My name is Rodney W. Hotz. I doubt you remember me, but I served on Lampedusa 1974 - 1975 as an ET2, along with Woody, Cates, Lawler, Wise, Santee, Buddy Gray, Lacy Webb, Foster and others whose names have now faded from my memory. My gosh, I haven't thought of those names in years. I read a posting that referred to living in the hootches, moving into the new buildings, diving on the reefs. I ran across your postings on Fred's Place and couldn't help responding. Believe me, those names and those postings bring back a lot of memories. In fact, they stopped me dead in my tracks for more than a moment. I hope you and all are doing well. You've brightened up my day today, and it was pretty bright to begin with. If any of you care to answer and let me know how you are, I would most sincerely enjoy hearing from you.

Hey gang ... I was the skipper at Lampedusa '88-89. If you liked me, great. If you didn't, blame London. These days I'm a humble preacher in Grants Pass, Oregon.

I was part of the commissioning crew. I arrived on Lampedusa as an ET2 June 1972 and left as an ET1 June 1973. There were some interesting times in between. There are a lot of shipmates that I’d like to say Hi to that are mentioned on this page: Robb Pierson, John Wright, Randy Griffing, Bob Wilson, Bob Brault, and Mr. Quinby. There are others not mentioned here from that first year that I wonder about and wish them well. After Lampedusa I spent some time at RADSTA Miami and at NAD Hawthorne Nevada to update the ATLSs that were stored there. I left the CG February 1974. After leaving the CG in 1974 I went back to school and to work. I worked in the machine tool business for 8-years with the highlight being involvement in the space shuttle project. Later I went on to be a software engineer at AT&T Bell Labs, which later became Lucent Technologies. I retired from Lucent in 2001 and have been teaching high school since then. Somewhere during that time I got married and had two children. To answer Robb Pierson’s reunion question I’d go for one. Lampedusa would be the best spot but it might not be a convenient location. Hawthorne Nevada might be a possibility for this. Hawthorne has historical linkage to Lampedusa, the ATLS project, and the terrain in some spots even looks a little like Lampedusa’s. Hawthorne even has a convention center (the El Capitan). Finally, I’d enjoy hearing from any Lampedusa shipmates. Just pop me an email.

I was on Lampedusa as an ET from 78-79. Don't really remember a lot details... Frank Klienberg's trips to Naples saw fit to that! The one thing I do remember were all the fights (I guess nothing else to do) and the stupid thing I did to the SK (Harry, do you recall what I wrote on the chalk board in the mess hall? I sincerely apologize). I'd love to hear from anyone there during that time. BTW, I also remember the live-in girl friends -- Boy those were so good nights!!!

Okay, guys, I wont bore you with comments about how easy you had it while guys like me served in tough spots -- Iwo Jima -- in the far east, but let me relate an experiece that happened to me last month in Spain. Very stupidly, I was on a walking trip through the Pyranees from the French Border to the sea at Santiago de Compostela. I got to the top of a mountain the first day wearing the only hat I had, a blue cap that said 'U.S.Coast Guard' on it. In deep woods, a tall dark wrinkled face guy with a Sicilian accent joined me and said, 'I have a hat like that'. I explained that it would be impossible because he was obviously Sicilian. He told me that he was Giuseppi, a doctor on the island of Lampedusa -- now living in Rome. Seemed like a great guy. He spoke highly of a chief on the island who gave him the hat. We shared some wine together and walked on. He kept going and I dropped out after 120 miles with a blown knee. As I did with many CG buddies, I got not address so I dont know how to contact him again. Too bad.

Served on Lampedusa 7/74 to 7/75. Sure I remember Bob LaVallee. And Lacy Webb, Moon Morrison, Charlie Cole, 'Bigfoot' Rogerson (for a short while), Chief Mac (Maguire?), Bobby the cook before Regan, CO Tony Mink before Matt Dillon, partying at Franco's summer home, swimming in the settling basin, living in the hootches, moving into the new buildings, planting grass around the new building (did it ever grow?). And I'll never forget the winter winds.

On 11/24/00 Bob LaVallee said:
My time on the island was 2/74-2/75 as a DC2. I remember the trailers and moving into the new buildings. I also remember knocking the station off the air when doing a generator switch. I am still in contact with Rick Foster(ET2). I wonder if Space(Walters) ever went back to Thiland to open that house of ill repute.

On 11/02/00 Harold L Forsythe said:
I was stationed there 78-79, 18 months of fun in the sun. The crew from SN to Skipper behaved as Americans with a mission, but not to much pushing around of each other or the locals. I remember 3 sets of Bose 901's in our corridor. Tim Easterday had the 1st one and two more sets were purchased. Sure kept the wind a bay. Take care guys.

On 06/24/00 John Wright said:
Helped put that place on the air and stayed for 14 months 72-73. Dust, heat, no showers, 12 hour work nights and trying to sleep during the days. Lots of beera Messina. It was a very rough year for me. I'd have to say most likely the roughest of my life. Yes, there were also some good times. The first CO climbed the tower just before we went on-air. He never did it again, and I don't think anyone ever told him who jumped up on the guy wire and got the whole thing shaking like crazy. I only weighed 200 lbs and didn't realize just how much it was going to shake LOL LOL LOL. Email me if you remember me.

Ex - Lampedusa Plank owner looking for station patch. I designed one while we were there, but it never got produced. Anyone have a spare they would like to part with?

On 02/05/00 Tim Easterday said:
Haven't seen anyone from Aug77 to Sep78. When I was there I heard enough stories about Dillan though. Anyone know Chief Charlie Rogerson. Worked with him in the Bahamas in the early 80's at the AUTEC project. He was shocked to find out how much I knew about him at the rock. Heard he kind of lost it down there. Our fearless leaders were Bobby, Billy, Blain and Bubbles. Old MK1 Trehan made CWO and retired back in Boston. Seen Buck once in Yorktown. Can't forget the CO letting us have live in girlfriends during the summer. DC2 got Cochetta, the mid-wife's daughter pregnant and was flown out immediately. CWO Knowles had a mutiny on his hands when he was acting. ET1 knocked out the skipper at quarters. CWO jumped Ripper the seaman and got his own butt kicked. Hope everyone has as good a memories as I have of the rock. One bad one was old Dawg was shot by a local for chasing his sheep off the cliffs.

To all who read this I bring you greetings from Franco. My wife and I I got to spend some time with him last month (Aug) when we went back to the Island for a 2 week visit. He and I walked around the old station sight (where the trailers used to be) . I told him about this web sight and about how many people have mentioned his name here. I also saw Enzo in Agrigento(thats were he works now). Both of them looked just the same as they did the last time you saw them. We looked for Giovanni but did not run into him but understand he is also doing well. I had forgotten how hot that island could get in August. The station is manned but is not transmitting as the tower in Turkey fell down and the Turk's dont plan to put it back, however ther is a chance that the Russians may put one up in that area, As a plank holder I never got to see the buildings completed, so Franco arranged for us to get a tour of everything. The only structure that I recognized was what we called the evaporator shed. It is still standing close to where the generators and the PINKYS used to stand. If any one wants a picture of Franco, let me know and I will attach one to an E-mail.
