Hi again, I served on the Burton Island from October 68’- September 69’. My 1st assignment on the BI was in the Boiler room. Later I was moved to B2 engine room. After Operation deep freeze (think we got back in April) I and others tore out all the asbestos out of the smoke stack. I may Hi to fellow shipmates, have this wrong as I also served on the Staten Island and possibly tore out the asbestos on that ship instead. Proabalities are it was the BI though because I went to engineman school in Sept than to the SI. Anyway I have Asbestosis which I believe was caused by jobs I did as an Engineman or while I worked on boilers before going to B2, while stationed on Icebreakers. If you could possibly remember anything that could help me I’d much appreciate it. Please email me at hoggy25@comcast.net or feel free to call me at (425)761-2725. Hope life has been good for you and your families all these years. Thanks, Steve

I came out of basic training @ Alameda, CA and ended up as a plank owner when the USCG took over the BI from the Navy in Seattle the winter of 66. Started out on the deck force & worked there during the yard overhaul in Long Beach, CA. I started striking radar 3 days out on the first trip south with Operation Deepfreeze 68. Upon the return I was sent to VN and 82' WPBs. After 17 moths in the RVN I returned to COTP Seattle as a BM2 running S&R on 40 footers to finish up my 4 year hitch. Then got out to go back to college. Anyone who remembers me please send an email to renew contact and catch up.

My dad Dennis Schmidt was part of operation deep freeze in the navy in 63,64, and 67. He passed away in 2001 of lung cancer. The main reason I stumbled across this page is because I'm looking for information on a peak in the Queen Maud Mountains that is named after him, 'Schmidt Peak.' If any one can help me with this, or knew my dad and wants to share stories or pictures, please email me. Thanks!!!

I sailed on the Northwind between '75 and '77 ....... For a number of years I've been thinking of going back to visit these great places. I just found a terrific deal on cruises to the Arctic and Antarctica. Celebrity Cruises has a polar class Russian icebreaker on a 13 day cruise to the Arctic (on 9/4) and 11 day cruises to Antarctica (on 10/25 and 11/6). I've shopped prices and these cruises look like a great deal. Since the cruises take place soon it looks like Celebrity is offering last minute deals. The price is roughly $5,000 per person (includes all food, drinks, excursions, etc.). Similar cruises with other companies go for about twice that amout. The icebreaker has zodiacs for exploring and even two helicopters that take passengers out to view the area. I got this information from Celebrity's website (www.celebrity.com). I called the number they show (866-973-8466) to get the price information. Anyway, I'm seriously considering taking one of these cruises and thought I'd pass the information on to those of you who may be interested too.

He died very young in his life (age 42) from an accidental electrocution while repairing a rental home. He has an 11 year old grandson that he would have loved to spoil. I took the very last trip on the B.I. four times! I couldn’t wait to get off the boat (when I wasn’t restricted), now I realize some of my most cherished memories are from that time. Came on as an FA then I made SR (whoops), then SA, then SN. I remember hanging literally horizontal on the overhead pipes on the secured weather deck while taking 30-35 rolls in the Weddle Sea with waves of water spraying us. It was also pretty fun to hang out in Ice con when we took some big rolls. I see a lot of my shipmates (and Mast Rep) here and I hope you’re all well. Surprisingly enough, I retired from the CG in 97, and now I’m an elementary school teacher here in Seattle. I’ve talked to a few of you but drop me a line when you get the time.

Funny how memories come rolling back. I've been thinking alot about the young men and women who now serve our country. It takes me back to my youth and to my many shipmates who served our country when it was our turn. It was a period in our lives when so many things were changing and being military was not the 'in thing'. Protest banners met us in N.Z. and people looked at us with a wary eye at home. We even got the 'Yankee Go Home' in Canada. But we were an island onto ourselves and I could always count on my mates. I'm proud to have served with you, my shipmates. I would not want to change any part of my life aboard the 'B.I.' Served from Feb. 72 to sometime in 1974. Anyone out there remember our bus ride from Achorage to Seward for our first billet aboard the B.I.? I was a deck ape S.A. I left as a BM3. Everyone called me 'JP'. I've made contact with a few shipmates by using the web-sites. Thanks to you mates who have made this possible. I hope to see you all at a future reunion or hear from anyone out there.

I can vividly remember sitting at the teletype in my 9-5, m-f job at group Duluth MN with 14 months left on the tour, seeing the orders come for the Burton Island en route Antarctica for operation deep-freeze 71, and wondering what had I done to deserve this? However the memories of that 14 months, the guys in the radio room (Larry, Cuz, Rick, Fred and Mark), sliding down Mt Juneau and chasing penguins have lasted a lifetime. I still have, though not displayed, the sheepskin and llama & Alpaca rugs and various other worthless to all but me memorabilia. As I left for the last time, I blew attention on the loudspeaker with my bosun's pipe and anounced 'now Haley is away for the last time!' Went to YBI and left the gaurd from there. Regards to all... I am enquiring about what ships participated in Operation Deepfreeze 1961. I am particularly interested in any ships which visited Port Lyttleton, New Zealand in November and/or December 1960 and returned to Port Lyttleton about the same time in 1961. Any assistance would be much appreciated as there seems to be very little text on Operations available on the internet.

Aboard the BI from '76- DECOM. Made 4 'last trips'. Arrived as an ET striker; left as a second class. Worked in a great shop- worked with some great CIC, radio crews and quartermasters. Loved the BI; had great times- but also paid some dues. Was excited about going to my next assignment, but cried during the decommissioning. I had been part of a 'tight' crew on a 'squared- away' ship. But the district spent as little as possible on her as we 'moth-balled' her. She was a rusty can, welded tight while we had our dress uniforms on for the decommissioning ceremony.By this time, most of the crew was TAD- there was only a handful of us left who had done at least 3,4 deployments. Looking back, they could've at least given us some paint to spruce her up one last time. Anyhow, got out after 4- proud to have served my country on a 'can do' ship. Best wishes to all.

Aboard the B.I. from April '59 to Feb '61 as an ET. Boarded in Long Beach for departure to the Panama Canal and Greenland. 1960 was Oeration DeepFreeze 60 and Operation Chipper off the coast of Chile and Peru. Final cruise was to Point Barrow the summer and Fall of 1960. We then went into the PSNS at Bremerton for a major overhaul. An early out did not allow me to see if the roll stablizers ever worked.

Ahoy B.I. alumni!!! I served on the B.I. from Feb.73 to May 75 as FNEM/EM3. Made 2 North trips and 1 South. I especially remember Christmas Day of 1974; we were coming back from McMurdo and hit the worst storm ever. The old B.I. was 'pitching and rolling' and 'rolling and pitching' like only she could. The waves were breaking over the superstructure. I was the duty EM that day. Everybody was sick and Christmas carols were being piped throughout the ship. I'll never forget laying on the deck, throwing up in a bucket in between singing choruses of Silent Night and Deck the Halls!!! Those were the days !!! SEMPER B.I. !!

Made the last trip in 78 and the one before, and the one before that. Yeah, 2 years worth. But it was mostly a good time, except for the first few days joining the ship right out of boot camp in Long Beach in October 76, and chipping paint in the chain locker. I wondered what the hell I'd gotten myself into. But after a south trip I was a BI veteran. I was an SA and after that chain locker business and 6 more months of painting and cleaning, and painting and cleaning, and doing pots and pans I decided to strike for storekeeper. I was one of the last people off the ship and finished the guard at CG12 District San Francisco. Left the CG SK1 in 1980. Met lots of good folks, unfortunately I haven't seen or heard from them in 20 years.

Served as XO from 1970 to 1972, and, as luck would have it, returned as CO from 1975 to 1977. With seven trips in my log, there are too many great stories to let go untold. Fortunately, thanks to Greg Reel and Mike Bonner, we have an association of Coast Guard and Navy crewmembers that provides the perfect 'ship's rail' for telling our sea stories. The 1997 reunion was the best operation of its kind I have experienced. I would encourage as many of you who can do so, be sure to attend our 1999 reunion. Greg has the details. And if Stumpy Garrett attends, I'll give him another shot at putting a pie in my face!
