away in 1980 from cancer. Maybe a longshot but wondering if anyone remembers him or had some
stories. I know he had a near death encounter with a polar bear on an arctic expedition when his
crewmates saved him. Anyway, if your looking for photos, I can try and get some from my mom and
post. He had quite an album.

fun time was had by all) and found out that the destination company that was going to handle the
whole thing for us WENT OUT OF BUSINESS ! So, we had to regroup, find a new destination company
(Gatherings Plus), recover the mailing lists from the defunct company, negotiate a new contract and
get this on track while it is still timely. The news from here is that you will have the packets in
your hands by the end of next week or Christmas week at the latest. The dates are still May 19 to
23. This will be an Eastwind/Westwind Rendezvous with 170 rooms blocked at the hotel. Bring friends

History site and found amount the firsts and other records that the Cutter Polar Star was given
credit for the first circumnavigation of Antarctica since 1843, this was done in 1982. I think this
is wrong and I belive our EASTWIND was in fact the first and we did it during Deep Freeze 1967, Does
anyone else remember this? I think it was even mentioned in the cruise book but cannot find my copy
just now. I hope they will change this and give us the credit we all deserve. One other thing does
anyone know of any Coastie that 'wintered over' in the antarctic, I would like to contact anyone who
did so. I know this does not really relate to the reunion but antarctic exploration and history is a
hobby of mine in particular the part played by our Coast Guard. All the best to old shipmates DF
66 and DF 67 and the trip to Thule before that.

We know from the response of mates, we talked to, that they had a good time. We only hope that those
in attendence for the first time are as hooked as most of us. With 107 shipmates in attendence, it
looks like Fathers Day was a good time. Again -THANKS TO ALL & hope to see you in St. Croix &

said: Greetings everybody! New Eastwind Association website domain name: EASTWINDASSOC.ORG
Re-UPloaded today, so it's clearly a little out of date, but at least it's UP! I spoke with Lee
Grant this afternoon by telephone and he (finally) admitted that he had heard a lot of comments
about our website being down, but was expecting 'y'all' to drop your own line to me by email, letter
mail, or (maybe even) telephone. Louie LaRiccia was the only one to do so, but that email didn't
show up until about a month ago, which I replied to shortly after it arrived. I feel I owe a note of
explanation, so let me do so, briefly. Last year was a pretty tough year for me, health-wise.
Three hospital visits in five months, plus the pain-killers and recovery had my mind on 'other
things' and the domain name registration ran out without my noticing. One day I was feeling up to
posting a few new pictures, and low and behold, I was looking at something very much NOT
EastwindAssn.org. The 'squatters' who captured it demanded $300 to return it to my control, and of
course I thumbed my nose (to put it politely) at them. No amount of discussion or cajoling was
effective. Just about the time I finished registering a new domain name (there ARE ways to work
around these jerks) it occurred to me that nobody (as in 'shipmates') had said anything, and since
it had been about 2 months since the old site got hyjacked, it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps
nobody had said anything because nobody knew or cared that it was gone. Hmm. With a TON of other
things to attend to, it seemed inadviseable to spend time on something nobody else wanted or cared
about, so I turned my attention to more pressing matters and waited to hear from someone, ANYONE
regarding the disappearance of EastwindAssn.org. Today's discussion with Lee was not only initiated
by me, but is the ONLY time someone (other than Louie) has even mentioned the topic, even in
passing. So, it's back. A slight variation in the domain name to EASTWINDASSOC.ORG makes it
possible to 'carry on', and the idiots in Nassau can now enjoy their white elephant, as we have no
more use for the domain they clipped. Due to Father's Day commitments at home, I'll not be able
to attend the reunion this year, but am hoping to see at least some of you the next time we get
together. -'Later'

I'm not sure if all my ET shops are trying to run together in my head, or if my forgettery is
getting better than my memory. It may be that we were just shorthanded, but I sure don't remember
many of us peon types, and I sure can't remember what years who was there. During the time he was
there, Van Buren Midgette (then ET1, later CWO from HQ) was the ace ET. I'm sure we must have had
more than one warrant between 62 & 65, but right now Tom Gauld is the only one I recall. I seem to
recall Chiefs Harry Greenslade, Loy Whittle, and Paddy G. Rogers. The only ET2 I recall right now
(other than me, that is) was David ? Vaughn. ET3 Doug Maake. I think we really were short-handed,
but my other excuse might be that I often worked alone at odd hours and didn't spend much liberty
time with ETs. In fact, the majority of liberty pictures I have found from my Eastwind time include
RMs RDs AGs YNs ENs QMs and BMs. I think the only ET I ever went ashore with was Midgette. Separate
subject - does anyone know which former Eastwind Corpsman is now working at the VA Hospital at
Temple, TX? A former Navy friend of my former CG brother recently went to Temple and met a guy there
who had some Eastwind stuff in his office - said he had been a Corpsman.

have a smaller crew, they live very well. We never had a dining room that was like the best buffet
around with great food, enlisted living quarters that were maximum four to a large room or a very
comfortable movie theater that seats about 35 at a time with movies on 60 inch or so flat screen,
satellite input, first run movies that run nearly around the clock. No sheet hanging on the mess
deck. I was blown away to see a couple of very pretty young ladies in the exercise room on the
treadmills. Next to that was the weight room with a four person sauna. The only sauna we had was B2
engine room. We can be proud in knowing that we really take care of our icebreaker sailors today.
And, I'll bet if we looked hard enough we would have found the parlor.

reunions in the near future (unless they can be held in East Texas), but I would like to let all my
shipmates know I am still around and in possession of some of my memory. I remember a lot of the
people who have posted here, and wonder what has happened to many others who haven't. I see that
this board has been truncated in the midst of a message - which has cut off the last message I left
here. Mike Eldred, I remember Dave, but two of my three South trips were after he left. I made
62-63, 63-64, and 64-65. I went to Eastwind as ET3 and made ET2 in less than 3 years (at a time when
people were making Chief that fast) - but I had my priorities in order - Scotch, Rum, aguardiente,
Draft Dominion Bitter, women, and advancement. At least I held on to the rate I started with. Has
anybody heard from (YN) Bob Hoey, (AG)Franklin E. Wiggins, (RD) Lawry Sager, or any of the 'O'
division crew from 62-65? A note for you guys who think it was scary being rammed by a tanker full
of avgas when you were on the bridge: Just multiply the pucker factor by ten and you have a clue
what it was like down on the 2nd deck in afterberth - with dc stores overhead dropping stuff to jam
the scuttle, avgas tanks all around us, and that neat notch in the hull to guide that big flammable
sucker right into our parlor. The sound most likely to wake me in the night when we were towing was
that sudden silence right after the OOD realized we weren't going anywhere and telegraphed 'all
stop'. The silence was deafening - until we could be sure we weren't being rammed.

Chattahoochee and said 'we are stoped'. I steped out on the wing of the bridge and watched black
smoke belch from her funnel as she tried to back down. She tried to run into the ice on our port

name. We can put a stable on the stern so that the snipes can bring their dates - we ( Deckies)
know how those snipes cry and moan when they are away from their loved ones. Otherwise they will
have to date joes fish. Louie the reason why the bridge is in such good shape is because they know
how to take care of their portion of the ship - they are a Deck rate after all!! Louie I don't
care what you call them they are still snipes. We deckies will be eating lobster and corn on the
cob and drinking beer while Louie's 'enginerers' - snipes are cleaning up their mess. Hey
Frankie - how the hell are ya - last I heard you were moving to Canada. I remember a lot of beer
parties on the ice and I cannot think of one where we Deckies were ever out drunk by snipes - Hell
we had McArddle on our team and a case of beer to him was just a warm up. I got to tell you
Joe, although I am a Deckie through and through I do love the smell of diesel fuel - it always
reminds me of the Mighty 'E' Well have to go to a Legion Executive meeting - have to guide all

The reunion could be a work party. After looking at the pictures of the interior - - wow, would the

bridge appears to be in good shape. Being a tug, we could put her to work either as a tug or doing

coming back aboard and coming thru the hatch up at the front of the air castle on the starboard
side of the ship. As soon as you come in the hatch you could smell where all the young deckies had
gotten sick. Then you would have to step over the passed out deckies to get on into the ship . I
guess it had something to do with the cold air outside then coming in to the warm ship. I have some
pictures somewhere of the fire barrels and sailors playing football out there at one of those beer

was so rusted inside the barrel that a BeeBee could not pass thru it. Did run into a mule that was
hanging around the CG airstation up though and she was looking for her friend from Laughlin - said
that her friend had run off to be with Louie and a Frankie for a menagerie-au-tres. She was telling
us up at the Legion Post that her friend said that no one ever sat a sadle like Louie and Frankie.
But she was worried as the last time she heard from her friend was a post card dated August 7th from
the Polar Sea and that her friend was the 'guest' of honor for the annual CG Day BBQ. Chances
are that the Container Rich S is talking about contains some nice mule flank steaks and a few rump
roasts. Less than a year to Portland - time to prepare the ship for sea.

containers filled with liquid under pressure, I assume you know that, and will do all that is
necessary.

along the coast finishing up with a true clam/lobster bake before returning to Portland. Because of
costs, (buses, guides, meals) we will need early commitments. I will post the site after we
finalize the plans. Frankie, I am working on making you happy, more to follow.

day voluteering for the local Chamber of Commerce - started the day at 5:30 Am and finished at 9:30
PM long day - from 10:00 AM to 5:00PM it was running two beer boths. SoIam glad that it has past.
Now I am just getting ready for the American Legion's annual picnic - as the new Commander of the
Post - God help us all - We invited the local CG units to come and enjoy the day. In August the
Post will be inviting the CG units to come to our post dinner and meeting in honor of the CG's
birthday. At last nights meeting some said to me once a coastie always a coastie and I responded
that is true - like the Marines, except we were more intellegent. Well we are down to 11months
till Portland we need to get this chatter going!
