I know he was on the Duane during WWII from 1942-1945 his name was Anthony (Tony Beierle) I did get his service records and know that he received several ribbons and stars. I want to learn more about where he served and with whom. I appreciate any help.

On 12/10/07 for Chaney Walden said:
It is my sad task to inform his shipmates of the 532 EBSR, the USS Arthur Middleton, the USS Aquarius, and the USS Leonard Wood that my uncle Chaney Eugene Walden of Benton, Illinois, passed away on 18 February 2007. He had served in the Coast Guard in WWII, and in the Army in Korea and Viet Nam, and retired as a CWO 3 to take up harness racing. He was proud of his service and his mates and enjoyed attending several reunions. He was buried in Middlecreek Cemetery near Dahlgren, about a mile from his boyhood home, and is much missed by his family and friends. (I put his name in the author's spot to be better seen.) I so far have a very busy life I served on the Duane from 1951-1952 as BM1 and as Chief 1958-1960.I enjoyed all my time aboard.

I would like to thank all of you who attended this years reunion in South Portland. It was an overwellming success. The overlap with the USCGC Campbell ment that both crews met with eachother and shared old times. There were more than one that had served with one another on both ships and told there sea tails. Our next reunion will be in Williamsburg, VA September 18 - 21, 2008. I hope that everyone in the crew will plan to attend. Thank you all again. If anyone has a copy of any of the sailing list's from the 30s to the 80s, please send me a copy so as we might find new crew members. Some of you Yoeman and Storekeppers must have some.

Stan, If the Sept. 2007 Reunion in Portland (only 47 days away) is half as good as the Hull reunion in (06) it will be a time to remember. With all the work involved in putting a reunion together, it is worth it when shipmates participate and have a real good time. Most of us return time and again once we meet old shipmates and make new friendships. As we get older the sea stories get better. See you in Portland!!

Make your reservations by calling the Merry Manor in South Portland, Maine at, 207-774-6151 and tell them that you are comming aboard for the USCGC DUANE REUNION in September. Thank you and have a great Summer and we will see you in the Fall.

Hi Shipmates, June & I (53-54 SnGm) just got back home from an EASTWIND (W279) Reunion in Portland, ME. The site of the Duane (W33) reunion in Sept of 2007 The reunion with 107 shipmates in attendence although not the largest was probably one of the best. The EASTWIND went out of commission in 1968 but we still had 192 people at the banquet. Are we Duane sailors going to let an old Ice Breaker that never home ported in Portland have a larger reunion than us??? Your Leader Stan Barnes was in attendence & I believe he was well received & had a good time. The work involved in putting a reunion together could never be understood unless you take on the task. Lets get behind the Duane Association & Stan & show the ice sailors the Duane can also do it. If the Duane can out do the Eastwind I will buy Stan his first drink and congratulate my old shipmates( if he doesn't beat me he will buy) of the DUANE. See you in Portland. Lee & June

John went to Storekeeper's School in Groton, while I went to Danang to serve on the Point Welcome. Sometime during the early 80's, when I was working in Washington,D.C., I visited with Cliff. Either 'Hotel' straight to the Cup Races or in Bethlehem Steel Yards in Boston. We were on our way to FTG in Gitmo and somehow, some equipment made its way into the reduction gear (months in Boston). Sorry to hear about Duke. Anyone heard from DC2 Chooch McKay? Got to dive on the Duane in the Keys and its eerie and spectacular at the same time. Highly recommend that if you get a chance, DO IT.

I was a QM3 on the Duane from 2/82 through 8/83. I was on board for the great mother ship fire of 1983 and painted several leaves on the bridge as feathers in the crew's hat. Bunch of good guys on that crew, especially the wize guy who talked me into fantail jumping on the mess deck (Joe Sanchez who I watched get his Good Conduct Medal in Boston). The memory of Gene Canal's mustard warning always gives RD3 John 'Depretarier' diPretoro and me a laugh. Tom LaJoie, I remember you and Scott Hammond (who perfected Mitchell's sea gull call) and Chris 'Bud' Stevenson along with 'YAS' John Puza. Frank knew the number of rounds fired and the location of the gunfire support. (Frank had reviewed previous messages huh?) Frank, if you will e-mail me your address, I will get your knife in the mail to you immediately!!! Thanks to all of you who submitted your 'guesses' and there were several of you that were close...but there can only be one winner. Thanks to all who got in touch! It was good to hear from you.. Hey Fella's... Like many of you, I have sat back and waited for everyone else to 'tell the story' of the Duane. However, it's not happening...and she deserves more. I see sites on the Bibb, Andy, etc, but very little on the Duane. When I look for pictures of her, I keep getting the same old snapshots...and I know that there are many more out there. When I look for her history in Viet Nam, I get...that she 'was on Market Time patrol during...blah, blah, blah!' Nothing is said that she was responcible for killing more enemy than any other CG unit assigned, or any other interesting story about her. If you have any pictures of her...I don't care when, or in what era you served...if you will get a copy to me either by mail or e-mail, I will build a site to commemerate her and tell her story... and yours... along with it. Surely...with over 50 years service to our country and bringing us all home safe... there is more to tell than what is being told! Don't you think so?...or have I dranked too much Jack tonight? I hope not!...Let me hear from you... Jim Jones QM2 1966-1968

I didn't have the pleasure of serving on the 'D' but I did serve on the Courageous with CWO Marvin Lang - we spent many hundreds of boring hours in the the control booth u/w lying & telling sea stories (mostly I listened, he lied!). My second tour on Courageous involved a burial @ sea of my friend's ashes. If anyone out there knew him you will be happy to hear that the ceremony was very touching & just what any sailor would want - a single bugler playing taps while he was committed to the sea. A fitting culmination to his sea going career.

My father, Victor Marzinske, served on the Duane out of Boston on the outset of WWll...Doing escourt/sub-patrols from Halifax to Iceland to Ireland in early forties. I believe he was in on the sinking of U-175 with sister ship Spencer. Is there any surving crew members or relatives that can provide a little more info on that event or events of that era? My father passed away a little over a year ago, and spoke of his time on the Duane with such pride. He gave little information, sketchy at best, about his Atlantic crossings. Very little rescue, much recovery. I would appreciate any first hand accounts or records left by others during those perilous times. Thanks in advance.

JP thats a great 'tale' and sounds pretty patriotic..However, as XO of Duane 1967-68 I can attest to the fact that we only fired 102 rounds of 5'38 on the BO-DE River free fire zone. There were 3 secondary explosions, so we hit something. After the gunfire support mission we departed the area enroute Bangkok for R&R. It was a great 4th July for us!!!

I visited the Duane in November of 2000. You all should be proud of her! She sits upright on a white sandy bottom, with her weather deck at about 112 feet below the surface, and her stern to the current. I first descended to the lookout station on top of the bridge, then passed through the superstructure from port to starboard side. I made my way to the stern, then returned forward seeing the aft mast with crows nest still standing, I was able to look into the galley and see 2 dough mixers. My dive came to an end on the bow after I descended into the space under the main gun (which is missing) and ascended the line from the bow. This is an incredible dive and I cannot wait to visit again.

Albright BMC Frank(?)D'Agosta and YNC George Morris -- in the rear its RMC Frankie O'Neil (who was the most lovable man ever known when sober and the devil himself after 10 beers) -- next was BTC John Dugan and then GMC Roy Henley. Dugan and Henley are gone but as far as I know the rest are still causing trouble somewhere. I think this was a changeof command in late summer of '61 just before we went to GTMO. We were all in the CPO qtrs when wewere called back for a photo op. I had a borrowed pair of size 8's on my size 11 feet and had taken them off . If anyone called us to attention I missed it, being barefoot with an at ease posture! MMC Alex Smith and EMC Shaky Jewett didn't bother to come up for the picture. And, I'm sure I missed someone else. If you haven't seen that allomac website, be sure to look it up...

Most of you probably know but if you don't, the Duane is now a very popular dive and fishing site off of Key Largo, FL. She sits in about 130 feet of water. On a flat calm day you can see it while snorkling but if you want to dive it, you'll have a bit of a workout with the currents. A few years ago some local commercial fishermen caught a 16' great white shark in the same area. I was a cox'n at Islamorada when they sunk the Duane and Bibb. I witnessed the sinking of the Bibb but missed the Duane. If you get to Key Largo, there are glass bottom boats that go out to Molasses Reef next to the cutters and I believe you might be able to see them if the visibility is perfect. I almost picked the Duane while at bootcamp but went to the Chase since it was newer. Take care people.

I think he was the first MMCM in the Guard.Used totell me all these sea stories how great the 327's in the firstdistrict were. If you know any thing about him give me a yellthanks...Gary Hodge He had nothing to do with my spelling

I served aboard the Queen Of The Fleet from Nov 81 until Mar 84 as an RD3. Even though she was old by then she rode the seas like a battleship. We rescued a 95 foot ketch off Bermuda in December of 81 in 50 foot seas at a full bell and even though we had to hold on to our racks in ops berthing like there was no tomorrow, she came through the storm with only a few bent ladders to the 01 deck. We got Liberty in Bermuda after escorting the yacht into Hamilton and spent three days drinking and crashing motorbikes! That was a great first patrol. I've already found a few old shipmates here. What a great site, thanks, Fred!
