Looking for former shipmates of my grandfather's who, I believe served aboard the Ingham during WWII. He was from the Charleston, SC area. His name was John McCay. He was discharged in 46 and his papers were signed by a CDR J.R. Scullion. I know he spent time in PI, as I have pictures of the ship (after it received a newer camouflage paint scheme at the Charleston shipyard..around '45?), along with pictures of the captiol building of Leyte. Other photos include pictures of him w/ shipmates on deck, along with crew baseball pictures. Any info would be great.

Hi Anthony Barrick -- My dad was a Chief Pharmacist's Mate. His name is Earl Brown but everyone called him Bud. I don't know anything about the time that he served in the CG. I have a picture of him with another guy but I don't know who it is. Do you have any knowledge of him through your grandfather's records or any pics of the guys that he served with? If anyone else has any information about the crew on the Ingham in 1945 would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. Lu

For anyone who may be interested, I saw an obituary in the local paper yesterday for William C. Stinson here in Greensboro, NC. He attended 'Ole Miss' before entering the Coast Guard in January 1943 and served aboard the Ingham in the Mediterranean and along the Africian coast, participating in 11 invasions. He left the Coast Guard as a YN3 in April 1946. Here is the link for anyone who may be interested - http://obituaries.news-record.com/obituaries/news-record/obituary.aspx?n=william-c-stinson&pid=134776214.

I was onboard INGHAM from Aug. '75 to Sep. '77 the best riding ship I was ever stationed on. My whole tour was spent in the 'fireroom' as an MK3/MK2. Pulled a few Ocean Station Hotel's with her and two trips to Guantanamo Bay. The first we got 'E's' all around and the second one was 'not so fun'. I am now a retired CWO3 (eng) with memories of 'riding the rag cans' back and forth across in front of the boilers on those 'calm hotel' seas in the north Atlantic and sliding 3 decks down the rails in the access trunk!

Larry, our initiation took place at night on the mess deck, someone snappped a polaroid picture of me, my head covered in oil surfacing from that garbage can with an orange in my mouth in the background is Schulke smoking a cigarette, I still have the picture somewhere, I will try to post it. I'm pretty sure Schulke worked in the Boiler Room with Chico. I remember another night at about 4 am I just got off my 12 to 4 making salt water into potable water in the engine room and was on the fantail having a smoke and Dr. Pepper and PGA and there was a guy swinging an axe trying to bust into the steel door of the Radio Room. Sparks were flying and this guys yelling 'Chamberlains in there we gotta get him out, FIRE!!!' Of course Chamberlain was sound asleep in his rack and there was no fire but this guy also needed a jacket and an airlift the next day. He was a skinny hispanic lookin' guy but I can't remember his name and I never saw him again after that. The good times just kept rolling on the ocean weather patrols!

This one is for Larry Garcia, I think I remember you Larry but do you remember a guy named Randy Schulke? Randy flipped out on our Ocean Weather Patrol in January of 76, he took the glass plates from the mess deck and started throwing them like frisbees and smashing them all over. It took a few guys and a strait-jacket to calm him down. a helicopter came the next day and took him off the ship. I think that was the same night you guys initiated me and 4 other rookies by making us bob for oranges in oil and bilge water. yeah the sea shower didn't quite get all the oil out of my hair that night. Ahh the memories!

I was down in Key West last week and my condo was approx. 500 yds. from the Ingham. The ship is lookin' great and is now docked at the Truman Waterfront right next to the Truman Annex Condos. Special thenks to Project Coordinator Nick Lombardi and Chief Engineer Chip Powell for getting this old coastie into some of the restricted areas (engine room, berthing area under mess deck etc..) that I didn't get to see at Pat's Point. The day I was there they were installing a large roof-top ac unit and hooking it up to the ship's original duct work. It's pretty cool, Nick actually stays on the ship 24/7, he's got a small apartment on board with all the comforts of home. They've got some nice shirts and hat's for sale on board as well. If you're ever down in South Florida you've gotta take a ride down to Key West and check it out, they got her lookin' great and if you did time on the Mighty Ingham these guys will give you a great tour. It is located right next to the entrance to Ft. Zachary Taylor which has a nice beach but as I'm sure you all remember----it was hotter than the hubs of hell down there in August!!! On August 19, the USS Laffey will be moved from Patriots Point to Deyten's Shipyard in North Charleston for repairs to her hull. The maintenance is expected to take three to four months at which time the destroyer will be unavailable for touring. On August 20, the USS Ingham will be transported to Florida where it will stop for repairs before traveling to Key West to join the USS Mohawk CGC Memorial Museum as an addition to their fleet permanently. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but encourage you to visit all of the other attractions at the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum. A fleet of historic ships, including the USS Yorktown and USS Clamagore, as well as the Medal of Honor Museum, Cold War Submarine Memorial and the Vietnam Naval Support Base, the only exhibit of its kind in the United States, provide a first-hand look at life on the front lines.

One week ago on 11/08/2008 I finally made it back aboard the USCGC Ingham. It had been 32 years and 3 months since I left the ship to attend DC school in August of '76. I was a little disappointed in what they had done to the ship. Gone was the teakwood decking, the crew's berthing area was gutted and replaced with display cases and the berthing area below the mess deck was locked-up and off limits as were the engine room and boiler room. I realize that this is done for liability reasons but I left that day feeling I only saw about half of the ship! I also noticed a big difference in the upkeep of the 2 Navy ships compared to the Ingham. It would be nice to see a fresh coat of paint and some wood decking back on that fantail. It was still great to see the ship again after all these years, I was only on the ship for nine months, but during that time we sailed to Baltimore, New London, Bermuda, Boston (rammed the pier!!!), England, Spain and Italy. Visiting the Ingham brought back lots of memories and I'm glad they decided to make it a floating museum and not a man made reef like the Taney and Campbell.

Greetings fellow Inghamites. I served on board the mighty 'I' from '73-'75. I was a motivated fellow when I was onboard.....I spent the entire time as an SA in deckforce. I use to run with some fellows named Sanderlin (Sandy), Rutan, Mitchell and a number of others who's names I can't remember (I'm surprised I remember these). I had a chance to see the old girl in Charleston back in 1997. Wow she sure did look awfully small. It seemed when I was aboard that she was such a large ship (then again I came from a small town in Kansas). For those who might remember I was the one who stole the skipper's 'CO-INGHAM' sign at the dock in Portsmouth. The skipper was Skillings and I heard that he blamed the junior officers on board and made their life hell for a time. I ran into our 1st Lt years later when he was a Captain and he told me about the hell Skillings put the officers through. They had no idea who stole it. I had kept it all those years and gave it to Capt. Harder as a momento. It's amazing how cherished those memories become as we get older.

Doug, I think Norsworthy was a fire control tech, he might have gone to GM school at Governors Island. Chico was unforgetable. They had to use him in Rota Spain to interpret. He was really uncomfortable on the bridge. I remember Ernie and Bill. John Mead brought a whole new meaning to shagging on the Blvd. RM school was still in Petaluma Ca back then. it's still hard for me to believe the RM rating has been discontinued.

Hi Tony, Do you remember a guy named Norsworthy, I think he was an RM on the Ingham, somehow he ended up in Governor's Island with me and Jim Rupert but he wasn't going to DC school. Where was RM school back then? You must remember Chico from the Boiler room and the ship store. Hey, do you remember Paul Paonessa, we called him 'ERNIE' cuz he looked like Ernie from My Three Sons, how about Bill Saliva , we called him SPIT (shocking), and another guy, John Mead, he was the guy with the '66 chevy van with wall to wall shag carpeting that could usually be found parked on Coast Guard Blvd.

Great to hear from you Doug! I remember Todd, Biggio, Dolan and MK3 Ferguson. Boatner was a little before my time. Good times at the EM club, as much as I can remember. I was on the flying bridge when we hit the dock so I got to see the whole incident. I remember thinking this can't be the coast guard!

This one is for Tony Weidman , My name is Doug Smith, I also remember ramming the pier in Boston, I was in the engine room at the time and ended up slamming into the Steam turbo generator when we hit--Ouch!!! They called me Smitty, I was an FA out of boot and I ended up getting orders for DC school as soon as we got back from the '76 Cadet Cruise in August. I ended up in Base Kodiak and had a great time and met some cool people. Your name sounds kinda' familiar, do you remember a guy named A.J. Boatner? I think he was an RM that we used to party with. I used to hang with Jim Rupert, Ralph Todd, Biggio, Tim Dolan Ted Denoth and I remember an old dog , I think his name was Phil but they called Cooder or something. I remember chief Maschinot and those two house trailers on base that were our EM club there is a lot more I could talk about but I'll wait for your response, thanks

Ingham was my first duty station out of Boot. Reported aboard in Feb 1981. Remember a few people, forgotten many more. Those that may not remember I was one of the ones that missed the cadet cruise to Europe. Not a very prous moment in my life and wish I could change that. Had MAST with Capt Siddall, he let me stay in the Guard and booted out Chris Beattie. Many many thanks to the Captain for that. I went on to having a great career, mostly thanks to Capt Siddall, who ironically enough became my CO on the Munro several years later. I didn't know how much of an impact that stupid little stunt would have. I remember many good times on board even though we missed that cruise. Great times in San Juan on our many patrols to the Windward Passage. Unknowingly locking Chief Olds in the paint locker, thinking back now, that was funny, or at least we thought it was. Chief Olds on the other hand..........didn't. We cleaned the hauser locker for days and days after that, and usually during the roughest seas. Just read the entry about the Ingham being in Key West and have jsut seen a photo of her there, she is still absolutely beautiful. I would love to volunteer to help keep her in shape. Many happy memories from deck force. It seemed such a shame when they covered the teak decking with that damn non-skid rubber decking. This just brings back so many memories, too many to put on this site, but it's great to see her back in all her glory and great to see some very familiar names.

Hello fellow Inghamites
I just got back from a weeks stay on board the Ingham in Key West. Did volunteer work and stayed on board for free. Anyone interested in doing that, I suggest you contact Mr Bill Verge from the previous post or you can contact me and I'll put you in contact with them.
I arrived on a Saturday night around 11pm and she was all lit up. At first sight all I could say was oh my god there she is, (it had been 22 years). I'd heard before she was in tough shape, but not any more. To say she looked good is an understatement. She looked incredible. I wish to give great praise and thanks to the people taking good care of her now. She's as white as new fallen snow and no rust anywhere to be seen.
If the force draft blowers were going, I'd would have thought she was ready to get underway. While on board I did some general cleaning in different compartments. Helped out as best I could in identifying different equipment. Shined up the lube oil lines near the red gears, those are visible during the tour. The tours are self guided, but I seemed to always get drawn to some military vets that came onboard and ended up talking about the ship. It was a blast. And the really funny thing! When it was liberty time, I didn't feel like going ashore, it was almost like I wanted to stand duty and just stay onboard, wander the ship and then watch the Key West sun go down from the fantail in a chair with a big cigar. I did that.
I'd recommend it to any of the old Ingham & 327 sailors. There's a great display of pictures of the Ingham through the years in the main berthing area. Very highly recommended. It gave me a new prespective on just how much the ship had done while on active duty in service of our country. I know the Taney's still around and haven't seen her yet and it's to bad the others are gone. They were and are truely one of a kind ships. My hats off to all those who went to sea on those 327's.

I am Bill Verge, Executive Director of the new USCGC INGHAM memorial museum which is located in Key West. INGHAM will be joining USCGC MOHAWK (WPG-78), predecessor to the current MOHAWK also located in Key West. The ship will be located at the old Navy Sub Base in Key West (Google - MOHAWK Key West - also on Google Earth - visual). I am a retired LT, USCGR 1955-1978. INGHAM is currently located at Pier P, CG Sector Charleston and will be dry docked at Detyens in Charleston on 19 October. It has been 20 years since her last dry docking. After repairs and hull painting she will be towed to Key West for visitors to see. We are interested in maintining contact with the veterans for history, photos, memorabilia and of course contributions. E-mail you comments to USSMOHAWK@bellsouth.net or visit our website: USSMOHAWK.org (The USS was Mohawk designation during WWII on Greenland Patrol - USS MOHAWK CGC (WPG-78). Patriot's Point did not do a good job of maintaining the ship and we will rectify that. Any help in our restoration efforts would be greatly appreciated.
