I was aboard GLACIER for DF 74-75 - The Year We Threw The Screw ! I was an AE-3 in the AirDet. What an experience. Spent 9 days ice bound in the Weddell Sea before finally getting out. Some of the crew had already been evacuated, figuring GLACIER was going to winter over, right where it was. But the trip home was great. Sailed up the inter-coastal waterway along the west coast of South America. Absolutely beautiful scenery ! I wouldn't do all that again for a million bucks. But I wouldn't take 10 million bucks for the memories and experiences !

Hey Chief Horton! I was on the 'G' when you were, and made the DF-70 trip. I can't remember what you look like, but I recognized the name. The one QMC I do remember is QMC Waite (sp?), who made me go outside in -65 degree weather to clean the bridge windows. When the vinegar he made me use froze on the windows, I came in and asked him 'Anything other ideas Chief?' He got kind of pissed at me...... SEMPER PARATUS!

Sad to report the untimely passing of Jimmy 'Boomer' Buma. Jimmy crossed the bar way too soon due to a brain aneurism on September 28, 2007. He served from '76 to '83 in the Nantucket Lightship, Station Boothbay Harbor and USCGC Glacier. He was a class act with a heart and a smile as big as a house, and was one of the best MK's I've ever had the pleasure of serving with. He will be missed very much. (See the memorial board for more info.)

great site. I was among the 10 coasties that flew to New Zealand to meet big red en rout on DF 75-76. I was fresh out of EM A-School and enjoying meeting other coasties 'in the same boat' as I was. Mike 'Chip' Reily was one of them. Unfortunately, he barely made flight time as they were preparing to close the door on the aircraft. It was funny at the time, but later in the Wedell Sea, we wished he would have missed the flight. Terry, where are the pictures you speak of ? How about 'Gomez'. Ron, I'm trying to picture you, were you in the band with 'one beat Boda' ? Lots more to come.

I was the one who was AWOL in McMurdo with him , I think it was too many double brown Lion brews , we cleared it up with Capt Taylor and I went off to AD school, and went back into Polar Ops Mobile. then 2 more long trips on the Star. had one black shoe and one brown shoe. Also painted a lot of murals on the Glacier, mess deck and passagways. Anyone heard from Julio Leto?? Or does anyone have any pictures of some of my paitings? Ended up at LA air sta, Semper P

Glacier, DF 69/70. I remember the fire was in the linen locker but was initally thought was just another stack fire, so we hosed the boilier room which had just been cleaned and painted. It cost the ward room their new carpet. I was in the Oceanographic Crew and was in one of the labs listening to 8-Track tapes when we hit the Ice Burg - threw me off the stool. I was on the diving team and actually discovered and took underwater pics of the long dent that ended in the hull penatration at sea chest # 1. Diving in Punta Arenes harbor trying to plug the hole and they start moving the ship - with divers over the side. Does anyone else remember the floating university ship that stopped in Punta Arenes for fuel and the students convinced the Capt to stay because we were there? I think everyone had dates with English speeking teens, what a nice diversion. We got stuck and there was talk of wintering over but a wind shift opened up a lead and we went to break out the Gen San Martin (also hull #4). About that same time another ship was stuck and asking for help and one the Russian icebreakers was dispatched (or was it one fo the Russian ships that was stuck), but I think she got her self out. I remember working on and fixing the towing winch, that it was reported had not worked for a number of cruises. The first time I saw the Glacier I was assigned to the Staten Island. The Glacier was sent north to help us and the Canadian icebreaker John A. Mac Donnald break out the Northwind. The Glacier got herself stuck as soon as she entered the ice. Breaking Ice up north takes different tactics than down south. We (the Staten Island) had to turn around to help the Glacier, but the Glacier got herself out before we got there. My main memory of the Glacier is that it was a failed design experiment - did anyone ever wonder why it was a class of one ship? Yes it was one powerful beast, but it was a nightmare to keep running due to cramming all that extra engineering into the space allotted. I'll bet the three new breakers don't have that problem. Don't get me wrong, leaving the Glacier was a tough decision to make. I have fond memories that I will cherish forever. But my first love must be for the Wind Class Icebreakers.

Living in Iowa now, and when you tell someone you were booked for AWOL in Antartica, they look at you like you are making it up??? When I die, send me back to Wellington. For any of you Glacier sailors that ever made a stop in Punta Arenas, I'm sure you remember a 'night club' called 'Maria Teresa's'. It billed itself as the southernmost 'house' on the face of the earth. I remember some tough nights on SP duty collecting some of my ship mates from the place.. We just stopped by Punta Arenas on a cruise ship and two of the things I wanted to do most were to rub the toe of the indian on the Magellan statue - something about insuring you'll return again and, see if old 'M.T.'s' was still there. Our guide chuckled when I asked about it and he said it was in fact still there, still in business and apparently still owned and operated by the same family after 114 years. We took a small detour to the neighborhood and there it was - just as I remembered seeing it. Some of my shipmates that I dragged, carried and otherwise removed from the joint were in pretty bad shape. Just a little 'blast from the past'...

Bentzley (DF80, DF81 and DF82) – The following I wrote on January 19, 2001; I corrected some words and here is the repost: Damn, it is great seeing the names of my old shipments here!!!! When I visited this site and the related sites, I started to relive those fantastic years. If I had known the importance of those years at the time, I would have bought all three cruise books. I was frugal and only have the DF80 book. Maybe someone could scan their cruise books from DF81 and DF82 with Adobe Acrobat and post them in Fred’s Place? • The times on the fantail: drinking coffee mixed with hot chocolate, country music in the background, performing piston coring operations led by Dr. John B. Anderson. • Bumping the dirty berg with the ship’s prow; attempting to get a soil sample using plastic piston coring sleeves. • Of course, the loss of the LCVP will always be remembered and recounted. • The Fanning Island incident; I was in ops berthing at the time and can give a description of the ever-accelerating-sound/vibration coming from the anchor windlass, followed by silence. • Which Deep Freeze did we loose power to a screw on the way to Punta Arenas? That is the worst place for it to occur. • Steadily making way through the pack ice in the Ross Sea, surrounded by a brown ice fog with the odor of sulfur due to an erupting Mount Erebus. This was true adventure bordering on science fiction. No job since has enriched me more nor giving me a greater feeling of accomplishment than I experienced on Big Red with so many good friends.

Sailed on big red from 72-76.Many good memories and lots of work.Captains were West and Gillett.Loved Valpo,Lima,Fiji,Wellington and even Pt.Barrow as we would go ashore and drink beer on the beach and run from the polar bears one year.As captain Bull Benkert of the Minnetonka when I sailed on it,when inport we play, when at sea we work. That carried over on each ship I sailed on but especially on big red.Out of all of the trips I made I can remember only once when we had all 10 engines up and running at once and that was the time we broke two blades off of the starboard screw. But we never missed a mission and broke more ice then the other breakers until the Polar class came along. Those guys in B1-B2-B3 I have a lot of respect as you guys busted your butts to keep the equipment running. The electricians I had did an outstanding job with what we had on top of standing watches.I reported on board after a south trip on the southwind and the glacier was in the yards for a year.It was a nightmare on our north trip as the equipment was breaking down and fuel problems. But after a month the engineers had most up and running.Wished I could remember names as my cruise books were trashed by my ex.Ottie,Norwood, handjob,McNamara,Mcmichaels,Anyone out there lets hear from you.

Boiler Room mishap? We had a Boiler Tech that was electrocuted in the boiler room. It was during movie time. I believe his name was Reilly. He was a young kid (I was only 17). I do remember him complaining about an ear-ache and him being on medication. Not saying that was the cause but, as I recall, the electrical panel was open and he backed into it and leaned on two ungrounded wires. That was a bummer. The mess cooks were spooked having to go down to the refers to get food. I was also on the Norht trip after we lost two blades on one of the screws and lost the whole shaft as well as an anchor. Captain 'Broken Blades' Gillette ended his career in Guam.

I got a kick out of Ron Hall's comments on getting stuck. I was sitting in a bar in Switzerland reading a swiss news paper. And the artical was about the Glacier being stuck in Antarctica. What was also interesting was that no one read anything about it in the US that I know of.

I sailed on the Northwind between '75 and '77 ....... For a number of years I've been thinking of going back to visit these great places. I just found a terrific deal on cruises to the Arctic and Antarctica. Celebrity Cruises has a polar class Russian icebreaker on a 13 day cruise to the Arctic (on 9/4) and 11 day cruises to Antarctica (on 10/25 and 11/6). I've shopped prices and these cruises look like a great deal. Since the cruises take place soon it looks like Celebrity is offering last minute deals. The price is roughly $5,000 per person (includes all food, drinks, excursions, etc.). Similar cruises with other companies go for about twice that amout. The icebreaker has zodiacs for exploring and even two helicopters that take passengers out to view the area. I got this information from Celebrity's website (www.celebrity.com). I called the number they show (866-973-8466) to get the price information. Anyway, I'm seriously considering taking one of these cruises and thought I'd pass the information on to those of you who may be interested too.

Remember well the initiations and the raid on the soda locker to steal the fish gut surprise. Only me and Joe Scroggs really know what we mixed up in E&S to get revenge on the crew that stoled the fish guts as I slept right next to them. Sorry to hear about Kathy, we all have fond memories of Kathy and the Mazda RX-7 she let us drive and don't forget the parties at her place. I still can remember taking a drunken bloody dog to the vets at two in the morning and Bruce Tweed setting the pickup on fire with me and Nick Smart sleeping in the back. So now I'm sitting on a 140 in the great lakes doing my best at surviving my last tour before retiring, having to listen to weak ass sea stories that don't even match a bad sea story off the Glacier.

Hi Guys and Gals, I remember some of these stories very clearly. I was on the Glacier from '69-'71. I remember the iceberg we hit. Do you remember that Ens. Pitt was the OD so we called the iceberg, 'Pitts-berg'. I remember the fire and 'Smokey Robinson'almost buying it. How about having to clean out the hold near on the fantail of all the damaged drums of whatever was down there. I was a RM2 and wondered why I was getting my hands dirty hauling that mess up out of the hold in heavy seas. Then breaking the ice off the topsides that accumulated there as we went through the storm in Cook Inlet. Watching the 'Graduate' at least 50 times in the mess deck while eating some of RM1 Andy Scharf's homemade icecream from the GEDUNK. Liberty call in Punta Arenas watching a ship unload dead cows in the harbor, rinsing our feet off in a antibacteria solution before leaving the pier on libo to go to the Golden Chicken Club ! ! ! ! I guess I could go on but I better get back to work. Nice tossing out some memories.

I am writing a screenplay for a feature film about the Glacier. (This is all fiction.) The story is about the Captain's last voyage to the North. The basic setup is that the Coast Guard is going to the North Shore of Alaska to take soundings before any oil exploration can take place. The problem is that one of the big oil companies has already started exploring. They don't want anyone to know about it. One of their high powered lobbyists is asking congress for approval of future exploration with the full knowledge of the illegal drilling already taking place. The lobbyist's job is at stake as well as the reputation of a well known popular politician who is in favor of the funding. The lobbyist will do anything to keep the Captain from completing his job. They hire a sabateur to join the crew and undermine the mission any way they can. If you would like to send me any short stories about your experiences on the Glacier I would love to here about them. If your story ends up in the screenplay I doubt if the movie production company will do any more than acknowledge your contribution with a special thanks to... you've seen it at the end of the credits. I always wanted to go back up and break some more ice. If the studios like the script, who knows? But, I always thought being on a round bottom ship was pretty darned exciting especially in typhoons and crashing into blue ice. You can email me if you have any stories you would like to share. I look foward to hearing from you.

Served on 'Big Red' during Deep Freeze 82and 83. Just returned from a 7 day Royal Caribbean cruise which departed from San Pedro. First time I was back to California since I left Glacier in May of 1983. I was shocked at how much has changed. The Long Beach Naval Base is gone. Long Beach city is now a big little city. It is much bigger and cleaner than it was in the early 1980's. Station Terminal Island is much more modern then in the past and there is an I.N.S. building just outside the gate to the pier at Southwest Marine where the Glacier used to tie up. But the saddest sight of all was that Joe Biffs is now a vacant run down building. I hope all of my old Glacier buddies are well.

Hello anybody old enough to remember but not yet feeble-minded enough to forget. Reported aboard 1700, 11 June, 1966. Ship in dry-dock, looked like a big pregnant 'Guppy'. In August departed for Long Beach with only half engines available and no evaps, plus only half of the ship was painted CG colors. I do believe that ship was an experience to all who served on her, though, not all pleasant. Loved spending all that time in the ice having to receive water from Eastwind once a week. Not to mention having the ship 'In Irons' in the raging currents of magellan straits off Punta Arena, Chile. Students coming aboard at Valpaiso during open-house and hanging a North Vietamese flag over the side of the bridge-wing had an intresting effect too. But, guess what, I reluctantly left the 'Glasseer' in June of '68 due to having the billet changed to a BMC diver's billet. Otherwise, I might still be on her. It wasn't all bad and it wasn't all good , but, an experience it was!!!

It seems that the Glacier had a real 'thing' with the anchors. I recall spending the night off the California coast in 1968 when there was a problem with the anchor during sea trials. The yardbirds loved all the OT. There was also an anchor problem in Punta Arenas the preceding South trip that, as I recall, caused considerable problems with the government and fuel company. My memory is that we managed to damage their fueling systemas we tried to anchor and refuel.

Good to see the names of so many shipmates and that all is well with you. Made DF 81, 82, and 83 on Big Red, then later AES 90 and DF 91 on Polar Sea - Glacier was THE ship by far in crew, performance, and class. And I remember the lost anchor/Fanning Island saga well. Do you also remember that at the other end of that trip, anchored off Punta Arenas, we stripped the anchor windlass motor with the anchor out? And the ever-resourceful engineers had to switch the motor over from the side that didn't have an anchor (starboard?) to the side with chain out, so we could get underway for the inland passage northbound. Best tour for me by far. Later, while on Polar Sea the CO, Capt McClelland, suggested changing the Polar pig's motto to 'Follow Me' as Glacier was decommissioned by then, but a revolt by ex-Glacier sailors aboard defeated the idea. Am now retired in San Diego, best wishes to all, Dale.L.Thompson@kp.org

Hello to all members of the Glacier community. I was aboard from 6/80 to 4/82 and I vividly remember the anchor incident. Two things that remain very clear about that event; (1) the velocity of the anchor chain as it was travelling across the deck, (2)the chart we used that day was dated 1936. Many good memories about the ship and people aboard during those south trips.

Ross Tuxhorn, 1976-78. Glacier was my first unit in CG, now 23 years later, I'm calling it quits. Retiring up here in Juneau next month, with immediate plan to go fishing -- still need to catch a monster halibut. Enrolled in MA/teaching program at Univ Alaska Southeast. Will complete the program next year at this time and look for a teaching position in a secondary school. GLACIER was a great unit, enjoyed 2 North & 1 South trip. Best regards to all my old shipmates.

I spent last week on the Glacier with 5 others, some Navy, andsome Coast Guard, and someone that just volunteered. She needs some work. As you know, there is a 'Glacier Society' that is attempting to gain title to her and put her to sea again. At present the deck drains are plugged, and water is getting into the berthing spaces. If you have a desire to help out, there isa lot that you can do right now if you can spare some time andenergy. She's far from a lost cause, and you might enjoy giving a little back to a ship that was your home for part of your life. The bigwork will come later once she is dockside, but she needs help now.She still 'feels' the same, and I hope to see her again somedaywith. smoke billowing from her stack! Hi Shipmates I'm currently working with a group to take the Glacier out of mothballs and around to Conn. as a floating museum and training platform. We need information from crew members on her decom crew and last cruise. We are also looking for volunteers to help get her into shape to get underway for Conn. We have made a couple of preliminary visits to the Glacier. She doesn't look too bad considering they didn't make any attempt at preservation at all. We are planning to make another visit in May. We are looking for volunteers to do some clean up and surveying of the spaces to make out work lists for what we need to do.

2/27/99 CDR Bill Kelsey (ret) - Just signed on after learning of the Glacier site from Frank Mullen. It's great to see so many familiar names...Some more clarification of the Fanning Island anchor incident. We left the island right after losing the anchor and didn't return to look for it until the next day. By that time a sea had developed and was breaking on the outer reef of the island, near where we thought we had lost the anchor. We took the dive team in to look for it, and ran into some pretty cloudy water and a wicked long shore current. When I went over the side to scope things out I was nose to nose with one of those pesky grey or brown reef sharks...he wasn't very big (4 to 5 feet) but he had what seemed like a thousand of his brothers and sisters with him!So, Al SVihra and Jay Whalen went in (with bang sticks) and tried to fight the current and dirty water...to no avail. As far as the loss of the LCVP, it either happened on the mid-watch or on my 4-8 ( I was the ship's navigator at the time). I certainly didn't hear it go..it was a little busy that night! Please drop me a line if you can!

I remember both the anchor incident and the loss of the LCVP. I was on special sea detail in the anchor windlass room and was wondering what was going on with the anchor paying out so fast. By the time I took over the brake, it was too late. BM1 Bill Morgan, if I remember correctly saved quite a few people by clearing the deck. I think the final problem lie with the brake handle on deck being labeled backwards and whomever was on it, kept turning it the wrong way. In regarding to that damn LCVP, the engine was my first project (to put back together) after reporting aboard. I found pieces in the fan space and at TI. We never got to test run the engine as we received the wrong starter just before we sailed and it never got underway on its own power!! I was surprised to see it was gone (and happy too!). That storm is one I'll never forget. During the next yard period, we found all the hard boiled eggs, salt & pepper shakers, etc., that escaped under all the mess deck benches! Great to read about everyone!! I am still at MLCPAC (vr-5) Patrol Boat Type Desk. We just received that Coast Guard's latest acquisition, the new 87' Coastal Patrol Boat (CGC BARRACUDA, 87301) which is homeported at Eureka, CA. If anyone is interested, I can forward some photo's from work. My work e-mail is: DBrock@D11.uscg.mil. See Ya!!

Jeff O'Connell is right, in part. We did leave Fanning Island the same day and were required to go back the next day to look for the anchor. We did not go to the wrong side of the island, however. (That sounds like the sort of rumor that gets passed around the mess deck when there seems to be no reason for what the captain is doing.) No, even back in 1980 we had charts, and we even maintained a plot, so it was not hard to find the anchorage. Since I was driving when we lost the thing, Captain Coste had me drive when we went back to find it. Bill Kelsey and Jay Whalen were the divers that went over the side to look. My recollection is that they could see the anchor on the bottom every time a gap appeared in the cloud of sharks. We left it. The LCVP incident that Jeff mentions happened (if I'm thinking of what he's thinking) on Deep Freeze 80 the previous year. We ran into a stiff gale on the way from McMurdo to Wellington: green water on the pilot house, 60 degree rolls, that sort of thing. Sometime during the midwatch a wave took the LCVP out of its cradle on the port side O2 (or was it O3?)deck. Snapped the steel gripes. Thing is that nobody heard it go. How is that possible? That's what the captain wanted to know too (Capt Bruce Little). We ended up going back to look for that too, an even more fruitless search than the one for the anchor. At least THAT didn't happen on my watch.

An additional factoid of the Fanning Island ANCHOR incident: We departed Fanning southbound later that day and then were directed to return to Fanning to search for said item. Problem was, the skipper went back to the wrong side of the island to search??? for the anchor. I heard the island was infested with landcrabs anyway- worse than picnic ants. Anyone else want to describe the LCVP incident shortly after the anchor loss?

On 04/08/98 Frank Mullen said:
What I said was, ''Let go the starboard anchor,'' and let go we did. (Remember, everyone, don't use quotes in these notes.) The buoy tender from Guam (I think) recovered the anchor while we were whacking around in the ice that year and delivered it back to Long Beach. There it was when we returned the next spring, sitting on the pier, painted bright pink.

I can only describe my relationship with the Glacier as almost the best time of my life. Without question, the memories will be with me always. It was an honor to have served on board and a pleasure to synchronize with the mates. Though at the time, it seemed like time stood still, those months were the ultimate experience. One episode stands out... we were to have a picinic on an island near Figi. In order to do that, we had to drop anchor. I was assigned Anchor Detail and was told to secure the anchor chain when ordered. Even though I am blonde and a female, I had no idea that avast meant to secure the anchor. I just thought that everyone was saying fast, the chain is going fast. Well, we lost the anchor, chain and all. I remember the noise as steel on steel ripped from the bulkhead. Needless to say, Capt. Coste reassigned my duties. To this day, I still feel reponsible for my fellow shipmates missing their picnic. Not to mention the expense of tax-payers money to recover the anchor. Anchors aweigh my friends!

The Association is a great idea, as is the idea of an all-Icebreaker reunion to coincide with launching a new one. Looking forward to it!

Greetings! I was an SA aboard the Glacier in '66 when she sailed from Boston to Long Beach via Panama Canal. She was bound for the ice shortly thereafter, but I got orders for DC School before she got underway. Nobody was supposed to be able to get off and I had to go before the Old Man and explain how I got transferred. He thought I had bribed one of the Yeomen! My friends on the deck force gave me a going-away party none of us will ever forget!
