TCC Terry L. Shaw

Following quoted from Virginian Pilot 4/11/03: Terry L. Shaw ALACHUA, Fla. -- Terry L. Shaw's five-year heroic battle with cancer came to an end at home on April 8, 2003. Terry was steadfastly assisted at every step of his journey by his best friend and wife, Bettie Lee. Also there for Terry were his family (especially his sister, Sandy), friends and co-workers. Chief Shaw had a long, fulfilling career with the Coast Guard, with prior service in the Army. He received numerous awards and citations, but was most proud of his Meritorious Service Medal. His duty stations included: TRACEN Cape May, N.J. 6/81-7/81; TRACEN Petaluma, Calif. 7/81-12/81; CG CAMSLANT VA 1/82-9/82; GRU Miami Beach Fla. 9/82-9/85; USCGC Munro WHEC 724 10/85-12/86; COMSTA Honolulu, Hawaii 1/87-8/87; GRU Ft. Macon, N.C. 9/87-8/90; CG District Eight New Orleans, La. 9/90-6/94; COMSTA Kodiak, Ark. 7/94-9/96; and ESU Portsmouth, Va. 10/96-5/00. Terry was medically retired May 5, 2000. Terry and his wife enjoyed camping, NASCAR races (of which they went to numerous tracks), cruises, golf, their hot tub and basically just enjoying life to the fullest. Terry and Bettie Lee moved back to the Gainesville area so they could be close to their families. In addition to his wife, Terry is survived by his father, Robert Shaw of Gainesville, Fla.; mother, Jan Shaw of Newberry, Fla.; sisters, Sandy Shaw of Newberry and Jody Nava of Sarasota, Fla.; stepbrother, John Shaw of Edgewater, Fla.; and stepsons, Patrick Gurley and Brandon Gurley both from Gainesville. Terry's precious dogs, Ranger and Sierra, predeceased him. A celebration of Terry's life will be held at the home on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. Also, per his wishes, a private military burial at sea will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA or a favorite charity of your choice. TL, thank you for all the love, memories and laughter you brought into our lives.
