as a Navy Journalist and went around the world again. I practically had to start over, but now I'm about to retire and start another career. I live on the water on Grand Island near Niagara Falls-Buffalo, NY. Also support the USCG AUX here. Please send me contact info on yourself and on any other former crew who may be interested in attending a reunion in the Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach area two years hence. I was on the Northwind for the 1964 patrol. When we were tied up in Juneau some of us went thru the old gold mines above town. We had to sneak past the watchman to get in the old mine shafts. When we were in Kodiak I got three days leave to go home to Anchorage, told the XO I couldnot afford to go home from Seattle but I could from Kodiak. Had a good time on patrol saw Polar Bears, helped get the tusks from a dead wallrus. I think we got the John A McDonald (Canadian icebreaker) unstuck a couple of times. We went ashore on St. Lawrence island and got chased by Sea Lions on the beach. Went ashore at Barrow, also one of the Dew Line stations that we were breaking ice for the supply ships out of the Makenzie River for. Saw smoke from the coal fires on Banks Island, wrote a story for the ships paper, stating that they were realy the whale factories of the north. Lived in Alaska all my life but could not prove that I had been above the Arctic Circle, so I had to go through the initiation with everyone else. Had a good time when we were in Dutch Harbor also. Can't remember any names, but I say hi to all the ice pirates on the 64 patrol. By for now.
