read his citation for the Coast Guard Medal. He received this for the rescue later featured in 'The
Perfect Storm' (he was on the Tamaroa). It is posted on the Coast Guard web site:
http://www.uscg.mil/history/awards/CGMedal_Citations_G_J.html
According to others that served with Mark that night - contrary to Hollywood and modern myth, the
CO of the Tamaroa did not order the cargo nets to be deployed over the side of the vessel as
depicted in the Movie. In real life this was Mark's idea and it resulted in the Tamaroa being able
to save 4 lives.

of Mark Gibbons. If you have stories to share his family and I would be very interested to hear from

Mark Paul Gibbons, 52, of 3534 Hodges Road, Scranton, died early Saturday [Dec. 1, 2007] at his
home after a battle with cancer. Born in Lawrence, Kansas, August 15, 1955, he was the son of
Kenneth Gibbons and Judith Gibbons who both survive. He retired from the United States Coast
Guard as a Boatswains Mate First Class and was the recipient of the Extraordinary Heroism Medal
and Award presented for heroic service while serving on the Coast Guard Cutter Tamaroa off the
coast of Gloucester, Mass. After retiring from the service, he worked with the N. C. Department
of Transportation for ten years at the Swan Quarter yard. He participated in the men’s league
recreation program in Belhaven during the summer seasons. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
Monday at Bryan Funeral Service. The Reverend Mark Morgan, Pastor of Swan Quarter Baptist Church
will officiate. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery. Surviving are his father,
Kenneth Gibbons of Frederick, Maryland; his mother, Judith Gibbons of McLean, Virginia; three
sisters, Patty Walsh of Frisco, Colorado, Susan Cohen of Centennial, Colorado and Judy Biltcliffe
of Oakdale, Connecticut. (The Coastland Times - Tuesday, December 4, 2007; pg. 10A)

said: Hello, Martin Brumley here, I was a Deck Ape on the Morg from 01/1985 to 02/1987. What a
great place to read about the Morg. Underway, then underway some more. Never ending ALPATs. Some
fun ports of call, Panama, Hawaii. Kodiak, AK, an LTJG ready to kill a local for bad mouthing the
Guard. Ran into some of Morg crew along the way: Ben Brown. Captain/Admiral Bunch deceased, buried
in Arlington National Cemetary- deserving as any American could be. He was a great guy and loved
liberty as much as the rest of us. The names on this (Fred's Place) list are fascinating: One name
that is not is Master Chief Horsley. For those that don't know, he drove a landing craft in the
Pacific theater, WWII. His last station was the Morg in 1986. Buried at Sea from the Morg.
CDR. Desiderio, a great XO and a breath of fresh air after 'CDR Dick Clark, Dick Clark before he
Dick's you'. Chummy Wharton, what else can you say. Some drunk sailor throwing the Quarter Deck
Decorations over the side. Forgeting what you saw during Cadet Cruise. Mixing it up with the jar
heads in Adak. Some excellent rescues, really saving people who would have died otherwise. The
Navy refer docks in Alameda while CG Island docks were built. The Rusty Pelican. Master Chief
Horsley pissing of the QMC to no avail by putting a coffeee pot on the bridge. Best wishes to
all.

25th Aniversary of the wall. It was a fantastic day.If any of you were there and we just didn't
recognize each other, I'm tvery sorry, but time sure does weather us and we certainly don't look as
we were. I'm told the next big parade for the Nam Veterans will be in about five years. Hope I can
make it. There were about 76 Coasties in the parade and a few along the sidelines who couldn't march
in the parade but wanted to be there. If any of you know about that group that attends funerals with
all the lousy signs like how God hates solders, well they have a right to do it, but you would of
been proud of us and others who gave them our opinion of them with one hand. Tomorrow will be the
wreath laying at 'The Wall' .

dogs wut ever sailed the briney deep on the cutter Morgenthau.
I hopes yor' all alive and floating on an even keel in fair weather wherever ya' throwed out yor'
anchors in this life. I were but a deckie in me day '72-'73, but me Morgenthau adventures left me
with priceless treasures of memories and lessons learned that will be fresh forever. I sees some
of me old mates names scrawled down here in yor' Fred's Place Log (Ahoy Fred, thanks) along with
tales o' the high seas an' liberties wut would over flow a 5gal. bucket full o' steam. I ain't
sayin' it's scuttlebutt though. It billowed me sails eyeballin' all ya' dogs lore same as I
recollect it from them ol' days o' yore. I reckon we made 2 knots at best down from the Arctic
Circle, through the Straights of Belle Isle and back to New York haulin' that broke down
Icebreaker(thanks Navy maroons). Do ya' recollect the All Hands To The Fantail trying to heave to
on that tallow smeared 10 inch towing hauser, the line stretched tight as a drum on the windless
as the heavy seas effortlessly and erratically whipped it's greasy sinew port and starboard then
back again riding the aft rail while all hands did the slip and slide we all fall down? All hands
learned the lesson of the power of Mom, how to look completely ridiculous in a dangerous storm and
just how silly it is for grown men to think they can actually haul in a multi ton icebreaker by
hand in that same storm. How 'bout the broke loose helo net in 40-50ft. seas. We'll just go out
and trice that back up. right. Instead we're out there grabbin' the rail outside the mess deck in
a horizontal manner(better hold yor' breath) while the North Atlantic invites us all down to R and
R at Davey Jones Locker! That was one bad ass storm! Something 'bout the fun stuff I'm sure we all
got to do and some still do from time to time in the U.S.Coast Guard certainly makes a dog feel
alive and lucky to still be. Here's who I remember from those days. Email me or float me out a
letter on the next mail bouy so I can grapple it as it sails by if you remember me. Bob Phoenix,
Kurt Rommerdahl, Hal Gantt, Mr. Morales(forced me to buy 3 raffle tickets when I was the
laundryman and I won the wrist watch and the tape deck). Bobby Littlefield(witty ET dude) best
friend Ed Denault, Bob Gooding(adventures in Yonkers), Epperson, Rebaitti(watch your step) Eggy
Toledo, Jesse Acosta,Huestis, Mr. Crye. Anybody I forgot but remembers me, remind me. As for me,
I left the Morgenthau one day and transferred to Montauk Lifeboat Station and enjoyed more fun and
games on 40's and44's before reason set it and I went home to resume my career as a musician(Our
trip to Haiti on the Morg'(the Poppa Doc tour) and the Voodoo show a few of us attended is the
subject of one of my songs, but you'll have to buy the CD to hear that one! Long life and smooth
sailing to all Coast Guard folks wut sail the 7seas or don't and even if you are just a bad ass
boot camp D.I. white tornado McCauley. See ya' in the next one!

Got out in 1984 and joined the Reserves. Retired in December 2004 as a LCDR. Lots of good times
and not so good times being so far from home. Great Crew, not so great command. Does anyone
remember when CDR Clark (XO) was backed into a corner as all the boarding teams quit because of the
busting of an ST3 to STSN for taking a tiny can of coke from a Japanese crewman? Anyone remember
his famous line from that event? I believe it was: 'Some people could consider this mutiny.....'
A crowning moment for the crew. Especially since one crewmember coined the phrase: 'Just when I

are a few sailings out of San Francisco, which is Morganthau's home port now (It would be nice to

served on seven different cutters. One of the cutters was the USCGC MORGENTHAU (WHEC 277) and I am
one of her 'Plank Owners.' The MORGENTHAU was the finest ship I ever served on with the best crew,
officers and men, I ever served with. One could tell from day one that this ship was going to be
special. Her crew was highly motivated, hard working and took great pride in the ship. It seem that
every mission, task or effort, large or small, was an all hand's evolution. Communication and
cooperation between the various department were extraordinary. The ship had such a solid, steady,
dependable group of officers' one would have to believed they had been hand picked from only the
very cream of the Coast Guard's officer corps. One officer I particularly admired and respected, as
did all the CPO's, was our Executive Officer, Commander Wise -- there are simply no better men than
he. The MORGENTHAU had the finest group of chief petty officers I was ever privilaged to serve with
-- QMCS Blackmond, EMC Shorter, ENC Howell, DCC Hebert, ENC Neely, GMC Hazard, BMC Barker, YNC
Conger, RMC Warbutton, RDC Wilkens, ETC Forte, SKC Aquirre and RMC Breslin -- good men all and great
shipmates. However, the lions share of the credit for making the MORGENTHAU such a great ship goes
to her first skipper, Captain JAMES HECTOR McDONALD -- an OFFICER, a GENTLEMAN and a FRIEND -- a
man with exceptional leadership skills. HIS demeanor, HIS energy, HIS attention to duty and HIS
pride in the MORGENTHAU permeated the ship and inspired every man onboard to emulate him -- their
highly esteemed Captain.

situation, to tell you the truth, I really had it pretty good, not because of the ship, because of
my company. Rudder, Ed, Wylie, Frank, Burst, Glassman, Halperin, Turner (Becky-type), Headly, Nate
were all wonderful people to live with and I want to come in contact with each and every one of you.
I found Balls' the other day, Robert I mean. He told me about the site and now I am so excited to
actually have a link to all of you that I cant stand it. Please email me as soon as possible I am
dying to hear from you all...Chuck...I have been hunting for your address for quite some time buddy,
I miss you all very much. My life is going well. I graduate with my logistics degree in 17 days
and celebrated my 5 year anniversary in Sept. I landed a job as an Internet Broker at the nations
largest refrigerated trucking company. Robin is in Hygiene school in the Fall and we are looking to
start entering the world of real-estate ventures, we hope. No kids, not yet, shes got the itch
though. Please message me back asap...I look forward to talking to you all....Andrew

brought me many days of pleasure and pain, but she also brought me many good friends along the way.
I sailed on her (87-89) then again (96-99)either before fram or after she was the best white ship to
float. I can only remember the great memories that I have had on her. To the present crew, keep her
good, she will keep you safe.

just wanted to jump overboard. Wanted to push the ' PICK ' overboard many, many times. When I first
reported I hung out with some of the deck guys. I remember running from the base police when our
guys got in a fight with some Sherman guys at the base club!! We kick their butts!! I remember Ed
and I seeing the SK2 or 3 from the Sherman the next day and seeing him all black and blue. Seems
like you could get away with alot more back then. Remember the trip over to the Gulf? I'll never
forget Australia, DOOR TO THE LEFT BOB DOOR TO THE LEFT!!! and Jerry shouting a DINGO's GOT BEKKI on
the quarterdeck, when I came across the brow that morning. Oh yeah, I'll never forget India. Sorry
I almost got you in trouble Jerry. I remember almost missing movement in Kodiak because the ship
got recalled and I didn't ah, hear the phone?!!?! I have some great memories!!! I'd love to hear
from anyone who remembers me. Hi Nelson!!!

more drinking. I am glad that I finally saw the light before I killed myself. Am retired and have
been since 93. Living in Portsmouth VA. Still sober and enjoying life even though my health isn't
the best but the good Lord isn't through with me yet. Best wishes to those of you who remember/know

time. Well I went to MK A school from Feb-Jun 86. I left from Panama. What a night! Don't go out
drinking if you have to fly in a P-3 for 20 hours the next day. I saw some names I remembered.
Japan was fun in 88. Wear comfortable walking shoes if you go. I just wish that I could have made
it into the Red Dog. The one time we pulled into Juneau, it was closed. I am on the Bear now for

sentence aboard the Morgue ran from 3JAN93-5MAY95. I went as a boot, left as a BM3, and learned
more about the Coast Guard than at any unit since. Good and BAD. It's a white needle of death,
therefore it's also a love boat and a prison. Sustachek picked me up from the airport! I've seen a
few familiar names on this board. I don't know if it's good or bad, but for all of the politics and
bad things that I saw, NONE of that has changed in the Coast Guard since. We got screwed in
Mazatlan by getting recalled! And pulled 3 straight ALPATS. Guatemala???? You've got to be
kidding me, what a hole. But anytime you can go out with the crew and make Kodiak bearable, then
that says a lot! Hey Chief Marsters, I remember when you were Dave. You didn't bother me.

left the Guard. If my memory serves me right I served on her from 79-81. Came on as a SK2 and left
as a SK1. I was also a boarding officer. One of my favorite memories was on ALPAT and the CO
decided to pull into a quite cove and ferry everyone to the beach for a BBQ. Except as we pull in
there are 2 Tawanese vessels that we subsequently seized. I happened to be on the boarding party so
I didn't get to attend the BBQ. Spent about 24 hours aboard the seized vessels. Anyway for my 8
years in the Guard, being on the Morgenthau would have to be the best tour. I really miss the
Guard!!

our time in San Diego for training. Being from San Diego it was like I never left home. From picking
her up in Seattle (with plastic still on the new mattresses), through 'The Portland Rose Festival'
where we were ordered 'What happened in Portland stays on the ship', to her first Alaskan patrol out
of FRAM. We accomplished an unbelievable amount in the less than two years I was there. We made a
major drug bust (I still have the picture), Pulled people from a sailboat in the middle of a sunami,
and we did it as a team. I'm the proud godfather of the daughter of my best friend, Marcus Biaza,
who I met on the Morg. I'm proud to have been associated with the Morg and everybody I was stationed
with on her. I left her as an SK3 after striking for ten months. I changed rates and am now an
AMT2.
