I was on the Firebush from 1996-1999 and had a great tour. Left Firebush and went to D-1(oan) and next NESU Boston as the District Boat Maintenence Manager. Retired in Aug 2007 as CWO4 and recently took a nice position with NOAA working out of the old Scituate, MA station.

Just wanted to pass on the sad news,...Chief Warrent Howard J. Pepper crossed over the bar last month, (May),...the Chief was a very well liked man aboard the Firebush, and kept in touch with a few of us over the years. Hope he will forever have wind in his sails.

I was the 1st Lt onboard FIREBUSH from 1982 until 1985 – my first tour as a bright and shiny Warrant. I was going through some of my old FIREBUSH memorabilia and came across an old Liberty List. I’m not quite sure exactly the date, as it’s a “clean copy” I must have appropriated from the ship’s office. The CO was J. Scott Merrill. I had the pleasure of running into him years later in Alaska. I appreciate all the patience he had with me. XO was Dennis Williamson and the Warrant Engineer was Klaus Steinhorst, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Others in the Wardroom were Ensigns Tim Bushrow, Steve Barker, and Gene Cunningham. Chief’s Mess included BMC Gil Page, EMCS Mark Delozier, MKC Mark Jamison, and MKC Mike “Bubba” Hughes. In First Class Quarters were MK1 Pat Hickey, SS1 “Jojo” Guterrez, and ET1 Mike Day – Mike was at Group Grand Haven when I was across the street at Station GH, HS1 “Richard” Doc “Lyman, RM1 Ralph Montgomery, QM1 Ken Levine, and BM1 Dave Billings In the snipe locker was MK2 Randy Marcotte, DC2 Lester Rawls, MK2 Andy Roberts, MK2 “Uncle Milty” Milton Farley, MK3 Ron Wood, EM3 Zane Whitson, MK3 “Candyman” Richard Briggs, and non-rates Daryl Bonds, Mark Salgado, Steve “Wiggy” Hartwig, Keith W. Bentley, Bob Upton, and Vincent Tankersley. The Belly Robbers were SS2 “Burnin’ Bob” Reed, SS3 Mike Stewart, SS3 Bruce Baker, SNSS Leonard Kellow, and SASS Mat Hool. Others Petty Officers in the crew were SK2 Jimmy Boatright, BM2 Larry McGuirk, YN3 Bret Erickson, QM3 Chris Smith, QM3 John Cain, RM3 Steve French, GM3 Derek Fleurant, and SNQM Mike Morton. Saving the best for last were the Deck Apes: SN Gary Bower, and SA’s Roy Shively, Billy Baker, Andy Sermons, Bill Bird, Dan McCluskey, Mark Chapman, Ed Kavanaugh, Lee Morgan, Scott Thayer, and Jamie Paul. As the Morale Officer onboard, I started an underground newspaper called The Bush Times. I've five different issues of the 'Bush Times' in my archives and I also found an old photo of the Deckies that were with me later in my tour. Anyway, I pulled out the 'Bush times and the first is dated June 17, 1983 and has some of these shipmates listed: 'Candyman' Briggs, XO Dennis Williamson (retired from PayCen, Topeka, Kansas), 'Bruiser Bruce', Chief Jamison (lives in Kodiak), 'Uncle Milty' (Milton Farley), Louis Varges, Aton Chappy, ET1 Mike Day (served with him in Grand Haven, MI), Bryan Delozier, and Ens Eugene Cunningham (I ran into him a few times after the 'Bush. Issue two, June 25th, 1983: Ens Sue Daignault - I head she got out, went back east, and joined the CG Reserves. SN Andy Nosel - he made BMC and is retired in the Tampa-St. Pete area. Saw him a few years ago when we were in Tampa. Issue three, September 1984: Rich 'Potsy' Royer, Ens Bob Sharrer, SA 'Sparky' Parks, & the 'new' XO, Lt. Walker. Others named having orders out: Radio Rex, Scooterboot Mike Ward, Jumpin Jack Nepert (he's a retired RDC. Look for his e-mail address at Fred's Place), Harley Keene, Rick Rurak, & QM3 Buck Mayforth. More names: Todd Kubanak, 'Burning Bob' Reed, 'Tito' Carnevale, ETC 'Twinky' Frey. Chuck Farnsworth was the CO by this time. In May 1985, the 'Bush was in Reedsport going through the yards. The Bush Times from that era lists these shipmates: 'Guber' (?- Marvin something or another -I sold him that little brown VW Baja Bug I had), Ens Bob Wheeler, Mike Brennan & Tim Maglinger. Bob Durlin returned from being AWOL and was awarded being the winner of the 'Dan Gackle' School of Disappearing. Seems that Estok, Thompson & Walrod (he made YNC - I've e-mailed him a few times) had a 'reserved' table at the local watering holes in Reedsport. Nick Papania - something about him capsizing in a canoe alongside one night & the GQ alarm was sounded comes to mind, MKC 'MC' Bonifacio, Dave Conner, Al Hodges, Mikey Breenan & Scotty Morris were also in the news. The EO, Walt Morland now lives in Mobile. He's still working and heavy into VW's. I know there are a number of other shipmates out there from later in my tour…Ken Schoener, Mark Corbishley, “Mac” McNaughton (I don’t think Mac ever had a first name), Bill Bishop – He’s a retired HMC living in Michigan now, Tom “Ski” Bruzdowski, and Brian “Chard” Blanchard. Many thanks to all of you, Ya’ll made my job easy. Bosn Bob

Left after my tour and now live in Florida (came here stationed aboard the Steadfast). Would like to hear from other shipmates!

On 03/13/07 Jesse Hummel said:
Borchardt and Izzy, good to see you guys. Kelly, told my son how you saved me from that bouy that broke free. Every once in a while he'll ask me to tell it again. Each time your arm gets longer and the split second shorter. Next time I'll be sure to somehow include your sister's wine with your black vomit in the story. I do remember the brown towel and have decided if I ever smell like that I must have died and didn't know it. Thanks for getting me up on that rock. My life's been good. Izzy you decrepid boot, your post sounds like you knew what you were doing, good to see your name. Next time put a chit in. No luck on finding BM1 Terry or Louise Hubbard. Anyone know where to contact them let us know.

On 02/11/07 Mike Harjes said:
I was an MK3 on the Firebush from when the Baltimore yards owned it till Jan80. Was one of the early ones sent from the Citrus to Baltimore to try to break it before it was signed over to CG. Was there for the Great Baltimore Sandbar jump....the ensign navigating found out the hard way that the local charts were in feet, not fathoms like the charts at Kodiak. I have pictures of a real shiny screw when they put us back up in drydock to repaint what the sand removed. I was one of the fools that got chased back on board by the sharks while waiting to get into the canal....the pilot thot is was real funny. I was the small boat engineer during the priest rock incident....it was bad karma.

Ahoy all you old black hull buoy critters...I am putting together a photo album specific to all the 180 class tenders ( I was aboard CLOVER and WOODRUSH) and am looking for some unique pictures of these boats. Pictures of deck/buoy ops, small boat ops, inside the ship and patches are what I am looking for. I can't promise I will use all of them, but when I am finally done, my intentions are to provide a copy free to anyone who wants it, you would just need to pay postage. Thanks mates, looking forward to those pictures.

I served proudly with CWO4 Steinhorst (Steiny) from 1991-1994 abord the USCGC Midgett. He taught me more then any other person EVER. I was honored to have presented him with a retirement plaque with a poem I wrote explaining how I and many others felt about him and how much he did for others. He could be a very strict and difficult person to work for BUT once you proved yourself to him he would let you into his soul, to learn what he was about and the wealth of information he had to give. As I stated on his plaque he was quite simply 'The man'. I will miss you forever Steiny. Bozz

I just saw Rod O'Connor's messages. I served with you on her 1970 to 1974. A few months ago I found an old photo of her on the internet circa 1969 and it looks like she is in Raritan Bay. I had the photo as my screen saver until last week when we lost our hard drive. I would love to get it back. I still keep in touch with Tom Shields DC2 and a ret. Lt. Albany NY PD. She was Featured in a tv show in the 1950 on chanel 5 in NY. I rember seeing some photos of it when I was on board. Someone may have them out there. I still have an old tee shirt with Popeye on it. My wife had a new shirt made and had it embroider with the same picture from the boom control panel. I see by the emails that a patch was made. It would be great to purchase or trade someone for one. I have plenty of Johnstown NY PD patches, 24 years working there left me with a lot of old uniforms. I still have fond memories of her and the crew I served with. I still think the old uniforms looked better. I still have my dress blues/Whites and Hat. My sons have worn them for Holloween. Glad you survive 'Old Blood and Buoys Casey' I still say hit the pit at night.

CGC FIREBUSH was decommissioned 29 May 2003, serving 59 years as a Coast Guard cutter in New York City and Kodiak, Alaska. The day dawned as many in Kodiak do, cool, rainy and blustery. By 1030, a small crowd had assembled under the tent on the Cargo Pier, including myself, my wife Fran, and former QM3 Walt Wenzel from the 1979 era. The rain had stopped, but not the wind, blowing briskly over from Siberia. Lead elements of the new Nigerian crew particularly noticed the cool weather. The official party arrived. The Mayor of the City of Kodiak and the head of the Borough of Kodiak read proclamations commemmorating the day and thanking the ship for its service, the Lieutenant Governor of Alaska knew to keep his words short, D17 made some good remarks - noting that the wind had a real cool bite to it, encouraging all to shorten their remarks. The Captain said his goodbyes to the ship and his crew, then ordered FIREBUSH decommissioned. The XO marched off the remaining hands, only about twenty five left, by name and home town. The division officers reported the cannons spiked, the fires out and the chronometer allowed to run down, etc. The ship's flags and pennants were distributed according to custom. The XO reported to the CO who reported to the Admiral that FIREBUSH was decommissioned. And so FIREBUSH passed from 'In Commission' to 'In Service' status as a Coast Guard vessel. She and IRONWOOD (decommissioned a couple of years ago) are being replaced by the new 225' tender SPAR. All hands adjourned to the Buskin Beach House for last rites and a good time was had by all. At noon, the next day, FIREBUSH departed Kodiak forever, bound for San Pedro and transfer to the Nigerian navy to be a training vessel. Finally, her working days will be warm! I commented to Fran that she was the only person who had both seen FIREBUSH arrive in Kodiak and seen her depart Kodiak. The base at Kodiak remains the same, but everything is different. A lot of the old WWII buildings have finally been removed. There's a new Admin Building, a new Medical Building, Hanger 3 is back to being a C-130 hanger after the arrival of two more C-130s and two more helos. New barracks have been built for the ready crews, the Cargo Pier has had a dog leg extension addded to it, the Fuel Pier has a new outboard mooring extension, the Marginal Pier has been completely abandoned with the access piers removed. And a very nice nine hole golf course is out past the CommSta antennas at Buskin Lake. Almost all the housing on Government Hill and at Lake Louise has been replaced. New housing has been built on Aviation Hill. Nemetz Park has been mostly razed and the remaining quarters are in the process of being abandoned. The MOQs and Chiefs 4plexes have been reworked and upgraded. The JOQs are finally being fixed up (again, after twenty years?) The new Officer's Club seemed very quiet. The Enlisted Club has been replaced with a pizza shop. Change continues as the Air Station was rebuilding Hanger 2 and the utility lines were ripped up in many places, being rebuilt and rewired. The City of Kodiak has a bridge to Near Island to a new boat harbor. Downtown Kodiak is oriented towards the fishing industry even more, as Wal-Mart and Safeway have opened major stores north of town. There's a McDonald's in town now, but the Dairy Queen is gone. Life goes on all around.

Has anybody seen or talked to Dave Billing or Mr. Harko. Is Harko still alive? Man that guy could smoke them. Hey if it wasn’t for the trips to Maui and Sand Island Oahu I would have saved some money. I miss Beachcombers and smoking those cloves cigarettes, but I heard it no longer is and that it burned down. I miss those days. I'm glad I spent time on a black boat. After the bush I went to two 95 footers and felt like I was in a parade or movies every other week. I'm looking for a guy by the name of Paul Morse. Let me know if you have talked to him. Wind storm Cold Bay, we had to use wire cable from the boom to 'hold' us to the pier. Taking my pants off at Rosies bar and grill, Pelican Ak. Dry dock, Portland Or. They worked us from sun to sun, to get time off we had to by tickets for every band that came to town (and we did). The BUSH took me everywhere in Alasks from the Aluetian Islands to the Inlet passage, Seattle, Portland and Island hoppin in Hawaii! Need I say Beachcombers, Kodiak? (I still have the mug!) Too many good times.

I remember being the mess btch in the wardroom and I 'accidentally' cleaned Bosn Bobs grungy coffee cup (if he didn't want it clean, then he shouldn't have drank coffee out of a white cup) .. damn, did I ever get an ass-chewing for that one. Thats OK .. Bosn Bob repaid me later on .. like many years later on .. unknowingly too .. After serving with him in '83, I was on the Legare in '95 and we were tasked by NDBC to chase these hurricane buoys (expendable if I must say) across the North Atlantic (I think they were heading towards Greenland). Well, we finally found them with the aid of the MK92 and a handheld RDF (provided by NDBC .. a primitive piece of electronics; so primitive that it had a home TV antenna tied to a broomstick with wires going to this small box that emitted beeping noises .. but only when we were only less than 1000 yards from the buoy). To sum it up, it turns out the person on the other end of the INMARSAT was my old 1st Lieuy, Bosn Bob. We caught 3 buoys with the RHI boat davit and returned them home (where they were examined by NDBC to see how much 'hurricane damage' they sustained). Who says a 270' can't work buoys???? Ski

I was TAD for Reftra in 88, I really enjoyed my visit of 3 months, and Great Break from the CG commissary, to bad I lucked out and got the Golden Anchor after A76. All the adventures one could ask for, a fishing processor on fire, and thoses 3 low pressure systems, which made the Galley Rock and Roll, for that ride to Pearl Harbor, we looked like a Ghost ship upon arrival. SS's onboard that ride were the Best I've Served with, The Crew itself, were of the Highest caliber. I most certainly enjoyed the crew, and times. Sam it was fun. Phil and John, I am Proud to shared a Galley with you.

Come to think of it, Tom was not on the Bush, he was on the Ironwood with Bill & I, he just had a bad habit of partying at Henry's & the Mecca with us. Lots of good times like the Runaway NOAA Buoy, Drinking ugly Perez Tequila at False Pass, and many evenings in Cold bay, Dutch Harbor, Bellingham, King Cove, and a whole shit load of places I was just got too drunk to remember. Well Boys, Keep up with the fishing & Deer hunting - & if you aint gonna do it right, don't do it at all. I served as a young SA up to a QM2 back at Gov.Is from 1971-75. My first of 3 180s (Also Ironwood and Mallow) Back then, I Never would have dreamed I would stay in CG for 20years. LCDR Casey was CO, then LCDR Smoke...Could Never forget some of those Anchor Watches in Haverstraw Bay or off Sandy Hook. Or fueling Ambrose/West Bank/Execution Rocks. And did we love to party. Many nights a-stumblin' back from the old White Hats Club on Gov.Is., or nearly getting mugged in Times Square..back when it was fun and part of being in the CG. Still, I made a lot of good friends there and try to keep in touch with a few. Now, I see the ship all the time since she is up here at Kodiak. She still looks good, and still has a great crew. Hope she does stay around a few more years. Any old- timers from back in early 70s drop me a line.
