Capt. Kennard Palfrey
Captain Kennard Miller Palfrey Jr., U. S. Coast Guard (Retired), 66, of Seal Rock died Sept. 9, 2000 at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, N.H.
He was born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Sept. 11, 1933, son of Kennard M. Palfrey Sr. and the late Barbara (McNeil) Palfrey.
He graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1951 and went on to attend the Admiral Billard Academy. He received his bachelor's degree in science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at New London, Conn., and his master's degree in oceanography from the University of Washington, Seattle.
He married Jean (Burr) Palfrey on Nov. 22, 1958.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during Vietnam before retiring in 1981 as a captain and as director of the Oceanography Department in Washington, D.C. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, he worked for Oregon State University as the marine superintendent of the Ocean Research Vessel Wecoma, and retired from that position after 14 years in 1996.
He was a member of American Legion Post 116 in Newport; Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 411, in Newport; Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association; the Retired Officers Association; Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association; American Association of Retired Persons; Newport Loyalty Day Association; board member of the Seal Rock Rural Fire Protection District; member of the American Philatelic Society; American Topical Association; Lighthouse Stamp Society; and the Boy Scouts of America National Eagle Scout Association.
Captain Palfrey was responsible for starting the marine science postgraduate program at the training center, in conjunction with Long Island University, New York.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Palfrey of Seal Rock; his father, Kennard M. Palfrey Sr. of Rye, N.H.; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly P. and Richard M. Wood Jr. of Dumpfrey, Va., and Keryn P. and Phillip G. Newman of Sheppardstown, W.Va.; grandchildren Richard M. Wood III of Dumpfrey, Va.; and Tyler Newman, Melissa Newman and Jake Newman, all of Sheppardstown, W.Va.; brothers and sisters-in-law David J. and Judy Palfrey of Franklin, N.H., and Robert C. and Deborah Palfrey of Stratham, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at the North Church Chapel in Portsmouth, N.H., on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Shriners Hospital for Children - Portland, Oregon Unit, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland 97201, or to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass., 01701. Arrangements are by the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home in Portsmouth, N.H..
