The week the ship went to Vietnam, I was going on Liberty and I was taking a shower, slipped on a bar of soap, and broke my back. They took me off in a stretcher and that was the first time I ever saw an admiral -- laying in a stretcher. He told me not to salute lying down! You guys took off for Vietnam and I took off for Brighton Marine. Sorry I missed the trip!

The last week of January to the first week of February this year I returned to Vietnam with some fellow Vets from the Reno, NV Vet Center. We went from the DMZ to Vung Tau Harbor. Dramatic changes to 'Nam saw no 'war damage' except at the My Lai battle site. My Lai is kept that way on purpose. Vietnam looks as if the 'war' never even happened. Vung Tau is know fast becoming one of the places to go for tourists! It has some great beaches that some say resemble Hawaii. Da Nang & Phu Quot are known for there SCUBA diving areas. 'Nam may've 'sucked' the 1st time but the 2nd was worth doing.

LONG TIME SINCE THEN, MANY OF OUR SHIPMATES HAVE PASSED OVER THE BAR, BUT OTHERS MEET EVERY 4 YEARS AT THE CUTTERMAN'S REUNION IN PORTLAND MAINE TO REKINDLE MEMORIES AND SEA STORIES FROM LONG LONG AGO. Reading this list hs brought back a few names that have hidden in the chain locker of my years. 'BMC' Jim Jones? Do you still have your record collection? I was sorry to read about Phinney. He was a 'hell raiser.' I saw Gene Townsend's name and Les Parritt. I saw Les during my second tour. I was on an 82' that met up with a white one and he was on deck. Nice to know Joe Veno has come of age with computers. Rat Rueli is still stroking. Is he playing the drums? Stan Frank lost more hats at sea than anyone else I know. Howard Devane? Wow, we spent two days keeping Howard from croaking when he drank too much 151 Ron Rico. Has anyone heard from Norm Vignault, or the Garies, Jones or Rogers, or Billy Heiselman? Boatswain Al, Bill Thomas, Bill Weiners? Nice to know this place exists. I'll check back. Thank you, Mike.

On11/29/05 BMC JIM JONES USCGR said:
There's been humors and discussions over what ever happened to the 'Dirty B'. Below is a small history and final disposition of the cutter..................................... Ship's history: The Barataria was homeported in Portland, ME, from 1 August 1949 to January 1968 and used for law enforcement, ocean station, and search and rescue operations in the Atlantic. She patrolled the America’s Cup Race, at Newport, RI, in September, 1962. When the Cuban Missile Crisis developed in October, 1962, the Barataria was conducting an ocean station patrol on Ocean Station Echo, in the shipping lanes east of Cuba. The Barataria then made contact with a Soviet freighter transporting a cargo of missiles and the cutter was ordered to shadow the freighter and await the arrival of a US Navy warship which would conduct the boarding. The cutter remained at battle stations, Condition 2 and repeatedly attempted to establish communications with the Soviets. All attempts failed. A US Navy destroyer out of Norfolk arrived and the Navy crew conducted the boarding of this Soviet vessel.** Barataria won the Commander Eastern Area Gunnery Excellence Award in 1963 and the Military Readiness Award in 1965. On 1 April 1967 the Barataria departed her homeport of Portland, Maine to join four other cutters as 'U.S. Coast Guard Squadron Three' destined to patrol the coastline of South Vietnam and prevent the infiltration by communist forces attempting to resupply the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese units in the south. The cutters arrived in the combat zone in early May. She was assigned to Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group, U.S. Seventh Fleet, the Barataria with her 163 officers and men became an integral part of Operation Market Time. Barataria set a fast pace of effectiveness during her deployment in Vietnam waters. Underway 83 percent of the time, the cutter cruised over 67,000 miles without a major mechanical or electrical failure. Keeping a close watch on all moving craft in her surveillance area, Barataria detected, inspected, or boarded nearly 1,000 steel hulled vessels traversing her area, any one of which could have been a trawler trying to sneak supplies to the enemy. The Barataria was called upon many times to use her main battery against shore-based enemy troops who were aggressively engaged with allied forces. Representative of the high state of readiness and training of the cutter's men is the fact that U.S. Army spotter planes reported all rounds on target, never once falling out of the target area. On one mission three direct hits were cored on point targets which had been spotted by aircraft. She returned to the US on 12 January 1968 and was reassigned to San Francisco. She was used for law enforcement and search and rescue duties in the Pacific. On 24 March 1968, she sustained an engine-room explosion off Unimak Island. From 21 to 27 May 1969 she rescued the crew and stood by the Peruvian M/V Yavari 960 miles southwest of San Francisco, CA; the vessel sank before a salvage tug could arrive. She was homeported in San Francisco until August of 1969 when she was decommissioned. After being decommissioned, the Barataria was sold for scrap to N.W. Kennedy Ltd. In Vancouver, BC.

Time to start rounding up the Barataria Vietnam Vets for the Cutterman's reunion that will be held in Portland Maine in August 2006. Our last reunion we had 23 shipmates attend at that time out of a ship's roster of around 130. Unforunately a few of our shipmates have passed over the bar since the last reunion in 2002. Those shipmates were Bill Heelan, Eric Brackett, Syl Mrozek, Bob Bubeck, and Terry Black. Hopefully with assistance from others that have attended the last reunion, we can all help in contacting others for the 2006 Cutterman's reunion. Also other Barataria shipmates besides the Vietnam vets are encouraged to join the Cutterman's Association. Contact point is- - -Larry Minott- - -cuttermansprez@aol.com and Wes Splettstoesser- - -wesslpetts@msn.com- - - The Cuttermans Association also involves shipmates from other cutters from the Portland area over the years. We have a great time over that weekend and everyone has plenty of sea stories to tell.

Does anyone remember the name of the electricians mate that fell into the electircal board and was subsequently electricuted. Also I am trying to make contact with members of the crew that were on the Barataria during at least one very bad storm I believe that was in the north Atlantic where the Captain came over the intercom and told the crew that he was concerned that they would survive the storm at which point the Captain begain to say prayers ove the intercom. This is very time sensitive information as the veteran I repesent/yur ship mate is suffering from a very serious form of cancer and he can not work and all of his income has been cut off.If you are aware of either or these incidents and most importantly if anyone remembers the name of the coasty who lost his life please respond immediately. Hello Shipmates. I have just posted another picture of the USCGC Barataria tied up at the old Maine State Pier about circa 1963. This picture was from a post card that I either picked up aboard ship or somewhere in Portland. Some of you may have one like it, but if don't, you have one now. I have visited Portland many times over the past few years and this year I finally made it to the top of the municipal parking garage to get a good view of Commercial Street. Hard to believe what it looks like now and what it looked like in the 60's.

Though primarily aimed at the 66-68 crew, all crewmembers of the Big B are welcome to receive it. Please contact me at my email address if you are interested. It will be mailed out hopefully 2 - 3 times a year. Please let me know of any of the other crewmembers who sailed with us that I can contact. Again it's free. No solicitations. Was just looking through the comments of some of the Barataria's old crew members. I noted one indirectly from me, via Bill Pyne (ex-RM CGC Chambers, ca. Korean War, a friend and co- worker from RCA Chatham/WCC; he had me in the crew of the B from 57 to 60. My 'remember' ain't so good anymore but I believe it was from 58 to 60. Came aboard from NIK/NJN Argentia where I was RM3 for that season's very short Ice Patrol. Before that I was RM3 on the Cook Inlet, right after Radio School. Robert Ward was RM1 on the Cook when I got there (there was no Chief as I recall). It surely brought back some old memories to read the comments from other guys who sailed in the 'Dirty B' over all those years she served Uncle Sam's Coastal Protective Association. I was only a one- enlistment Coastie and 1956-60 was a long time ago, but I still remember some of the names I saw here today. Hope to see some of the old gang at another Cuttermens Reunion. The ship is shown in full dress and looks good after a fresh paint job before leaving Portand Maine State Pier. We were there to earn a 'R' for Readiness and just happend to be on location during the blockade. If you look closely at the navy ship docked astern, you will see red lead from repairs that were made to that ship after ramming a Cuban gunboat. Made for a lot of interesting talk at the EM club that evening. After our stay in Gitmo we departed for Kingston for R&R and a little more Red Stripe. The shot was taken by David Puffer who made me a copy and has been hidden in an old sea bag for some forty years. Take a look and enjoy.

I've recently obtained a collection of newspaper clippings from the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. For $25 they sent me all the Barataria artilces from 67 and 68, from rumors of the B's assignement to Vietnam, to our mysterious departure, our arrival in the war zone, the turnover in Alameda, our return to Portland Municipal Airport, and the subsequent explosion and fire in Alaskan waters. There are several good photographs with the articles including a nice one of the ship's departure only a few yards from Maine State Pier. One article relates that the Maine Senate had passed a resolution on our return (this is the first I've heard of the resolution), expressing thanks to the crew of the Barataria. The article reads, in part: (Quote) The Senate expressed to the officers and men of the cutter, 'The grateful appreciation of the people of the State of Maine on the occasion of the completion of their tour of duty in Vietnam and their return to their home port of Portland.' The Senate order praised the crew members, 'for a job well done in the defense of freedom for their home shores,' (Unquote). If you'd like a set of these articles, contact the newspaper's library at P.O. Box 1460, Portland, ME 04104.

I made RD2 on the Barataria's Vietnam tour. (My previous unit was the Cook Inlet, another Portland AVP.) I was transfered the day before the B left from Portland. (I went back to the Cookie Cutter after our return from Alameda.) Vietnam, or more accurately returning from Vietnam, was quite a shock to me. Though no one ever used the term to describe it, I suffered PTSD. It's taken me quite a while to get over it, but now I can look back on my 4 years, 3 months, and 11 days calmly. It was an education. I've recently communicated with Doug Crowell, reminiscing about the chess tournament held during the 'nam cruise. He and I played for the championship--best two out of three. It went the full three games; because he was officer material, the games were played in the luxurious and rarified atmosphere of the ward room. I always imagined that the other officers ribbed him over losing to an enlisted man. (Hey Doug, did they needle you about that?) I don't remember if the ship's daily bulletin announced the results, but if it did, I'd love to have a copy. Anyways, since then I've led an interesting and adventurous life. I attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where I still live. Twenty-five years ago, I co-founded a local tenants union which successfully sued to improve living conditions. Since then, I've had a close relationship with the Athens legal community in general, and with the local office of Legal Services, (they represented us in court), in particular. I've done extensive volunteer work with the U.S. Forest Service, living summers in fire lookout towers in the Rockies and Cascades. I've volunteered with the Bureau of Land Management as a River Ranger on the Colorado River in Westwater Canyon in the hight desert of eastern Utah, and did a back-country road inventory for them in the western foothills of the Big Horn Mts. in Wyoming. I've traveled extensively throughout the U.S., but mostly in the western states. For cash, I house/pet sit. Lastly, I'm looking for a supply of Barataria postcards. I don't know that any ever were produced, but I have a copy of an old Cook Inlet postcard which I purchased aboard that unit. I figure if they made one for the C.I., they probably made similar for every cutter. I'd like to hear from my old Barataria CIC compatriots or anyone who has a fond remembrance of me. E.K.

With some modification (to make it an 'open' letter), I've decided to post the following Email at this site I sent to 'Frank' - in hopes others may enjoy reading it... Hello Frank. Thanks for responding. You must have come on board the USCGC Barataria (WAVP-381) as I was leaving. My tour of duty was involuntarily extended one cruise to give the Coast Guard time to find my replacement. They were short on Quartermasters in the 1st Coast Guard District at that time. ...broke my heart to be extended...last trip was to Bermuda, and they even had to pay me extra for that one! HAHAHA I also take this opportunity to salute ALL those who EVER served on board the Barataria from the time she served as a Navy Seaplane Tender during World War II - part of that time in the Gulf of Latie - until her final days in Japan where she was decommissioned and, sadly, recycled into automobiles and razor blades. I regret not remembering Chief Dorr. I'm one of those who has never been good with names. Perhaps I can blame that on the Florida sun baking my brain over all these years since our Barataria days. lol But I do remember a few people, and especially all those 33-38-days-at-sea ocean station patrols I went on, all 21 one of them. How can one forget being a thousand miles at sea for so long! I also remember studying some of the history of the Barataria while I was aboard her. One thing that made a lasting impression...don't ask me why...was her length. She wasn't 311' long...she was 310' 9-1/2' long. But where I slept (in the forward most berthing compartment up near the bow) her length really didn't matter...it was her flat bottom in rough seas that made a more lasting impression on me...being tossed out of my bunk onto the deck! (O: I also remember being at the helm during two trips through the Cape Cod Canal, one trip up the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal to the 'yards' for dry dock overhaul, a trip to load ammo while in sight of the Statue of Liberty, two trips to GITMO (Guantanimo Bay, Cuba), and a trip to see the first 'LAND HO!' Christopher Columbus saw, which we approached while on the same course his ship was on, and at the same time of day...at dawn. What memories! When steaming in calm seas (which were rare in the North Atlantic) we would have contests at the helm to see who could get her (the 'B') to stay steady on course for the longest distance without touching the helm. I don't want to brag, but I usually won those contests. The 'B' responded beautifully to her helm! She was a real lady! I believe it was my love for the 'B' that inspired my 'touch' at that helm. Whenever we were in what was called 'restricted waters', I was called to take her helm. I also recall one night (graveyard shift) while steaming toward an ocean station and in calm waters, with the OD (Officer of the Deck) apparently napping in the captain's chair (that sure was a 'no no' we never discussed!), we decided to do a 360 degree circle...and nobody else but the watch crew was the wiser! What a chance we took...but what fun! I also recall the 'B' taking a 57 degree roll while we were on one of those ocean stations. The seas were building and we only had one shat online. The role came when we attempted to make a 180 degree course change and steam back toward the opposite end of the ocean station. The captain came flying onto the bridge, and the other shaft was immediately brought online! There were other exciting times...one when Bennett (another QM) and I were enjoying 'Swim Call' while in the Gulf Stream on Ocean Station Echo. Someone yelled 'Shark! Shark!', so we swam back to the ship and started up the rope ladder. Bennett climbed up first. When my feet cleared the water, I looked back...saw the shark as it was veering away from the ship's hull (probably no more than 10' away)...and because of the size of that shark (one flip of the tail and I would have been swallowed!), I've never swam in salt water again! I also remember steaming far enough North along the Eastern shore of Upper Canadian (after an Ocean Station Bravo trip) and witnessing the exciting Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). It was winter, and extremely cold. Most of the time we were that far North it was also very eery, because one couldn't clearly identify the horizon...couldn't tell when the ocean ended and the sky began...there was nothing for the eye to see but blue-grey everywhere - except for the pack ice and occasional iceberg. Chipping the ice off the Barataria with wooden mallets to keep her from becoming top heaven and possibly capsizing was no fun either...VERY cold! I also recall seeing one iceberg that had an almost perfectly shaped half moon hole in the middle of it. That berg was so big and that hole was so large I believe we could have sailed the mighty 'B' right through it! Obviously we kept our distance because we knew 7/8ths. of icebergs are under water. Shall I bore you with three more sea stories? (O: While steaming toward an ocean station our first night from port the lookout on the flying bridge screamed down to the bridge, 'There's a big bird flying around up here, with no head!!!' At first we thought he was just kidding, but his second cry got our attention. The O.D, Coxswain and I stepped outside the bridge and, just as the lookout had said, we all saw this rather large bird flying in a circle around the ship...and it no head! That is, until someone finally shone a light on the bird...a large barn owl! Evidently the owl had taken up nest on board the ship, and stayed with the B as she sailed out to sea! I also remember the 'B' being part of a search and rescue task force offshore from GITMO. A Navy pilot had ejected at sea and we were assigned a particular grid to search. This was during the time when Fidel Castro had recently become the leader of Cuba, and 'hot ships' (those ships which had as their last port of call in an 'Iron Curtain' country) were sailing to and from Cuba. Our search began late in the afternoon, but now it was night. Radio silence had been called for so communications to and from the command vessel could always be on the ready. But no matter. Who were we, compared to all those Navy vessels and aircraft? We didn't expect our assigned search area to be near the pilot's ejection path, nor did we anticipate any other ships to enter our grid. A brief explanation is in order. All US military vessels had certain visual codes for communicating with each other, either by semaphore, flashing light or flag hoist. But there was another set of codes which all ships used in international waters. This latter code was designed to overcome language barriers. One such example is the Morse code signal, 'SOS'. Back to the search at sea... I was the QM on duty at the time. To our surprise another vessel was spotted off our starboard stern (that's 'back right' to any land lubbers! hahaha). She was on a course which would have caused her to cut across that section of our search grid. Because it was night and the method of communication with her would be by flashing light, I manned the signal light -- with instructions to 'contact that other Navy ship' and see why she was in our area. Accordingly, and using US military code, I signaled the other vessel. No response. I signaled again. CIC (Combat Information Center...located behind the 'B's' bridge) reported the ship had 'stopped dead in the water'. We didn't find out why she had stopped until we back in port in GITMO the next afternoon. The P.A. wasn't used. The officer who had been the OD the night before came to me personally, to accompany him to the captain's stateroom. Uh oh! We stepped through the portal, turned slightly to our right to face him, and came to a brisk attention. He was seated behind his desk, with the X. O. on his right and another officer (don't remember who) seated to his left. The conversation went something like this... Captain: 'Carrin, I understand you tried to communicate with another ship last night during our search. Is that right?' Me: 'Yes Sir.' Captain: 'Tell me about it...from start to finish.' Me: 'Yes sir. Another ship was spotted off our starboard stern, sir...and because of radio silence I was instructed to use the signal light to make contact with her to find out why she was about to enter a section or our search grid, sir.' Captain: 'Was there any response?' Me: 'No sir. I signaled a few times, but then CIC told the bridge the other shipped had stopped dead in the water, sir. So we assumed (remember that word, 'assume'?) the Navy ship realized where she was headed, sir...and just stopped.' Captain: 'But it wasn't a Navy ship, Carrin. It was a Russian freighter. You want me to tell you how I know she was a Russian freighter, Carrin? I'll tell you how I know. It seems the signal you sent, thinking she was a US Navy Man'O'War vessel, and using US Military code, thinking you were asked her to identify herself by asking in code language 'What ship', but since she was NOT a US Navy Man'O'War vessel, Carrin, the signal she read, which was from the International code, told her 'YOU SHOULD STOP YOUR ENGINES IMMEDIATELY.' Me: 'I didn't know she wasn't a Navy ship, sir...' Captain: 'Well, the captain of that ship contacted Havana, Cuba...and Havana contacted Moscow, Russia...and Moscow contacted Washington, DC...and Washington contacted the Admiral of the Navy...and that admiral contacted the Coast Guard Commandant, who contacted the Admiral of the 7th Coast Guard District in Miami, who PERSONALLY contacted ME! Now, how do you feel about THAT, Carrin!?' Me: 'It makes me feel kinda sick, sir!' Well, the long and short of it was, no other action was taken, except I was quite sharply advised to be more careful next time! For several days thereafter I wondered why I hadn't become a Yeoman or Storekeeper instead of a Quartermaster! I also recall a time when we had just relieved another cutter (in rough seas...we never actually made eye contact with her). Then later that afternoon a shipmate began suffering what was thought to be a ruptured appendix. Wouldn't you know it...this was one time we didn't have a ship's doctor on board for a Northern patrol...just 'doc', a 1st Class Hospital Corpsman who had been on the 'B' for umpteen years! We radioed the other cutter to steam toward us (and us toward them) so we could transfer the shipmate. When we rendezvoused with the other ship the seas were quite rough, a 'number 7' sea if memory serves me correctly (the roughest being a 'Number 9'). The plan was to steam ahead of the other cutter, lower one of our 26' lifeboats over the side, where it was to make a sweeping 180 degree and come alongside the other cutter for the transfer. The winds were really howling, enough so that apparently the men handling the falls (forward and aft lines that lower the boat over the side of the ship) could not hear the commands clearly. The forward falls let go, but the aft didn't. This resulted in everyone in the boat being dumped into the sea...except one man who managed to hold on to one of the lifelines. The real problem was, the patient had been strapped into a metal carrier basket! But thank God for 'doc' having the forethought to strap a couple of lifejackets around the top of that basket! It took both ships about 30 minutes to retrieve everyone. Thank God it was not in the dead of winter! The water was cold enough, but had it been winter, all of those men would have perished from hypothermia! But all were saved...we resumed course back to our ocean station...the other cutter had a doctor on board and the patient was operated on, successfully. ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL! Well now...I certainly didn't intend to share all this with you! Oh well...I guess those 'old days' and varied experiences just came rolling back into memory! There is much more I could share, but don't we all have our memories from those early days on board the 'B'? I'm sure we all do! She was a part of our life, and has since become a part of our lasting memories! Thank you again for responding, and may God bless you and yours, always! 'Thanks for the memories, Barataria!' David

I was a seaman on the B from the spring of 1963 to august of 1966. I am the guy who designed the Barataria's Patch Emblem. I believe I won fifty bucks in the ships design contest for having my design picked. Did a lot of weather patrols, trips to Burmuda (Chased Giant frogs in the hills while under the influence of Rich Red Ruby Wine), once down to Gitmo (Much Wine and song, however, No women, got to ride in the cattle-car with SP escort back to the ship), Argentia (A very damp and cold place) and the yards in Curtis Bay MD. I was discharged before the ship went to Nam. My favorite haunts in Portland were the Capri lounge, Blue Moon Cafe, Joe and Ninos Circus room and Old Orchard Beach. Sure miss those dances at the YWCA with those Student Nurses and girls from the Golden School of Beauty. I was aboard the dirty 'B' in 60-61 as a 17 year old kid fresh out of boot camp. boy did those sailors have a lot of fun with me. we spent a lot of time at the blue moon and saw a lot of action in there. also on the 'B' there was a guy i won't mention his name the best i can remember he was from texas. he brought a bunch of fireworks back from leave,he took them into the DC shack and sawed them up and took the black powder and made this big old bomb out of a 2' cast iron elbow with a fuse then we all kidded him about blowing up the place. he got a little worried that he was going to get in trouble so he hid 'THE BOMB' for several weeks. then one morning right after the blue moon closed, this very loud explosion in the water next to the ship woke up everone. It was like a depth charge going off. it knocked the ship to shore power off for 15-20 minutes. no one knew what was going on. that is except for a few of us. boy was that guy scared when he sobered up and realized all the trouble he would be in if he got caught.we knicknamed him boom boom ________ if any one remembers that explosion or remembers me . e-mail me i would love to hear from you.

I took it to his house instead. He had to be in Boston Monday moring for a briefing about Barataria and 4 other WAVPs getting ready for a little trip across the Pacific. Nothing less than 20 foot seas for the whole month and 60 or 70 footers on Washington's birthday, 1968. I think the heavy weather billet was set heading out of Portland harbor and 90% of the crew got sick as the Skipper let the entire crew have liberty before the late afternoon sailing. 2/3 of the crew were hungover and the rest were still drunk. In the mid 60s I was the (young)ETC on the Barataria. The late Charlie Brown was the Warrant Radio Electrician at the time. Archie Pelley and Stan Frank were in the crew and I still see their names pop up from time to time. I remember many of the crewmembers. We had a very good ET shop and always got the job done. A lot happened during those two years. I left Bararatia (for RCA Institutes in NYC) just before the ship went to Viet Nam. It was during those two years that I learned the real power of a 1950/60s era Commanding Officer when we once sailed 700 miles out of our way while enroute Ocean Station Echo, so the Captain could set foot 10 minutes on Bermuda soil to buy a Wall Street Journal!! Now days, that would warrant a Court Martial I'm sure! The crew loved that Captain however, as he would slow the ship down coming back from Ocean Station so we could all get the extra $30 pay. That was a lot of money for a Seaman making $99 a month, and a young Chief less than $300! Anyway, those were very good and rewarding times for me. I learned a lot on that great ship that stayed with me during my 32 year career and beyond..

I served aboard the -Busy Bee- from Feb 1962 thru Oct 1963. Skipmander Vossler was the CO. We pulled GITMO during the Cuban blockade and it was hot, but Kingston and Red Stripe made up for it. Argentia was nice in January as was Bravo. Would like to hear from anyone who served on the Barataria at that time.

My dad DCC Carl W. Schmidt, Jr. was on the original commissioning crew in 1949 when the CG took over the Barataria from the USN. They all went by train to California (LA_San Fran?) and brought her back to Portland, Maine. I was 6 years old at the time so I don't remember the details. Dad pulled lots of ocean station patrols until he got off in 1953. He retired 12/1/57. Dad just passed away this past Nov ' 96. I followed his path into the CG and retired myself after 20 in 1982.

I was one of the Dexter crew transferred onto the Barataria after her deployment to Nam. Made the Alaska trip when we had the fire and explosion just outside of Unimak Pass...and from then on we called the ship the Burning B.
