What a ship, what a time, what a crew. OK, so I was only TAD RM1 for one ALPAT in 78, but what characters...Alaska Jack, his FTG coveralls & parrot, hitting the islands searching for glass balls, failed walrus tusk recovery, Nome midpat, Savoonga stopover for ivory carvings, whalebone that had to go back on next ship, new XO (Trainor) who helped kill one of the diesels while steaming home...along with multiple initiations...holy mackerel! All that in less than 3 months. Guess I should mention the 150 fishery boardings. Busy trip. Best Regards to the crew!

Mr. Allen - Nice to hear from you after all these years. I thought I was the only person still alive who remembers 'Crash' Cunningham. Still with Charlie Golf after all this time? Good for you! I finally made BM3 and was discharged from Air Station/Detroit in August, of 1971. I recently retired as the Fire Chief of Ypsilanti Township, Michigan and now live peacefully on a lake in the Irish Hills - south of Ann Arbor. (Former) SN Tom Yurkunas ... Pre-Com Detail and the Mellon's first fire control director operator.

I was on the Pre-Com detail, Ford I., Pearl, then two years of OSV, getting ready for Market-Time, and they took most of the trained crew off, and sent the ship to Viet Nam with our successors. Figure that out. C.O. R. P. Cunningham should have stayed with helos. But his successor Ottis Abney was a fine gentleman, and a great ship handler. I wnet from SLJO to head of the Deck Dept. Special Sea detail in the gun control turret was awesome, especially shen transiting the Panama Canal. The ship was built with some interesting flaws that led to our starting to come apart on OSV during a typhoon... many cracks in the air castle aluminum. Hawaii was a great home port... nice to come home to. I'm still working for the Coast Guard under contract. Will it ever end?

I was on the Mellon as an FN from 83-85, straight out of boot camp. Lucked out and ended up in A Gang. Left in a hurry in 85 to go to MK “A” school. Lucked out that a few of the guys from the ship happened to be in Yorktown on my grad day, so they were kind enough to all tack on my crows for me (“gotta make sure they stick”). Twig, Oz, Smitty, Ski, Mike, Andy, Debonis … Seems that we had quite a cast on board. Read an old message that Bud passed away a couple of years ago, he and Lisa were on the saner side. If anyone from Engineering is around, drop me a line.

I decomissioned the Cambell WHEC 32 (The Queen) in 81-82 or so and became a Mellon head with several other guys that were transfered together from the Queen. I got off Mellon In 1985 as a main prop snipe FA before FRAM. My most memorable moment was when I put that big lum ox crazyTony Rogers down and out with one punch in the seamens berthing area at the Portland rose festival. Yea he was snoring like a big baby! Sorry about the 9 stiches in the lip Tony, Im a nicer guy now (really I am!) Im not here to brag about my days of thunder but rather to find my sea daddy CWO Seale and say thanks for all you did to get me an honorable discharge after my little bout of other trouble that I would rather not discuss. It means a lot to me. Hope your ok Thanks Ozzy

Ens/Ltjg (Communications) 1/69-7/70 - What a treat to see names I remember from the crew. Served under Capts. Cunningham and my all-time favorite, Otis H. Abney. Served with the latter at San Francisco also. Had the con on OS Victor the night the mystery ship sailed through us when you couldn't see the deck from the bridge for the fog. The month of filming Tora, Tora, Tora in Pearl was amazing. Shared the helmsmans bucket during the rush to Johnson Island to evacuate personnel when storm seas flooded. Enjoyed reading entries of others who made the WestPac to SEAsia. Will never forget one-man fishing tubs converging on blow-outs to pick up fish when a 5-inch round fell short of the beach and nights on deck when the sky was filled with flares & tracers. Would enjoy hearing from old crew mates. No Ka Oi

Stationed on Mellon from Nov 77 to approx May 78 when ET A school billet came in. Made on Alaska Patrol. We deployed 24 hours early for SAR of an Indian vessel (Chandra Gupta) that abandoned ship in +50' seas. Found nothing but an empty raft that we couldn't retrieve - 'remember the raft'. I seem to remember Capt Jack Cadigan liked his coffee made a day ahead of time, frig'd and then reheated. We broke down in Kodiak and spent many nights drinking at the EM club. I drank too much one night (yes, it's true) and slipped on the ice on the walk back to the ship, losing conciousness for a few moments. Made a few friends and P.O. a few others with my young fresh mouth. I have some pix of Sand Island and the softball team, but can't find much of life onboard the ship. Will have to keep looking. Good days, I miss them for sure.

Served aboard the Mellon in 89 after she came out of FRAM. I can't remember how many times we had to paint her. We had fun with the welders as the did there work. Didn't do it, no one saw me do it, can't prove a thing. Got her ready for operational status. Saw the CIWIS shoot, but left for RM School when she was going for the Harpoon shoot then to Alaska for an ALPAT. Janie Ross was a good friend as was Leo Olmeda. Obsession begins with an 'O' as in Olmeda was his motto. Had a good time. The BMC was great. Saw the ship again when I was stationed in Hawaii in 91/92. Looked better than when I left her. Don't miss Seattle though. They can keep the rain. Give me the dry heat of Southern California any day.

o/b Mellon 77-79 ........ Ya know Brian Fleming I do think I remember SN Allen now that you mentioned him. Wasn't he the guy that came up on the Bridge one evening demanding to Speak to the Capt about something ? I thought he was kidding at first. But the Capt told a Chief to take him below and explain some CG protocall to him. I don't know what ever happened to him after that.

Anyone remember SN Allen during the 1978 era? Mike Czuprinski and I were at his Captain's Mast for smoking dope. It was the most hilarious time I think I ever had. Mike and I kept getting comments from Captain Jack about our laughing. Finally the Captain even starting laughing at the BS story Allen was telling about how he got his hands on a hot pot pipe with burning embers in it just as the OOD walked into the berthing area! Allen was also the guy who freaked out when I dressed Oscar in coveralls and a parka and dropped him off the flying bridge during the mid watch, right in front of the windows of the bridge. Allen thought I threw the flying bridge watch over, and started to freak out. I loved that guy, I will post his picture, once I get it scanned. It definately tells a thousand words! Looking forward to putting together a reunion.

Just signed onto Fred's Place 8/15. Served on Mellon July77 thru July 79. RD2 Howard was my call sign back then. I was the tall skinny (not so skinny now) Radarman with a camera most of the time. Went scuba diving with MK Martin, BM Mosely, MST White, ET Falcone, GM Clegg, ET Lewark & several others. Some of my best times on the ole Boat (besides getting off) was Kisska Island and the dry dock in Hono when we had Tropical Routine, 7am to 1pm. During that dry dock ET Cox and GM Clegg and I rented a real neat apt 3 blks from Waikiki Beach and had parties on the roof every night for the 1st 2 weeks. Some of you guys managed to make some of those parties. Thanks for the great times & memories guys. Reading all these msg's makes me wish I could turn the clock back 26 years and do it again. Since I have signed onto Fred's Place, I have talked to 2 shipmates for the 1st time since I left the Boat, 26 years ago. I hope to talk to several more in the days to come. Also, I live in Houston, Tx now, if any of you are driving across the country, look me up. We have plenty of room to put you up for the night and a big ole bbq pit to grill up some great Tx Que. Before I sign off, I regret to inform you the GM Clegg passed away in 1998 with a rare blood disorder the Dr's could not treat. He stayed in the CG until he retired in 1996 or early 1997. His last duty station was here in Houston, at the recrutors office.

The film that I had in mind was 'Tora, Tora, Tora.' The Mellon was at Pearl Harbor for repairs (prior to her deployment to Viet Nam) while the December 7th attack was being re-enacted for the movie. She was tied-up between several destroyers - just east of the entrance to the harbor - during the filming. The special effects crew placed a dingy full of burning tires in the water to obscure her lily-white fantail from the cameras. However, if you look very carefully during the dive bomber sequences, you can see her fantail - with a single sailor standing on the fantail looking aft. That sailor was me! Because there was only a skeleton crew aboard, I (the BMOW) was assigned to the fantail with a charged 1-1/2 inch line to make sure these guys didn't burn our fantail off. (Note: She's much more visible in the Director's version of the film.)

Not sure what movie the Mellon appeared in 1970, but the Mellon was in the Disney Movie 'The Last Voyage Of Noah's Ark' in 1979. As an SA fresh out of Cape May, I was assigned to the Mellon even before she was commissioned. The original crew (pre-com detail) of the Mellon mustered in Pearl Harbor for initial training and vast consumption of Primo beer, before flying to Louisiana to take her to sea for the first time. We sailed east to Baltimore to have some additional work completed - including the installation of her weapon systems. Then we sailed through the Panama Canel to Sand Island, Hawaii - with stops in Galveston, Long Beach and San Francisco along the way. I was aboard her for her first 2 years - which included her first 3 ocean station 'Victors' - while striking for Boatswain's Mate. Just prior to her deployment to Viet Nam, I tranferred to Barber's Point Air Station in the SW corner of Oahu, Hawaii. I understand that she was decommissioned, refitted and recommissioned, and is now stationed in Seattle? That's a long way from the warm waters off Sand Island. In 1967, SA Tim Sroop gave her the motto 'No Ka Oi' - meaning 'the best of all'. I am confident that all of you have made sure that she remains 'No Ka Oi'.

Served in MELLON 1995-1997 as Engineer Officer. Most demanding job I've ever had in the USCG. Fortunately for me, I sailed with some of the finest engineers around: Ted England, Frank Perniola, Mark Smith, Corie Carpenter, Pat Nelson, Brian Reamer, Felix Delgado, DC2 Medrano, DJ Erickson, Dan Workenhour, Todd Cornell, and MK3 McHugh - just to name a few. I worked for two of the finest officers that I have ever served with: Steve Bellona (CO) and Mark Miller (XO). We had a fabulous HIPAT, with pristine fuel at Kwajalein. Other than that, it was ALPAT, ALPATS and ALPATS. We routinely operated in DODAG, which was frowned on by the rest of the fleet, because they couldn't do it as effectively. 23 KTS!! on half the fuel of BMGTs. Hello to shipmates Gwen Theole and Chris Coleman, congrats on the hitch! Dave Carmody in 1975?! - Same guy that I was stationed with at Kure, no doubt. Regards, MPL

Been 6 years since I checked in with Freds Place. Sailed with the Mellon from 78 to 80. Home port in Honolulu as served as a MST. 2 reftras, 2 alpats. 1 walt disney movie, 2 captains(cadigan,o'brien), 1 dry dock, Mellon lites softball team and made many good friends..Tim White, Dave Macedo, Dave Hodkinson, Jay Shivley, Paul Munn, Mike Adams, Paul Doughrty, Fontaine, Sturdivant, Sharon martin, Sherich, Hotsinpiller, JD, Benitez, BM3 ? and many more shipmates of names I can't recollect. I'll never forget my experience on the Mellon. What a blast! Remember when White and I got abandoned on St. Paul island for 2 weeks. Remember when we came into Kodiak with only 1 turbine and we crashed into the dock during a snowstorm. Remember when we lost all of our oceanographic gear over the side when the cable snapped! How about the torpedo that disapeared or the time we lost hydraulics in the 5 inch gun and almost shot our bow off......a few good stories! I am living in Alaska and retiring from Dept. of Fish and Game this summer. Have one 13 year old daughter and divorced. Living the good life in Alaska. Love it. Can anyone else remember any good mellon stories?

Served on the CGC Mellon from Aug. 74 to Sept. 76. I was a DC3. I remember well playing cat and mouse with the Russian fishing fleet in the Bearing Sea, the USS Coral Sea incident and the USS Primble ramming into us(lost my camara overboard when she hit us) I was also there in the Adak NCO club when the fight broke out with the Navy boys and we comendered a Navy bus back to the docks- the old man was po'd with that one- pulling the whale boat off the beach at Kiska. Thought I was going to freeze standing in chest deep freezing water; but the brandy was pretty tasty when we got back on board. I don't remember the island name but we dug up old ww2 Jap rifles and tried to sneak a few on board only to have to toss them over when caught. Rescuing the Sorcery, Towing the Polar Star back home, the laundry room fire while at the Kodiak fuel docks, freezing our butts off during helio ops on Alpat, partying in the port 10 man, broom hockey on the flight deck, giving Stinky from the aft 30 man a shower party and hanging out at the tower on the beach on Sand Island drinking brew. I wouldn't trade those days for nothing. If you know me or not feel free to drop me a line.

I remember 1975! Getting tossed around on the helo deck taking WX obs during the Sorcery rescue (with half the deck force in the balloon shelter holding the line to my gunners belt), I was the guy who got Maced by that SASP on the liberty bus in Adak because he panicked and pointed the can the wrong way. “Captain Crunch” on the Prebble not only rammed us in towing drills but also finished the job on our bridge wing mooring outboard of us at Ford Island. Next day CAPT Olsen didn’t want to wait for the tugs to get Prebble, he used our engines and bow thruster (my special sea detail billet) to move us sideways from the pier, do a 180 and release Prebble to go outbound, do another 180 to head for the fuel pier and another 180 (in what seemed like about 400’ of room) and sideways again to tie up. The Navy linehandlers at the fuel pier were just standing there stunned at what Olsen could do. Good duty until the next REFTRA. I got off when she went into drydock in Seattle.
