Matthew Garnett Wilbert
I would like to pass along my sincere thanks for all of the kind words, cards, letters and such that we have received from the Coast Guard Family following the passing of my son Matthew.
For those who were not aware, Matthew passed away on the 4th of April following a twenty month battle with a brain tumor. He passed just nine days after his tenth birthday.
In twenty plus years of service to my country, I have never seen a braver battle fought! Matthew will always be my true hero!
If you have the chance, please visit the web site we have put together to honor my son. It tells about his battle, has a few pictures, a guest book and some links to some other really touching sites. The site is at www.caringbridge.org/va/matthew
Thank you.
Respectfully,
Dan Wilbert, GMC, USCG

As some of you know, my son Matthew(10 years old) had been in a very brave battle with cancer. Matthew had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor back in August of 2001.
While Matthew fought a very hard fight, his illness took him home on 4 April at 5pm.
Matthew had been pinned an honorary fire fighter here in our town about a year and a half ago. Matthew was given full fire fighters honors at his service on the 10th. Matthew was as proud of all the Coasties as he was his dad.
I know my Young Guns will watch over me where ever I go.
