CAPT. (RET.) Roy Pearson Wood

CAPT. (RET.) ROY PEARSON WOOD, 93, of TINTON FALLS, passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born Feb. 6, 1914, in Staten Island, he resided in Randall Manor, Staten Island, before moving to Tinton Falls. He previously summered at the Cedar Grove Beach Club, Staten Island. He retired in December 1974 from the New York, New Jersey United Benevolent Sandy Hook Pilots Association. He entered the boats in December 1935. Roy was the son of Staten Island residents Capt. William King Wood, also a Sandy Hook pilot, and the former Clara Jane Pape. In 1940, he married another native Staten Islander, the former Frances Marie Bush, owner of Woodshed Antiques. Frances passed away in 1984. A native of Staten Island, Capt. Wood graduated from Port Richmond High School. At the time, he had the largest newspaper route for the Staten Island Advance. He attended Wagner College on Staten Island and was chosen 'walk on' for the varsity basketball and football teams. He played semi-pro football for the Ramblers and Stapes teams in Staten Island. During World War II, he was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Coast Guard. Capt. Wood enjoyed chess, woodworking, crossword puzzles, bridge, Scrabble, bowling, fishing, sailing and home gardening. While a resident and member of Cedar Grove Beach Club, Capt. Wood raced Interlake sailboats. He was a former member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Staten Island, Tompkins Lodge 471 F.&A.M., where he was a Master Mason for 55 years. He was also a member of the Richmond County Country Club, Great Kills Yacht Club and the American Contract Duplicate Bridge League. He is survived by his children, Gail Frances Wood Miller and her husband Peter of Manhattan and Cedar Grove Beach Club, Staten Island, William Wood and his wife Marli of Whiting, Manchester, Hope Wood Kostecki and her husband Anthony of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Capt. Roy Pearson Wood Jr. and his wife Maura of West Brighton and Cedar Grove Beach Club, Staten Island, and Capt. Quentin Wood and his wife Patricia of Little Silver; his grandchildren, Paul Winfield Greve, Wendy Elizabeth Greve, Mark Waldron Greve, M.D., Andrew Garret Greve, Renee Pamela Wood, Christine Alice Wood, Lt. Frederick Wood Willecke (U.S. Naval Reserve), Amy Frances Wood, and Alison Leigh Wood; and his great-grandchildren, Isabella Frances Romano, Sophia Rose Romano and Kyla Pearson Greve. A memorial service will be celebrated Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 216 Jewett Ave., Staten Island. Greeting will be at 10 a.m. in the church basement. The service will begin at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Dr. Richard G. Lohmeyer. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 216 Jewett Ave., Staten Island, NY 10314, or to St. John's Lutheran School, 663 Manor Road, Staten Island, NY 10314. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ely Funeral Home, Neptune.
