Hi All; and Dave Bassin, yep, I remember you. I was the SNGM/GM3 from 5/70 to 5/71(?). You mention a few other names that are familiar, too. Barret, Dodd, Temple, Gordon all are familiar. Rememb er Doc Weddle, QM1 Bob Schwope, Don Driver, BM1 Stansbury, Ens.' Joel Thuma & Bill Dozier, and Lcdr Jan Dasey?? I can picture a few others, but can't put names to the faces. It's been almost 40 years. We'll save some of the stories we recall till a later time, to protect the guilty. Later, Bud Hall

Ahoy all you old black hull buoy critters...I am putting together a photo album specific to all the 180 class tenders ( I was aboard CLOVER and WOODRUSH) and am looking for some unique pictures of these boats. Pictures of deck/buoy ops, small boat ops, inside the ship and patches are what I am looking for. I can't promise I will use all of them, but when I am finally done, my intentions are to provide a copy free to anyone who wants it, you would just need to pay postage. Thanks mates, looking forward to those pictures.

The October 10, 2001 issue of Soundings, a Norfolk area paper focusing on military issues, noted the following: In the 1980's the Gentian underwent a $13.5 M repair and updating. On May 26, 1998 it was decommissioned only to have the hull painted white and be recommissioned on May 27,1999 as Coast Guard Cutter Gentian WIX 290 a Caribbean Support Tender. She now works out of Miami with multi mission responsibility including; Training, Logistical Support and Maintenance for a number of nations in the Caribbean. She spends an average of 185 days away from Miami visiting about 22 countries training foreign crew members. She is now 59 years old and appears to be still going strong. Guess she joins the Eagle as one of only two training ships in the Coast Guard.

I was a decky on board the Gentian for a brief stay in 1989. I remember pulling lines with Berryman and Singletary -- Hey, Barry - did you ever marry your girl? I can't believe Niles is a CO? How'd that happen? So, the Gentian has been 'afloat' (I use the term loosly) for quite a few years -- maybe that's why she couldn't stay out of the yards!! :O) I'm still married to that cook from the Pt. Martin -- 11 yrs now, our boy is going to be 10!!!! in January!! EEEEEEeeeeekkkkkkk!! Teenage years just around the corner ;o)

I'm amazed and pleased that the Gentian is still afloat and in operation. I recall some of you from then and Ethel the cat. I retired 10/89, settled in Maine. I couldn't have had a better unit to start a career on. Thanks for the invite, Cdr Holland; may just try to find a reason to get to Fl. Do the younger/current crew realize just how much water and history the Gentian has seen. USCG from Jan. 1957 to Jan. 1961. Served on the CGC Gentian June, 1959 to Jan., 1960. Helped the Seabees build the Loran Station on South Caicos Island, hauling equipment between Grand Turk & South Caicos Islands. Stationed aboard a LCM. Chief Patterson (I believe) was the skipper of the LCM. Slept in tents with all kinds of bugs, creatures & critters roaming around. What I remember most was the salt flats that stunk up the whole island. The native people on the island we called Bee Wees for B.W.I., British West Indies. I hate to say this, but that was one awful duty station. Hey CO C.W. Bailey, you didn't volunteer the Coast Guard for that I hope, HA, just kidding. Other than that I had a great time in the Coast Guard, wouldn't trade it for anything. Wish I would have stayed in! Any shipmates out there?

As the current CO of GENTIAN, I would like to extend an invitation to all previous crewmembers to visit. As you may or may not be aware, GENTIAN was painted white, redesignated as a 'WIX' and recommissioned as the 'Caribbean Support Tender' during September 1999. GENTIAN is the first, and only, U.S. public vessel dedicated to a primary international mission; international engagement, training, logistics and maintenance assistance to the maritime services of the Caribbean Region. Still perform typical USCG missions as 'secondary,' but ATON is no longer one of them. Boom and hold are used for cargo. As she approaches her 57th year, I am happy to report that GENTIAN is still in great shape, mainly to due the efforts of her past crews. She has also received a number of upgrades, but not too many that would cause her to be completely unfamiliar to many of you (except maybe the white hull!). So please stop by and see us at our moorings at ISC Miami. Would ove to swap some 'sea stories.'

My dad Jim T Kane EN2 was on her port WWII patroling off the Carolinas when they came across a Russian trawler. My dad was on the boarding team when they boarded her. While conducting the boarding they noticed that the fish hold was not as big as it should have been. Further investigation revealed a not just a hidden compartment but a whole nother deck below. As they entered the compartment they discovered several crew members unacounted for and complete scale model of the entire east coast of the U.S. in as far as 50 miles consisting of ship yards, military bases, and factories. They were also equipped with advanced listening equipment, radar more advanced than our's, at that time, and loads of diving egear and photography gear. Like Patten said we should have kept marching on through. This happened around 1946. Most of their gear was created by captured German engineers from the war and equipment confiscated after the war. Any crew members around from then?
