Paul M. Straube
I regret to inform our crewmates that BM3 Paul Straube
(coxswain) passed away on April 20, 2005. Paul was my first friend and roomie when we were based
in Boston back in 1979. Paul served aboard the Cutter Pendant based in Boston at the time. I was
transferred to SAR Station Gloucester, and remember Paul stopping into the comm. center to say
hello and taking a keen interest in the station when they were up breaking harbor ice. After his
service aboard Pendant, he too was transferred to Gloucester (1980) where he quickly adapted his
skills to small boat search and rescue. He worked diligently to qualify as a crewmman and then as
a SAR coxswain. This he achieved while still at the rank of Seaman, a great testimonial to a man
dedicated to his work and the Coast Guard. Paul became, through his dedication, an integral part
of the tight knit crew at one of the best SAR stations in the country. After his service, Paul
remained in Gloucester until he and his wife Pam moved north to Groveland, MA a short three weeks
ago. He is survived by his wife Pam and daughter Shannon Rose.As they say in Gloucester, he's
'finest kind', and we'll miss him like a brother. Fair winds and following seas Paul - we will
cherish those times, and honor your memory.
