in Rockland, we were then outfitted for oceanagraphic duty in Wash. DC, we made a couple of trips to
Bermuda, we were on the submersible vehicle 'Alvin' salvage off of Bermuda, then we sailed to
Barbados, making stops along the way, Virgin Islands, Peurto Rico, as well as many more places
before reaching Barbados. We were at Barbados for quite some time, I was in the engineroom with 130
degree heat, I went thru a lot of salt tablets, after Barbados we ended up at Atlantic Beach, North
Carolina, we were on the SAR call for the Thordus Prestis, a Norwegian Freighter that was on fire,
we were on that call for a couple of weeks. I was on the motor lifeboat for most of those two weeks,
shuttling crews back and forth and supplies. After settling in at Atlantic Beach, I put in for duty
in Nam, but only got part way there, I spent a year on isolated duty, on Sand Island, part of
Johnston Atoll at the LORAN station, then my last 9 months at two small boat stations in Oregon.
Florence and Winchester Bay. I don't regret a thing and would do it all over again.

Remember going out on a resuce call mar 77, 50'swells trying to rescue a fishing boat whose bridge

had just turned 17 and it was my first ship. I was onboard in Ketchikan, AK. and sailed to LA. The
picture I found was when the main motor failed and we drifted off of southern Mexico until a cutter
could come and get us. I think it was at least four days? I remember the sharks circling the boat.
The last time I saw the Laurel she was in St Thomas. It was strange seeing her so far from Alaska

time from the CG Yard at Curtis Bay, MD, through the St. Lawrence and Lakes Erie, Ontario and Huron
to the Great Lakes Center for Marine History at Port Huron, Michigan. This was supposed to happen
two weeks ago but red tape caused the delay and we lost half the crew due to inflexible vacation
schedules. We need Engineers, Deck and Ops. types. Former officers and men alike. The food will be
sumptious and free (I'm the cook). This could be one more great CG experience. The Cutter Laurel
will be moved three weeks later in the exact same fashion. For more information, please contact

during which I served on Laurel, in 1969. She was still out of Rockland, Maine (her REAL home), but
was assigned to the BOMEX (Barbados Oceanographic and Meteorological Experiment [I think]}, so we
spent most of the time between my arrival in Feb of '69 to her entry into the yard in Baltimore in
September '69 in the Carribean, with GS-15 oceanographers and meteorologists aboard from Washington
Navy Yard. (How many of you have transited the Potomac River on LAUREL?) We went to the Carribean
with no A/C, and a black hull - avg temps of 130 were measured in the engine room - many of us slept
on deck. One of my favorite pictures was one taken by the SK on board at the time, SK2(?) Herbert
Norboom (Boomer), of the LAUREL burying her head in a 30 footer off of Bermuda, must have been
August '69? Would interest me to know where Boomer is now. CO was LCDR Walsh (former Corpsman), XO

We had a great crew. Have of fun memories, like Joe kicking a fish w/dress shoes. Love those
spines! And Marc swimming behind the bowling alley!

Captain Gemmell how to drive a 180. (Backing out of Port Hueneme, etc.) Just kidding... figured I'd
check in with the new address.
