Ensign ,,1957-9 out of OCS - had weekend duty on MAD drydocked at CGYard, Baltimore. Girl friend from New London came down unexpectedly , at same time IRMA the BODY showed up for lunch. QM's rented out binoculars, positioned at drydock floor. We three sat in wardroom, temperature dropped 20 deg. while i tried to make conversation. Got QM to call a fire drill and escort women off ship. Base requires all visitors off base (instant reg for safety) (mine) Sent Irma back to Gaety Theatre, QM brought NL girl to radio shack where duty officer was hiding. EN3 'country' Wiggens later reported the crew had taken a poll ..and 'we approved the one you kept'

I served on the Madrona for three months. I came to her after my first unit USCGC Redwood. I was glad to have read that Madrona serves over in Sri Lanka now. I can remember when we where getting out of Hurricane Floyds path. EM2 Maddy ask if I would be his spotter while he secured eletric outlet to the bow light. So we ended up to the bow. And as soon as Maddy finished and secured the outlet. This big wave comes over the bow and we both get drenched. I really enjoyed working on buoys while on the Madrona and Redwood. Hopefully one day we can see our old ships again. At least we got the stories to tell. Anybody I served with on the Redwood, Madrona, Northland, and Polar Sea. Drop me a line.
