DESTRUCTION OF THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U-853 OFF BLOCK
ISLAND, RHODE ISLAND
Saturday, 2 October, 2010 at 10:00am.
The compelling story of submarine warfare off the New England Coast will be held at the Braintree Historical Society. The Military Room at the Museum will host an exhibit of artifacts recovered many years ago from rthe U-853, with a special gallery openinjg as scheduled. The program will feauture guest speaker Paul M. Lawton, Attorney and Naval Historian followed by a 45-minute narrated video of the U-853 wreckage. In the Spring of 1945, the U-853 torpedoed the USS Eagle(PE46) off Portland, Maine, and the US Merchant Marine ship SS Black Point off Point Judth, RI. Mr. Lawton will explain the circumstances surrounding the true story of the USS Eagle's fate, and the change in casualty status of the 49 crew members originally reported by USN officials as 'killed by accident,' now declared 'killed in action.' Additionally, this military action includes the total destruction and sinking of the U-853 by USN and US Coast Guard vessels and aircraft off Block Island RI, with the loss of her crew of 55. The following special guests will also be available for interviews: Mr. John N. McDonald of Wareham, MA, former GM2/c WWII US Coast Guard veteran who served on the USCGC Moberly(PF45), involved in the attack and sinking of the U-853, and Mr. Gerhard 'Walter' Wengefeld, of Saybrook, CT, a former WWII German navy veteran who served on the German submarine U-444 that was sunk in the North Atlantic, Nov, 1943, by British and French naval forces. Mr. Wengefeld was 1 of 4 survivors of 44 crew members lost in her sinking, and when picked up out the N. Atlantic 3 survivors died of exposure, and Mr. Wendgfeld survived.
I can assure yout that this will be an interesting event, and I should add that the USCGC Moberly, and the USS Atherton, were credited by the USN in sinking the U-853.

I'm not after a reunion unless that's his desire, but I would like to learn his name, health history & see pictures. This is what I know about my bio-dad. Your birth father was five feet, ten inches tall and weighed 165 pounds. He had dark brown hair and gray eyes, with a fair complexion. Your birth mother stated that she thought he was a very handsome man.
Your birth mother reported that he had been born in the northeast, but that his family had moved to a mid Atlantic coast state where he had grown up. He was a high school graduate and your birth mother stated that he had a least one year of college. Your birth mother reported that he was 29 years old when you were born.
During World War II, your birth father had been a paratrooper in the United States Army. At the time of your birth, he was employed as a bookkeeper for one of the hotels on Miami Beach.

I was a USCGR Aviation Electronics Technician attached during active duty (after graduating from ATN School with the Navy) to CGAS New Orleans from October 1966 until I finished ACDUTRA in January 1967. I also spent 3 weeks at CGAS New Orleans in May 1967 and about three and one half months there from May 1968 through August 1968. I am looking for photos of the men, the aircraft and the station taken during or about those times. I remember being in a group photo taken of everyone stationed there that was taken in front of one of the Sikorsky H-52A helicopters

USCGR sent me to basic aviation school and Aviation Electronics Technician Navigation School from May 1966 to October 1966 at the Naval Air Technical Training Center at NAS Memphis (Millington, TN). Graduated from the program as an AT. I am looking for pictures that might show the base and the school at that time, as well as pictures of Coast Guardsmen that attended the school at the time. Unfortunately, the USCG guys were distributed through the Navy barracks and we mustered with the Navy; there was no separate company of Coast Guardsmen. I don't recall any USCG group photos being taken there, but if there was such a photo, I would like to get a copy.

GENTLEMEN, I am looking for good quality close up photos of any
of the SES vessels based at KEY WEST STATION from 1982 till 1994.
I need superstructure (all deck levels) photos of either WSES-2,-3,-4.
I am commissioned to build a WATERLINE model of the WSES-4
PETREL for a gentleman, who will donate the model to the USCG
ACADEMY. I will pay reasonable reproduction costs for good
