I am Subsistance Specialist Third Class Butler, Served aboard the Mighty Mack between 1974 to
August of 1977. Does anyone remember when she was involved in the collision Starboard Side while
breaking Ice. That was an event to remember. The time in dry dock and when we finially got back
underway. Anyway I had just stumbled on to this site and had to give my hello's. For those that
get around I can be found in Des Moines, Iowa. I want to thank my shipmates for those Orders at
the grill and for the opportunity for the underway midrats.

Hogan, EM1 Frenzel, Bruce Graves, Guy Detrick, and Van Houten. KC, I was a cook striker under Tom
Batten on the Absecon, WAVP 374. He was a good cook then too. Was happy to see him on the Mack. Was
a SS3 when I left the Mack in '76. I remeber the night the Fitz went down, Snoopy's, It snowing in
the Gold Front, and the XO Crazy Daisy hating my guts lol. I remember when The Southwind was
decommisioned and a detail was sent to the graveyard to pull the South Hampton racks out of her. 1
of them had my name scratched into the metal from when I pulled 3 straight tours on her. I was on
the Westwind too. All y'all take care.

said: I made a typing error to information previously provided this date. After serving on
the Mac in 73-74, I transferred to the Acacia, where I served for one year, and discharged in
06/1975 vice 1974 as reflected. Just a few more memories....I participated in the Jul 1973 Purple
Heart cruise to Chicago, and recall having aboard Buddy Rich, and of course the lovely play boy
bunnies as part of the entertainment (good PR). While aboard the Mac, and Acacia, I was able to be
a crew member (twice) during the annual Port Huron to Mackinaw boat race...performing our search and
rescue mission, in addition to other routine duties of boey tending, and ice breaking. I recall
that during 73 or 74 shipping was kept open year round in the Great Lakes. The Cutters were kept
busy this year breaking ice, and freeing ships that were stuck in the ice. It is my understanding
the year round endeavor was not continued. In 1975, I traveled on the Acacia through the St.
Lawrece Seaway, taking her to the ship yards in Curtis Bay, MD for renovation. This was a great,
and memorable trip. My 4 year enlistment was completed in 06/1975, 3 weeks after this trip began.
It was like a vacation trip, except for the hard work performed while at the ship yard. The Acacia
was replaced in Port Huron, MI, thereafter by the UDCG Bramble (also renovated), formerly docked in
Detroit, MI. It's amazing how many memories are stored over the years....and its a good thing,
because we'll probably need them later.

daughter's. It sure brings back memories, most of which were good. It is great reading the
comments made my the numerous 'fellow USCG personnel'....past, and present. I served on the Mighty
Mac from 07/1973 to 06/1974 as an SS3 (cook rating), and transferred to USCG Cutter Acacia, Port
Huron, MI, where I promoted to SS2, and discharged in 06/1974 after 4 years of service. I
thereafter completed college in the field of criminal justice, and recently retired on 3 May 2007 as
a federal investigator with 30 years of service that included my USCG time. I continue to live in
Michigan, about 7 miles from the MSU campus located in E. Lansing, MI. Some of the names that I
readily reconized from Mac years include Jim Bye, Bill Gannon, Orval Bower, definitely Marty Jardon
who last responded to the site in 2001, the names Jim Priest, and Mike Irwin seem to be surface as a
past acquaintance. The CO, while I served aboard the Mac was Capt. Bruce. My CO aboard the Acacia
during 74-75 was LCDR Mosher. If I tricker any memories, hope to here from you. I'll frequently
check this site to 'meet 'old' shipmates'.

some of the most memorable and treasued years of my life. Randy Boileau, Tom 'Beetle' Bailey, Bob
Ebenhoe, Eric Harper, and Trey Lawton are all still great friends and we still see each other at
least once a year. I'll always remember hanging out with RM Stan Johnson in the radio room next to
the Captains mess when I was cooking for Capt Hall. Stan passed away a few years back. A few of us
did make it to the reunion in '04. It was great to see Capt. Hall again. On my way back from

said: Seeing as how the Mac and Acacia were decommissioned the same week...thought some of you
might be interested in helping preserve the USCGC ACACIA as a museum...here is some info on how to
help.
On June 30th, 2006, the Coast Guard transferred the USCGC Acacia (WLB 406), last of the 180's, to
the American Academy of Industry to be opened as a museum in Chicago, IL. AAI is a not-for-
profit group and agreed to take the Acacia over when the City of Chicago committed to provide a
permanent berth for the cutter within a few weeks of the transfer.
As the City's time frame remained open-ended, AAI has been reluctant to publicize anything to
date; conscious to not tell vets something that we were not in control of and thus, not in a
position to guarantee we could deliver. However, the City's schedule has continued to slip and at
our last meeting, the City suggested delays as late as next spring. This delay will jeopardize
the project's success and effectively puts AAI in the position of 1) possibly going 10 months
without an operating income for the Acacia, and 2) needing to start lay up of the cutter for
winter.
The A-Boat is in incredible shape and an absolute tribute to the Coast Guard, every AtoN sailor,
and the 180's as a whole. She will be a great museum, but we're going to have to make it through
this winter. If you are interested in knowing how you can help, please contact Dan Hecker at
708-425-8443 or dh483@aol.com.

Kudos to Commander McGuiness. I met him last summer when he spent time discussing the ship...and

than a captain of a ship...passing on taking any credit for his achievements and passing them on to

well done with many color photos. Glad I traveled from Florida to Cheboygan for the ceremony.!

Museum Group Raises Funds Sets goal of $1 million by July 1 for first phase of plan to display the
cutter 1/20 - Cheboygan - A committee seeking to turn the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Mackinaw into a
museum after it is de-commissioned is implementing plans for a major fund-raising campaign. The
Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum, Inc., a group with a 501(C)3 non-profit status, is attempting
to raise $1 million by July 1 to fund various initial phases of a project to secure a site, get
permits and excavate in preparation for moving the giant icebreaker into a permanent well for
display. “We're in the process of sending out letters to some people who we think can help,” said
Joanne Harrison, the group's treasurer. Visits to solicit funds from the Chicago Yacht Club, the
Detroit Yacht Club, the Lake Carriers Association, and various local service clubs have been planned
as well as talks with area banks for financing the project. “We've developed two brochures, one for
yearly membership and another called ‘Moor the Mackinaw' for corporate donors,” Harrison explained.
“Locally, we have scheduled or already presented programs for the Business and Professional Women,
Cheboygan Jaycees, the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club and the Straits Area Builders Association. We hope
to solicit these groups as well as individuals and their businesses.” She added that an effort will
soon begin to solicit pledges. A campaign to canvass alumni who served on the ship has produced most
of the revenue so far, approximately $50,000 in contributions and pledges. The group voted
unanimously in November to have United Design Associates, Inc., begin the process of securing
permits from the Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a job
that could take up to two years to complete. Board members also voted unanimously to retain the
services of Kathryn McKee, an independent fund-raiser from Chicago, Ill., who operates Business
Development for the Arts and was hired to seek eligible grants for the group to pursue. Harrison
admitted that the group still does not have a written business proposal to take to potential
financiers. “Our business plan is almost finished,” she noted. “We'll need that to approach the
banking industry. The process of securing funds has begun.” Donors who get in on the first wave
of contributions will be named as “plankowners” of the project, the name given to crewmen who
initially man a new ship. Their names will be listed on a plaque aboard the ship, Harrison said. The
financial effort is designed to bolster the group's presence before a March meeting with the
Cheboygan County Commissioners, who raised organizational concerns at a November meeting and balked
at a plan to accept the ship in June after it is decommissioned. The matter was tabled until the
scheduled March review of the plan. Also waiting for action is Sam Fralick, who owns the property
north of the Cheboygan County Marina known as “the Point” where the museum group hopes to display
the giant icebreaker. A first right of refusal document written with former group Chairman Jim
Stevens to secure the property expired Dec. 31, 2005. “I bought that land with my business partner
George Schryer in 1966 from the Olds estate,” Fralick said Thursday. “We always thought it would
make a nice spot for a restaurant or some condominiums. George's daughters Linda Konicki and Lisa
Trost became the other partners in 1989 through his estate when he died in 1989. I partnered with
him in business dealings for 23 years.” The property was listed for sale at $1.1 million dollars
in 2003, but Fralick said he has discussed a price “in the $795,000 range” with the museum
committee. He recently sold property north of the Northwood Oil Company tanks. Fralick said he also
owns property south of that location known as the Coal Dock, the Mackinaw's original home, running
along the west side of the Cheboygan River from First Street to Durocher's tugboat slips. He has
offered that location, currently unused, to berth the Mackinaw until the Point location can be
readied for the vessel. “We want the Mackinaw here,” Fralick said. “It's going to be a real
tourist attraction. It's the ‘Queen of the Great Lakes.' But now we have nothing on paper. They need
to put together a written proposal, that's what they'll need to take to the banks.” Fralick
indicated that the document is one detail - short of an actual purchase offer - he'd like to see in
place to guarantee the ship's final home. “We don't want them to wait on this,” he emphasized.
“There are some wetlands there and they could specify any DEQ conditions they want as part of the
deal.” “That's part of our problem,” Harrison sighed. “We need to make sure that land is going to
be usable before we do much else.” She said an appraisal of the property is planned in the near
future. Fralick admitted he is frustrated by the slowness of the process, and said he feels the city
of Cheboygan should help to encourage the deal by aiding organization of the project. “The city
should be putting some action into this. This project isn't even on anybody's list of priorities,”
he said, referring to City Manager Scott McNeil's recent review of 2005 city priorities. From the

said: This letter appeared in Travis City Eagle-Record June 22. Let 'Mac' stay home. When I
heard the icebreaker Mackinaw might become a tourist attraction on Mackinac Island I didn't know
whether to laugh or cry. The Mighty Mac as just another tourist attraction with a tour guide who
didn't know her? I think I'll just cry. If anyone gets custody of the Mackinaw it should be the
city of Cheboygan. She is not just a ship to the people in Cheboygan, she is part of the city and a
friend. When you say 'Mac' in that town, every one knows what you're talking about. Mackinac Island
is a tourist trap and if the Mac went there it would be just another 'thing to be seen on the
island.' To the people of Cheboygan she is part of their history, considered almost family. Many
men stationed on the Mac married women from Cheboygan and have made Cheboygan their home. The Mac
needs Cheboygan as much as Cheboygan needs the Mac. People who live on the lakes have always known
when winter has come to stay when they saw the Mac (also known as the 'great white mother') breaking
ice. My husband, Floyd, was stationed on the Mac and she was always his favorite ship. Mackinaw
reunions bought people from all over the United States to Cheboygan, because serving on the Mac was
such a special memory for everyone. Several years ago the Coast Guard had three ice breaking tugs
built in Tacoma, Wash., so the Mac wouldn't have to be used. They were thinking of getting rid of
her even then ('70s). If I have my numbers correct the Mac had to be called out at least four times
that winter to help the tugs. She was built for the lakes only. I hope the powers that be will let
the Mac stay home - in Cheboygan. Esther Stormer San Pedro, Calif.

Remember 'Mackinaws' first 'REFTRA' in Cleveland that particularly 'Balmy' January? I recall 'When

'Mackinaw' was always know for being the only 'White Hulled' ice breaking pig in the coast guard.

met Don Gautier(my favorite bar tender at the Consolidated Club). I left the Coast Guard as a DC1

hello to any of my former shipmates who may be reading.. I was on the ship same time you were, fall
1970- fall 1972 as a cook. . I remember Quakenbush but I don't know what happened to anyone. Just
went back on board last week at the coast guard festival. The present cook took me in to see the
galley. They have 3 times the galley and feed half the crew. Seem like a different ship. Women are
even stationed on her. Lots of reworks done since that dusty summer we spent in the Chicago yards
right across from the coal pile. Brought back lots of memories. I was in Cheboygan last week. The
Goldfront is still there and the park downtown, but tourism has hit and you wouldn't hardly
recognize the place otherwise. Appears I missed a reunion. Now that I know about Fred's place
pehaps I'll make the next one.

snipe from the Mackinaw. What is he doing now? Go to Cheboyganfair.com, click on the attractions
and scroll down to the clown in the purple hat. Yea, thats him! Still with grease on his face, but
doing good after all he has been through. Now my question is, do all snipes become clowns after
retiring or are they clowns before they retire? Chuckles? Jeff? etc...

I'll never forget the first time in the shower with him. One of the other new guys says 'what's
that'. We all look and Hudak has a tatoo of a devil shoveling coal up his ass. Some welcome wouldn't
you say.

Dave Anderson. I believe we 3 all reported to the Mac at the same time. I seem to remember a very
long ride up from Detroit in a Ford Staion Wgn. . They called it a bus. When we got to Cheboygan the
ship was out. We had to spend the night in this old rundowm room over a tavern. What a welcome. Dave
I still have a picture of you and I by our bunks I didn't stay to long though. I ended up going to
EN. School. I did use 'green death' and red lead and god forbid you got a run in any of this stuff.
