what characters...Alaska Jack, his FTG coveralls & parrot, hitting the islands searching for glass
balls, failed walrus tusk recovery, Nome midpat, Savoonga stopover for ivory carvings, whalebone
that had to go back on next ship, new XO (Trainor) who helped kill one of the diesels while steaming
home...along with multiple initiations...holy mackerel! All that in less than 3 months. Guess I
should mention the 150 fishery boardings. Busy trip. Best Regards to the crew!

still alive who remembers 'Crash' Cunningham. Still with Charlie Golf after all this time? Good for
you!
I finally made BM3 and was discharged from Air Station/Detroit in August, of 1971. I recently
retired as the Fire Chief of Ypsilanti Township, Michigan and now live peacefully on a lake in
the Irish Hills - south of Ann Arbor.

operator.

said: I was on the Pre-Com detail, Ford I., Pearl, then two years of OSV, getting ready for
Market-Time, and they took most of the trained crew off, and sent the ship to Viet Nam with our
successors. Figure that out. C.O. R. P. Cunningham should have stayed with helos. But his
successor Ottis Abney was a fine gentleman, and a great ship handler. I wnet from SLJO to head of
the Deck Dept. Special Sea detail in the gun control turret was awesome, especially shen transiting
the Panama Canal. The ship was built with some interesting flaws that led to our starting to come
apart on OSV during a typhoon... many cracks in the air castle aluminum. Hawaii was a great home
port... nice to come home to. I'm still working for the Coast Guard under contract. Will it ever
end?

ended up in A Gang. Left in a hurry in 85 to go to MK “A” school. Lucked out that a few of the
guys from the ship happened to be in Yorktown on my grad day, so they were kind enough to all tack
on my crows for me (“gotta make sure they stick”). Twig, Oz, Smitty, Ski, Mike, Andy, Debonis …
Seems that we had quite a cast on board. Read an old message that Bud passed away a couple of years
ago, he and Lisa were on the saner side. If anyone from Engineering is around, drop me a line.

Served under Capts. Cunningham and my all-time favorite, Otis H. Abney. Served with the latter at
San Francisco also. Had the con on OS Victor the night the mystery ship sailed through us when you
couldn't see the deck from the bridge for the fog. The month of filming Tora, Tora, Tora in Pearl
was amazing. Shared the helmsmans bucket during the rush to Johnson Island to evacuate personnel
when storm seas flooded. Enjoyed reading entries of others who made the WestPac to SEAsia. Will
never forget one-man fishing tubs converging on blow-outs to pick up fish when a 5-inch round fell
short of the beach and nights on deck when the sky was filled with flares & tracers. Would enjoy
hearing from old crew mates. No Ka Oi

Alaska Patrol. We deployed 24 hours early for SAR of an Indian vessel (Chandra Gupta) that abandoned

I seem to remember Capt Jack Cadigan liked his coffee made a day ahead of time, frig'd and then
reheated. We broke down in Kodiak and spent many nights drinking at the EM club. I drank too much
one night (yes, it's true) and slipped on the ice on the walk back to the ship, losing conciousness
for a few moments. Made a few friends and P.O. a few others with my young fresh mouth. I have
some pix of Sand Island and the softball team, but can't find much of life onboard the ship. Will
have to keep looking. Good days, I miss them for sure.

story Allen was telling about how he got his hands on a hot pot pipe with burning embers in it just
as the OOD walked into the berthing area! Allen was also the guy who freaked out when I dressed
Oscar in coveralls and a parka and dropped him off the flying bridge during the mid watch, right in
front of the windows of the bridge. Allen thought I threw the flying bridge watch over, and started
to freak out. I loved that guy, I will post his picture, once I get it scanned. It definately tells

was my call sign back then. I was the tall skinny (not so skinny now) Radarman with a camera most
of the time. Went scuba diving with MK Martin, BM Mosely, MST White, ET Falcone, GM Clegg, ET
Lewark & several others. Some of my best times on the ole Boat (besides getting off) was Kisska
Island and the dry dock in Hono when we had Tropical Routine, 7am to 1pm. During that dry dock ET
Cox and GM Clegg and I rented a real neat apt 3 blks from Waikiki Beach and had parties on the roof
every night for the 1st 2 weeks. Some of you guys managed to make some of those parties. Thanks
for the great times & memories guys. Reading all these msg's makes me wish I could turn the clock
back 26 years and do it again. Since I have signed onto Fred's Place, I have talked to 2 shipmates
for the 1st time since I left the Boat, 26 years ago. I hope to talk to several more in the days to
come. Also, I live in Houston, Tx now, if any of you are driving across the country, look me up.
We have plenty of room to put you up for the night and a big ole bbq pit to grill up some great Tx
Que. Before I sign off, I regret to inform you the GM Clegg passed away in 1998 with a rare blood
disorder the Dr's could not treat. He stayed in the CG until he retired in 1996 or early 1997. His

said: The film that I had in mind was 'Tora, Tora, Tora.' The Mellon was at Pearl Harbor for
repairs (prior to her deployment to Viet Nam) while the December 7th attack was being re-enacted for
the movie. She was tied-up between several destroyers - just east of the entrance to the harbor -
during the filming. The special effects crew placed a dingy full of burning tires in the water to
obscure her lily-white fantail from the cameras. However, if you look very carefully during the
dive bomber sequences, you can see her fantail - with a single sailor standing on the fantail
looking aft. That sailor was me! Because there was only a skeleton crew aboard, I (the BMOW) was
assigned to the fantail with a charged 1-1/2 inch line to make sure these guys didn't burn our
fantail off. (Note: She's much more visible in the Director's version of the film.)

initial training and vast consumption of Primo beer, before flying to Louisiana to take her to sea

the installation of her weapon systems. Then we sailed through the Panama Canel to Sand Island,
Hawaii - with stops in Galveston, Long Beach and San Francisco along the way. I was aboard her for
her first 2 years - which included her first 3 ocean station 'Victors' - while striking for
Boatswain's Mate. Just prior to her deployment to Viet Nam, I tranferred to Barber's Point Air
Station in the SW corner of Oahu, Hawaii. I understand that she was decommissioned, refitted and
recommissioned, and is now stationed in Seattle? That's a long way from the warm waters off Sand
Island. In 1967, SA Tim Sroop gave her the motto 'No Ka Oi' - meaning 'the best of all'. I am
confident that all of you have made sure that she remains 'No Ka Oi'. On

finished the job on our bridge wing mooring outboard of us at Ford Island. Next day CAPT Olsen
didn’t want to wait for the tugs to get Prebble, he used our engines and bow thruster (my special

do another 180 to head for the fuel pier and another 180 (in what seemed like about 400’ of room)

couple of trips together. That magazine explosion made it really hard to aligne the 5'38.Understand
that the problem has gone away with the new forward weapon.I think that the first Alaskan patrol for
the Mellon was a real kick, even though I had several beiring sea patrols before that one,I'll always
remember going into Juneau with Hawiian music playing the snow coming down and the girls in full
alaskan garb on the dock. Also the night that the whale struck the ship and FT Umland pulled to GQ
alarm,(still shell shocked from the magazine explosion)Anyway,if any of you want to talk about old
