Someone mentioned the Seven Mile Bridge yesterday and it reminded me of Willy Soto when he said 'Damn, that Seven Mile Bridge must be ten miles long!'. We kept a book of Willisms, the best was when he was OOD and asked the quarterdeck watch what time the 7:45 reports were held. After realizing Willy was serious, the watchstander said 'about a quarter to eight or so.'

What about the four weeks (er I mean months) we spent in Savannah? and the Nudie Bar that *shock* burned down after the party, or the other nudie bar with photos of the old man and that freaky old lady pulling her shirt up… those photos that magically showed up on the mess deck? I Ended up working at the same base with ..ahem that particular QM, anyone remember *that* significant emotional event? Give you a hint it involved the Duvall county sheriff.. Or them Fenn’s dog Benson went to work with out him in JAX. The poor guy nearly had a heart attack. Or the Savannah yards with “pumphouse” and the skaggy security guard, or the meathead ensign (you know who he is) that kept climbing the gate and yet… never got in trouble, we do it one and it is to the end of the long green table? As I am Learjet pilot now and am all over the place I make the point of always doing a drive by when I am in the area of all the old haunts the never change.. …the adml benbow, the shipyards (anyone else feel that we should return the cutterman’s pin and get a drydock pin instead.) Hell the entire back half of Sigsbee Park is gone, there is always some winnabloato parked where my old house was all the retired military guys…camping… hey wait I am a retired military guy).. Oh I do miss it… (ok not really) regards MDG

Many, many memories are written by old shipmates. I see that some have gone on and done very well, while others of us are still enjoying the many new sea stories that develop with ever patrol. I can't say that many can compare with my tour in Main Prop (83 - 85) and the crew we had at the time. I have been to Key West many times since I left both PCS and mid-patrol breaks, but I still look at the pier where we moored and think about the old times. Keep up the memories and I really enjoyed the pictures.

Hey Shipmates. Can you believe it's been twenty years since the 'Booze Cruise'? Randy Stake here. I reported aboard in the yards in Jax, and departed from the yards in Savanah. Thanks again for not giving me the traditional toss over the side while we were drydocked! It sure is a blast from the past reading these posts. Brings back a lot of mostly fond memories. I still keep in touch with Karl Reinecke and Don Hill. You Snipes will appreciate this: Apparently, i'm still 'Boring the shit' out of old Donnie. Speaking of Snipes, how are you guys? Jim Schonely, Hutch, Jeff, Wally, Ernie and the rest. I've seen Bob Taft, Dan Brown, 'Junior' Samples, and Lloyd Pierce in Key West. Lloyd is still in the CG. Great to read posts from Brad Cohen, Mike Platt, Iaciofano, Perez and other deckies... Anyone hear from 'Vick the Dick' Johnson, 'Cornbread' Hicks, Kitzmiller, LeBlanc, or 'Ollie' Olivari ? I live near Key West. It has changed a bit, (very crowded now) but the weather is still great... between hurricanes. If any of you guys find youselves down here, look me up. I'm the only Stake in the book. I just finished scanning a bunch of 'Grandpa' Reinecke's photos. (You'll get your albums back Karl.) check them out here: http://www.geocities.com/cgclipan/cgclipan.html

Hello all Lipan was my first ship out of boot camp. Hard to believe it’s been almost twenty years. I was there for the dry dock in Savannah GA. ( I was the drunk one at the Hilton river walk drinking Michelob Dark). Was there the morning the Fox burned down. To this day I can not hear “Magic Carpet ride” with out thinking of the Fox and the Dancers coming around asking for change to play a song on the juke box so they could dance. Any one know the where about of Mike Highly aka the “manatee”? I was on the ship when the navy towed her away. The last night was fun till the base OD came over and told us to quit jumping from the bridge wing. I left KW for EM school and am making EMCS next year. I still tell sea stories about the LIPAN. Any old shipmate out there drop me a line.

Porter, last I heard from Bob Taft he was FSC about to start his third or fourth tour as an admiral's cook. He may be retired now, and if he is I wouldn't be surprised if he went back to Key West. I'd live in the lower or middle keys, not necessarily Key West itself, if there was any way I could afford it. I still have some planks left, if anyone didn't get one or wants another one. Only this time I don't have the Coast Guard to pay the postage so anyone that wants one will have to pay about four bucks.

greetings to all who sailed her from 81-85. Lloyd, I do not remember anything about that incident. (Obviously, but I do remember several of the power cruises at the Gator Den) I do remember several others like, being on the Alex a day out of Key West when the News Helo was going to do a flyby. So the Navy Cruiser Escort decides to put two missles on the forward launchers. The Alex crew thought we were going to kill them and sink the ship. or the time in good old aft Steering when Capt Monty wanted a rudder drill, so we pulled the rudder king pin and waited for the Conn to to start yelling. They made no rudder changes for @ 15 minutes until we kicked the rudder and it went hard over. They sure were yelling then.

Hey John Rhodes remember swinging out over the Caribbean on a signal halyard while I laughed? Bob Taylor remember leaving Miami (Gator Den) at our usual special sea detail position? Dave Fields says 'After steering - conn we're experiencing a steering casualty' I panic - 'Hey Bob wake up they don't have steering!' Bob says nothing because he's just come from a power cruise at Gator Den and is out cold! 'After steering - conn CO is on his way back to see what's going on (as we're adrift in the channel).' 'Conn after steering I think we have it fixed now (as Bob snores a little louder).' Dave recognizes the rouge and points out the ON/OFF switch which I quickly throw to save having to sit in front of 'the maximum's the minimum' Montenese. Oh Sorry Bob of course you don't remember you never woke UP!!! Speaking of Keebler - who remembers the night he used one of his 9 lives by coming back from the bar and relieving himself on Rick Campbell who was sound asleep in the bottom rack? I better stop since I still have some of a career left to tend. Hey where's Bruce? Chris you want to weigh in on that modified restriction thing??? I'm in for Hearts!

So far options are donate them to the Tamaroa to raffle/give to donors/sell; donate them to the National Association of Fleet Tug Sailors; donate them to the webmaster of the USS LIPAN website (if he wants them) to distribute amongst squidvets; give them to UTEVets (remember that the salvor that gave these to CDR Yarbrough probably also gave a box to someone from the UTE). What do you think? Deadline for replies is 1 June.

Cruising through the net and found this site. What a blast. I was a plank owner -- went aboard as an RM3 and managed to get off two years later, still an RM3. Not the best part of my life. I remember great times in Key West, though; Scott Rosa -- remember when I saved your life and you made me an honorary Samoan. I read Joe Halpin's response to Fritzy and I can see you, Fritz, with your arm in a cast still handling lines. I used to see Steve Gordy up til the mid-80s, same for Bruce Barnes. Hung out with Neil Strong from Georgia in NY when he was going to GM school and I'd been promoted to Civilian. CO was Cmdr Montanese, XO LCDR Breedlove, Ops Boss was Herb Adams, Bob Fellrath was Engineering Officer, LT Ditto was my boss. Ah the memories. The Cuban Guerilla boat was the Captain Jack -- it had no weapons, and they hit our port side with their outrigger, blew out a spotlight, scraped a huge hole in the superstrucutre, and knocked off a liferaft, which inflated and they got in it figuring that we had sent it for them. I was on a boarding party and had to board the boat, and then chase down the liferaft in our avon. Hello to Kenny Pratt, Joe Neudecker, Fritzy, and anyone else who was aboard from 1980 to November of 1982.

I am a 'plank owner' from the recommissioning crew as CGC Lipan in February 1981. I reported as an SA, made SN and left for aviation 'A' school in March '82. Left active duty in August '84 but joined the Reserves.I changed rates to BM primarily because of my Lipan experience. I'm now a BMC. I'm married, 2 kids (boy 5, girl 3) working as a the Administrative Director over a large outpatient center in the Texas Medical Center, Houston TX.CGC Lipan has alot of memories for all of us. Sea Stories: Remember the 'Cuban Commandos' we intecepted at night and the damage to the port side of the ship? How about the mid-patrol break in Gitmo? I still have my license plate souvenir.Hope to hear from other 'plank owners'. Mr. Zimmerman, CWO are you out there?

To all my old shipmates, and all who sailed on her. She was a slow but reliable ship. Spent most of my life in the engine room on her (Tucker thanks for teaching me), sweating a plenty. I do remember we made a lot of busts. I still have my Ballyhoo Bob shirt. To all of you shipmates fair winds and following sea's.

Not my first Ship and not my last, but surely one of my most memorable. From March of 83 to Nov 85, I spent many hours in the engine room and then on the town. Lots of memories and names of friends, both past and present keep appearing at this table... Lots of luck to you all.

I was a QM3 on the Lipan from 81-83. My fondest memory was being stationed in the Conch Republic. I've never been back since but I still carry my Key West library card in my wallet. I loved it during spring break and especially on halloween when Fantasy-Feast would parade down Duvall St. and transform that place into freak city (freakier than usual). Another favorite memory of mine was the time a certain MK3 tossed the old-mans Lipan license plate into the drink and all ship board activity ceased for the day until under water recovery was made by my hero, BM3 Keebler.

Hi, I was in the coast guard from 1981 to 1985, I went to the Priest with Red Robes in the fall of 81 right out of boot camp. Some of the fellows were talking about the Grand Camen cruise. I wasn't aloud to take the cruise because of this J.O. BM who wanted to take the cruise so he stayed on in my place. Wish I could remember his name. CDR Montenese was the old man at this time. I have some great stories about SR Alwine going to the flying bridge in his underware so the rich boy could get put off the ship. 1 port and a court martial later he was gone. X.O. - CDR Breedlove, if your out there sir - last thing I heard, he was a CO in Akaska and I have an Aplogy for him. Remember an incident that happened during a cruise. We were underway for quite some time I remember- past 3 weeks at least I think. The oldman was prone to do this when I was on. Equipment would break and we would keep sailing and not return to port. Well the story I have is about the evaporators. They went down and couldn't be fixed. Soooo we went on water rations. I went to do my wash that night in the laundry starboard side aft. Boy I couldn't figure out why the water was off until GM Palfrey walked by and asked what was I doing. I told him and he laughed. (I was so young at the time, new on the ship and amazed at everything). He retold me about the water rationing, and then explained what it ment. I had turned on some valves that were not working prior to Palfrey walking by. Since there was no water coming out of them I assume that I just left them open thinking they were closed. The next day at quarters CDR Breedlove while addressing the crew referenced an act of sabotage. Stating that someone tried to sink or flood the ship last night. He further stated that just because the potable water was lower now we still were not going to go back to port because of the this incicdent. I WAS APPALLED to think that some one would have done something like this. I was truly that stupid at the time sir. It was years latter when thinking about who it might have done that haines act that I relized it was me. It's alot late, but I'm sorry. I certainly wasn't one of the ones that wanted to go back to port, If you remember I was a lifer from my first day. So If you ever thought about it as mush as I have. I hope I cleared up a few things.

It's good to run into old shipmates. Still have my Ballyhoo Bob's Booze Cruise shirt. Remembering Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Haiti, Bahamas, PR...and in between we did some work. Remember the XMAS of 82 when we made 4 busts in 60 hours. Had 2 kids, a ton of fun, and made a bunch of good friends. Dave Field I spent too many hours trying to burn that new leaf you turned over!!! Went from SNQM to QM1 on that old pig. Now I'm about to make QMCM and I'm not sure I'm dried out from that tour yet!!! Shipmates memories of that ship are some of the best of my career! Anybody remember the ALEX? Busted that old tub and she brought me home to meet my oldest son. Hey Dave remember Cayman Sunset's (the drink)? Hoisted a few of them...especially after we all talked to my wife who had just delivered my youngest son! I could go on all day...good to see you old shipmates.
