Edward L. Murphy
Ed Murphy, my father, was very proud of his Coast Guard Service. He enlisted at 18 in 1938, to save lives, and ended up fighting to preserve the American way of life. His duty stations: CGC Pontchartrain (Iceberg Patrol), CGC Spencer (Bloody Winter of 42 and 43), CGC Wakefield, and LST-769. He received 11 battle stars for service, and a Presidential Unit Citation. He was aboard Spencer when she was photographed sinking U-175, and is pictured on the fantail. He was at Okinawa, and IeShima. He left in 1946 at a GMC with 1 stripe. He loved his service in the Coast Guard, and so did I. He passed away on Sept. 22, 2000. The Coast Guard Honor Guard participated at his funeral, and I was very proud of my father and his service, and it inspired me to enlist in 1970.
