to Patriot's Point for a Cub Scout sleep over. I must say that the condition of the exterior of the
Ingham was disgraceful. I guess the state of South Carolina owns it now, but it was weather beaten
bad. The white paint was cracked and needed stripping and refinishing. The red stripe was pink,
and the black numbers grey. Very disappointing. This ship is a piece of history and for whatever
reason Patriot's Point doesn't seem to be on the ball when it comes to exterior upkeep.

back many memories. I spent 2 wonderful months messcooking for Jimmy and Sonny. I must find my
pictures of the Toga party on the fantail. Some other people I remember, Frank Duffek, FN Peterson,
Stu Franco, EM3 King, Rich Lenakee. Joe Rizzo was my first roomate, then Frank Duffek. Our crew
was very close nit group. Also remember Fat Daddy, Pine Tree. Great Time.

I see the posts from Fenn, Wing, an others that I remember. One major memory that came back over
the last day or two was our biggest athletic achievement. In '84 we were the first floating unit to
place in the top three in the Admiral's Cup Softball Tournament. Now I will really test my memory
since we had some good teams over the three years I played. Correct me if I am wrong. I think I
have the lineup down real close if not right. Pitcher was MK1 'Chico' Rivera, catcher was 'Wild
Eyed' 'Tiny' Gordon, 1b was CDR/XO Bill Bowen, I played 2b, SS EM3 JJ Sullivan, 3b LTJG 'Fast Ed'
Nagle, LF DC3 John Lee, LC MK2 Steve 'Frenchy' Grenier, RC SN Dave Merrill, RF SN Gino Defazio. The
only two I remember coming in off the bench were SS1 Bob Swanson, and GM1 Bob Gross. Then in '85 we
had 'Pudge', SN Dan Hinojosa, and DC3 Jessup. I even have two of our cadets from '85 and '86 who
are both CDRs at Yorktown now. Small world. I just got an email from another shipmate who is
retiring this year, LTJG now Capt. Jim Mazzona. I still keep in touch with a few others these days.
John Lee and Kenny Walker are Warrants. Ed Nagle and Jim Bjostad are both Captains. I saw Dave
Armstrong's post. He was one of the last Gm3s I was on there with. GM1 now GMCS (Retired) Hal
Hoffman works at Yorktown too. I guess it is odd how memories come back, but then again, it was my
best tour. Does anyone know what became of YNC Chuck Tate? Oh well, I am sure that more will come
back to me, but for now, thanks to all Ingamites, even those before or after me, who made her what
she was. Still the most decorated US Warship ever except for the Arizona. I would say we are in
pretty good company. Best wishes to all, and email me if you were there for the '84-'86 time
frame.

84-86. I saw Bill Miller's memory of the container ship sinking. It was 17 men and a cat. Jim
Ferneyhough was Coxs'n, Frenchy Grenier I think was boat engineer, and Gino Defazio was the Seaman.
I was the shipboard swimmer that day. 25 footers with the MSB in the water for 7 hours. I was
there with Bob Gross, Chuck Tate, Bob Vachula, Fast Eddy Kittel?, Nick Oxendine, Kenny Walker, and
on an on. 'Mighty I' was definitely my best tour. I retired in 02 as a GMC. Now I am instructing
young Coasties at Port Security 'A' School in Yorktown. The Guard was too good to me to let go yet.

said: Hi,
Back again to share a few memories. Like operation wagonwheel, and doing a SAR case where we
rescued the survivors from a container ship ( seventeen men and a cat, if I remember correctly)
Like the motor burning out in steering and ramming the fuel pier in Gitmo, then waiting forever
for parts. Rigging a chainfalls to steer enough to move to a regular berth, so we didn't have to
stay tied up to the fuel pier. Then the Navy overfilling the NSFO tank between the main shafts,
bulging the bulkheads and warping the bearing mounts. Limping home putting bags of ice on the
bearing housings to keep them cool.
I learned a lot on that ship. Like how to scrape babbitt bearings to make them fit correctly (
thanks Chief Mendenhall)
I see Frenchy has been here, how about Steve Brodhagg? I can't remember a lot of the names, but
sure can picture the faces.

Commander Bauman had passed away in 2005. I realized how long it had been since coming here and
visiting. There are always alot of great comments about this cutter and its crew. I always find it
interesting that after alot of year in the Army my fondest memories are the two years I spent aboard
this aging white cutter. I have visited the Ingham at Patriots Point on one occasion wirh fond
memories and I must say a little sadness at the deterioration but I realized what a fine service she
had. And such a diverse service as well. Seeing my old bunk brought back alot of memories or books
read, stories told. More than anything in life serving in the Coast Guard has left a life long
impression on me that I hope I never forget. Smooth Sailing to you all.

said: Master Chief Jenning's post regarding the internment of CDR Bade is appreciated. I received
a phone message this morning from YNC Herb Cox that another member of that 74/75 crew has crossed

of the term, and also a truly superb shipmate. He was there in 2002 for the mini-reunion attended by
several of us from that exceptional CPO quarters and, at 70, he was in his usual good spirits and in
apparent good health. We kidded him that he looked better than when we served with him aboard the
Ingham. Farewell Dutch, you will be remembered fondly by those of us who had the good fortune to
serve with you and to have had the distinct pleasure of your company.

and I drove the 2 hour trip North to see my old ship. I was on her as an SA and SN, 1979-1980 before
BM'A' school. Guys, let me tell you something, that was the most moving experience I've had in a
long time. I started off by saluting the ensign as I crossed the brow. I spent over 2 hours going
over every nook and cranny on that ship. I forgot how old that ship was even in 1979. Yea, the
Ingham needed a lot of work, but hey, she did her time and she looked beautiful to me. I guess I
really can't put into words the way I feel about the Ingham and the time I had on her. No one would
be able to understand, except us. I spent so much time just reminising that my dad went on the
Navy ship docked next to the Ingham. As I left her, I gave my final salute, and thanked her for her
service to the country and keeping me safe. As I got on the peer to leave, my dad was still on the
Navy ship and wanted me to go aboard. I couldn't do it!! I told my dad that 'it would've been like
cheating on my wife. (ha ha). I wouldn't dare go aboard another ship in front of the Ingham'. Of
course he just rolled his eyes, but let me tell you, there was some truth to that. Anyway, I just
wanted to share my time with our ship and I suggest that if anyone has the time, you gotta do it.

He was planning to get out of the CG, but they talked him in to going to OCS. Pete was the drummer,

Nagey what a grand leader he was. Was on ocean Station Echo when my first kid was born, My last
three stations were up north, I believe they were Bravo. Charley , and then Bravo again, Remember
one storm tearing off the life jacket locker, also pushing in the front of the 5inch gun mount so we
had to bail water out of the upper handeling room for two trips, also breaking out baseball bats or
whatever to beat the Ice off the bridge and flying bridge because of the heavy rolling and the Capt
was getting very nervous(not the only one I might add). Also on one trip up north we lost a bearing
or maybe a seal on the shaft that turned the screw and they dropped us oil in three 5 gal cans
strapped together, one of the drops got away from us, the way that chute was flying it still may be
going. Also the same trip we were under tow going into the Navy dock in Argenita and were pushed
into the stern of a navy ship. The Ingham came out much better than the ship we hit as I remember,
I nearly broke my neck as I was on our bow with head phones on and took off running when I knew we
were going to collide. Would be good to hear from any of the guys from 60 to 62, thats only 45

Gephardt. I wonder what happened to him, too. Also, in 90-91, I sailed with a JG who was a former QM
on INGHAM named Craig Petersen. I think he was on Mighty-I around 84-85. Anyway, I don’t really have
any stories to add to those written by the folks from my time. I remembered most of the events
mentioned; a few I had totally forgotten about. Oh, as for the condition of the ship now: I lived in
Charleston from 2002-04, and made it across the river to Mt. Pleasant to see the “Old Lady” a few
times. As everyone else has reported, she was in bad shape. I don’t know if anything changed since
then. But enough about that. I just found out about next month’s reunion, and hope I can make it (I
live in Norfolk…again! Ugh!). If I make it, I hope to see all of you there. Lots of great stories to
swap! On08/26/06 Mark Miller

as a subsistence specialist. I remember the times when the seas were rough and most of the crew was
not able to keep their breakfast down. At lunchtime, only a portion of the crew would line up in the
messdeck for chow. It was very challenging trying to cook in extreme weather conditions using
antiquated equipment! But, I still think about all the adventures, ports of call, and the good times
we encountered underway. E-mail me if you were a crewmember during this time or have any additional

XO. Best tour of my 20 year career! I was transferred about a year before her decommisioning and I
went back to attend that ceremony with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. She went to
Patriot's Point Museum looking like a yacht and I understand they have not done right by the old
girl. It was tough keeping her running at the end(when she reached 50 years old and was the most
decorated AND the oldest ship on continuous active duty). Her bullnose was painted gold by the
youngest and the oldest member of the crew then in 1986 to recognize that dubious acheivement. Who
remembers making runs to Baltimore to swap bad steam valves for slightly better ones from Taney? I
found 12 decommisioning files with dates going way back into the 1970s. When we hauled her at her
last yard availability (although we didn't know that at the time) in spring 85 or 86 we found rivet
heads and hull plating almost gone because someone actually believed the last decom order and didn't
renew all the hull zincs at the previous haulout!! We spent over $5 million to replace anbout 5% of
the bottom plating and to ringweld hundreds of rivet heads. The CO and I vowed to do whatever it
took to maintain her even if we got another decommisioning order to add to the 12 that never
happened. That's why she looked so good in 1988! Lots of adventures---drug patrols; repatriating
about 500 Haitians; a couple of cadet cruises with some great Carribbean port calls; a crewmember
suffering lung collapse from a diving accident when on R and R in Grand Cayman where I spent the
whole 2 day port call arranging to get him from the chamber to FL via CGAir (at 500 ft low level
flight across Cuba (which was tough to arrange but we did it. That fellow recovered fully and
actually went on to dive school if I remember correctly); rescuing a sailboat in trouble off the
Virginia coast after a 95 footer had to turn around because it was too rough for them; watching a
Navy Master Chief Bosun choke on his cigar at GTMO when he saw the picture of the U-boat with the
red X on it under the marijuana leaves with the red Xs on them ( we got a bit more respect at Navy
bases after we painted that on the bridge wing to account for the German sub Ingham sunk during bthe
early years of WWII; hearing about the Challenger disaster while docked in Curacao; Chico getting
transferred from the boiler room to the Group at Hampton Roads and we horsetraded for him to get him
back (he didn't know much about diesels and whoever we got to replace him didn't know anything about
steam so it was a good swap) and many more too numerous to mention. A ship is only as good as her
crew and Ingham was a great ship because she had a great crew!! I have the honor of having one of
those laser-etched marble drawings of her, charging through the sea, hanging in my home to remember
her by. I hope my old shipmates are well and remember Ingham as fondly as I remember her.

and left at Gov. Island in 1988. The EO, LT John Overton, was the last aboard. I was the First Class
of the Boiler room in 1987 to 88. I replaced Chico, who had her long before me. We spent six
months at the dock getting her ready before getting underway for the first time. We took her to
Halifax NS, where I leaned that Cannucks take Curling very seriously. Then on to San Juan PR. We
blew a rusted-out pipe flange way up in the stack just as the last line went over. Three weeks later
we grew tired of the Black Angus and Barcardi. Did a little Drug Interdiction and Hatian Migratian
Repatriation and then some liberty in GITMO and Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic. My two FN's had to
be bailed out after wrecking their rented mopeds. They gave their names as John Deere and John Doe.
I have to admire their creativity. We made a few short trips after that, and then the word
came...she was headed for Decomm. The last 6 months aboard her we painted and polished every inch
of the boiler room and the rest of her. We wanted her to go out in style and look her best for her
new owners. At the time, we didn't know who that was going to be; the Intrepid Museum or the Ingham
Society. The Decommishining ceremony was one of the most emotional days of my life. I had only been
aboard her for a year but I fell in love with the old girl. She has a soul and I think we all felt
it that day. My in-laws visted her in Charleston last year and brought me photos and pamplets and
brochures. I could see from the photos that the salt air and the years had not been kind to her.
From the air, she looks like a dingy next to an aircraft carrier. My heart swelled and my eyes
teared when I saw the photgraph of the plaque that we had engraved and fixed to the front of the old
Babcock and Wilcox firebox. 'MKC K. McLEAN, MK1 G. HAMMOND,MK2 L.DODGE, FN T. NEWTON....Larry,

govoners office since 9-11-01. I have e-mailed history channels, save our history, about her and
have seen it on the history channel in Nov.2001. Their are vulunteers that do their best with up-
keep and I would, but travel with work too much. I believe more can be done from S.C. fund raising
and going to keep trying to get answers.

Steve Brown (Denton, MD) and RD3 Mize (I think he was from WVA). I was from Cape Charles, Va and
used to ride back and forth on the weekends with Brown, riding the ferry across from Kiptopeke Beach
to Little Creek. Any information on either would be appreciated. Thanks.

saddened and happy for the OLD GIRL, MIGHTY 'I'. I spent 2 years on her and it was great. We worked
hard to keep her in good shape. I was there for the CIC fire and the starboard turbine repair. At no
time did I think of taking pictures of the damage, I wish I had, so if anyone has pictures of this,
please share them with the rest of us. Also I am starting to collect any other pictures you have,
please send them to me using 'jpeg'. From this collection I would like to create an album to
presented to all my shipmates via a website I am working on. Please help me preserve the OLD GIRL
even if its only in picures. I would like pictures from every part of her from everyone who has some
to share, even you officers and former captains. With every picture, please let me know who you are
and when/where it was taken. Nothing is classifed anymore, so please share pictures from those areas
too. Thank you everyone in advance. This is going to be a great album for a great ship. Lets have
some fun here everyone, take care. If you can't e-mail them because you have to many. E-MAIL me and
I will give my address. Thanks again. Write me soon. Bill Wester, Former Shipmate

GTMO. Man, I had no idea what I was in for. I remember the cadet cruise to Europe and playing
guitar on the fantail. Then I went off to ET 'A' school. It's ashame the boat has deteriorated to
it's present state. When she was decommissioned she should have stayed in New York. There she
would have been alongside the Intrepid, been in a very visible environment and would have recieved
all the maintenance required. That's a fact ! I retired 8/1/01 and have fond memories of this
cutter and the friends I made along the way.

together with Tony Kloska our model ship builder. Tony lives in Sebasten Fl.we have been to the
coast Guard station in Fort Pierce. They have two 87 foot cutters stationed thier. We were well
recieved and it was fun aboard the cutters built in 2000. All computerized. I asked what if your
computer goes down. The skipper opened a drawer and pulled out a lap top. This is our back up. No
big wheel to steer. You sit on a stool and steer with a 5 inc lever. They sleep on 6 inch
mattresses. Remember ourbunks. Canvas tied to metal frame with 2 inch mattress? You don't have to
slide down the steps to go below deck. They have nice wide stairs. No lockers. They have drawers
under the bunks. We had lunch with them and the cook was a female. Boy how things have changed.
Nice chatting with you. Hope to hear from you Gene Kiss

visiting the new DD Museum in New Orleans. It was quite an expieriance. So real, all about WW11.
