I served on the Buttonwood from 79-81. I was known as either the mahalo brother or cookie. I was in touch with the other mahalo brother bra Roth for a while but have lost contact. If anyone knows of his where a bout’s please let me know. I also have re connected with Fred Becker he is doing well. If anyone is interested, there is a program on the military channel called the Coast Guard at war which talks about the Coast Guard involvement in the Vietnam War. About half way through the show they talk about the boat that CO at that time XO Ross Bell was on and how it was air strafe for about an hour by US fighter planes and what happened to him and his crew, very interesting show. I would like to hear from old shipmates.

Ahoy all you old black hull buoy critters...I am putting together a photo album specific to all the 180 class tenders ( I was aboard CLOVER and WOODRUSH) and am looking for some unique pictures of these boats. Pictures of deck/buoy ops, small boat ops, inside the ship and patches are what I am looking for. I can't promise I will use all of them, but when I am finally done, my intentions are to provide a copy free to anyone who wants it, you would just need to pay postage. Thanks mates, looking forward to those pictures.

If anybody's out there in webland give me a hello.

I reported on Buttonwood in Galveston, March of 90 while they were enroute to RefTra Littlecreek. 1 year later we slep'ed with the Papaw. Good times on the old boat. We worked the Mega Borg fire off Galveston in July of 90, what a deal watching a 850 foot ship burn... Have a nice day!

Buttonwood was my first ship. Went aboard in August 1960 and mad a 4 month West Pac returning in December of 60.I was 18 years old when we left and probably 25 when we got back. Man did I grow up on that cruise. I left in Feb of the next year for the Matagorda just across the dock BUT she was leaving for Japan in one week and need crew members. After a taste of Japan on the Buttonwood I knew I didn't want to wait for 9-10 months for another West Pac. Was a good ship and I learned a lot that carried me through a 24 year career retiring in 1982 as a CWO3 BOSN.

I saw some familiar names on here, including mine once or twice... I realize now I probably could have enjoyed my CG duty a lot more if my attitude had been just a bit different. I couldn't see the big picture. I must say, I had a lot of fun, though, and the Buttonwood was where I made some good friends and did a lot of cool things that I can tell my grandkids soon. I've had some contact with Bob Markland, Tony Coniglio, and now, John Harvan. I'd sure like to know what Larry Coates, Steve Belzer, Robert Painter, Jack Dodson, James Shockley, and Jim Fisher are doing these days. AND WHO THE HELL KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO FLOY ROY PATTERSON??? My best memories are the trip to Christmas, Jarvis, and Johnston Islands... the cat eradications on Howland and Jarvis, and the unbelievable diving in the Marshall Islands... especially Kwajalein Atoll. I've never quite been able to explain to someone about the MASS of gooney birds on FFS. If anyone would like some pictures of that time, email me and I'd be glad to send them to you. Sorry, I have no pics of our Fantail Firefly episopes, only good memories. If anyone knows how I can contact LT. Merrill or CPT. Anderson, let me know. I'd like to let them know I'm not in jail and I turned out OK. I've even been married to the same woman for 23 years, have 3 kids, 2 grandkids, an education, and a respectable career. Anyone feel free to email me. Aloha.

I served on Buttonwood as the QM1 when she was recommissioned in in 1994. Our crew, under the command of Chris Conklin (an exceptional example of leadership), had the pleasure of sailing Blackhaw form San Fran to Curtis Bay, Maryland. We decommed Blackhaw, crossdecked and commissioned Buttonwood - I think for her second or third time. We were all in awe at the 'new' bow thruster, improved berthing, etc. What a ride. And the trip to and from was so much fun. (NOTE: my only regret is I didn't take more pictures. Do a favor for your future self and capture the good times, you'll be glad you did). While I was there, I had the honor and pleasure of serving with some incredible people - Chad Smith - computer wiz that wrote a DOS program that cut our work significantly, Randy Dennis - always had a way to lighten the mood and exceptional at chartwork(... back when we really needed charts), Larry Santos - exceptional chef, Jason Mosher - a great QM (but I swear he broke a limb about every other month!) Rich Hildebrandt - his SK shop was always a place to vent, Roy McCormes - the first Doc to ever suggest I may have an ulcer and counsel me on stress management, Ryan Trudo - who saved me from certain confinement in a Mexican prison, Jeff Shield - you could eat off of any surface in his ET shop. Some honorable mentions include Dan Pickles, Tim Castle, Sean O'Brien, Kurt Lowman, Tracy Wannamaker, Judy Swanson, Scott Cliat, YN2 Martin, YN2 Hammett. My mentor on three different ships (Midgette, Blackhaw, Buttonwood), and good friend Frank Parent. These are just a few of the folks that touched my life and made my time on the Buttonwood so much more rewarding. These people taught me so much about life and leadership etc., and I will always be thankful. Ironicly, the most disturbing moment in my career happened on Buttonwood too - but thats a page for the LDC. If you are on a ship now, despite the hard work, long days, lack of time, money and resources - I assure you that one day you'll remember and treasure those times and people.

Just in case any of you are not aware of it, the Buttonwood was decomissioned on June 28th, 2001 at 10 AM at Yerba Buena Island, SF, CA. She then was comissioned as a 'Battleship' in the navy of the Dominican Republic and from one photo I have looks quite impressive. May she and the men who man her find calm seas and following winds for many more years. An additional note. Recently I have become active as a docent on the SS American Victory, which is a partially refurbished Victory Ship (WW II, Korea and Viet Nam ) moored in Tampa, Florida. After my tour in the CG I joined the Merchant Marine and sailed on several USNS and commercial merchant ships including two similar Victory ships during the unpleasentness in Viet Nam. Should any of you visit Tampa I hope you might consider a day roaming about on her decks. The American Victory may not have a round hull but there is a distinct feeling of bygone days you will get while climbing the ladders and viewing the crews quarters.

Jim, JD went with me and my wife Gerry after he was retired and the Buttonwood went to Galveston. We kep him for many years until we had our first child and it was mainly due to he was getting very old and non tolerate of children. Gave him to another Coastie in Coinjock and last I heard he lived out a good long life until his passing back in the early 90's. As far as I go, retired in 96 and moved around a few doing telcom until the bubble burst. Ended up buying a house in WV and Rich wilke came out from ND to work for me. I got laid off but Rich is still down the road from me. Still married to the same old girl from KY and we have 2 daughter (18 and 13). Currently I am working in Iraq and have been here off and on since Nov 04. May make it another year or so and call it quits. Currently working as a Project Manager on a large facility. Saw Rich Wilke about 2 weeks ago, right before I headed back. We went to the shooting range and jsut hung out. It was and has been nice to see him occasionally and to know that him and his family are doing good. Take care

If any of that crew is around and capable of communicating in print or script, (I’m assuming these skills were developed through the years) let’s get in touch. Reading the note about pink anchors reminded me (I don't understand the connection) of the time the Captain decided to drop the hook in the lee of Lihua Rock, which is a crescent shaped reminent of a long dormant volcano at the north end of Nihau. The chart said the depth was reasonable, perhaps fifty or one hundred feet so we dropped the starboard anchor. . There was no bottom, or at least we never touched it. The cable ran out one length after another and the DC1 tried to apply the brake. It finally worked with about six or eight cable lengths hanging straight up and down. . The windlass took several hours to raise that much weight with firehoses played out and water being sprayed on the motor to keep it cool. . I am a bit fuzzy on the exact length but when the chain stopped we were at the last 100 feet or so. I guess if Captain Harris had lost it he would have not gotten his promo to CDR and the command of Sand Island the next year.

Acutally have made it one of my goals to get the best people I can and my best came from the Guard, currently have 3 others from the Guard that work for me spread out over 3 States. If Teddy England reads this, beside Rich Wilke working for me, I also have Larry Ames that is working for me, you may remeber him as the MKC from the Jarvis that helped us out when we were racing the old Bette the bomber. Everyone else drop a line some time letting me know how you are.

Anyway, would like to hear from anyone I might know that was on during 87-88 (or anyone just wanting to share a story). I'm now a QMC working in Boston. Hello to all the Buttonwood crew from the last days of the Honolulu homeport. Bell (best skipper ever), Fred Lane, the Z man, Doc Jones, Mr. Green, Richarson, Larry Dodge, Garry Smith, way to many to mention in this short space. Great trips to Samoa (never forget the 100's of cases of Olympia beer that we couldn't give away-Sadie Thompas Lounge at the Rainmaker singing Craw Dad Hole, riding bike back to boat in total darkness and blinded by Wild Turkey, drinking Gin with Gary Smith on beach looking at fine freindly tourist). Who of us will ever forget the trek to work the range light with the batteries, structure, boards, cooler of beer, guided by a local over the quicksand, etc. Diving off the Matilda from the MSD at Pago, Pago (had to be the best tour in the Guard, those luck MSD crew). It is memories and people like those that I ahve for the Buttonwood that made all the bad times in the Guard well worth everthing.

I was stationed on the Buttonwooc 5/59--5/60 Had some great trips around the Pacific. I still want to return to some of those islands. Spent some time in dry dock 5/59. Spilled bouy paint down someones pants while pulling bouys. Remember I had to hide out for a while. Our cook Bennie made great raisin jack. We had bad weather one trip and several gallons blew up in the hole. We had to flush out the hole before inspection. The autoclave didn't work and it stored CC and VO until it ran out. Then Bennie would hit the Listerine and Coke while making a new batch of raisin jack. Had a CBM that would kick your ass for whistling on the ship. Only bosn's and queers, he said whistled on a ship. Had a cable break on one of the islands while tring to pull bouy off the reef. I thought we were goners with that cable whipping around our heads. Had a engine room fire at sea once but it was dealt with and we kept going. Had one hell of a storm in 59. I remember that round bottom and ice breaking bow made for some wild rides. We had some great island parties drinking coconut joy juice and a green beer made in Honolulu but I can't remember the name of it. Anyone remember any of this drop a e-mail.

It was a great goup of folk who knew how to work and how to play. I learned many positive and important lesson from that crew that have served me well, even if we were all politically incorrect (remember the camping trip to Kauai).
