The Tall Ships Festival is coming to Tacoma, WA this July. The Cutter Eagle and an 83 foot cutter are representing The United States Coast Guard. Go to the website 'tallshipstacoma.com' for more info. Tacoma has hosted this event in the past and has been extremely successful. I am a volunteer member with the Harbor Master Group and hope to be involved with the 'Eagle'.

Greetings. My father served on the Eastwind in the 50's. His name was Bob Smith. He passed away in 1980 from cancer. Maybe a longshot but wondering if anyone remembers him or had some stories. I know he had a near death encounter with a polar bear on an arctic expedition when his crewmates saved him. Anyway, if your looking for photos, I can try and get some from my mom and post. He had quite an album. Semper Paratus from a former US Marine.

THE LATEST ON BRANSON - - - Things were ready to go until I got back from St.Croix (BTW, a fun time was had by all) and found out that the destination company that was going to handle the whole thing for us WENT OUT OF BUSINESS ! So, we had to regroup, find a new destination company (Gatherings Plus), recover the mailing lists from the defunct company, negotiate a new contract and get this on track while it is still timely. The news from here is that you will have the packets in your hands by the end of next week or Christmas week at the latest. The dates are still May 19 to 23. This will be an Eastwind/Westwind Rendezvous with 170 rooms blocked at the hotel. Bring friends and/or relatives if you wish. First come, First accomodated.

A couple of things outside of reunion topic. Today I was going over the Coast Guard History site and found amount the firsts and other records that the Cutter Polar Star was given credit for the first circumnavigation of Antarctica since 1843, this was done in 1982. I think this is wrong and I belive our EASTWIND was in fact the first and we did it during Deep Freeze 1967, Does anyone else remember this? I think it was even mentioned in the cruise book but cannot find my copy just now. I hope they will change this and give us the credit we all deserve. One other thing does anyone know of any Coastie that 'wintered over' in the antarctic, I would like to contact anyone who did so. I know this does not really relate to the reunion but antarctic exploration and history is a hobby of mine in particular the part played by our Coast Guard. All the best to old shipmates DF 66 and DF 67 and the trip to Thule before that.

The virgins part might be the end of me on any number of fronts, Frankie. Besides at our age don't you think experience counts? England it is, but then on to Denmark the following week, so don't worry too much about me. St. Croix is nice. I was there two years ago, but the best of it will be seeing old shipmates. If you have enough time don't miss diving or at least snorkleing St. John which is not far away also in the USVI. Its spectacular! Anyway Branson will be the next stop for me. See you there.

On 09/03/07 Frankie Moore said:
David, I wasn't going to go either ,but when I found out about the Blue Moon bar being there it kind of changed my way of thinking. But what really made me decide that I had to go. A friend of mine told me that when the plane lands in St,Croix they issue you 2 virgins for the week. Bet you won't get that in England

On 09/03/07 David Wagner said:
I need to read this page more often. I am very sad to read of the passing of Chief Buckner. I had the honor of serving with him in 64-65 and was fortunate to have him at my table for lunch the day of the Portland bus tour in June. God's speed to a great Coastie and a great guy! Sorry I won't be in St. Croix. I'll be on vacation in western England running a 'Narrow Boat' through their canal system. Who says snipes aren't boatsmen? This trip was planned for more than a year, but I look forward to seeing old friends in Branson next year if haven't 'crossed the bar' myself.

Good to hear from Ray Angleton. For those who are not aware, Ray holds the distintion of being the first Coast Guardsman to set foot on the South Pole. No, he didn't trek all that distance from McMurdo to the pole. He was flown to the pole and got to walk around the earth's time zones in a matter of seconds. He said that he went ahead in time. When he returned to the Eastwind he didn't look any older.

Just got home to Tacoma, WA. Had two flights canceled at the last minute trying to get out of Portland so spent two days getting home. I think I spent almost as much time in airports as I spent at the reunion. Had a wonderful time at the reunion. Thanks to all that worked so hard to put it on. Each time we get together it is more fun and we meet more shipmates. Looking forward to Branson.

Hi Shipmates, Now that most of the attendees of reunion 2007 have returned home. June & I & the committee would like to THANK all the volunteers that came forward to help in the work load. Without the help of the volunteers & the attendees, a reunion would not be worth the work involved, We know from the response of mates, we talked to, that they had a good time. We only hope that those in attendence for the first time are as hooked as most of us. With 107 shipmates in attendence, it looks like Fathers Day was a good time. Again -THANKS TO ALL & hope to see you in St. Croix & Branson. Now the work starts for Reunion 2009 (only 2 years away)

Just wondering what years most men at this site were on the Eastwind. My grandfather was on it during WWII. I've seen tons of pictures of the ship and the time they captured a German vessel. However, I know it was still in service many years after the war so maybe you guys are younger than his shipmates would be (would have been).

Just let me know the date so I can tell the countdown guy. We are sooooooooo ready .I know a lot of shipmates really enjoyed seeing Donald McKinnon and Phil Samuelson after 43 years. On 06/05/07 Rick Webber said:
Greetings everybody! New Eastwind Association website domain name: EASTWINDASSOC.ORG Re-UPloaded today, so it's clearly a little out of date, but at least it's UP! I spoke with Lee Grant this afternoon by telephone and he (finally) admitted that he had heard a lot of comments about our website being down, but was expecting 'y'all' to drop your own line to me by email, letter mail, or (maybe even) telephone. Louie LaRiccia was the only one to do so, but that email didn't show up until about a month ago, which I replied to shortly after it arrived. I feel I owe a note of explanation, so let me do so, briefly. Last year was a pretty tough year for me, health-wise. Three hospital visits in five months, plus the pain-killers and recovery had my mind on 'other things' and the domain name registration ran out without my noticing. One day I was feeling up to posting a few new pictures, and low and behold, I was looking at something very much NOT EastwindAssn.org. The 'squatters' who captured it demanded $300 to return it to my control, and of course I thumbed my nose (to put it politely) at them. No amount of discussion or cajoling was effective. Just about the time I finished registering a new domain name (there ARE ways to work around these jerks) it occurred to me that nobody (as in 'shipmates') had said anything, and since it had been about 2 months since the old site got hyjacked, it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps nobody had said anything because nobody knew or cared that it was gone. Hmm. With a TON of other things to attend to, it seemed inadviseable to spend time on something nobody else wanted or cared about, so I turned my attention to more pressing matters and waited to hear from someone, ANYONE regarding the disappearance of EastwindAssn.org. Today's discussion with Lee was not only initiated by me, but is the ONLY time someone (other than Louie) has even mentioned the topic, even in passing. So, it's back. A slight variation in the domain name to EASTWINDASSOC.ORG makes it possible to 'carry on', and the idiots in Nassau can now enjoy their white elephant, as we have no more use for the domain they clipped. Due to Father's Day commitments at home, I'll not be able to attend the reunion this year, but am hoping to see at least some of you the next time we get together. -'Later'

Right, Midgette was tall & had a moustache, & I believe was one of the outer banks Portugee Midgettes. He sometimes travelled with Rick Lalonde, I think. I couldn't have described Vaughn any better, and Maake was the young guy in the shop. As best I remember him, he was short, just a little chubby, dark hair and clean shave. ............. No Strobes in the afterberth .......... There were enough of us who tended to twitch and foam at the mouth without that kind of stuff to aggravate it.

I've been trying to remember the ET crew 62-63 per request of Rich S. That is scary - I'm not sure if all my ET shops are trying to run together in my head, or if my forgettery is getting better than my memory. It may be that we were just shorthanded, but I sure don't remember many of us peon types, and I sure can't remember what years who was there. During the time he was there, Van Buren Midgette (then ET1, later CWO from HQ) was the ace ET. I'm sure we must have had more than one warrant between 62 & 65, but right now Tom Gauld is the only one I recall. I seem to recall Chiefs Harry Greenslade, Loy Whittle, and Paddy G. Rogers. The only ET2 I recall right now (other than me, that is) was David ? Vaughn. ET3 Doug Maake. I think we really were short-handed, but my other excuse might be that I often worked alone at odd hours and didn't spend much liberty time with ETs. In fact, the majority of liberty pictures I have found from my Eastwind time include RMs RDs AGs YNs ENs QMs and BMs. I think the only ET I ever went ashore with was Midgette. Separate subject - does anyone know which former Eastwind Corpsman is now working at the VA Hospital at Temple, TX? A former Navy friend of my former CG brother recently went to Temple and met a guy there who had some Eastwind stuff in his office - said he had been a Corpsman.

It was a little cramped as parlors go, but I even had a stereo set up (complete with a jazz version of reveille that I used after they made me 'o' division MAA) I kept the beard and even have it on the retired ID that I got in 1980. For some odd reason or other, it seems to be fading some now.

My dad past a few years ago and he was in his early 80's. But the reason I posted on this site was because I have a lot of newspaper clipping about the problems that the Eastwind was having at Castle Rock in Boston, but I knew it as the base. Most of the stories are from the Boston Herald and I would like to know if anybody who was on the ship at that time would be interested in having them.I am not selling them, would just like someone that has them to appreciate them like my Dad did.

Louie, I made a mistake and you know that is normal operation procedure with me. Anyway, it was the Polar Sea I was on last Fall. They didn't show me the accomodations so I guess that was top secret. The crew was hospitable and shared a few sea , ice and land stories. I asked them when I could sign up again. Funny thing happened when I was going through a passage way, I checked out one of their battle lanterns and see if the battery was working. The lady panicked and said, 'Don't touch anything!!!!'. Anyway, the battery checked out o.k.. All that technology and still the same lanterns as on the 'Wind'. I appreciated them letting me aboard though. .... it was great. Louie don't tell anyone.

On 03/07/07 Louie LasRiccia said:
Rich, Sounds like you haven't been on the Polar Star. Shortly after the Icebreaker Muster, Don Hitchcock and I went aboard the Star and were amazed at what they have. Even though they have a smaller crew, they live very well. We never had a dining room that was like the best buffet around with great food, enlisted living quarters that were maximum four to a large room or a very comfortable movie theater that seats about 35 at a time with movies on 60 inch or so flat screen, satellite input, first run movies that run nearly around the clock. No sheet hanging on the mess deck. I was blown away to see a couple of very pretty young ladies in the exercise room on the treadmills. Next to that was the weight room with a four person sauna. The only sauna we had was B2 engine room. We can be proud in knowing that we really take care of our icebreaker sailors today. And, I'll bet if we looked hard enough we would have found the parlor.

On 03/06/07 Rich S. said:

It must be time for me to get back on here. I don't think I will be able to attend any reunions in the near future (unless they can be held in East Texas), but I would like to let all my shipmates know I am still around and in possession of some of my memory. I remember a lot of the people who have posted here, and wonder what has happened to many others who haven't. I see that this board has been truncated in the midst of a message - which has cut off the last message I left here. Mike Eldred, I remember Dave, but two of my three South trips were after he left. I made 62-63, 63-64, and 64-65. I went to Eastwind as ET3 and made ET2 in less than 3 years (at a time when people were making Chief that fast) - but I had my priorities in order - Scotch, Rum, aguardiente, Draft Dominion Bitter, women, and advancement. At least I held on to the rate I started with. Has anybody heard from (YN) Bob Hoey, (AG)Franklin E. Wiggins, (RD) Lawry Sager, or any of the 'O' division crew from 62-65? A note for you guys who think it was scary being rammed by a tanker full of avgas when you were on the bridge: Just multiply the pucker factor by ten and you have a clue what it was like down on the 2nd deck in afterberth - with dc stores overhead dropping stuff to jam the scuttle, avgas tanks all around us, and that neat notch in the hull to guide that big flammable sucker right into our parlor. The sound most likely to wake me in the night when we were towing was that sudden silence right after the OOD realized we weren't going anywhere and telegraphed 'all stop'. The silence was deafening - until we could be sure we weren't being rammed.

Chris, Great to hear from you. The 'Wind' did receive some cuts and bruises in it's years of service. The crew isn't gone Chris, they're on, 'liberty'.

Rich S. I was a SNRD watching a repeater radar and maning the voice radio on the bridge when we came to a stop. Before the OOD could get the words out of his mouth I had already called Chattahoochee and said 'we are stoped'. I steped out on the wing of the bridge and watched black smoke belch from her funnel as she tried to back down. She tried to run into the ice on our port side but she bounced off and slide accross our stern to jam in the ice on the stbd side. Great memories if ya live to tell about them.

On 02/20/07 Rich S. said:
Al F. The railing on the stern did get beat up and yeah it was the 'Chattahoochee' How in hell can you forget a name like that? It's named after the river that flows through Atlanta and flows all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. I didn't mean to get into a geography lesson. Students pay attention!!!! The collision alarm went off and it's was one of those choices....you're either going up or your going down. Not much to choose from. Al good to hear from you. Are you the one that pull the switch? Later. Have to go on 'liberty'.

Hey Rich, I took the other half of the memory pill. The name is USNS PVT. JOHN R. TOWLE. Another ship we took in the next year was the tanker Chattahoochee which damn near ran us down after we told her to pour on the coal because of thick ice, but we hit a big pressure ridge and came to a dead ( pun not intended) stop. I was on the bridge and had visions of a big fireball of aviation fuel and me.

'VOILA' you have your DD214 in hand when you trip off the gangway for the last time and salute 'Ole Glory'. Oh yeah!......'Mount a mule'.........Semper Paratus. Did I forget anything?

We should all chip in and but the Yankton and re-name her - Give her a real icebreaker name. We can put a stable on the stern so that the snipes can bring their dates - we ( Deckies) know how those snipes cry and moan when they are away from their loved ones. Otherwise they will have to date joes fish. Louie the reason why the bridge is in such good shape is because they know how to take care of their portion of the ship - they are a Deck rate after all!! Louie I don't care what you call them they are still snipes. We deckies will be eating lobster and corn on the cob and drinking beer while Louie's 'enginerers' - snipes are cleaning up their mess. Hey Frankie - how the hell are ya - last I heard you were moving to Canada. I remember a lot of beer parties on the ice and I cannot think of one where we Deckies were ever out drunk by snipes - Hell we had McArddle on our team and a case of beer to him was just a warm up. I got to tell you Joe, although I am a Deckie through and through I do love the smell of diesel fuel - it always reminds me of the Mighty 'E' Well have to go to a Legion Executive meeting - have to guide all those old army and Jar Heads through another meeting.

Frankie, I had called FedX and told them about the 'Yankton' and they mistook it as 'plankton' and told me to put the stuff in a jar. No! I said The' Yankton', is a tugboat. They said, 'We can ship it' and then laughter erupted. I told them 'Very funny!'

Louie, The Yanton is tied up under the Mystic river bridge in Boston ,but if you buy it I don't understand how you would get it into the colorado river.

Based on the guy's phone number, the tug is in Maine already, probably Portland or nearby. The reunion could be a work party. After looking at the pictures of the interior - - wow, would the engineers have a task on their hands. (You will note that I refrain from the ferm 'snipes') The bridge appears to be in good shape. Being a tug, we could put her to work either as a tug or doing unique cruises of Casco Bay or the Colorado River to pick up some of s'.S hciR burros.

Hey Guys, Anybody intrested in buying an icebreaker ? The USCG Yankton is for sale . It is a tugboat/Icebreaker and it still runs . Go to this website (ustugs.biz ) Some of you guys could buy it and come to the Portland reunion on it.

On 10/11/06 FRANKIE MOORE said:
Yes Frenchie I do remember the beer party on the ice. The main thing I remember was coming back aboard and coming thru the hatch up at the front of the air castle on the starboard side of the ship. As soon as you come in the hatch you could smell where all the young deckies had gotten sick. Then you would have to step over the passed out deckies to get on into the ship . I guess it had something to do with the cold air outside then coming in to the warm ship. I have some pictures somewhere of the fire barrels and sailors playing football out there at one of those beer parties.

Phil and his wife Marie came thru N.C. and spent the night with Glenda and myself Tuesday night and we spent the day wednesday having a mini reunion looking at pictures of days gone by on the Eastwind and of several of the reunions . I am sure if nothing happens and the creek don,t rise they will be in Portland. I am going to keep looking for old shipmates to come to the reunions. In fact, just 30 minutes before I logged onto freds place I was sitting in my kitchen reading a letter that Benny had sent me just before Laughlin. beautiful fall day up here in Arcata,CA - in fact the best summer day we have had in months! have not written since Benny crossed over the Bar. Good to know he will be on the quarter deck to greet us all when we sail heavens seas. So how is everyone? Terry, I have your CD ready and will get it off this week. Rich S - tried to shoot off that old Japanese cannon but it was so rusted inside the barrel that a BeeBee could not pass thru it. Did run into a mule that was hanging around the CG airstation up though and she was looking for her friend from Laughlin - said that her friend had run off to be with Louie and a Frankie for a menagerie-au-tres. She was telling us up at the Legion Post that her friend said that no one ever sat a sadle like Louie and Frankie. But she was worried as the last time she heard from her friend was a post card dated August 7th from the Polar Sea and that her friend was the 'guest' of honor for the annual CG Day BBQ. Chances are that the Container Rich S is talking about contains some nice mule flank steaks and a few rump roasts. Less than a year to Portland - time to prepare the ship for sea.

When other shipmates, of other times, found out it grew to what we have today. Jerry’s work will always be appreciated and remembered. You deserve the rest, smooth sailing. I know Rick, it's hard to read 'Kanji'. Yes mates, Rick wasn't a gunner's mate. Speaking of gunner's mate, the bos'n and the boys took the container forward and shot the top off the lid by advice and consultation of 'Mr. Gunny'.
