I was on the Courier in late 1970 until mid 1971 as a SA . Had some great times in New Orleans and Galveston. I still keep in touch with Bruce Creef (lives in Manns Harbor, NC and has 5 children). He hears from Bill Lewis from time to time. I left Courier to go to SK school in Petaluma, Ca. I remember R. Harvey, and his favorite singer, Jerry Lee Lewis and his girl friend Diamond Vega Fay. Smitty in the engine room. Would be great to hear from anyone during my time on Courier.

I was a Courier kid around 1959-60. Had Mrs Tatmun (sp?) for grades 2 & 3. How many kids these days learn Greek mythology in grade school? My dad is Jim Carpenter - he and mom are still kicking around in Anacortes, WA. Even after my own 22 yrs in the CG I still remember Rhodes as the best place I ever lived. Spiro's had the greatest scrambled eggs I've ever tasted. How many other kids got to ride in a landing craft to go out and eat with their dad? We were also there when the Guns of Navarrone was filmed. I've got a bunch of my parent's pictures of their toga parties, bunny- hopping at the club, etc. Greetings to all.

Hi All, My Dad, Bill Donohue, served on the Courier in the early to mid 50s. I know he has reconnected with some of you lately. He has charged me with finding out the pay grade for an E-3 back in 1954. Anybody remember what you pulled in? Oh, I am sure you have all retired as millionaires on your savings from that pay grade but, if you could find time from all the wine-ing and dining to help me out I would appreciate it. Dad had just had a grandson join the Military , I suppose he wants to compare notes.- and Google is going me no good. Fondly, Judy Donohue Hain

Hello everyone - I am a Courier kid. I loved the October 2005 reunion where I met so many people including Lee of the email right before mine. Hi Lee! The 'kids' find being together on the island once again an incomparable experience. We want the 2007 Courier reunion to be on Rhodes. If it isn't, we will go as a group to Rhodes, in addition to wherever the regular Courier reunion is planned. The Courier kids are issuing an invitation to everyone. We want all of you to come to Rhodes too! We love you guys and will really miss your presence if you are not there. I might have been a kid, but I interacted with many of the then-adults. Some are locals who became wives, some were other kids' parents, some were friends with my parents, and some were 'bachelors' whom I and my adolescent girlfriends tittered about and kept a hidden eye on. We are, all of us, kids and adults alike, a very special group. We belong together on the island so please join us and we will all have fun together again. Denise (Weicken) Lajetta 1958-1960

I just received this From Ed Newins:Dave ; February 15 2006 will be the 54th anniversary of the commissioning of the Courier. The ceremony was held in the Bethlehem Steel Ship Yard in Hoboken New Jersey. We all stood at attention in on the 'Flight deck' wearing dress blues and Flat hats. We were all glad to move on board. We had been berthed in the YMCA in Hoboken and eating in a local delicatessen while the ship was being refitted in the shipyard. A few weeks prior to the commissioning we went on a sea trial in the lower New York Harbor and off the NJ coast when the main engine had to be shut down because of a lubrication problem in one of her cylinders. The scuttle butt was a rag was stuffed (deliberately?) in one of the lubricating lines. We had to be towed back to the shipyard. Most of us had been to school at the Naval Air Station in Lakehurst NJ to learn how to handle the barrage balloon we would use to carry our antenna aloft. We had also been to the Philadelphia Navy Ship Yard to attend fire fighting school. After the commissioning we sailed down to Washington DC and were inspected and wished well by President Harry Truman. After spending some time in the Chesapeake we sailed to Norfolk to be degaused then onto (Laguria?) Venezuela. It was during our stop in Venezuela that we had our first problem with the balloon and antenna. During a violent thunderstorm the Balloon started to kite and wrap the antenna around the forward king post. It was a major effort to get the balloon down off the king post. We sailed next to (Cartagena?) Columbia were we spent a few days ,then on to Panama. We sailed through the Panama Canal flying our Barrage Balloon all the way across to the Pacific side. We tied up at the NOB at Balboa. While we were tied to a pier and broadcasting the Canadian Cruiser Quebec on her way home from Korea came in on the opposite side of the same pier. When the crew of the Quebec lowered the gang plank to the pier an arc jumped from the pier to the gangway. We were told to stop what ever we were doing and ordered not to broadcast while tied up to the pier. We did sail out into the Pacific and broadcast from off shore. The scuttlebutt was were going far enough into the Pacific so they could hear us in Korea. I don't know if it was true or not. The question was why the Hell did we go through the Panama Canal? We came back to Balboa and back through the canal and sailed up to Vera Cruz Mexico where we stayed for about a week or more broadcasting. It was then back to Hoboken and the shipyard for some work. We left Hoboken in July and headed for Tangiers No Africa after another quick stop in Norfolk. After a few days in Tangiers we sailed to Naples Italy and stayed there for about a week. We sailed next to Pieraus and after a few days there made our way to Rhodes arriving early August 1952....you know the rest of the story............ Eddie Newins EN3 Plank Owner

Bill Norcross received telephone calls from the family of Dave & Pam Flynn that Pam and their youngest son had an tragic accident on Nov. 10th which took their lives. They were in the process of spreading Daves' ashes into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Oregon. Pam was taking pictures of each person as they were spreading the ashes...lost her footing, fell and was swept away. Her son tried to help and was also swept away by large waves. Evidently the water temp was around 40 degrees. A fishing boat closeby notified the Coast Guard and partisipated in the search & rescue operation. Pam wrote a letter to Shirley & I this summer which contained the following ' we all have a time to go home and nothing can stop that as death is coming for all of us sooner or later, and when it is our time it should be a time of knowing that we're going to a better place where there is no more pain or suffering'. She was speaking of the pain that Dave was going through prior to his death. But we never thought that this would happen to Pam and her son in this fashion. It was so sudden and such a terrible loss for their family so soon after Dave's death.

I wanted to post and say a very big THANK YOU to David Newell, who included a post I made last year about my father Albert S. Hodge Jr. in the current newsletter. I told my family about it, but didn't tell them what was in the post and when it arrived in the mail, it was a very big surprise for them. They send their thank yous as well. It really made my mom smile and cry too. The newsletter has helped some of my father's friend become aware of his death. The people that had served with him had emailed and written some great letters and told some great stories about him that made me laugh and made me miss even more. I thank you David for helping me get in contact with these people, it has really helped me out alot. May 6 of this year will mark the 3rd anniversary of his death. It doesn't get any easier, you just try to live with the loss. Thanks again for this forum and thanks again for the news letter, it means the world to all of us down here in New Orleans. The '04 Reunion aboard the Cruise ship 'Mariner of the Seas' was fantastic. We used about 45 cabins and since we were ducking hurricanes, the 7 day cruise ended up being 9 days. The seas were flat calm. I saw a lot of Courier Boys in the casino every day. Food was fantastioc as was the service. Decor was very special. All had a good time. Going over this list of messages, I still see a lot of old friends: as in CArl Hogan, Gibson ET2 and many others. Less and less of us. Don't miss the next reunion! I came across this site looking for information about the USCGC Courier. My father Al Hodge Jr. served in the Coast Guard and was stationed on the Courier in Rhodes, Greece 1960-1964. I saw that he had made a post in 1998 on here. I regret to announce that on May 6, 2002, my father Al Hodge Jr. died of myocardial infarction, which was a massive heart attack in New Orleans, Louisiana at The V/A hospital. He had asked to be cremated and with the help of the Coast Guard in Biloxi, Mississippi, we were able to grant his wish and have him buried at sea. He retired from the USGC in 1980, after serving 20 years; he became a director of radiology at Chalmette General hospital in Chalmette, Louisiana, 7 miles outside of New Orleans for 10 years. He then worked as an MRI technologist for the next 8 years before he retired. He was still active with his first love of HAM radios. His call letters were WD5CFC. He then got into antique cars and bought 2 of them. A 1957 Chevy Belair convertible and a 1968 Impala, convertible. He and my mother would attend many car shows and travel across Louisiana to enter contests. He made it over to Greece in the summer of 2000 to visit his old stamping grounds with my mother and they enjoyed their visit. The last few years of his life were exhausting for him, as he had suffered complete kidney failure from diabetes and was taking dialysis 3 times a week. His spirits were still high, but the sickness did take its toll on him. I hope i'm not over doing this post here today, but I just miss my father and I remember him telling me stories about the courier and the club that he and some of his buddies would hit in the 1960's and the stories were great. The rest of the family is doing ok. My mom and his wife/widow are staying active by baking Greek pastries for a local reception hall. My sister/his daughter is married with 2 teenage boys. One is in college and the other has just entered high school. She stays busy as a hairdresser. As for me, I followed in the footsteps of my father and have been an x-ray technologist for 16 years now and I play music on the side. I had the pleasure of working and learning from my father in the earlier stages of my career at the hospital. Most of the original crew that he had worked with at the hospital is still there and they talk about him constantly. He is missed by all. So if any of you guys worked with or served with him, please email me. I'd love to hear more stories about those days...Thanks for listening. Al Hodge III

Gary Hozempa: Re: the USCGC Courier while in Chicago tied up at the filtration plant. Gary: You must have been getting on just after me and the rest of the Chicago guys were getting off. What a co-incidence. I wonder if you guys were able to get rid of all the leftover empty beer cans before anyone got too perturbed. The filtration plant was a good place to tie up the Courier. The place was really secure and nobody could get near the ship. That gave us a free hand to do some real training or something. Goodness, time flys, doesn't it?

A pleasant surprise to see this website. I served on the Courier from March through September 1970 as a SA. I joined the Courier in Curtis Bay while she was in dry dock. As we got underway, I recall that cases of beer were loaded into the Damage Controlmen's shack. While underway, each of us were given 2 cans of beer. Some got sick (we had spaghetti). When we got to Yorktown, I recall that we ran into the pier leaving white paint on the dock. I also recall going to Philadelphia Shipyards where we 'manned the rail' and no one paid attention to us! I will always remember getting paid in cash by the QM who had a loaded .45 gun next to him and then playing blackjack or poker on the fantail. I also remember that a FN got busted to FA or FR because he went on leave without permission. He got caught because he gave to the USCG Relief Society and the bosun's mate couldn't find him to give him his card. I also remember that we took on a crewmember in Philadelphia who promptly land in his rack (unpermitted) and smoked a joint. The crew turned him in immediately and we never saw him again. I had a great time on the Courier and recall that all the NCO's and officers were great. When I was stationed in SEA flying Phantoms, I went to the Phillipines and had a wooden plaque made depicting the Courier. I'd love to locate a picture suitable for framing. Thanks. Bob Lowe P.S. Anybody heard of Larry Marcus, another reservist who I went to boot camp w/ at Cape May who was stationed w/ me on the Courier.

It’s sure nice to read about some of the people who served on the Courier. I was a permanent party reservist straight out of boot camp, still wet behind the ears, serving active duty from May 67 through August 67. Her mission then was reservist training, designated WTR410. I came aboard in Buffalo, NY and disembarked on RELAD in Portland, ME after touring most of the major cities on the Great Lakes. We would take the local reserve units on board for two weeks of training. It was a long-hot summer of racial unrest in each city we visited from Detroit to Milwaukee. I recall when in Milwaukee we were confined to the ship due to a town curfew during the rioting. The OM brought the whole party to us on board from the local USO. There are so many great recollections. I can recall an exciting trip through the St. Lawrence Seaway, stopping in Montreal for a week to conduct shipboard tours at Expo 67. Fishing for shark off the fantail in Bar Harbor. And hauling the permanent party’s automobiles up out of the forward hold when we made port. Being so sick on galley duty after a night on the town in Buffalo. I couldn’t make it to the head and barfed down the ladder to the engine room in desperation. Yeah Jerry, after almost 35 years I now confess. I did it! From my recollections, it sounds like it was all fun. But, the work was hard, the watches long and the experience was so rewarding. In a way, I regret that my career track didn’t take me active. Have an enjoyable reunion in Rhodes.

It was nice to see some of the people we knew there, but it was sad to see the changes that had taken place. Would be nice to hear from old shipmates.

I was part of the caretaker crew in Yorktown after the Courier was decom. On board the end of 72 and was the last to go over the rail as she was towed away to the James River fleet in Feb 73. I would like to find others who were there playing monopoly in the ward room.
