Julian J. Shingler

ISLE OF PALMS - Retired Coast Guard Capt. Julian James Shingler, 80, a retired attorney, died Tuesday in a Charleston hospital. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today in Perry Funeral Chapel of Ashburn, Ga. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery of Ashburn. Mr. Shingler was born in Ashburn, a son of Clinton F. Shingler and Stella Julian Shingler. He was a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy and Washington University Law School. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He received the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Bronze Star. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Obie McKenzie Shingler; a daughter, Obie S. Santos of Isle of Palms; a sister, Betty S. Talmadge of Atlanta; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
