Welling was joking with our Engineering Officer. 'Did you tell Mevey he's going to have to take the
pin rail test before he goes on Liberty?' (Only the cadets had that requirement and certainly not a
snipe).[Although I was a snipe, Jay Henderson had already helped me study for and take my pinrail
test. I missed 2.] ' I said' Sir, I already took the pinrail test '. He was obviously surprised and
said' What? You took the pin rail test?' I said 'Yes and I only missed 2.' My engineering officer
just smiled, that made it all worth it and knowing that I had a new found respect from both. On10/30/04 Zane Mevey
said: Eagle -Europe 77 Favorite memories, first time changing the sail lites atop the 150'mast
while underway in the North Atlantic. Talk about an amusement ride. It was fantastic. Abit of the
white knuckles being the first time I'd climbed in moderately rough sea. After the first few climbs
it became second nature. Another memory. 200 miles off the coast of Spain. Engine broke. Every
sail set, all sails just hanging. Ocean was like glass, smoother than a pond. 378' escorts had gone
ahead, all alone. Dead in the water. Gave me a real respect for the early sailors like Columbus.
What to do? Swim call ! Howver I was more concerned about our guys in the small boat with M-16's on
Shark Patrol that I ever was about a shark. On10/30/04 Zane Mevey
said: Stationed at USCGA New London 77-79. Summers on Eagle: Europe 77. OPSail - 78 Vancouver
,BC via Panama Canal. Favorite memories: 78-Hurricance off the coast of Mexico. No sails set,
motoring only. Ropes strung across engine room to keep people from flying across the slick deck
plates. Jay Henderson turning the throttle wheel on Elmer trying to keep forward motion for
steering. Had to back off on throttle when the stern and prop came out of the water (so the
overspeed tip would not take the engine off the line) and then throttle back up when the stern and
prop went back in the water. 8 hours of 'Full Speed Ahead' and the Quartermasters log read 12
miles. BACKWARDS !!!!! on the same trip hit another hurican e off Jamaica. This time we got
to set four sails. I got to help hold the wheel and it was like standing under a warm water fall. I
could barely see the person on the wheel in front of me in the heavy rain. The deck on the starboard
side kept dipping into the waves. The lookout was looking for reefs. GREAT RIDE

said: Anyone around who made the cruise on the Eagle in 1949 and remembers the 'Ship Shake Down'
after visiting several ports? This occured when someone pried open the hatch on the Officers
Private Stock and swiped several cases of canned Lobster Meat. I was the Storekeeper. When they
search our lockers by a suprise announcement I knew I was in trouble. Mine was filled with canned
goods mostly peaches and pears. When asked where my clothes were I told them in the Office File
Cabinet. Nothing further was said but I was worried until I left the ship in New London. On our
first day back many of us single men were given the duty. The Supply Officer asked me to watch the
Gangway and see if anyone left with the lobster meat. Officer and men were bringing their autos
down to the City Dock where we tied up. They were taking their souvenirs and booze off which had
been locked in a hatch. One Officer made several trips down to the hatch and up to the gangway with
wicker baskets. Between each trip I went over and opened the lids and found it to be filled with
butter, hams, etc. He then took them out to the dock and put them in his car. The next day the
Supply Officer asked me if I had found the Lobster Meat. I told him NO, but informed him about the
Wicker Baskets. He quickly told me to keep my mouth shut and forget I ever saw them. I did. Who
ever pried that hatch open sure did a good job on it. I know it must have been very difficult. I
have always thought it went into the Black Market in Europe where they were buying everthing we
could bring them. Anybody out there who wants to confess. I am sure the Statue of Limitations has
expired but I would just like to know how they did it. On12/18/03 Jim

with a cane board the ship, was not what I expected. He always looked young in all the TV segments
I had ever watched. This was something he had always wanted to do, to sail on a square rigger.
When we arrieved in San Diego two days later, Disney gave the crew all free passes to all the
amusement centers and rides. I spoke with him only briefly, and realized that he was in ill
health. He passed away the following year. Having his wish come true, I guess it made it
easier.
